i really liked the scene in USM after hes been grounded for being out late when he was fighting doc ock and kraven, MJ wanted to hang out with him, but he says he cant, and hes all pissed off as hes going home and hes saying all the things he hates and then he says this and i quote
" i just want to go to school and be spider-man when i want and go to a good college. and mary jane. God--i'm just so crazy about her. today-- i swear i could have married her today. should i tell her that? because i would-- i would marry her."
it really is one of my favorite peter/mj moments, and i totally connected because like iv been there, iv thought that, and wondered if i should tell the girl.

MJ sure wore an ugly sweater on that show lol, old yellow poofy thing, wouldnt suprise me if they pulled something out like that for the movies, in the first one she dressed like MJ should, but second one looks like she shops at value village, and same goes for the 3rd at this point
DACrowe
08-25-2006, 10:45 PM
I wouldn't say the third, but yeah in the second Dunst "dressed herself" and "did her hair" or rather her people did and they obviously had no idea how it would film. Looks like she put herself back in Sam's hands thankfully for the third.
And yes the show was quite good at giving great moments between Peter and MJ and Peter and Felicia who had a very fun relationship in the first season and then her becoming Black Cat was very well done in the fourth and fifth seasons (one of the ighlights of the disappointing fifth season was Black Cat continually popping up).
Which brings me to that lousy comic posted. No offense but I think it wrote BC totally wrong and MJ too for that matter. I think BC wasn't so insane nor MJ so weak. I thought their "budding" relationship over Peter was written much better by Mark Millar on his 12 issue run of Marvel Knights Spider-Man though.

Amazing Spider-Man #148, by Gerry Conway, which was part of the first clone saga that involved the first appearance of the Gwen Stacy clone. BTW, Peter, once he realized that he essentially slammed the door in MJ's face--being distracted by thoughts of Gwen--ended up feeling like a total dope.
EDIT: Of course, they..ahem..."reconciled" an issue later:

Yes, folks. This is when comics were a little more discreet about Peter getting some "Spidey action." :D

I own that series and have watched it several times. I know it's limited in characters (I mean, where is Aunt May?) but I still really loved it. The graphics are interesting and Spider-Man in action has never MOVED so well. LOVED that part. I also liked the way Peter was portrayed, although I was NOT as impressed with their take on MJ's look. Hated the hair-do.
I was ok with them introducing a new character - Indy - but I never got the sense that Peter liked her MORE than MJ. His dialog about it making more sense to connect with someone thru common interests (Indy), than just pure chemistry (Mary Jane), made me think he liked Indy, but he was still crazy about MJ. That, and the fact that he kept saying to Indy "this is all just casual between us, right?"
The scene where MJ came over (the morning after they had been kidnapped) and found Indy there in Peter's apt... I know that some would jump to a circumstantial conclusion... But I don't, for several reasons.
Peter had no trouble keeping a girl he admitted he was hot for at arms length, so why would he sleep with one he wanted to stay "casual" with? He wouldn't!! So I don't assume he did, just because we saw her walking down his stairs.
MJ called him naive, innocent... he blushed when she flirted with him... he was in love with MJ... and almost as if to insolate himself from the relationship he thought he shouldn't indulge in, he developed one with a girl he was NOT as interested in, who he could safely flirt and work with. She also furthered his career.
I was annoyed that the show IMPLIED something happened between them (trying to pander to a raunchy MTV audience?) but I assumed that they must have been hashing out details of the evenings events - because they did like sleuthing together - and it got late. So, instead of going home, the brazen hussy managed to stay there... but that doesn't mean - and I don't believe - anything "happened" between them.

MJ's hair was designed as such for technical reasons. It's too time consuming and difficult to animate long hair. You should hear how freaked out the entire team of "The Incredibles" was just because of the scene where Elasti-girl brushes Violet's hair behind her ear.

I really disliked that show. Little to no use of classic Spidey villains, and the ones they designed sucked. I mean i understand the movies have to have their pick- but there are tons of classic Spidey villains that will never hit the big screen.
But worse- the storylines. In the lady ninja story, MJ walks in on two decapitated bodies, nearly gets killed herself (Yeah right, she could outrun the Ninja chick )and within a few minutes she's laughing and joking with Spidey like nothing happened.
The Talon episode was the worst. Peter is afraid to go to Harry and tell him about (whatever her name was) because Harry might be "hurt". How much REAL hurt could that psycho cause Harry due to her high-risk lifestyle? She already had people after her. Harry could've been killed in the crossfire. And why as Spidey was he trying to reform her? She was doing things every bit as dangerous to the public (like dropping the steel tube) as any other criminal- but she deserved special treatment because she was bedding Harry?
For that matter (And this is because I don't remember) why was Peter avoiding a relationship MJ? To keep her out of danger? But it was okay to put Indy in danger because he didn't love her?

You have some points there, but I didn't expect it to be full of comic book continuity, and just took it for what it was... a different spin, loosely taking off from the first SM movie.
I liked WATCHING it. The high contrast art, the way Spidey moved...
I think they may have known their audience too. I have the box set of the original cartoon, ALL of the Animated series from the 90s (at last!) and MTV's New Animated series. The latter is the only one the kids in my life really got into. I'm not agreeing, just saying...

man even going back to the beginning they really did make it seem like MJ is the one for Pete. i mean right from the start aunt may and aunt anna are trying to set them up, pete assumes she ugly and boring or w/e, they hide her face and betty and liz see how hot she really is, but we dont see her face, and then the moment we and pete see her "u just hit the jackpot" part, like i cant believe stan even bothered making gwen, like it seems like MJ was the one for him from the start

I agree with both of you. Don't get me wrong, I love "SM loves MJ", but she's really nice and girl-next-door like Gwen, and not really the hard to get party-girl MJ. That's why I like MJ so much. There's more to her then the nice girl-next-door. She hides a lot of that by putting on the party-girl act when really there is more to her. I wish they would explore that and her troubled childhood. It would make her more interesting and more human.

like they did with Ultimate MJ..they showed how bad things were with her dad, and at home, and how it affected her. I thought it showed what a strong person she is, and gave her depth. That's one my favorite things about 616 MJ too, is she came from a bad homelife and managed to get her life together. Some fans ( and editors )completly miss how important it is for Peter to have that strong backing.

Yeah, the way Pete has been written does make him seem like that kind of guy. The way I like to look at it, though, is this: he planned to wait until marriage with Gwen. But when Gwen died, it shook Peter to the core and made him decide not to wait anymore. His outlook wasn't quite as innocent and rosy anymore, and he probably started thinking that he could die any moment, so he might as well enjoy himself.

Oh come now. that's just wishful thinking to keep Peter "true" to MJ. I'll bet if there wasn't conclusive proof of the Black Cat affair, you guys would be denying that too. As always with this debate, I challenge any of you hardcore MJ fans to show where either Peter or Gwen were timid sexually. If anything, they were FAR more passionate than Peter and MJ after their first coupling. If you look at the issues prior to Peter's first proposal, he and MJ only acted as friends, not lovers. Peter's proposal seems totally out of left field. The second proposal as well, but that's another story.

Good God, Dragon, what part of "the way I like to look at it" do you not understand? I never said this was the definitive story, did I? It's merely my own personal interpretation. Sheesh, you are so blinded by your own defense of Saint Gwen that there just isn't room for other peoples' points of view is there?
If I want to look at the world with rosy-colored glasses I am entitled to that. :p

It's a point of looking at the characterization realistically. And it isn't about defending "Saint Gwen". I don't even like Black Cat but there's no denying that the relationship existed. In fact if you were looking at the characters realistically, there'd be no concept of Gwen being a Saint in the first place, which is my point. The only reason these debates ever arise is because some of you have made MJ a deity. It's not that Peter has loved both MJ & Gwen equally. HE HAS TO LOVE MJ MORE. She has to be the ONLY WOMAN he has been or could ever be with. Even though I dig Gwen more, I certainly never try and make it that Peter loved her more.
Yeah. You're certainly entitled to look through rose-colored or any other type of glasses. But is the reality of the characters that horrible?

Yeah, the target audience may have been young girls, but the books also have that special something (like the early comics) that appeals to a wider audience. If you like MJ and Peter, I think it's a safe bet.

I don't think MJ fans are (well not me and most anyway) trying to force her "to be the only one."
I just find (as do many) Gwen a boring character; while her affect on the Spidey world cannot be denied and how it shook Peter up so much. Nor the fact that she was part of the golden age (albeit so was MJ) of Spidey. She just was a boring character and some of the revisionist reworkings of her being his true love can be as annoying as that of JMS turning her into a stuipid tramp, which she most obviously was not.
Oh well.

Well, in this thread alone we have at least 2, and I've debated with others over this subject as well. And for that matter we have the very elaborate essay by MadGoblin.
I just find (as do many) Gwen a boring character; while her affect on the Spidey world cannot be denied and how it shook Peter up so much. Nor the fact that she was part of the golden age (albeit so was MJ) of Spidey. Oh well.
Writing Gwen as Peter's true love isn't revisionist. It's on the comic page, displayed as plain as day. Were she not killed off, they'd have ended up together. Peter was completely happy with her. And YOU believing she was boring doesn't alter the likelihood of the characters having been sexually active in their relationship. The suggesting that they "were waiting for marriage" is revisionist as there's nothing to suggest that on the comic page. People have in hindsight rendered Gwen an innocent virginal character which isn't anymore true to the character than her ****ting with Osborn. The more reasonable idea is that Peter and Gwen did wait for a period as both were virgins when they got together. And it's only because of his sexual experience with Gwen that he was prepared to engage more quickly with MJ and to have the very awkward and freaky relationship he had with Black Cat, and for that matter the suggested fling with Betty.
And speaking of boring, MJ has been a snoozer for 20 YEARS. There is almost no storyline wherein she's been pivotal. Her emotional issues that some harp on as making her interesting was for ONE ISSUE and has never been dealt with since. For that matter it wasn't anything special even when it did happen. In Gwen's case, she was never explored as anything other than the girl who loved Peter. But she had tons more potential. The missed opportunities are likely why Gwen is brought back repeatedly. If MJ were such a strong character, there'd be no need to ever mention Gwen again. They certainly didn't bring Betty up when Gwen was around.
MJ has had the benefit of focus that Gwen never had, and yet writers still can't find anything interesting to do with her except backtrack as in SSM #32. If that isn't the measure of a character being dry, I don't know what is.

I think it is safe to say that MJ has had some good stories in the last 20 years and we're being overly elaborative.
While I disagreed with some of what I read in MadGoblin' way-too-long-for-its-own-good essay, he did make a point I did like. After Pete and Gwen got together she did become a daddy's girl who literally cried in 2/3 of the issues she appeared in after that. Very boring.
And I was calling it revisionist when Loeb wrote the very good Spider-Man: Blue that made the case that Peter loved Gwen more and that Gwen was "MJ's wake-up call" and he preferred being with her pictures on Valentine's Day, blahbblah. When Ever since ASM #150 the case was made that he would not look in the past 'cause he loved MJ. Sure they were on/off again, but in the end they married and I think the DeMathis "The Kiss," did a much better job describing his relationship with Gwen and how it was reflected later with MJ over the course of one issue.
Just my opinion though.

They had an ongoing relationship in the mid 80's. The first issue that suggested them having sex was Spectacular Spider-Man #88. I say suggested, because even though comics were more explicit in the 80's they still didn't show that much. What you see is Peter walking out of Cat's bedroom after seeing her lying in bed, obviously nude.

I think it is safe to say that MJ has had some good stories in the last 20 years and we're being overly elaborative.{quote]
MJ has been part of some god stories. The stories would have have been just as good if she wasn't there. She hasn't generated very many.
[quote]While I disagreed with some of what I read in MadGoblin' way-too-long-for-its-own-good essay, he did make a point I did like. After Pete and Gwen got together she did become a daddy's girl who literally cried in 2/3 of the issues she appeared in after that. Very boring.
But since that isn't true, the boredom issue is a moot point. to be a "daddy's girl" she'd have to make her decision-making subject to the will of her father, which she never did. As for the crying, that's just an exaggeration. Gwen was upset for a very good reason- she was mourning her father's death. She eventually came out of that and didn't contiune with it. And it's extremely ironic that you'd bring this up considering that MJ has had her share of crying spellls as well- AND- at least Gwen cried for a reason. Compare this to Mj becoming a basketcase when SHE- Not Peter admitted knowing his identity. What the HELL was MJ crying for?
And I was calling it revisionist when Loeb wrote the very good Spider-Man: Blue that made the case that Peter loved Gwen more and that Gwen was "MJ's wake-up call" and he preferred being with her pictures on Valentine's Day, blahbblah.
Loeb never once said in that story that Peter loved Gwen more. But like a true MJ fan, Peter loving Gwen at all is enough to make you take it to that level. And considering that Conway DID say Peter loved MJ more, what's the difference? Just like fans, writers have their favorites as well.
Not in the least. It's comical that immediately after ASM #150, Peter and MJ's relationship denegerated in pettiness, with MJ acting like a total ***** much of the time (Her actions completely betray the retcon of her knowing Peter's secret), and then to near indifference, before they finally broke up.
And while "The Kiss" was sweet, it did nothing to sum up Peter's relationship with Gwen. If anything, it served to remove any meaning from it, the DeMatteis repeatedly and REPEATEDLY has Peter say that things probably weren't as romantic as he remembered; And moreover, like others making Gwen a mere stop-gap on Peter's way to MJ, rather than making their relationship a special thing with a life of its own.

One of my favorite Pete/MJ moments in the recent SSM annual, was when MJ and Pete are talking about mix tapes, and when MJ pulls a hat with a mistletoe out and Pete is too scared to kiss her.

I don't know if this was mentioned in this thread yet, but there was an issue not long after they were married where MJ wanted to do something naughty for Pete by taking pictures of herself with his camera without him knowing (till he developed the film). It was cute because she didn't see Pete behind her on the wall while she was posing seductively for the camera in her teeny bikini. After a few shots, you see his arms reach down over her head and then you just see her legs hanging down from the ceiling. At first you hear, "Aiiiieeee!!" and then you hear, "mmmmm." :)

Definitely the Sensational Spider-Man Annual. Thats the most interesting that I've seen the marriage written. Now, I'm all for Pete and MJ being married, but this is the first time that they actually seemed like a couple in a deeply commited relationship, imo.

Great moment, but I must admit I liked how they redid it in Sensational Annual #1 recently with her saying to egg him on and he doesn't need her to ask it's more of a "Well, I'll show you" kind of Dustin Hoffman-Graduate moment.

Well I think this image in the trailer got a lot of people to go see it. And it still remains probably the hallmark moment of the series as it is on the back of the DVD sleeve of the first one and what most people reference in spoof or homage to the Spidey movies. That and the line "Go get 'em, Tiger."
You know for a movie where the fans just absolutely hate Dunst (I'm impartial as I prefer comics MJ much moreso but she serves Raimi's vision fine) it is ironic that the two most popular points of reference to non-fans are intimate moments in the first two between Pete and MJ.
Yet we get stupid threads about writing her out or "It's not Mary Jane 3" or my favorite "Send the Red Head to Heaven in 2007."
Funny. Not really.

You know I thought she played the role perfectly in the first movie. She isn't the typical "comic" book version of MJ, but like you said..she plays the version that Raimi has on screen pretty good. That's pretty much all I can ask for.
I never had a problem with her being MJ though. For the most part I thought the casting for the Spider-man trilogy was spot on

I finally got around to buying the famous wedding issue in ASM annual 21. I've heard good things about this issue, so I think it might be a great Peter/MJ moment. As for my personal favorite, I am still undecided. However, I do love the cover to ASM 515, although it never actually happened in that issue where MJ hands Peter a hot can of soup on his way out to websling. It really makes you think he is a lucky guy with a caring and loving wife.

The MJ/Peter moments like the above are the only things I really liked about Stracynski's Spider-man run.
I can't believe he could do stuff that good, and then on the other hand write absolute trash like Sins Past, which still does this bull**** of Peter still loving Gwen and Mary Jane still believing Peter loves Gwen more than her. I ****ing hate that ****. How many more writers need to pull that crap?
I thought Spider-man: Blue by Loeb and Sale was ok with respects to the idea that it would be Peter's final goodbye to Gwen. It just keeps happening and keeps getting brought up. I'm sick of it and I'm sick of the bridge.
Thing is when I read comics I like it more often when characters are together when they are apart. The romantic tension and the years spent apart where they can't get together just bores me.
Why are writers so intimidated by having a super hero or heroine have a steady relationship or even marriage? I think this thread has proven that MJ and Peter are so much more interesting and attractive together than they are apart.

Now I'll be the first to tell you I hate the whole Mega Clone Saga storyarc (Minus Ben Reilly / The Scarlet Spider , Who was a great addtion to the cast of Spider-man .) Still they were some great Peter & Mj moments .
This one of those great moments .
Mary Jane Watson-Parker, a pregnant woman with no superpowers, has to defend herself from her beloved husband Peter Parker /Spider-Man who's on a homocidal rampage created by the Jackal in one final attempt to drive Peter Parker totally insane.
For me these two issue's show just how strong a character MJ is. (Peter is really is the luckest Man alive to have such a woman in his life as his wife .)

Uhhh hey, that reminds me...
If Peter's not the clone, how do they explain away the implanted trigger in his mind for him to go nuts once Jackal died? I guess some stories are just best left forgotten. :yay:

I remember the whole "Time Bomb" story where Peter hit MJ. Still makes me glad to see how forgiving she is a character at the conclusion of that story.

To date, that is still one of the worst moments I've ever read in a Spider-man comic. That's right up there with "The Other" and "Sins Past" as far as I'm concerned.

Anybody remember how in Spider-man Unlimited Issue#1 how Peter was going to pick up the pizzas but then had to go stop Carnage and Shreik and then MJ got real worried? Mj also got really worried alot of the times Peter fought Venom as well so those were great MJ moments to:up:.

If someone can tell me the issue that happen in then I could probably upload it. Right now, I'm searching and can't exactly pinpoint the event.

While I don't think it belongs in a "favorite Pete/MJ moments" thread, the offending issue is SSM 226. It was not called "Time Bomb" (TB was the issue posted above where Pete has to kill her), it was the ish where Pete discovers he's a clone.
And yes, this thread needs more scans. How about the Honeymoon issue, since it's now celebrating it's 20th anniversary along with the wedding ish?

I think the MJ in "Kraven's Last Hunt" is also a classic. The six-part story shows MJ worrying about Peter, which makes the reader understand just how much she cares and loves her husband. It is also cool how she could tell that Peter was not the Spider-Man in costume during her confrontation with the two thugs while walking home.

Another great MJ moment is in the Symbiote Storyline (if I remember correctly). MJ is telling Peter about her past and about Her parents and Her Sister. truly a great Issue and a great moment!.
