Comic book (http://superherohype.com/news.php?id=4506#) artist Frank Miller will adapt and direct The Spirit, based on comic (http://superherohype.com/news.php?id=4506#) legend Will Eisner's classic strip, for Odd Lot Entertainment and Batfilm Productions, reports Variety.

Miller made his helming debut co-directing Sin City (http://superherohype.com/news.php?id=4506#) -- adapted from his graphic novel (http://superherohype.com/news.php?id=4506#) -- with Robert Rodriguez.

The Spirit, which debuted in 1940, tells the story of a masked detective who is believed to be dead. Using a mausoleum as his home base, Eisner's character fights crime in the dark shadows (http://superherohype.com/news.php?id=4506#) of Central City, using cunning and ingenious forms of punishment.

DC Comics (http://superherohype.com/news.php?id=4506#) has reprinted much of the comic series -- Eisner's best-known work -- in hardcover form.

Odd Lot bought rights to The Spirit from Eisner, who passed away last year, in 2004. The producers are Del Prete, Pritzker, and Batfilm's Michael Uslan (Batman (http://superherohype.com/news.php?id=4506#) Begins).

"I intend to be extremely faithful to the heart and soul of the material, but it won't be nostalgic. It will be much scarier than people expect," said Miller.

Miller said he's putting together a treatment that consists in large part of panels from the "Spirit" strip. Shooting is expected to start in late spring.

Batfilm co-founder Benjamin Melniker is executive producing. Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm's F.J. DeSanto will co-produce.

I am kind of excited of Miller being director. I think he could add some good touches to The Spirit, but I don't want the film to become something lwhere it has that Sin City look and feel.
I kind of want to see of how he goes with the film, before I say yes or no.

I have no knowledge about this character at all but from that little info I think im gonna love it. If its anything liek Batman Begins its gotta be good and yes Frank Miller is know for Sin City but you gotta remember he also done Batman Year One and Daredevil Born again. He knows how to re invent a character without ruining anything, might even make them better.

dunno how I feel about this... Sin City, the movie, was really Rodriguez's doing. and Miller hasn't really given us anything great in years.

The only part that I'm questioning is his directorial role on the film. Because, might be wrong- the only time he's directed before was when he co-directed with Rodriguez on Sin City which is different than solo directing.

this is pretty cool. The Spirit is right up Frank's alley. Crime-drama noir with a superhero twist....or something like that. But i think this is gonna be pretty sweet.

although, i thought Jeph Loeb was writing the script? Becuase that would have kicked even more ass. Frank Miller directing a Jeph Loeb script about Will Eisner's The Spirit. It couldnt possibly have gotten more badass than that.

I'm not quite sure how to think about this yet. Who knows? Maybe Miller could be this great director just waiting to jump out. It's definitely interesting though.

Are you sure that's not fake? It could be real, but I kind of doubt it because we just got the Frank Miller news, it seems a little early for a teaser poster.

Didn't they release a Wonder Woman teaser on the day Joss Whedon was announced?

I would love to see a good adaptation of "The Spirit"....I first read him over 40 years ago....and love the characters. The TV movie made in the late70's had it's cute moments....but it was quite a disappointment. I like Frank Miller's comic work....but not so sure about his directing abilities. We'll have to wait and see what else info comes out on this.

Frank Miller helming The Spirit is, possibly, the best news ever. Period.

I agree with c. Lee. I'm on the fence with Miller's directing abilities. As a writer, he's great however.

Is this movie being released under Warner Bros?

Can we move this the Misc. Comics Films? Cause the Spirit is not a DC published comics and it never was.

Umm, hell yeah? Frank absolutely worships Eisner, I'm sure he'll treat this with utmost respect. Can't wait.

It was announced that he'd be getting a new ongoing series. Written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke. DC is also publishing a one-shot crossover called Batman/The Spirit. Which is coming out before the series debuts.

I dont know what to think. I guess I should be happy hes not writing it. But I think somehwere he said he wanted to make it scary, and The Spirit never has been scary.

Frank Miller's Take on The Spirit
Source: Edward Douglas
July 22, 2006

Hours before The Spirit movie panel at Comic-Con in San Diego, Frank Miller talked to ComingSoon.net/SuperheroHype.com about his plans for the movie, based on the early Will Eisner hero, which he'll start working on after finishing Sin City 2 with Robert Rodriguez.

"I'll take some of the lessons I learned from Robert Rodriguez and that's to use the comics as storyboards and doing my best to be as faithful as possible," Miller told us. "Now, the tone I have in mind will probably surprise a lot of readers, because they're used to the kindler, gentler Spirit from after Will got drafted and his assistants took over. This is going to be a scarier take on it, much more like the earlier stories."

Considering The Spirit's long publishing history, we wondered whether Miller had any idea which stories he might use for the movie. "There's a couple," he replied. "I want to use several of the femme fatales and right now, I'm putting together how they're all going to mix up together."

He will be using a similar green screen technique used by Robert Rodriguez to make the movie in terms of presenting Will Eisner's very distinctive looking world, and he even said that he's going to try to blend The Spirit title into the cityscape just like what could be seen on Eisner's title pages.

"I'm not going to beat you over the head with the logo, but it'll be just the same way that Robert was able to capture the feel of Sin City, I think capturing the more romantic look of Eisner's city will be a lot of fun."

And as far as when they'll start on Sin City 2? "It all depends on when they're finished with 'Grind House,' but I'm still on deck." He's still hoping that Angelina Jolie will play the role of Eva in the sequel.

ComingSoon.net/SuperheroHype.com should have more with Miller on both movies, as well as Zach Snyder's 300 very soon.

Hmmm, I dont really like what im hearing about going with Eisner's pre-War Spirit. Reason being is that i think most people are more familiar with the post-war Spirit.

Neto Magnus

wasn't he a little campy post war?

Like most comics, probably. But not really.

I kind of like how Frank is going with it. As long he doesn't stray too much off I am okay. I like what he is doing visual wise with the city.
I don't see Frank Miller doing anything campy on characters. A little humpr, but not camp.

I wonder if Rodriguez will have anything to do with this? Maybe he will be Frank's Cinematographer or Editor... maybe both.

When they advertise this it needs to say "From the creator of Sin City and the producers of Batman Begins" in the trailer and on the poster. Those two movies are held in pretty high regard by most people so associating them with this will help at the box office...

As long as Frank Miller casts Clive Owen for the role, iīm happy with it
