Guest Stars: Justin Hartley (Oliver Queen/Green Arrow)

- Judging from the title - we're assuming that this is the one that formally introduces Green Arrow in a big way.

He's only done soaps so that's a negative from this side.

I thought he looked competent enough in the Aquaman trailer but that was only a minute or two.

See I can buy the whole Ollie and Lois thing b/c Ollie's always been a womanizer in the comics, so it's sort of a foregone conclusion he'd got for the "Alpha Female" of the group. Ollie's always been more like Tony Stark (Iron Man) and less like Batman in that regard

Well at least Lana and Lex is something that is a key point in there telling of the mythology as well as the show's history cause there like 2 of the main characters. The others make no sense and I'm gonna love to see the excuses all the Chloe fans make for the Jimmy/Chloe relationship having some sort of relevance

KalKai

K-Site's interview with Justin Hurtley:

What was the audition process like for Green Arrow?

They called me, and offered it to me, and wanted me to do it. So that was exciting. That was good, not to have to jump through any hoops. Because usually in acting, you have to go step by step.

Are they going to make you grow a goatee?

I don't know. I haven't heard any word of that yet.

So you haven't started filming yet?

I haven't started filming. I start filming, I think, at the beginning of August.

Is your Green Arrow anything like A.C., or is he more like Fox Crane [from Passions], or any other roles you have played before?

I think there's always going to be some part of me that comes through, in the characters that I play. That's a good question. He might have a little bit in common with A.C., in the cocky area maybe a little bit, you know, and a little bit in common with Fox Crane I guess, but definitely his own guy. I've gotta tell you, man. I am so looking forward to playing this part, because I think it's gonna be so fun to play a guy who's a rogue. It's a great part, you know.

Do you know anything about Ollie's background on Smallville?

I know that they're using some of the original mythology, the CEO, the billionaire, that kind of thing. Obviously with the arrows, the archer, and his talent, with regards to that. He comes to Smallville to unite the Justice League, I know that. And there's going to be a love interest; it's going to be Lois Lane. I wish I could tell you more, but honestly, I haven't seen anything yet. I just had a conversation with Al about it a little bit, and it seems like it's gonna be pretty fun.

Were you familiar with Aquaman or Green Arrow comics before taking the roles?

Before I took the roles, I was more familiar with Aquaman, I think, than I was Green Arrow. I don't know why. Maybe it's just because I have a lot of friends who are really heavy into comic books and stuff, and I think maybe they were Aquaman people. Maybe I was just around it more. But I've been reading up on him, and I've been doing my mythology homework, so, I'll be ready to go.

Why should your legions of fans who know your work from Passions watch Smallville?

I think without me, Smallville's a good show. I think Smallville is worth watching, just because I think that the actors on there do a good job. I'm a big fan of Rosenbaum. He's a great actor, isn't he? And you know, playing Superman is not very easy to do, and the way that it's done on Smallville, I think [Tom] does a good job too. I think it's a good show. I think it's well written. I think it's a fun show. It's a fun hour of television.

I am looking forward to getting on the show, for one reason, is just so that I'm back on television again. Because here I've been doing all this stuff since I left Passions. I've got a couple of movies that I did, I did a pilot, and I've got all this work in, that no one's been able to see. As far as anyone else knows, it's like, you left the show 7 months ago and you're gone. So nobody knows I've been doing all this work. So it'll be fun to get back on the screen.

It's gonna be neat. I think that they should watch it because they've only seen me play one character, essentially, on a soap opera. Which, there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm curious to show them another character, another side. I think that would be fun.

Does Ollie Queen have any history with Lex Luthor, and will they be interacting?

They do. They share a secret, from boarding school. Yeah, so they should be interacting. I hope to work with him. He can show me a couple things. He's very good. Very talented.

Is it difficult to shoot a series out of town, since your wife is still doing Passions in L.A.?

I have experience in it. I shot the pilot in Miami, and I think it was six weeks. My wife's not a big fan of staying away. She came almost every weekend. But this is going to be good, because they're not consecutive episodes, and I'm going to have a chance to go back and forth. I mean, preferably, yeah, I would shoot it in my backyard, and be able to see my daughter whenever I wanted, but that's just not the way it is.

If Al and Miles came to you and asked if you were interested in a Green Arrow spin-off, would you?

I'd be interested. I think those guys are great, and I think if they came to me and said "Hey Justin, we're interested in having--" I would probably say "yeah, okay, fine, sure." And then try to figure out what they were asking me. I'm behind those guys 100 percent. I believe in what they do, and I think they're good at what they do, and I think they're passionate about what they do. You see the product. I like Smallville. I think it's a good show. And that's their baby, so the proof is in the pudding, right?

But if they said "spin-off" I would say, "Where do I sign?"

Your daughter's middle name (Isabella Justice Hartley) - where did she get it? It's interesting, what with you playing a character who's getting together the Justice League...

It's funny that you bring that up, because my mother in law brought it up. She got the name, because Lindsay wanted my name in there somewhere, and it's a girl, so we couldn't really have "Justin" in there, and I didn't want "Justine," because I think Justine's a first name, more than a middle name. And so, we just chose Justice. Which is kind of what my name means, I guess.

Do you find it to be better to be working on a show that's a proven success, over doing a pilot?

Yeah, the thing didn't get picked up! [Laughs] I don't know. I think a good response to that would be, it's less stressful. It's less pressure. Because when you go to work, you're worrying about your work. You're not worrying about the business side of it, which I'm not on the business side of it, but when you're doing a pilot, it kind of creeps into your head a little bit, which I'm just not good at. It's less stress, I would say.

What do you have to say about your Comic-Con experience today?

It's amazing. It really, really is wonderful.

But How, Superman was the first Superhero. It really doesn't make sense the approach SV has been taking with his development. He's already gotten all the moral values he needs from Ma and Pa. Now he needs to just concentrate on training in the Fortress, not learning from playboy Billionaires, Whoever they may be.

he should open up clark more, like flash did to clark..he felt more "happier" about running...maybe O.Q can make clark more happier sisnce his pops deathh etc...n then maybe wen seaon final is over.... theres a bigggggg catastrophic battle and clark is going to call O.Q, Bart Allen , A.C, and Cyborg...n have the ultimate teen titan's dual =]...that would be soooooo awesome!...and miles millar n alfred gough puts in the justice league theme song in that back ;)

i'm sure there were pulp heroes before him(edit: Flash Gordon for one, also try Buck Rogers), but i thought you meant in "continuity". Because your post was specifically directed to another posters comment that Ollie should help him become superman. Thus your reference to Superman being the first hero was referring to the fact that since Supes is the first hero, no other superhero should be around to help him make that transition.

However, there were entire leagues of heroes such as the JSA that existed before Superman, like Alan Scott's Green Lantern and Jay Garrick's Flash in continuity.

not to mention that as a re-interpretation of the mythos, SV is not bound by an pre-conceived notions of how Supes became Supes.

True dat. I understand your agruement. Sorry I took what you were implying out of context. But in the framework of SV, I can see Alan Scott already being a Superhero and teaching young Clark, but Ollie is just some ordinary guy with extraordinary archery skills. He doesn't strike me as being able to teach the would be Champion of Earth.

If they want to bring someone in the help Clark deal with the lost of his Dad than Pete should make a return.:)

Remember in the Season 2 episode we found out that Lex had been expelled from Excelsior however, Lionel struck up a deal with the school that gave them a new library but Principal Reynolds had to go. I wonder if the expulsion had something to do with this secret.

Problem is if that can't remember that Clark can read kryptonian, chances are they won't remember that :(

I wonder if they will make mention of the News Paper in the Pilot?

I'm pretty stoked about Ollie on SV, but I'm iffy on his whole "I'm going to bring together the Junior Justice League" storyline.

I dunno, but it seems pretty early to be talking JL (although Lord knows they shove it down our throats enough when there's a guest spot).

I guess I'll wait and see, but I'm pretty skeptical.

It wasnt that he couldnt remember how to read Kryptonian it was that the symbols were all jumbled and it would take too much time for him to decipher it.

I like Hartley a lot from this interview and one that Craig did on k-site...

He's gotta use his bow. He's gotta have all those different cool arrows, I know that. So he's gonna use them. And hopefully it will be to shoot people, and not targets… [Laughs] Isn't that a horrible thing? "I hope I can shoot people!" But that's what you want to see! You don't want to see target practice, you want to see some bad guy get one in the ass.

I'm looking forward to Green Arrow, but at the same time judging from the past guests Green Arrow won't be wearing any costume, he won't be called GA and I bet he is just some dude who helps Clark by shooting arrows at people and at the same time wearing some sort of Green shirt. Smallville never seems to exaggerate when it comes to the Superman universe. Remember Mr Mxyzptlk.....They made him as real as possbile for Smallville. With the whole Lady Vengence Ep I'm hoping they give GA, name and costume.

the bit where Clark is getting ready to go out and play as Green Day is being played is quite possibly the corniest thing I have ever seen. Like even the producers at One Tree Hill were looking at that going "wow.....damn.......that's pretty ****ing corny". It makes Spell look like Batman Begins.

But to each is own. I mean of course Spell and Thirst were rubbish but I kinda (kinda is the key word) liked Kristin's turn as Isobel and playing a vampire. Like you could kinda tell she was having more fun with that role than the rigid shackled clana/jason storylines they give her usually and when an actor has fun with the role no matter how much they might ham it up, it's still a welcome and has potential for things to come.

True and I remember saying that over here back when Season 4 was running. Mid-way through we got word that Jensen was gonna leave. Now granted he had another show to go to but it wasnt set in stone and he obviously jumped at the chance to do Supernatural because he was going to be killed off. My thing then was "Why do Smallville keep doing this?" (or other shows) they'll put a character who you think is gonna be there for a while and then just adandon it (Henry Small, Adam Knight) after a short run. There could have been a lotta potential with Jason, could have made Lana react better to him and he could have been a key figure in the destiny/stone arc but done in a more authentic manner. But see that would be too easy for the writers.....

The thing about Jason is that throughout the story, he never struck me as the villian, but man-o-man if he didn't change in a hurry. His new show must have had something to do with it, or maybe people didn't like him. But Like I said, he started out as a neat new addition to the cast, and him and Clark seemed to get along as Coach/Student type thing.

Plus it helped the story along trying to seperate the Clark/Lana angst a little. I just remember being rather ticked that they went and quickly ruined a good character like that....plus him and Lana had great chemestry in the show. Sometimes I just don't understand execs.

Cause they listen to the wrong crowd on the audience. Seriously they put too much stock on what certain online fans think about the show and try to improve it off that (and you know they check out what's said online). Problem is they probably go to bull**** forums like Kryptonsite and listen to what they say. Them ******s simply dont like Lana without giving reason or suggestion on improvment. They love Chloe, why do you think she gets so much time on the show, a spin off web series and so much coverage in Smallville. Bunch a dorks...

But I aint bitter....

I'm sure they don't have much time to check out many forums. And Lana gets rather major arcs, they don't always fly well, but she gets them. Heck Season fours plot almost revolved around her and hardly featured Chloe.

Last season had much more Chloe, and still gave Lana alot to do, and it looks like the Lexana thing will last for a little while. I don't think they are biased too much as far as that goes.

Plus I like Chloe, I'm glad she has more screen time, I hated that in Season Four she hardly showed up.:(

Super_Ludacris

I doubt it, you think they have the time to come online to stay reading every thread and every post?

They do check out some forums sometimes maybe like K-Site & TWoP and do some interviews, but that's just it.

No of course they skim over but when you skim over stuff like K-site then thats pretty much the impression you get in terms of what "fans" want...

Brainiac 8
08-18-2006, 09:57 AM
But dude was in the opening credits, that gives the impression he's gonna be there as permanent member and as Brainiac said a lot of thought at the start this guy has potential then they just tanked his arc

Damn Medicine Woman...

That's what I was saying, I think they had some major plans for Jason, and he was a good counter balance to Lana. But something in there made them change their minds about his story....we know how quickly they decide to drop stories in this show....Level 33.1 anybody? :O

Super_Ludacris
08-18-2006, 10:02 AM
They should just have one episode where Clark finds Level 33.1 and everything in it....

KalKai
08-18-2006, 10:05 AM
He was just a coach, and Lana's BF, those aren't BIG roles. If they really had big plans for him they would have given him more screen time when the season started or give him something more important to do rather than just kiss Lana or coaching the football team.

When his mother appeared I liked him more, at least then things started to get interesting with the Teagues and the Luthors.

Lunar_Wolf

I don't remember which character it was who Lex brought down to some Level. And Lex said something like you'll feel at home here something like that but there was a huge mystery what was down there because it ended with Lex staring on into the distance at this place. I think it was the Mr Mxyzptlk ep. But it would be great if all the people Clark faced started joining together kinda like the ep where Lex is getting his brain fried.

To me that's when I started disliking him....and the story.
The whole Isobel/Teague stone story was so convaluted, and full of wholes that didn't make sense that it irritated me.

Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter now, it's over and done with.:O

Well, to be fair in the original comics, Oliver Queen was clean-shaven. So one could say that him without a goatee is more in line with the original continuity than him with a goatee. :)

The smallville costume does look poorly made. However, I see this as a step in the right direction. It's just a misstep in the design. I like the fact that they have introduced an actual costumed hero. Not just someone in a practical real world "costume". Now what they really need to do is start to lay the groundwork for Clark to start thinking of a costume. I don't think he should be wearing one, but show the wheels turning in his head. Eventually he's going to have to get there. It may only be the last episode and we may never see it. However, it's closer rather than far away now.

Green Arrow Comes To Smallville
The upcoming issue of TV Guide (week of September 11-17) has a short blurb about Green Arrow, who will be a recurring character in Smallville season six. Here's an excerpt:

"At the end of the October 5th issue of Smallville (which is joining the CW Network), a new costumed vigilante makes his debut. Green Arrow, a popular DC comics character known as much for his social conscience as his exceptional archery skills, is recruiting members for a crime-fighting Justice League. “He’s trying to get people with special abilities or like-minded people to join his quest”, says Justin Hartley, who plays Green Arrow (and his alter ego, billionaire Oliver Queen) in at least seven episodes".

"He’ll have to work hard to convince Clark Kent (Tom Welling), who doesn’t approve of vigilantism, to join his cause".
