Speaking of the PlayStation 3, 2K was very forthcoming during our demo when it came to discussing the benefits of the new system and how it would affect The Darkness. Because of the Blu-ray format, for example, Starbreeze plans to include additional videos that exploit the "television watching" feature which currently consists of the classic "Nosferatu" vampire silent film (in its entirety) and five 30-minute Popeye cartoons. The publisher isn't sure what the PS3-exclusive videos will be just yet, but we suggested an episode of Top Cow's old Witchblade TV series -- not because we think every game should have a moment of pure and total horridness, but because we think it would be funny.

This is something I think we're going to see more of on the PS3, extras, simply because they can with the added disc space.

I dont know, seems really stupid and pointless. Filling up space simply because its there.

Seriously, what sad, sick **** would even want to watch a ****ing film on a T.V inside a ****ing videogame?

The game movie that game with Xenosaga: Episode II bored me to tears. I turned it off half way through. The pacing was crippling sedate.

If they're going to make a movie within the game, they should at least make sure it's paced like a movie, and not a videogame cutscene, as was the case with Xenosaga.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHY FORCING 'BLU-RAY' ON GAMERS WAS A HUGE MISTAKE BY 'SONY'. MOST DEVELOPERS AREN'T GOING TO INVEST THE TIME/$$ TO INCLUDE ANYTHING SUBSTANTIAL, THAT UTILIZES THE ADDITIONAL SPACE ON THE DISCS ; INSTEAD, YOU'LL GET S**T LIKE THIS, WHICH IS EQUIVALENT TO THE EXTRA DISCS YOU GET WITH "SE" OR "CE" GAMES ON THE '360'. :down:rolleyes:

I would rather have 'real' exclusive content anyway... Yay for the X360 version I guess.

But then, most developers don't make great games anyway.

The good developers will utilise the extra space properly. Yes, it will be rare, but the good developers out there making the good games will put the extra space to good use.

NO......THEY WON'T. THERE HAS YET TO BE A "GOOD DEVELOPER" WHO'S MANAGED/TRIED TO FILL UP AN ENTIRE DVD-9 DISC........AND THE FORMAT IS 7 YEARS OLD (ON CONSOLES).

'OBLIVION' ONLY TAKES UP ABOUT 5GB OF THE 9GB AVAILABLE........AND THAT'S WITHOUT HAVING A STANDARD HDD TO RELY ON.

don't you think it'll be more immersive having tvs that actually show stuff that could be on tv. more content lessens the repetition factor. and these are just the early days of the difference blu-ray will make to games anyway.

O.K.......WHAT PART OF "THERE HAS YET TO BE A "GOOD DEVELOPER" WHO'S MANAGED/TRIED TO FILL UP AN ENTIRE DVD-9 DISC........AND THE FORMAT IS 7 YEARS OLD" DID YOU NOT COMPREHEND? 'BLU-RAY' WILL BE NO DIFFERENT......TRUST ME.

Surely with next-gen games there's more scope to fill up a disc that there would have been seven years ago on a less accomplished console?

it's also known for repetition of assets. creating more does normally cost more tho so that's the biggest hurdle. bigger more detailed games cost more to make it's the only reason they haven't grown yet. but prices come down. assets can be created in such quality that the can be reused in different games. i mean once you have a tree that is the perfect tree for a game. you'll never have to create that particular tree again. and you can use it in another game world. keep adding more different trees each time and you've got a bigger more detailed world, which takes up more space on a disc. the process should be about creating libraries of models now. and continously adding to them. finding ways to modify them for different styles. and basically scaling them down in detail to work on present hardware.

O'RLY? YOU ALSO FAIL TO READ, AND RECOGNIZE THE OBVIOUS. "7 YEARS AGO" IS WHEN THE FORMAT BEGAN............BUT IT'S STILLBEING USED ON A "NEXT-GEN" CONSOLE, IN THE '360', AND STILL NO DEVELOPER HAS COME CLOSE TO UTILIZING MUCH MORE THAN HALF OF A DVD.

SERIOUSLY....I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH SIMPLER I CAN EXPLAIN THIS.

but the actual data usage has increased 4 fold in seven years. so if the trend continues, DVD wont be enough with in 3 to 4 years.

This is a huge example of why Blu-Ray was such a waste. Mentok said it best, "filling up space because it's there". You can expect crap like Final Fantasy 10923 and Metal Gear Solid 4 to do the same, with a 30 minute cgi sequence every two steps becauase hey, the space is there. Have fun with your $600 copy of Nosferatu, suckers.

No, because we have much better, ever improving compression algo's, we have much better graphical techniques that don't rely on just huge textures, etc. I mean, hell, Oblivion is likely one of if not the largest game this generation, with full voice acting, all High resolution textures, and even it has a large amount of space left over on the DVD, enough for several full length movies as a matter of fact. The idea that Blu-Ray and it's extra space are in some way needed is yet another in a long list of Sony's lies this generation. The real reason for it's inclusion has nothing to do with games. The real reason for it's inclusion is that Sony intends to use the PS3 as a trojan horse to help the blu-ray format beat out the HD-DVD format, not for any advantage it gives to PS3 games.

Either way, I was never arguing that developers will use up the whole Blu-Ray disc. I was arguing that they'll use the Blu-Ray disc space in better, more useful ways than tacking on a movie.

And just so I also feel in with the crowd, I'll go crazy with the bolding to needlessly emphasise particular words.

I have to bold things to make sure you see them and to increase the chances of you actually reading before writing more ridiculously poor responses, as many in this forum seem to have a problem with reading what they're responding to.

heh if microsoft make the generation shorter than that amount of time they'll never make any money. 10 year life cycle. microsoft have been trying to catch up with their HDDVD add on and some games will only be availiable on HDDVD for it eventually. same problem as the CD addon for the genesis tho.

Ah, an ingenious idea. I might have known your ridiculous use of the bold code was for reasons of cunning and guile rather than a simple flair for the dramatic.

Though for the record, bolding an entire post makes it more, rather than less, difficult to read. I'm sure you have some inventive reasoning for this too however, so I shan't press the point.

more just being predictive based on statements from microsoft themselves. their action so far and comments make this eventuality a strong possibility.

I can't believe you guy are complaining about developers including extras. Yeah not all developers will do it, or do a good job, but those that do a good job will make it something special.

Developers have been hitting the DVD barrier, Mark Rein has said as much, but it depends on the games. The reason you don't see devs including many extras on their games, typically is because they have already stacked the DVD fairly full, or they are lazy. In the first situation they don't have room for a full length 10 minute making of or what have you. Why do you think MGS3 Subsistence comes on two discs? Because they can't fit the main game+everything that's included on it and the multiplayer data on one DVD.

And heck, if I can get gimmick content that I would of otherwise had to pay an extra ten dollars for in a special edition, why not.

With not having to worry about space period, you can epect a lot of devs to just throw extras onto the disc, which suits me just fine.

And if they want to encode any of their stuff in HD, video wise for a making of or whatever, they're going to need that space.
