- WhirlyElectric's in my like, top 30 favorite albums. I had a long chat with Billy Duffy when they played Saltair in S.L.C., Utah btw and he was super-cool, very nice, but oddly I was telling him about this Robert Johnsonified cover I did of "Memphis Hipshake" and he asked,
"Who did Memphis Hipshake?"

How could you forget a song that you helped write and record, on a major release? Lol, he was sober at the time too, 'cause he said the only way he and Ian can survive on tour is if they alternate as to who's getting wasted the night of the show.

- WhirlyWhile I know the average listener is not aware of it consciously, it could be because they have about 15 songs with the exact same chord progression. I'd call it embarrassing if it weren't so comical.

An old girlfriend didn't believe me so in the car I sang Fire Woman lyrics(and melody) over 5 or 6 of their songs for her and it blew her mind. Lol.

Which two?? Because they had a long string of hits!I just like the hits....I always just like the hits (except in the cases of Led Zeppelin and the Beatles and lesser known bands like Raging Slab, etc.)

I liked "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and I liked "Free Your Mind".

But I hated the ham-fisted lyrics to "Free Your Mind".

I liked the guitar riff on that and....just the texture of their voices.

I guess * * it was Vernon Reid that played "Black Cat" for Janet Jackson",....but, I have this vague idea that Vernon actually did the riffs for "Free Your Mind"....

Who sings Walk the Dinosaur? I heard it on the radio earlier (have not heard it in a long time) and now it's stuck in my head. That's a 80s song, isn't it?

"Open the door, get on the floor, Everybody walk the dinosaur..."

understandable, but sometimes you have to gulp down the synth-medicine in order to enjoy the......

erm.....f*** it.........NM.

But the Doors suck, btw.

"Come on come on come on TOUCH me babe! *impossibly cheesy horn section* Can't you see.....that I am unafraid *even cheesier horn section than ChiCAGO ever dared to try!*

Can't you seeEEEee we don't need bass-playERS

Now I'm, gonna Cheese-Fest.....till the Heavens....blah...blah blah blah....

The Synth stuff was weird//// but cool.

Most of the stuff I like from the 80's had already existed in the 70's or even the 60's, but only got popular until the 80's.

Motley Crue
Testament
Megadeth
sepultura
Sodom
Immortal
Carnivore
Venom
Bathory
Samhian
Dio

Bands that pre-existed 80's but became popular during that decade:
Iron Maiden
Judas Preist
Thin Lizzy
The Scorpions
Motorhead
Accept
Queen
The Ramones
The Misfits
Van Halen

There is a ton more I like, I'm just listing my top favorites.

Impossible to list all the talented musicians that were recording or big in the '80's, though there have been some great mentions in this thread. I can't believe no one has brought up Asia. They pretty much carried the torch for Prog-Rock in the early 80's.

None of those bands could ever hold my interest.
I'm more of a 60/70's kind of guy

Hendrix, The Doors

The 80's always just come off as bad techno keyboard music, and hair bands.

the smiths

the cure

New Order

R.E.M.

Tears For Fears

Galaxie 500

Breathless

The Arms of someone new

The Sisters Of Mercy (well, kind of a hair band I guess)

The Jesus and Mary Chain

Echo and the Bunnymen

A flock of seagulls (Again, sort of a hair band)

Dramarama

Suicidal Tendencies

Dead Kennedys

P.I.L.

The Fixx

Squeeze

Suzanne Vega

Oingo Boingo

Madness

The Jam

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83,I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consimante professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
