What a ****ing abomination. Michael Bay couldn't damage the franchise as much as that movie did. They took the heart and soul, out of the most prized franchise of it's time, and riped it to oblivion. Im sorry but you can't have a true Transfomers Movie by killing off the Characters that made the series what it was. Killing Prime, Starscream, Megatron (I know, but Galvatron Sucks compared to Megs) Prowl, Iron Hide, Wheeljack, Skywarp, Thundercracker, basically the main cast. Then replaced it with a bunch of newcomers. They were ok, but I rather have Ironhide and Wheel jack instead of Hotrod, Blur, Arcee and Kup. So to everyone who's saying Michael Bay is a hack. Just remember what that Movie did to the franchise. It was all downhill after that movie. Once they realized the errors they made. They tried to bring Starscream & Prime back, but it was to late, the ratings were dismal, and the show was cancelled.

So when major characters die in a story/show/movie that you like, the movie automatically sucks?

LOL! I'm watching it right now! And yes as much as i love the movie, i do agree that killing off the main characters was a ridiculous mistake. The Tf franchise as a whole went downhill from then on. It's like killing off Jack Bauer from the show '24', or Jennifer Garner character from 'Alias' and expect people to keep watching.

Not only that, Also the controversy surrounding one of the episodes in the shows third season after that movie, Cause Casey Kaysem to quite the show causing Cliffjumper to never be heard from again.

I don't think they should've killed everyone off either but some of those new characters became fan favourites, and if you think toy politics hasn't effected the designs in this movie you're living in cloud cuckoo land. Notice how even simple colour scheme decisions were screwed up to distinguish them from the originals.
Infact I'm amazed Brawl will be a double turreted green tank.

If you want to ***** about the movie so much watch the japanese episodes of old school transformers. The japanese transformers line never saw the movie so everyone that died in the movie was still in the show. I liked that some of the guys died, but if they could bring Prime back then they could of brought some of the old ones back. I would of liked to see Prowl and Iron Hide get fixed by the quintison. Btw I still liked the movie.

...wow. That was an interesting post.
oooo Optimus died. oooooooo
oh whatever happened to artistic integrity and showing a good story. Prime dying and the autobots having to function without him:(
meh people died. It was a story. It's toys. Granted Rodimus does suck.

While it does suck that most of the awesome characters died (hey they left the Dinobots alone so I was happy) they had no choice. They wanted to introduce a new line of toys and you ain't doing that with Prime and the lads still running about. Not a good justification I know but hey thats toys for you :)

They brought back Optimus Prime in 3 episodes and he was brought back to life in full form in the last two. However, After that show ended, Another one came out after it called Transformers: Headmasters, It took place after the series and featured Spike and his son Daniel as the only human characters. That series had Optimus Prime on it, However in one episode, He was killed off. Unfortunately, This series was never released in the US and was only available in Japan.

If they didnt kill off any characters they would be sacrificing the story. Obviously the makers felt it was time for a change so they killed some characters off, any good writer has to be willing to kill off characters(even main or fan favs) if the story comes to that point.

And with an awsome intro guitar solo in the main theme of course it's a good movie. (And they used a Wierd Al song in it. "Dare to be Stupid."
The best part of the movie, for me, was the space suits that Sam and his dad had. Those were awsome. Galvatron being voiced by Leanord Nemoy was also very cool. Soundwave was in the movie the whole time right?

i loved that movie when it came out in the cinemas.
i remember being absolutley gutted when prime died.
i wasnt expecting it. same with ironhide, brawn etc..very emotional.
i agree the movie falters a bit once they retreat from earth. but still that opening 30mins were just awesome!
soundwave vs blaster!
constructicons vs dinobots!
the arrival of galvatron!
some great moments.
the season after that didnt grab me like the previous either. the quintessons story was pretty cool but it became a show in new toylines. some hit and some miss.

One thing that I thought was strange is that they always blasted each other in the show...yet no one died. Then in the movie when they get blasted they die. I also hated that Optimus died and Megatron really didn't...it always seemed to me that even if Megatron hadn't become Galvatron he still would have survived since he told Starscream before he threw him out of Astrotrain "I still function". That being said I still loved the movie, and can't wait for the Special Edition DVD.

I didn't like this movie either. this new one looks to be a little better but really the designs of the robots and vehicles are rather disheartening for me personally. I'll see it but golly I didn't expect them to go out of that far and changing them into bionicle toys etc.
nosebleed.
08-23-2006, 01:11 AM
I remember seeing it in 1986 and it was pretty shocking to see so many autobots get killed. And my fave, Wheeljack, didn't even have an onscreen death...nice tribute. Prime dying really messed me up but I accepted the new bots with no problem. Sure Rodimus was weaksauce compared to Optimus but it was a movie aimed towards kids and everyone knows that kids are more ready to accept new things than their set-in-their-ways parents.
I guess my reaction to the movie would be the same also if I had just watched it for the first time again in 20 years. But I've watched the move more or less regularly over the years and it is now part of my DNA structure.

Oh no no no no no. Optimus Prime was never killed of at al in the Headmasters saga, which I own two versions of, a Canadian release in movie form and the original episodes shown on T.V. Maybe you're thinking of the Japanese Headmasters series?

I didn't have a problem with killing off some of the original characters to make way for the newbies (at that time).
But they shouldn't have killed off Prime and made Megatron into Galvatron.
That sucked bigtime.
Kill anyone else off, but keep the two leaders the same -- they were the driving force of the Transformers in the first place.

I like change. I like it when they kill characters off.
But the way they did it (thanks to upper management, not the writers) in the movie was horrible and just plain LAME. You don't kill off all the main characters in one movie....you need to do it over time and slowly.
They may as well as just had all the main originals in one single ship and just blew it up at the beginning of the movie. :)

I think they should have just upgraded Megatron and Primes bodies a bit. Have Prime look the way he did as a Power Master or Head Master, instead of killing him. Same with Megatron.

Well when the movie came out , i was living in the U.K and it saids something to the effect of:
"The galactic battles of the Transformers will continue.....and Optimus Prime will return".
Also at the beginning of the film, instead of getting the opening credits where you see the voice actors names, like Judd Nelson and co, i saw a Star Wars-like opening crawl, that said something to the effect of:
"An evil planet has entered tthe universe, unicron".Then goes on to say "The Decepticons have chased the Autobots, from Cybertron to Earth, and back again."
I really thought it was cool. Now i live in the U.S and both those aspects are missing from the dvd.
All you U.K Hypster, could you gimme the actual words? It's been so long, i'm just reciting off the top of my head from memory. It would also be cool if they included these in the U.S version scheduled for release this coming November.

Hmm...weird. My brother did buy it for me a while back. The opening crawl takes away from the "cinema-like" effect for me, and the Optimus hint at the end just makes all the drama go away. Kind of like if you have never read Lord of the Rings and at the end of Fellowship of the Ring it had a voiceover that stated, "And Gandalf SHALL return!".

TRANSFORM AND ROLL OUT!! SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT UNVEILS LENTICULAR COVER FOR TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION DVD
Fan Favorite Artist Don Figueroa Crafts Special Collectible "Transforming" Cover New York, New York, September 5, 2006 *SONY BMG Music Entertainment today revealed the collectible, limited-edition lenticular cover for the TRANSFORMERS: The Movie 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD on the DVD's official Web site. Being released on November 7, 2006, this one-of-a-kind two-disc set has already become one of the most anticipated DVDs of the year.
SONY BMG revealed the first "transforming" image at Comic-Con 2006. When displayed, fans saw for the first time Optimus Prime appropriately situated in a position of prominence. Joining the Autobot leader are Megatron, Bumblebee, Starscream, Blaster and more of the most popular TRANSFORMERS characters. In August, SONY BMG released the second of two Figueroa images. In this piece, Hot Rod * as he transforms into Rodimus Prime * is grasping the Matrix of Leadership as it lights the Autobots' darkest hour. Above, Unicron begins to destruct, while Galvatron, Arcee and Springer look on. Since the publication of the two cover images, fans have been speculating about the collectible cover. Beginning today, SONY BMG is providing fans a preview of the lenticular cover on the official Web site of the DVD www.TRANSFORMERSthemovieDVD.com. The image will demonstrate the motion effect of the "transforming" images as the viewing angle changes. For the 20th anniversary edition DVD, Sony BMG Home Entertainment completely re-mastered and color-corrected the film and will present Optimus Prime, Megatron and the rest of the star-studded Autobots and Decepticons in true splendor through three distinct versions: 16x9 Widescreen presentation, the Autobot Matrix of Knowledge presentation featuring trivia and fun facts about the movie itself; and a full-screen edition. To further commemorate the 20th anniversary of the film, SONY BMG is providing fans with some extra-celebratory content that lets them track back to the true origins of the TRANSFORMERS.
After careful consideration and preparation, Sony BMG has scoured the archives for the best TRANSFORMERS-related footage available, and the DVD will include the original commercials for the toy line and movie -- allowing viewers to see how and where the phenomenon began. TRANSFORMERS: The Movie features the voice of Orson Welles in his final role, as well as stars Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, John Moschitta, Peter Cullen, and Frank Welker. The DVD also features a winning soundtrack featuring the iconic theme "The TRANSFORMERS" performed by Lion, and the popular "The Touch," performed by Stan Bush.
The movie, set in 2005, chronicles the efforts of the heroic Autobots to defend their home of Cybertron from the evil Decepticons and Unicron, a huge robotic creature that devours planets. For more information and regular updates on TRANSFORMERS: The Movie 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD log onto www.TRANSFORMERSthemovieDVD.com. New information will be posted each Tuesday leading up to the November 7th release as part of SONY BMG's "Transformers Tuesday" campaign.

I always hated Duke in the cartoon. Hawk was the leader of G.I. Joe. Duke was just the field sarge. *steps off comic book geek podium*
Then again the cartoon was an utterly and completely different universe than the comic (in almost every way). It'll be interesting to see fans debate if that movie ever goes into production.

The opening sequence at the Statue of Liberty along with that kick a$$ theme song, is the only reason i watch G.I Joe:The Movie. The movie was cool once i watched it a few times, and it actually got me watching a couple of eps of the series-which were bland compared to it. Before the movie, i had never bothered watching G.I Joe-period.
I heard on the TF dvd coming out that they will be deleted scenes on there. I'm really curious to see those. I hope they're scenes taken from the beginning battle at Autobot City. Maybe we'll actually get to see some major characters actually getting killed? I always wished that battle was longer.

It still blows my mind that they had that "Prime will return" in your version that showed in the theater. Just FYI for people here, I saw this in the theater in 1986 in the US and the Star Wars scrolling wasn't there nor was the "Prime will return" hint at the end. Golgo13 has seen this also in the theater back in the day and remembers both of these elements. Any other people who watched this when it first came out in theaters? What do you remember?

Well that's just silly as Eric Idle is British, so of course they know who he is there.
Anyway I quite like the 1986 Transformers movie but it is far from a masterpiece of a film. It was set 20 years after the cartoon series so not surprising they've killed a lot of the original cast off. It's just a kid's movie, though - it's not aimed at adults so if you're not under 10 and can't understand what's to like about it then that's why.

You know on the Collections edition dvd, Vince Dicola (the guy that did the score for Transformers) said he called Stan Bush (the guy who wrote and sang 'The Touch), and told him him that he heard his song in Boogie Nights. Stan told Vince he never got compensated or credited for the song..
...Vince Dicola is also confused why the score itself was never released, as fans keep asking him for it.

Well, what I read is pretty ambiguous. It doesn't say one way or another the series is a direct sequel of the G1 cartoon at all. If you're referring to the DVD release of the American Headmasters series which bears that name, I don't think that is what Transformers: Heroes will be based upon.

They tried to bring Starscream & Prime back, but it was to late, the ratings were dismal, and the show was cancelled.

the cgi for the movie and for the trailer are different things. they could've been working on the trailer for a long time using predesignated footage and some cg done just for the trailer. i do think it will just be the "anouncement" trailer on the dvd, but a real teaser is not out of the question.

I think it is standard practice now to work the CGI on specific scenes designated for the trailer in advance. I don't think it will be the full three minute trailer that will hit theatres a month before the movie but, I think a 90 second that is a little more than a teaser is not out of the realm of possibility.

I saw the movie at the tender age of 10 and I admit I was shocked at seeing all the '84 Autobots die, but I figured it was a necessity to move the story along and to distance the Transformers from the more kid-friendly rivals the GoBots.
If you watch the interview with writer Flint Dille on the box sets even he admits that in one way it was good doing away with the '84 line because the 3rd season episodes didn't seem so repetitive as the earth bound stories were.

Optimus Prime and all the characters will be in there, they wont look…I hope they don’t look the same because I think those characters wont hold up on motion pictures. I think that’s why that animated movie never worked.

Exactly. I cannot find the particular quote but I do remember reading him saying something like, "Why would anybody want the original voice actors? That's silly/ridiculous". Plus i knew we wouldn't get alot of movie stuff on here. Like i've mentioned time and time again, filming just wrapped-there's no way we could get anything half decent so soon...
I didn't think we'd get any cg clips, I'm mostly interested in Spielberg's commentary.

Hmmm...last time I checked, the animated movie...worked.
The movie didnt do well commercially since too many parents complained that their kids were crying over Optimus Prime.....It's one of the reasons why the G. I. Joe movie went straight to video and Duke survived being stabbed in the heart with a snake....

Guyverjay, I watched those x-men anime intros and they are truely bad ass! Never seen em before but they have cooler action then an entire episode.

I don't know what the quality of TFTM has to do with the quality of Michael Bay's forthcoming cinematic abortion.

So they killed all the original autobots in the film because to wanted to introduce a new toyline? What a travesty. I admit I still loved the movie though. They did manage to develop some great characters like hot rod, kup, arcee, etc. But it kind of serves them right the film failed so miserably.

^. Yeah, but the film, despite it's B.O failure, grew into the epic/classic it is today....
