There's a REALLY good chance that this movie will suck now (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/11526/Halo-Movie-Director-Revealed/)...

I wouldn't say that this will suck yet. He should be given a chance to proove himself before we start saying it will suck. Hes also a gamer it seems so I am not worried yet

why not Peter Jackson?
Manny Calavera
08-09-2006, 01:57 PM
Because this movie is a cash in and not an attempt at making a cinematically good, quality movie.

But this guy has a chance of making a good film.

No, he doesn't. I mean, I can understand what you're saying, we don't know what he's capable of, he could turn out to be good...but he's not going to. If the script were any good, if decent actors were attached, if this project were being taken seriously, they wouldn't have gotten a totally unknown director, that sort of stuff just doesn't happen with projects like this.

I know what you mean, this movie is not getting attention.
Sadly it will most likely flop this way.

Maybe they got him to direct because he has shown he can be a damn good director, he's available, and you don't have to give him your left arm and leg for him to take the job.

Or maybe it's a ****ty script.

is it gonna be mostly cgi?
Bat Brain

Well, he directed this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4ckJFNkra8
Not sure how much that says about his action directing.

You can watch all his previous work here: http://www.spyentertainment.com/director_03.html - Just click on 'View Reel'
There's actually some really cool CGI work in some of them. He could surprise alot of people with Halo.

he's a great cg artist, not sure about his directing skills though.

His short film seems pretty good he from the little bit I saw it seems he can give halo a real looking movie with a gritty war like feel to it. If anything I think this guy can do a decent job.

a short film and commercial director taking on the epic saga of Halo

Andrew Niccol directed commercials before making the awesome "Gattaca", "Truman Show" and "Lord of War".
I hope this is a Niccol situation, and not a Uwe Boll one.

Or maybe it's a ****ty script. The last script was awesome. But they fired the guy who wrote that script

If they already owned his script, why not?

The script was proven awesome by LatinoReview, but this director needs to pull his weight too.

I wanted Peter Jackson directing. :(
I did too. At least he's producing and getting talent for the visuals and everything. The script is good, and they're following the Bungie Bible. This will pretty much ensure it's not as bad as most videogame movies.
Of course, the director and actors will all need to step up also.
Samuel L Jackson, please :(

I dont see why you're all saying no one is taking this seriously...they paid a million dollars for the first draft of the script for gods sake, Peter Jackson is producing, and Bungie has creative control...you people who are saying it's a cash in are really f**king high, or really f**kin stupid :o

I've heard the scrpt is great. Plus, every director has to start somewhere. James Cameron didn't just make Terminator or Aliens first time round you know.

I didn't know this Blomkamp guy has won three awards already. Plus reading the interview has given me even more confidence in him.

The script was proven awesome by LatinoReview, but this director needs to pull his weight too.yeah, except they got rid of this awesome, 4-star script that was getting great praise on the internets and replaced it with a new one by a different screenwriter after having wasted all that money on the first script. Then they hired someone nobody's ever heard of it to direct it...there have never been any great videogame movies before this, especially one so high-profile, so I say people have a reason to worry. But we'll see how it goes. :o

That's just an internet rumor. Microsoft paid a hefty amount for that script, I really doubt they're wasting it. Maybe a revision or something, but they wouldn't waste the ticket that got them approved in the first place. With all the control Microsoft has over this film, it's probably an improvement.

It's not a rumor. They interviewed the guy that's writing up the new draft.

What are you working on at the moment?
I write for film now, mostly – appropriately enough, I’m currently adapting Halo for producers Mary Parent, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. I’ve got another novel finished that needs a second draft – and maybe someday, I’ll be able to work in games. I certainly hope so.
How far along with the screenplay are you?
Just starting in on an entirely new second draft.
[NOTE 07/19/06 - DB Weiss pinged us again and said he wanted to make sure this was made clear: "When I said I was starting "An entirely new second draft," I meant *my* second draft. I didn't mean to imply that there weren't many elements of the Garland draft in it, which of course, there are, in both drafts I've written."]

In other words, he's just making the Garland one flow better. It happens on pretty much every movie.

I was afraid this was going to turn into BloodRayne or something. I have no problems with more drafts. :relief:
