View Full Version : Favorite Peter/MJ moment?

I just thought of another really great moment, but MJ and Pete aren't on panel together. It's the scene where MJ convinces Harry to save Peter, reminding him that they're friends and that Harry isn't evil like his father. So Harry goes to save Peter from the trap he set and tragically dies right after from the serum that was poisoning him into madness. That was a great MJ moment, if not her best, but it's also romantic because she saves Pete's life. *sniffles*
Oh yea, thats from Spectacular Spider-man #200.

God I love Spec 200. Lately it's gotten me thinking though after watching the Spider-Man movies, is it really necessary to kill off characters like Harry Osborn?

Wow... I think I've posted a few panels of that, but it's good to have the whole thing here to remind folks...
Peter has been married for several years, to a woman with whom he shares more than several years of history... a woman who KNOWS him and loves him and who he totally LOVES. And he is about to loose ALL that... All the love, companionship, memories... Like it never happened.
How can you NOT look at that as totally tragic?! This could be the worst thing that has ever happened to Peter... :(
And WE have 20 years of stories... that don't count... like THEY never happened... EXCEPT that they DID! Making the characters forget doesn't change that. And they can't "mindwipe" the fans.
I know I won't be able to get past the fact that a terrible thing has been done to Peter and MJ... Which is why I can't even read OMD. To me THIS story doesn't exsist.

Totally agree with you. Just a few months ago I read Spider-Man when MJ and Peter were separated after the plane explosion incident and it sux alot. The story just doesn't feel right without them together. I'm not sure how this is going to work out since MJ is being turn into Jackpot.
Btw Peter is way over Gwen Stacy so don't you dare bring her back. Leave the woman dead.

Btw I'm going to post "The Parallel Lives Issue" where MJ discovers Pete's true identity on the day his Uncle died probably tomorrow so look out for it.
Also if anybody wants to see a particular scene or an entire issue involving our favorite couple just let me know the title and issue and I'll check to see if I have it.

That parallel lives thing is freaking cool. I've read the one where MJ comes into his apartment crying after he fought Puma (?) and telling him she knows, but they never really did specify when I guess.
I like JMS' MJ best because JMS is so awesome. He wrote Babylon 5 and some other TV show, so he is way more talented than the past writers. I like what he did with MJ in Sins Past. He gave her so much character and made her so much more human and real.
I like what he did with MJ during the whole Avengers mansion thing.
Most of all I can't wait for MJ to become Jackpot. I am so psyched that MJ will be a superhero and she will keep her knowledge of Peters' secret....a secret. So Peter can hook up with other women in front of MJ and she can't say s**t. Thank you JQ, this is freaking awesome.
I'm so psyched for this new chapter, my only regret is that JMS can't be the one bringing us this magic.

I didn't really want to dress up for halloween, but my boyfriend (who did) convinced me to wear a Spidey shirt I had embroidered for the movie premiere. I took one of my Spidey figures (64 pts. of articulation) and went as a Spider-man fan... heh. :)
But as you can see by the change in Avi, I'm getting my fantasy fix elsewhere... Thank goodness for Smallville.
When BND crashes and burns, and they but Peter and MJ back together... I'll THINK about picking things up again.

Well I haven't dropped the 616 Spidey.
Marvel just doesn't release issues anymore, lol. It actually feels like Marvel isn't publishing Spider-man comics anymore cause of these delays.
I'm hating the 616 Spidey universe at the moment for a number of reasons.
1) The delays.
2) "One More Day" sucks. First issue was boring and the second issue made absolutely no sense.
3) Chances are that at the end of OMD Peter and MJ will divorce. All signs are pointing towards it and seriously at this point...I could really care less. I'm tired of Joey Q teasing the fans with that crap. If your going to do it, just do it. The fans deserve better then to be strung along like this.
4) Delays again. It sucks having to wait for "OMD" because the story has been so damn boring and doesn't interest me at all. Until this story is over there are going to be no 616 Spidey titles to collect. It's one thing to wait for a story if its good. But damn, the feeling of waiting for this story to get my Spider-man fix is so damn depressing.
Whatever....
USM is really good right now.
So I'm happy with that.

"Will you marry me?"
"Yes."
"Really?"
"Face it Tiger, you've just hit the jackpot."
Long live the marriage and down with JOEY Q (aka: Biggest Tool)

Any fan of the marriage is in for a rude awakening if they read the last issue of OMD. Looks like us fans only have one more issue left to enjoy the marriage. At the end of the day, Joey Q finally gets what he's always wanted.
Wow, I knew it was coming. I think everyone did. Now that the moment is actually here and the marriage is practically over, I didn't think I would be this depressed about it. Of coarse I would be pissed off cause well I'm a huge fan of the marriage and feel Peter/MJ are "the" couple in all of comics but, I'm seriously contemplating giving up on 616 Spider-man all together. Losing MJ is losing a part of what makes Spider-man...well...Spider-man.
The "essence" of Spider-man hasn't been around for some time now. Unmasking, magic, totems, stingers, The "Other", countless out of character moments and so on...but losing MJ is pretty much the icing on the cake. A cake that taste pretty F***ing awful right now.

Looking through this thread, this was one of my all time favorites. As a kid reading the comic in the 70's, I was always pulling for Pete and MJ to finally get together. This was pretty much the beginning, the first real kiss. I also love the little reaction Robbie gives here. Ross Andru really doesn't get the credit he should for his years on Spidey!
One nice thing is Joe Q did put this into the little montage for OMD.
How can Joe Q both get it and then just not get it at the same time?

Actually one of the original endings to the clone saga was that MJ was supposed to be a clone, which is why it carried over as such in the cartoon. Joey Q was FArrrrr from the first guy to try and get rid of the marriage.

He's only the most vocal because the fan base shrunk and the internet blew doors open.
I'm not defending the guy by any means, I think Brand New Day is the ONE smart thing this idiot ever did.
Quesada is like the George W Bush of comic books, every time he opens his mouth you just die a little inside and go "When the hell is he out of office again?"
(-and by all means continue the thread. Just cuz I think a single Spidey is in the long-term the way to go doesn't mean I didn't grow up in the MJ era.)

I agree.
That's pretty much how I feel about Quesada. Every single time he opens his mouth I'm stuck wondering if he actually knows what the hell he's saying. I think the concept of BND is good. Spidey did have some baggage on him in recent years. The Unmasking being the main thing. The marriage was not the problem in my eyes. It was actually one of the few reason I continued to read the Spider-man comics even when they were bad.
But meh whatever....

Haha, OMD sucks I'm sure, but I don't have the stink of it all over me cuz, once again, I didn't read it. I'm jumping into BND with wide eyes.
The most annoying thing is that everything that needed fixing in Spidey's world, aside from the marriage, happened because of Quesada. He gets no gold star from me for un-f****** up everything he himself, and that snivelling Babylon 5 nerd f***** up. I just plain like the real Spider-Man.
ragingdemon155
01-16-2008, 08:20 PM
EXACTLY!
That's one of the problems I have with this era. The fact that most of this stuff was due to Quesada. This man praised all these freaking stupid ideas in interviews. The unmasking, the other, sins past and blah blah blah. He fixed all that crap up with this BND but, he threw away one of the big time reasons why I read Spider-man comics...Peter and MJ together. The funny thing was that the marriage was the one thing that fans weren't complaining about.
But meh whatever.
My thread will live on!
Maybe the reason why I'm starting to settle down just a bit (I'm still pissed off beyond belief with OMD but, not foaming at the mouth anymore lol) is cause I know that Peter and MJ will be back together again.

I really hate to burst your bubble, but I know you're one of those who is buying BND. I'll try to explain it in simple enough terms.
In the old format, ASM would average at least 100k issues (usually a bit more depending on the gimmick occurring) and between them SSM and FNSM would add another 100k or so (averaging about 55k for SSM and 45k for FNSM). In total, there might be about 210k issues of Spider-Man sold.
Now, JQ gives us this horrible storyline (OMD) and a new status quo that, to be honest, makes absolutely no sense. A number of people drop the book, but a lot of people keep reading because they expect it won't last. Some actually like it. Let's say, worst case scenario for Marvel, that about 20% of ASM's readership drops the book. To be honest, I really doubt that many people will stop reading, but we'll go with that number for now.
Now, if ASM's sales numbers drop by 20% then each issue will only sell about 80k copies. However, ASM is coming out three times a month. That means that roughly 240k issues of 616 Spider-Man comics will sell each month rather than just 210k. Despite the fact that fewer people will be buying ASM than before, Marvel will be able to call BND a success.
I hate to say it, but it's pretty obvious. Peter and MJ are finished until JQ is gone. It'll take a drop in readership of about 40% for Marvel to see a loss on this endeavour, and that simply isn't going to happen. Either drop the books (like many others and myself) or get used to the new status quo.

I wouldn't get Spider-Man Blue if you want a good Peter/MJ issue. It was good, but it was mostly about Peter getting maudlin over Gwen.
I would go with Parallel Lives
http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Spider-Man-Parallel-Lives/dp/0871355736
Or you might try the "Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane" title. It is very well written and my niece, who is a real girly-girl, loves them. So do I.

And in June the next hardcover will come out that will bring her up-to-date:

If you can't wait till June, there are paperbacks... but they are small and not nearly as nice as the HCs:

I much have read the issue 5 times already. It's an amazing and heart warming read.
Marvel kind of destroyed it with the OMD day story by erasing everything that's happened but, if you can find a way to ignore all that like most do....the issue is a classic.

Heck... I've dumped ALL things MARVEL.
I realize now that seeing the Spider-Man movies in the theatres multiple (10+) times just ENABLED this idiot company to give Quesada room to run the character into the ground.
Distance and time have not faded the anger and disgust... it's just made the scope of the violation and the MASSIVE "SCREW YOU" he gave to fans all the more CLEAR.
The more I thought about it the more it became set in stone.... Marvel won't see another penny from me till Quesada is GONE.

Hmmm.... I didn't really care for Blue, it struck me as too long and whiney. If you want two great issues that are short and fairly self contained without needing back stories or explinations try either:
1. Sensational Annual #1 - great story, little action (or pete for that matter), all the backstory you need is right there in the issue and has some really touching moments.
2. Silver Surfer Requiem #2 - sounds odd I know, but this is actually probably one of my favorite Pete/MJ moments. You don't need history, and the dynamic is rather brilliant, plus it touches on some real life issues and doesn't talk down to you over them. as a bonus, it's really pretty art.

Jeph Loeb's story telling and Tim Sale's art really combined togeather to make a very emotional, cool and gripping story.
As for Sensation Annual #1, I do agree that is a great story. It defenitley was one of the better Issues of 2007. One of the things I liked about it was the flash backs of Peter and MJ kissing at the airport. The flashback was from ASM Issue #143 to be specific.

I have many favorite moments, but here's one favorite of mine. I forgot which comics they were, but it actually was from the "Clone Saga" period. In that "Time Bomb" two-parter, if I recall correctly, the Jackal puts a post-hypnotic suggestion that forces Peter to hunt his own wife down and he tries to kill her. She runs while he battles his way through the New Warriors and his own clone, but in the end, Mary Jane made her stand at Aunt May's old house in Forest Hills, ready to die by Pete's hands. She didn't even beg for her life. Instead, Mary Jane just urged Peter to believe in himself and in their love. And it worked! That, to me, is one of my favorite examples of just how strong Peter and Mary Jane's love was for one another.
I also love "The Amazing Spider-Man", vol. 2, #50. Sure, not every one is a fan of JMS's work, but I loved how he brought the pair back together. And if nothing else, we get a hilarious moment with Doctor Doom at the airport's metal detector.

I'm plan to keep checking this thread now and then, cause it makes me smile... :)
But I really have very little to say anymore... I've dumped ALL the comics. :(
When that happens... one of you Hypsters, (I've had fun chatting with many of you all over the years) PM me and let me know...
Bye.
Yup. That sums it up for me, too, Cap. I've dropped all my books, although I do read the occasional Flash or Daredevil (ironically - or not? - both are superheroes married to normal women) that my husband brings home. Unfortunately I can't stop him from collecting, but at least he pretty much sticks to DC comics except for DD.

MJ was all about a good time back then, she wasn't really willing to take on anyone else's gloom, ..guess it's 'cause she was suppressing enough of her own. MJ the party girl, she was also a ****, but that's cool.

I have always loved the MJ/Peter relationship (reader since the sixties), and I've been quite upset, as a long time fan, with the direction Marvel has taken with MJ and Peter...the MAIN draw for me for the books since way back when. I believe there were two of them. I don't know much about the second (or if there are more than two), but the first focused on Peter and MJ (mostly MJ) when they were kids and teenagers. They aren't in-continuity, and they were geared more towards teenage girls. If you're interested in checking them out, you should be able to find them on Amazon by searching for "Mary Jane" or "Mary Jane 2."

I can tell you why I have always loved MJ, and, therefore, MJ and Peter together.
MJ is a very well-rounded and realistic character. She's very pretty, yet not egotistical about it...she is, in fact, perhaps, even a bit insecure. She knows she's pretty, but her beauty is not her reason for being. Perhaps she's wise enough to know that outside beauty fades with time, but inside beauty remains. MJ is ambitious, and brave (how many times has she come to Pete's rescue?). As brave and independent as she is, however, she doesn't mind "her man" rescuing her from time to time! Her ego doesn't get in the way there, either. And she doesn't mind showing her own vulnerabilities (i.e., her tendency to run from a problem instead of staying to confront it). As a single woman, she hid pain behind an exhuberant personality, which was really just a facade for someone who needed someone to love, and who needed someone to love her in return. This makes her endearing. As a married woman, she was a devoted friend, partner, and companion. Most importantly, she loved Peter the science nerd more than Peter the Spider-man. One gets the impression that she couldn't care less that Peter is Spider-man, and that if he lost his powers tomorrow, she'd love him no less.
A well-rounded, well-thought out character. That she appeared as a constant in a comic book and still came across so real is amazing.
I'm not really the biggest comics fan (though I will admit to a sneaky love of the FF, from all the way back at the dawn of time, and I love Spidey and Torch together!)...but the draw for me in the Spider-Man comics through the years has been MJ first...and then MJ and Spidey together. A class act.
She's a great character...a rare character, and they are wonderful together. And doing what they have done is a very big and sad mistake.
Until she's back as his wife...I'm finished with the books and with Marvel.
Just a little P.S.: I love her friendship with Aunt May, too. How many mothers and daughters in law can communicate like these two do?

I agree.
Maximum Carnage had some really good MJ/Peter moments especially near the end. I know some people will say that MJ was continuously nagging and so on through out, but I thought that was a realistic response to all the horror that was taken place around her.
Love the conversation that her and Peter have after he gets out of the hospital in the last issue.

She really never wanted him to get hurt and that's one of the reasons I thought it was great with her responses to all the horror that was happening.

Also damn...on a depressing note.
Just finished reading a panel for Spider-man BND from the WWLA. It's almost impossible thinking about a possible scenario where Marvel actually gets Peter and MJ married once again. Hearing these creators talk about "Peter working better single" just urks the hell out of me. If Marvel did decide to go back on this whole thing, they would lose a ton of credibility simply cause they back this up so much. Then again, I know Marvel is famous for standing behind an idea and once things go south (fan opinion, sales) they quickly back off of it.
The only probable way this will change is if sales drop for the title. I have no clue how well BND is doing though.

Mary Jane: "Aww honey, not more Spidey action again."
Peter: "Hey, you weren't complaining about the Spidey action you just...."
Mary Jane: "Finish that sentence and you'll be sleeping on the couch for a month."

I do really like the writing in the Civil War and "The Other" storylines... MJ is hilarious inside Stark Tower, interacting w/ the Avengers and the like.
I still can't believe Peter threw Wolverine out the window. How they showed it, man. What a moment. Not much to do w/ MJ, outside of Logan taking a jab at her intelligence for getting into the taboids.
I hope they keep her involved like that in the future.

BND is doing well for now.
If you look at the sales, they have dropped issue after issue. I personally feel that the sales next month will also drop a bit. There will be a sales bump when MJ appears (You would think that Marvel would get the hint when that happens).
Anyway, I don't expect sales for this title to remain strong. People are hanging around waiting for a reason to justify all that took place in OMD. That moment still hasn't happened and we're 9 issues in already.

You call it cheesecake... I call it romance... but it WORKED because a.) they were MARRIED (face it, married sex doesn't offend anybody) and b.) there were tasteful limits. :cwink:
One of the most ABSURD and OFFENSIVE comments to race out of the evil ones mouth, was that all the intimacy that Peter and MJ shared still happened... just without the benefit of that annoying, character aging, story killing, albatross of a commitment called MARRIAGE. :whatever:
But the IGNORANCE and STUPIDITY of JQ when it comes to the marriage has been well documented... "Open mouth, insert foot."

Well, cheesecake in regards to MJ's barely concealing robe. But yes, it was romantic as well. Very true, the "relations" between Peter and MJ were hinted at, but tastefully, as you said. I assume that one of the goals behind BND was to "spice things up," which we havent seen and I'm not interested in anyway.
This whole erase the marriage thing has been handled badly, imo. If you want to tell stories that cant be told with Peter married, and erase a marriage to make it possible, than a writer should actually follow through with the story. So far, I havent seen any stories that must be told with a single Spidey.

I think one of my favorite moments with Peter and MJ was one of the last. The look of pride and love on her face when he comes crashing through the window to rescue her from the guy interrogating her (just after he pours his life story out to the cop in the cafe. "Go rescue your wife.") I really liked that moment in Sensational Spider-Man Annual #1. It was heart warming.

One of the most ABSURD and OFFENSIVE comments to race out of the evil ones mouth, was that all the intimacy that Peter and MJ shared still happened... just without the benefit of that annoying, character aging, story killing, albatross of a commitment called MARRIAGE. :whatever:
What about all the intimacy moments they shared before the wedding (that has now never taken place)...

About the newspaper strips...
I've been subscribing to the daily comic strip since 2004... www.dailyink.com
"In 1977, Lee brought Spider-Man into the newspapers. The seven-days-a-week strip, which he has written and edited since its inception, is among the most successful of all syndicated adventure strips, appearing in 500 newspapers worldwide."
Did y'all know that Stan's brother, Larry Lieber (note the alliteration) illustrates and co-writes it?
There was supposed to be a compilation published and Amazon has them listed as unavailable...

Ultimate Spider-man, Amazing Spider-girl and now..The Spectacular Spider-man tv series are the complete gems. All reasons to be a Spider-man fan. It's a shame that the 616 Spider-man is stuck in all this ridiculousness.
Anyway, the series is amazing. I missed today's ep, but got a chance to download and watch all the other episodes. The character interactions are spot on. Gwen, MJ and Harry are all enjoyable and Spider-man is funny as hell..Oh and the action is freaking amazing.

Looking for a permanent Peter/MJ reunion IS grasping at straws, sadly. There's no way that Marvel will let the two find happiness after all the crap that was pulled to rip them apart.

I think it was mentioned before in this thread, but MJ had some really nice moments through out "Maximum Carnage". Yea Yea, I know alot of fans rag on that storyline cause it was too long and so on, but it was one of the first stories I ever collected. I also loved it and well...Yea, it was a great story Imo.
Just recently brought the TPB and one of the best moments through out the story was the final kiss that MJ and Peter share in it right before he goes off to face Venom/Carnage for the last time.

I think its interesting that the subject of sex will be directly discussed in a Spider-Man comic. Sure, its been alluded to in past issues in the 616 universe, but I dont think its really been a subject. Ironic that it would happen in the "kid" Spider-Man book. Maybe thats for the best, though. Sex between married adults is one thing. How do you write about it? Whats the point? Sex between unmarried teens is something else. Its an "issue."

Yeah. It really shows the progression, doesn't it? I'm surprised it got past Quesada's attitude on Spider-Man and Peter 'growing up'. Though I guess it's HARDLY a marriage...
It's never been tackled before and I hope Bendis treats it as light-heartedly as possible without turning it in to a full-blown joke issue. Parker and MJ HAVE been thru a lot and, well, its no surprise that its a common thing now days for kids to have sex. The stigma has all but gone- or at least we all know it goes on.
But this is comic book land after all....
Aren't they underage in this, too? Or are they both 16?

They were 15, I thought. Then again I guess its been a year since Peter got bitten by the spider. They are below the age of consent here in Illinois anyway (17). Maybe its different in New York. Its not like I pay attention to the legal age limit for sex. Thats just creepy. :o
Place your bets: What will happen?
Will they have sex?
Decide not to?
Wait until they are older?
I'm taking door #3. (That sounds pretty bad.)

I hope they have sex. And make a sticky fluid joke.
OH I hope Bendis scripts a lengthy sex scene between Peter and MJ. :o
Naw, really...I hope they have sex. It'll be an anti-climax [so to say!] if they took the risks actually taking this issue to print and not going through with it.
I hope they do have sex...but it wouldnt detract anything from the character if they dont.
