10k. :meow:
Lizard referred to Nostalgia in his 10k thread a few days ago. As i said there, it's something that's been on my mind lately as well. Hell, I'm getting hitched in 29 days. I'm 32. I listen to Jazz and read books about the origin of the Calculus. I still prefer vinyl to cds. But i still watch JLU and i love it. I still read comics. And i rarely wear a suit. Perhaps others here could tell similar stories.
So Friends, I ask you the following question:
"Are YOU.... a Grup?"
If you don't know what that is, a little story:
I was sitting in a Cafe in Long Island City waiting for my bacon, egg,&cheese on an everything-bagel and i grabbed a copy of New York Magazine off a bench to read. I looked at the cover, looked down at my hooded sweatshirt, my messenger bag, my scruffy indistinguishables. Then i looked across at my friend, his hooded sweatshirt, his messenger bag, his scruffy long hair. And i realized, with some degree of horror, that I...WE...WERE GRUPS.
Here's a link to the NY Mag article (http://nymag.com/news/features/16529/)
Now, for the younger amongst you i shall rephrase my question, lest you be too judgemental:
"IF you are too young to consider yourself now, then Could You Become One?"
Do you carry the telltale signs?
Friends, i contend that for many of us here, on the Hype, Gruppitism is part of who we are. if not now then someday. We may not fit all the criteria, But still...
We meet on a site whose chief goal is to talk about Superheroes.:ninja:
And We love He-Man and Voltron and Will and Holly with all our might.
So, are we Grups, one and all? Has our youth-obsessed culture loosened its vicelike grip on the truly young, and just gotten a bit more "relaxed" wth itself? Have we given the ditch to "putting away childish things" and managed to become Men anyways? Is Youth here to stay? growing ever larger, beating back the stuffiness of the Old Guard?
Friends, I ask you, what does tomorrow hold for us all?

Growing up is overrated. If you loved capes growing up, why should you all of a sudden hate them just because you hit 30? I say love who you love and be who you are and not worry about what other people think of you. :)

Friends, I ask you, what does tomorrow hold for us all?
I've got Peter Pan Syndrome.
I will never not get excited by a new monster movie, I will never stop watching cartoons, my main aspirations are to get drunk and Rock out.
Thank God I'm smart enough to fake adulthood while I'm here at work.
This has always been a problem in the chick department.
I'm like a rogue-ish, Devil-may-care, "So what we gotta work tomorrow, let's drink some wine and stay up all night writing a song together." Rock and Roll Pirate Gypsy dude, and they all love it, a lot.....but after time passes, they eventually want to fulfill their ambitious dreams and start planning for some hoighty-toighty future career and procreate and crap and I'm like, "guh....Why?!? We're here to have as much fun as possible and then die, right?"
Thank god there are so many young girls that really get off on older guys, but this...condition of mine, will start to suck, quite suck ass when, say, my chest hair starts turning white.*shrug*:(

Oh def. I'm only 22 now, so I'm still too young to be considered a grup, but I'm pattern-oriented, so I could see myself functioning in the exact same way when I'm 40.
Congratz on your 10,000th also Maxwell. :)

I think that modern adults (people who grew up in the late 60's and 70's, etc. . . ) are realizing that adulthood doesn't mean completely quitting things that you like. . . even if they're from childhood or youth.
Nothing wrong w/ that imo.

Nah... not really. I just put the sad smilie there for irony.
I'm reading the article... and I have to admit, that I don't even know about 3/4 of the 'cultural' references (music, fashion, etc.).
BTW, I'm thinking I need to cut down on the Hype! even more... because when you referred to loving Will and Holly with all our might... I thought of W-S and Toven. It took a few beats before I realized it was Land of the Lost to which you were referring.

I remember my wife going on about this article a while back. I'm definitely one of those "Grup" thingies, but I always just referred to myself as an immature idiot. I'm 30 now and I don't see myself losing interest in comics, horror movies, cartoons or indie/punk rock any time soon. I'd wear Chucks, jeans and t-shirts for the rest of my life, if I could. Growing up and acting like my parents doesn't really appeal to me. Hell, we're contemplating not even reproducing, so that would allow me to concentrate even more on my chilidsh behavior for the rest of my life, rather than devoting time to some noisy stink-bag. I think people are wising up to the fact that just because adulthood brings on more responsibility, doesn't necessarily mean we have to give up what made us happy in our younger days.
Congrats, Maxie!

I don't look like the women in the article.
Although... I have started wearing clothes from Lucy all the time. And I ditched my actual 'purses' for this great little North Face bag. And I have grown into this sort of 'bed-head' haircut... because people keep telling me they like it.
Uh... maybe I'm just on my way.
