Would Option 1 also include things like the "Ghost Rider Countdown Thread"?

Why not simply say that if a post has 3 words or less it doesn't count towards your post count? (and quoted posts, images and URL links are not included in the word count).

- Problem with this idea is I don't know how difficult it is to set up.

I'd definately go for both... good ideas and an easy way to sift out people who do the threads just for the fun of it and those who spam for the avatars... there are both types of people out there

I like this, but it would easily be worked around by spammers.

Posting instead of "teh r0xers!" would end up "u suck, teh r0xers!"(forgive me, i don't know how these posts are typically worded...I don't post them or read them)...easily worked around. Option number 1 to me is great. Games aren't discussion, which is a forum's primary fuction. They shouldn't count towards post count. I've posted a few times in those threads myself, when bored, but they tend to make me even more bored, so i have no problem with it not counting towards post count.

Option number 2 is another good thought, and I'd willingly support it.

Spider-Man™

I'd support option 2 as well. To be honest the idea is a great one.

Drakon
08-16-2006, 01:25 PM
And once again I need an "other" option... Or better yet the choices should have been broken down a bit more.

Option 1:
A. Games Forum = good idea - however, be prepared for Community to become very quiet if this is done.

B. Doesn't add to post count = bad idea - the people who post to those "games" threads are making a contribution. It may not be one you appreciate, but it still takes them time and effort to put in their posts. They are usually not swearing, they are confining their "spam" to the proper threads, and they are having fun. Some of those "game" threads actually teach you something about the other posters (favourite foods, music they like to hear, things they care about, things that tick them off, etc.) By learning about our fellow posters we learn a little bit about society too.

Option 2:
A. "Rewards" should be based on both post count and length of stay = yes

B. Do I agree with the number of posts and the length of stay = no, I would have set the bar a little higher for both for some of the "earlier" options.

You and your "other" options. Do you ever pick "A" or "B", or do you always have to be this difficult? :oldrazz:

I know Community would become kinda quieter, but this is something I'm more than prepared for. With luck, with fewer games threads, people will be more willing to make GOOD, SOLID, threads than can honestly be discussed, as opposed to the passing by "Hi! How are you?" "Good, you?" or 15 posts in the "Last thing you wore on your head" topic. Bring back the community feel to the place.

It seems that a lot of people are wanting posts to count. Maybe another thread would be in order.

The beforementioned requirements are nothing final, but just an idea, so that people understand what I am trying to say. If the idea is approved and executed, it will go under the looking glass to adjust how we see fit.

I didn't vote on option 1 because I could really care less (seeing as how I don't visit the Community Forum often).

I voted yes on option 2. However, I do have one thing I'd like to see: the 20kb limit on 50x50 avys raised to at least 30kb. It's an uber pain in the a$$ trying to do decent animated GIFs for people when you've only got 20kb to work with.

You're preaching to the choir, my friend. I've been making avatars since 50x and 20KB was the only size you could make.

I'm not sure, but I think this IS an installable mod for the software, but personally, I think it better to just leave the idea as it is. Generally, the fewer installed alterations to teh forums, the less that can mess up.

sinewave
08-16-2006, 02:21 PM
why not just lower the amount of posts needed to gain a larger avvy or a quote? in my opinion, the wait is too long and if you don't like people making one-word posts in "what's the last thing you ate/alphabet" threads then don't force people to wait out some arbitrary postcount/vetting process. it's silly.

Pruning the users would be a fun idea to free up some popular names, but as far as I could tell, it'd just be more trouble than it's worth. Besides, if they've got more than X posts then there's a chance that they'd come back. Hell, I've seen people come back from 6 year hiatus on other forums.

I personally like both options. There are so many people who get banned again and again that don't do anything but go back to the community threads and spam until they're right back where they were. I like the idea of rewarding people who have seniority, not just because I've been around a while, but because there are many who've been here alot longer than me who shold be entitled to more rewards or benefits than someone who just joined up so they could rant in opposition to the consensus view and reaches the 3,000 post mark (or whatever it is).

Just my thoughts.

Option 2 sounds really great:up: , because see, for me i cant come on here as often as most of the other users do or post as much as i'd like to, because i run a very busy life, so either when i do come on i mostly just read the boards, and if i find a thread that interests me and i have an opinion on it then i will post.

look at it this way; i've been here since February and i've only got like 75 posts, whereas i've seen new users who signed up after me and have like 3000 posts whitin the next few months, and ill still have 50. so this idea i think will stop the other users judging me and others on their postcount without even thinking how long i've been here. I'm pretty sure i'm not the only one on here who feels this way and reads more than posts. :O

just thought i'd give my reason. :o

I voted for both choice 1 and 2.There should be a forum that can talk about useless issues, and not increase your post count. It seperates the junk from the material that could really be important or such.

Choice 2 is also good, instead of spamming to get 3,000 posts. The join date should mean something.Perhaps spamming will slow down, and more respectful replies to threads can come out of it.If the changes go into effect,i do hope i can get a larger avatar size.
