View Full Version : Routh needs to change his trainer and nutrionist for the sequel
retconned

I just read an article about Brandon Routh's training regiment and diet in preperation for Superman Returns, and all my question's about Routh's physique were answered in a couple of paragraphs, and I just want to add in before I get started that yes, he wears a muscle suit.
In the article, Routh says that while training for Superman Returns, he mostly stuck to circuit style weight lifting, which is for the most part machines, and ate alot of fruits and veggies for his diet. I was in f-ing amazement after reading this article. That is NOT how you bulk up for a superhero role in which your character you play is supposed to be a bulkier guy. I know Routh was doing what he was told, but damn, change up who your listening to. Even Tobey Maguire hit the heavy wieghts and drank six protein shakes a day along with pasta, cheese, and what not, and even then all he got was really cut, where as Superman should look like a big strong farm boy, ala Tom Welling.
Brandon, for the sequel, hit the big heavy weights an hour a day and scarf down all the food you want except fast food and pop. And then, about 4-6 weeks before filming, clamp down on the diet with more lean proteins and less carbs.

Routh can be improved on, but thats just my opinion. A better written script and better dialouge can only help though.

I could tell he obviously had some padding over his legs to signify really defined muscular quadriceps, but I never knew he wore a full-body suit.

He has a swimmer's body. He was built more like Spider-Man than Superman. All though, when you are as strong as Superman what in God's name can you left in order to build muscle mass?

A 6'4, 225 lb person is not that big of a person and certainly wouldn't be as large as what is often drawn in the comics.

His size in SR was perfect.
Anyone who thinks he should look like he's drawn in the comics, go look at the guy who played in that fan film...
Routh could stand to put on a few lbs. but I thought his size was perfect.
Because of the cape, it looks best to have a tall and kinda "slim" supes.

Actually, his rationale for eating ample fruits and veggies throughout the diet is warranted. I train people for a living. Keeping those in the diet helps to curb insulin spikes (which is a prime hormonal contributor to bodyfat storage) in the case of veggies, and replenishes glycogen stores in the case of some fruits. This is why he looked large, but very defined throughout the film. Whereas, Reeve got fat during the filming of S:TM due to Prowse's archaic methods(for proof visit Caped Wonder to see him without a shirt). Routh put on considerable weight for the filming and was consuming ample amounts of protein to do so. The chief reason for this is the fact we know he gained lean weight (as he looked very lean in the film), and that it is physically IMPOSSIBLE to gain muscle mass without ample protein consumption. Cheese is not a contributor to lean mass gain. It's primarily composed of saturated animal fat and has minimal protein to match. Tom Welling has softened considerably since season one, so Routh sure as hell doesn't need to follow in those footsteps. His physique may not have fit your taste, but he was bigger and in better shape than anyone else who has played Superman, with the exception being that mongoloid Mike O'Hearn. Then again, as far as I'm concerned, he doesn't even count. I'm curious as to the rep scheme and what kind of lifting schedule Routh was on.

Well, the way I see it --> There's only one scene in the whole movie where Routh looks atleast a bit like Superman and that's the accosted one on the roof.
Otherwise, especially when he's walking towards the bullets, he looks more like a giant sausage. Don't know how else to describe it.
Despite the fact that he's big and lean there's nothing impressing on him.
I don't have a problem to write it over an over again: If the audience can take Clark with glasses without further explanation they can handle a bulky Clark/Superman like George Reeves, for example. :supes:

ok, I agree with the first post to a degree. But it's a complicated matter.
the complication is Clark Kent vs. Superman. A big guy in a suit, looks like he's fat. A big guy will look good in the tights, but will not look good in a suit. Conversely, a guy that fits into a suit well, will more than likely look pretty damn skinny in spandex (whatever).
I think that the use of the muscle suit is a fair approach to superman. It allows the actor to play Clark, and look like Clark should, while also allowing Superman to look as he should.
Of all the superheroes out there, using a muscle suit for Supes is the most logical approach for the above mentioned reasons. Even though there is this concept of suspension of disbelief, it is really the best way to sell the duo personalities that superman has.
The Question
07-21-2006, 11:15 AM
I actually don't like Superman being really bulky. I mean, with his strength, he couldn't have had any weights that would have given him that much streign that weren't far to large and unweildy to practically train with unnoticed.

It's all in the cut of the suit...if it is well made/cut, then unless teh guy is 300lbs he'll look trimmer.

not trim enough. Above a certain size, it becomes more and more difficult. Sandy Collera's Supermanvs.Batman short really showed this well. He got a huge guy to play supes, but put him in the clark costume, and he looks silly.

This is not 'The Incredible Hulk', he looked fine.
Clark tries to blend in with humanity.
If you have him looking like junior Mr. Olympia, there's no way you can have him blending in with a suit and tie......not unless you have the entire cast buffed out (including extras)

I'm just thinking of guys like Thomas Jane or any number of buff college football recievers, QB's and DB's...they look massive shirtless, but throw a suit on them and they look good.
Routh need not be huge...but a little bigger than he was would help

79, when you put it that way, I totally agree.
I think when you look at the three principal writers for SR, you can see that they're almost slight in their own personal builds.
So perhaps rather than an out-from -a comic book physique, we were treated to their ideal for Superman. Don't forget Singer has admitted that he never read the comics.

It just goes to show that a load of people go on about something they know very little or nothing about.
First your comment about weight lifting with machines and a linked in comment at the end of the post in which you say get on the "heavy weights". Are you saying that you can only lift a light or medium weight on a machine? Because the last time i checked on some machines you can lift upto 150kg or more, which i think very very few people would class as light or medium.
Secondly you say tobey maguire had "six protein shakes a day". This is incorrect. Tobey maguire is a vegitarian and the mainstream protein shakes are made out of whey which is an animal protein, secondly i know this to be wrong as he has stated several times his main source of protein was tofu "prepared in weird and wonderful ways". As cheese is also a animal protein Tobey would refuse to eat this. This is a fact and shows how miss informed you really are. finally on the Tobey issue do you know what "cut" even means in this context?
Finally, "eat all the food you want, except for fast food and pop" ok, Brandon why not eat loads of special K or cheese on toast or beer or sausage's or beans and do "heavy weights" (which by the way means nothing if you use poor form) and i'm sure you come in at a robust 300ibs for all the fans out there.

This is the reason for Routh's size in the film. Don't listen to anyone else here. Routh can and has gotten bigger in the past. The problem was Warner's did a survey amoungst all things women to find out what body type is sexy to them and then made routh contractually obliged to reach that type of body. I also believe they sculpted the muscle prior to his casting and was contractually obliged to stay at a certain weight/size to fit the muscle suit. That is what Mingen-whatever and Tom Bronson said in the interview done with this site before the movie came out. But his body size was determined by a bunch of women surveyed who dont know crap about Superheroes.

Never heard this story before - whether BS or real, I think it's a stupid idea. Guess I should credit them for trying to increase the % of women in the viewing audience, but they really don't get it - make the guy cute, likable, and in shape; give him some romantic situations and/or lines; make the female love interest someone pretty and smart and OLD ENOUGH FOR THE ROLE and NOT oversexed, underdressed, or too googly-eyed over him; don't go too overboard on the gore; we'll come.
In any case, they didn't ask me! I prefer TW's build over BR's and would not have asked for a slighter Superman. I would have told them to let BR bulk up and THEN make the suit. Oh, and to let us see a bit of him for more than the few seconds in the hospital scene with the oxygen mask. Spacesuit was great too, but more would have been nice...
That's one...

:whatever: I know that but i was talking about the supposed ideal type of body that women want.
There is no one type.
I have several female friends who strongly prefer tall, skinny guys. Yes, skinny. Not built. Think Janet near the beginning of RHPS: "I don't like men with too many muscles."
I've known women who like big, bulky guys and prefer a football player's build (running backs, presumably, not linebackers). I've known others who are only into legs and prefer soccer players or bikers (we're not talking motorcycles here). Some prefer basketball players. Some, gymnasts. Some, yes, swimmers.
I've known women who prefer men to be much taller than they are.
I've known women who prefer short men. Bearded men. Bald/-ing men.
Yes, there are women who like big, muscular guys. Not all of them. And they certainly don't agree on which muscles they prefer to have extra-large.
So if someone is surveying a thousand or more women on their preferences for male body types, they'll need to average the results and NOT just take the result that has the most votes. The whole survey idea is pretty stupid anyway, as I said earlier. If the guy onscreen is sweet and nice and charming and articulate, his exact build and even his looks won't matter as much as SatEl suggests the moviemakers think is important.
Not that we'd turn down some great screen views of an on-screen hunk, of course. But watching brainless eye-candy isn't nearly as much fun - as appealing, shall we say - as watching someone with all of those other qualities but less than an "ideal" build.

Is this really still a debate? Or did I drive a little to fast in a Delorean?

I had no problem with Brandon Routh as Superman. Reeve's performance was superior, especially in his embodiment of the more heroic side of Supes. Routh might be able to affect that as well, but the script for Superman Returns was just more sombre than the Reeve flicks.
The only "stand up and cheer" scene was the jetliner rescue (though that was one awesome scene), so there wasn't much for Routh to grin about. By comparison, remember Reeve's introduction to Metropolis as Superman? He catches Lois and says, with a grin (like he's having fun), "Don't worry, miss, I've got you!" There were no moments like that in the Returns script for us to see whether Routh could pull off that side of Superman - sheer joy in being a hero.
No, what bothered me about Routh was how the new suit looked on him. The guy was in very good shape, just as good as Reeve, but the suit as it was designed made him look lanky rather than powerful and commanding. Now here's the same suit design on a videogame version of Routh:

Notice that on a Superman whose physique is like the one we see in the comics, the Returns suit actually works! But Routh doesn't have a physique like that (and neither did Reeve), so the suit has to be designed differently in order to achieve the same powerful effect in a live-action version.
