I wanted to address my thoughts about Ledger. In my opinion, I think he will give a good performance with Nolan and crew guiding him. At first I wasn't sure if Ledger would give a sterling performance or fail miserably with the role, but I trust in Nolan and others to give us another superb Bat-film. Plus, Jerry Robinson will be there as a consultant.

Ever since he was created back in 1940, Joker's main and virtually only costume has been the purple suit. It would be criminal to leave it out IMO.

I don't see why it can't be a bit of both. The Joker has his moments of unbridled aggression and the next moment, he's comical in his chaos. Like tom said, I don't know if I'd want him as super-dark, in the mold of John Doe from Seven or anything, but they need to 'get' the parts of him that are scary and unpredictable, while also capturing his lighter fare.

Exactly
That's the best kind of Joker, IMO. He can be very amusing, and even funny, and then be absolutely terrifying too. The Killing Joke is a good example of that.
Remember just after he shot Barbara, he started comparing her to a library book?? I thought that was hilariously twisted.

I liked that they covered all the bases in the Animated series movie Mask of the Phantasm--he was at once really funny and almost lighthearted ("Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running about") to seriously menacing and disturbing (both times before he uses his Joker gas).
Killing Joke was just...man. I wish they made that into a Batman movie. I hoped it would be the plot for this one, but probably not.
Also liked in DKR--he's straight-faced almost the whole time, except for one laugh over a smoke-bomb, and the big one as he's breaking his own neck. Atypical, but weirdly fitting.

Definitely getting Joker's one. He looks great. I hate Damien. Little creep irritates the hell out of me. Robin's face looks kind of fat. Batman looks pretty good. Man Bat looks awesome.
Can't wait to read Morrison's Joker story this month. And Harley is going to be in Detective next month.

Batman's always funny when he goes for the uber-dry comedic style. I wish they'd utilize it more, especially when around Joker (although, seeing as Joker killed J.T., he's probably not going to)

I rarely see Batman use dry humour with Joker. Ever since he crippled Barbara Gordon, anyway. Can't say I blame him. Joker's crossed the line too many times.

There's a funny coincidence. I just re-read Arkham Asylum last night. The art in that is so creepy. Especially Joker's look. It's all in the eyes.
Killing Joke is a classic. Probably his most famous tale. And every time we see Barbara Gordon in that wheelchair, we're reminded of the horrific events that took place in it.
You know, one of his most underrated stories is his outing in the 'No mans Land' saga. He shot the Huntress nearly to death, kidnapped a bunch of babies, and murdered Jim Gordon's wife.
Can't wait 'til next year to see him again. Nolan has my respect. I'm 50/50 on Ledger playing him, but hell - Nolan knows what he is doing.

Great to see another rabid Joker fan on the board. I agree with you on Arkham Asylum; the art is terrifying... but Hell, Joker just terrifies me period. The great art definitely adds to it, though. I'm obsessed with Joker's face, especially his eyes and his mouth... and sometimes his hair. Really scary.
Haha, oh yeah Barbara Gordon... Stripping her naked (not to mention Jim) and taking pictures is always a nice touch. :D I'd say that's my ultimate Joker moment (the paralysation of Barbara), tied with Jason Todd's death. Joker with a friggin' crowbar, could you get any better? Hah.

Our Obsessions
Definitive Joker Origins
Part One of Two
The whereabouts of the Joker had been unknown for some time. Eight months had passed without the Clown Prince of Crime making any sort of appearance; there were no wacky jewel robberies ... no slaughtering of innocents by his hand. This prolonged freedom from his adversary prompted Batman to investigate. Obsessions are fed by our own determination to know every detail of a person, place, or situation. In this case, the Dark Knight had a longing to know what might have befallen the Joker.
Seconds ticked away and added into minutes, which became hours. Hour upon hour, Batman devoted himself to finding the answer. Leads? There were many. Genuine? Very few. Street bosses seemed to know nothing ... "Stop stalkin' me, you creep. I dunno nothin' about where the Joker goes 'n lays his head. 'cept Arkham!" ... But the Joker had 'checked out' of the asylum nearly a year ago.
Dr. B.T. Miller was an Arkham psychiatrist. Miller had whole notebooks filled with conversation manuscripts and various notes on the patients with more severe disorders. Batman narrowed things down, and visited Dr. Miller's office in the dead of night. Flipping through files in the cabinet, he sifted through and scanned dozens of documents to no avail. Batman decided to check the desk drawers (with the assistance of a lock pick) ... and the aforementioned manuscripts were finally discovered, alongside several audio tapes. Swiping them and disappearing from the office, there would be no trace or sign of Batman having been there, come morning: as long as Dr. Miller didn't check the desk drawers.
MILLER: "If I am to give any help in rehabilitation, it is a requirement that I dig deeper into the elements ---"
JOKER: "Of my darkest desires? My subconscious archetypes?"
"...Sure, sure. We don't have mind probes, so..." [chuckles] "... you need to open up, Jack."
"Mmm." [hums]
"Perhaps you wish to speak another time? These appointments are for your benefit. They're not mandatory."
"It's either talk to wooden men in white coats or talk to myself in the cell. Fine. Wish granted."
"... Great. These dark archetypes that you are already familiar with have beginnings. They have places where they were conceived ..."
"And your point?"
"Jack, I can't sit here and play guessing games. You must cooperate, naturally, and dispel ---"
"Origins, right. The problem is, I can't remember in clearness. It's all foggy... foggy crap. How am I to be sure that what I recall, isn't just a creation of my mind to accomodate for a rather bleak life in the slums of Chicago?"
"Chicago...?"
"I seemed to have remembered something!" [shuffling sound of Joker getting up from the couch] "Or... I could be just messing with your mind. I'm an excellent liar. I make up the greatest of tales from the top of my head."
"That's counteractive to rehabilitation."
[footsteps/pacing] "There was a father, and a mother ... their son was a skinny, unhealthy boy. They were managers of a Ringling Brothers circus branch ... Chicago ... exuberant audiences ... happy music."
"Go on, Jack."
"No, no, no. That's a problem. The skinny boy didn't have a name that started with a 'J' ... why's that always assumed? Ah, forget it." [pacing stops]
"Your eyes were inclined toward the right, as were your hand gestures. That signifies using the left side of your brain. Lies are concocted on the right side. You believe that what you were saying is factual."
"I'm told all the time about my psychosis! [sits down heavily on the couch, feet slamming hard against the floor] "If I'm so damned sociopathic, you'd believe that I can make my lies as believable as ... facts themselves!"
"Stay calm. You have been so civilized in this session. Please don't waste that."
[mumbles an insult] "The father lost all personal savings in a game ... a poker variant known as Guts. The daddy just loved gambling. It was paramount to sexual gratification itself. Then the mother blamed the father's gambling for making the family revert to such a life of poverty ... HAH! ... it's always the man's fault, eh?"
"Hmm."
"Then the mother screwed the neighbor, which resulted in the father throwing the mother from the house ... and then there were drunk times ... which meant the skinny son had to flee the scene. The rats in the Chicago slums were his new guardians, doctor." [sighs dramatically] "Hurting the animals back at the circus was always a thrill. It made the boy's blood run faster. What was he to use as an outlet when living on the streets?"
[pause]
MILLER: "Jack?"
JOKER: "What?"
[pause]
"That sadism was upgraded. You ... I mean, the boy ... grew into hurting other human beings. Correct?"
"Thanks for stating the freakishly obvious. YES, the boy became a man, and YES, that man got off on hurting others. That man couldn't help it. He couldn't alter the cards that Fate dealt him!!" [a chuckle] "I was handed... of all cards in the deck ... The Joker."
"The main archetype is that exact image. The image of that card."
"Again, you state the obvious. Where would Arkham be without simpletons such as you?"
"Enough with the verbal insults, Jack."
"Be lucky my medication is keeping me tame. You should be grateful that the attacks are only verbal."
"Hmm. Continue on with your story."
[pause] "The crew I eventually associated with, transferred operations to Gotham. To this bucket of guano."
"And that is where your criminal life really took off?"
"Don't interrupt! ... As a misunderstood man labeled as a criminal, I managed to find quite a few Gothamites who were willing to follow wherever I went. Most were seasoned men straight outta prison! But my favorite were the asocial females. Those cute college girls adored uncontrollable men. I found one who'd live with me. Yes, there was a steamy relationship. Passionate sex. True romance. And ..."
[yet another pause]
MILLER: "And what?"
JOKER: "And I'm done talking to you."
Batman switched off the small tape player. Two hours remained until dawn. ----- There was little to believe about the Joker's confessions to Dr. Miller. Was it even worth a look into records? If research was done on the matter, Batman would have to look beyond Gotham City. He would have to include Chicago. "I don't think so." Batman confirmed to himself. "The Joker has been laying low and plotting. Whatever the plan is, it needs to be stopped before it happens."

I always thought it would be cool if the Joker used one of Batman's tools, like the batgrapple, changed it so it would be more like a "Joker-Grapple" and shoot it through someone. Not saying I want that to happen with Rachel, but to somebody.
i reckon the Joker should use his Lethal bang flag gun to give Bats False hope... e.g.
Joker: using a gun's not really my style but well needs must and all that hehehehe *clicks gun as Bat's watches on in horror, BANG! flag pops out* Relax Kiddies i was just kidding *clicks gun again, bang flag shoots out and embeds itself in Rachels heart* Whoops dopey me, *sick evil smile* No i wasn't *manical laughter*

I liked the episode as a whole, and it's probably one of my favorites. What do you mean by regular style animation? And yeah, Joker's design definately changed for the worse in that season. He looked better in almost any other design (excluding The Batman.)

The comic is better than the episode, IMO. You got to read the character's thoughts, got a bigger background into Harley's past, like how she climbed her way to medical school by screwing her teachers lol.
Just little things that they left out in the episode. Like when Joker is returned to Arkham by Batman, all battered and bloody. Harley runs down and hugs him, all teary eyed, and then gives Batman the most hateful look. He's actually shocked by it.
The episode was a good adaption, but the comic had more.

Yeah, I'm glad they went with the ROTJ version for Justice League.
I liked the comic--haven't seen the episode. It's hard for me to watch the newer Batman eps., because of the overly streamlined look to the characters.
The older episodes were just classic. "You killed Captain Clown....You KILLED Captain CLOWN!!" :)

F*** "The Batman" for making The Joker a shoeless red eyed albino raza member.
TAS Joker was great, MOTP Mr. J was badass
Arkham Asylum Joker was as creepy as it gets, it was like a nightmare for Batman
The Killing Joke Joker is the epitome of comic book lore
Jack Nicholson did an awesome job, I don't care what anyone says

The Batman's version of most of the characters is crap.
And Jack Nicholson was awesome as the Joker. He had all Joker's nuances down pat. His short temper, his unpredictable nature, his insane sense of humour, his wit, his charm.
Jack had it all. Heath has some big shoes to fill, I think.

Hmmm.....I'm a little sketchy.
The red smear doesn't really resemble a smile--but this is an extreme angle and we have yet to SEE Heath smile as Joker. I'm neither for or against a fixed grin, which I assume the scarring represents, but Jack Nicholson conveyed a rather wide range of emotions with it--perhaps Heath will be as bold. Also, there's no wardrobe pictured here, which I find to be a substantial part of the Joker's image.
This isn't a picture that really represents any amount of humor in the Joker, as you could easily see in any B89 still. If they're going for flat-out eerie, fine, but hopefully this Joker will have a little comedy to him. Even in ROTJ, his creepiest appearance yet, the Joker had quips and was funny (in an extremely sadistic sort of way.).
I guess the final analysis depends on his performance.

I think he'll look alot better when we see him smile, with the green hair and purple suit. This is the Joker, after all. The greatest comic book villain of all time.
He deserves the proper treatment.

Mark Hamill's, if only because it covers all the bases. Caesar Romero and Jack Nicholson are both immensely entertaining to watch, but only Mark provides the wide spectrum of evil and sinister to light and funny. I like them all, but when you say "Joker," I hear Mark's voice every time.
"I'll start with how I peeled back the layers of the boy's mind..." Nobody else has even come close to that kind of menace. Looks like Heath's going to make an enthusiastic attempt, though.

I agree, Mark's voice seemed perfect for the Joker. The wide change in emotion that his voice provided was great. I think his best work as the Joker would probably be ROTJ, he was really evil in that.

Kind of ironic, as they did the same thing with Ivy and Joker in "Harley & Ivy." I guess Ivy is immune to raucous laughter...somehow...
Anyway, have you guys seen some of the script excerpts for TDK? There's this one scene where (I'm assuming, because they've disguised the names) Gordon comes in on a fellow officer.
The officer says that somebody took all of the uniforms, cleaned them out. Gordon asks Officer if he remembers anything about the perp. The officer says something to the effect of: "Just his smile."
:wow: Holy moley, this is gonna be good. They seem to be concentrating on building a "presence" for our characters, and it might even rival B89. Too soon to be sure, of course, but... I'm excited. And I never get excited.

"What's the matter, Batman? No witty comeback? No threat? Then I'll provide the narration. I'll begin with how I peeled back the layers of the boy's mind. Though he bravely tried to fight it at first. You would've been proud to see him so strong. But all too soon the serums and the shocks took their toll, and the dear lad began to share such secrets with me. Secrets that are mine alone to know, Bruce. It's true, Batsy. I know everything. And kinda like the kid who peaks at his Christmas presents, I must admit it's sadly anti-climactic. Behind all the stern and batarangs, you're just a little boy in a play-suit crying for mommy and daddy. It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic. Ah what the heck I'll laugh anyway!"
i love that line, but the one after it is even better "if you don't like the movie I've got slides". That was one of the lines that Joker comes out with where you don't know what to do Laugh or Cry.

The Joker isn't the villain in the latest issue of Detective Comics. It's a magician called Ivor Loxias.
However, I HIGHLY recommend you check out the issue. Buy it, and DO NOT skip to the end. You do not want to give the end away for yourself. An excellent comic, and the ending is a killer!

Another great thread Ock. I was looking through Ock's Lair before and couldn't believe the amount of stuff I found out about you . . . erm, you know what I mean.
Seems you have great taste in villains. Sorry to say it, but Joker is my favourite villain out of all comics, DC and Marvel (no hard feelings ;)). It's the psychology of him that I love. I know most villains have a certain amount of psychological background in print, but I just love the way that Joker's sanity is his main ploy.
I've been happy with most of the Joker portrayals -- Mark Hammill, Jack Nicholson; I don't like Joker in The Batman. As for Heath Ledger, I have a very good feeling about him as The Joker -- I mean, come on, he's gotta be striving to be a serious actor if he's excepting roles as gay cowboys, it's not something that your run-of-the-mill actor would do. Also, from what I've seen, he seems to be a genuinely good actor.

Joker is my all time fav, too. When I first joined here, The Joker name was already taken. So, I went with my second all time fav villain, Doc Ock. He's just a notch below Joker for me.
Honestly, there is no disputing that the Joker is the best of the best. There's never been a villain like him. He's been going strong since 1940, and his popularity has yet to fade.
He's been featured in some of the most memorable and iconic stories in comic book history, been reincarnated on screen in many different versions, both in cartoon, and played by a variety of real actors.
It's the psychology of him that I love. I know most villains have a certain amount of psychological background in print, but I just love the way that Joker's sanity is his main ploy.

I know what you're saying. He had it down perfect. It is the best representation outside of the comics we've ever had the luck to see, but that is the main reason why we are both in agreement over this: we will only believe otherwise after witnessing a better version.
So going against my feelings, I will say that one day we will see a better version, a version that shows different sides of his character, sides that may have been seen before but in different quantities.

Nicholson's Joker was an amalgamation of the Golden Age and Silver Age; one was a serious crime boss, whereas the successor was simply a twisted prankster. JN was remarkable in the role. He was respectful to the villain as seen in the comics, while adding his own spin.
While I like Heath Ledger as an actor, and understand where he's coming from in TDK, I still think the comment he made about his performance as Joker along the lines of "the Joker as he was meant to be in the comics, more sinister" was silly. Jack Nicholson was VERY sinister in Batman (1989). Somehow that wasn't lucid enough for Heath.

That pic makes me feel good.
For starters, it doesn't even look like Ledger (unless it's a stunt double), so that means that Ledger is really getting "lost" in this role. That is to say that we won't be able to recognize him in the movie.
I hope we're looking at the screen and thinking, "That's the Joker" instead of "That's Heath Ledger as the Joker." The problem I had with Jack is that I kept thinking "This is Jack Nicholson as the Joker", instead of "This is the Joker." An actor who takes on this role has a serious responsibility of selling it, and if I'm not sold, it's not Joker to me. I want to see a living, breathing, human form of the comic character brought to life on screen.
I dare say that an actor taking on the Joker might be as difficult as playing Hamlet... it might be the most arduous role to play in the history of Hollywood. What other character has such twisted psychology, a distinctive visual appearance, and over-the-top dialogue delivery? I'd say the closest we've had recently was Depp as Jack Sparrow (though there wasn't any psychology there). This is why I think Joker is one of a kind in the Hollywood world... maybe the best, and most difficult.
Why else haven't we seen Joker - a very popular character, and the best villain in all of comics - in a movie since 1989, almost 20 years ago? I'd say it's because it's too damn difficult.
Nolan and Ledger, when you combine them... you got one HUGE set of balls... because not only are they taking on a towering figure in the comic and movie world, but they're changing him DRASTICALLY. They're taking it in a new direction, promising that we're not seeing Jack again, that this is going to be something we've never seen before. Hell, he looks very different than the comics, and he still "feels" like Joker.
And I'm just gonna throw this out there now: His voice in that 40 second trailer sold me instantly... and I didn't even SEE that sum*****.
- It doesn't sound like Heath AT ALL.
- It's exactly how the Joker sounds in my head.
- "Starting tonight, people will die. I'm a man of my word.".... TOTALLY distancing himself from '89, and letting us know that this is "Killing Joke" type.
They're taking a very big risk... but it's gonna pay off big time. This might be one of the great performances in cinema history. I'm not even joking. History in the making.

It's been quite good so far. I still prefer the Killing Joke as Joker's backstory, but this has been a good one, too.
It's funny, DC started off advertising this as Joker's official origin. But, that recent issue of 52 with Bolland's two page Joker spread about his origin proves it's not so official after all.

I love the sorta off-kilter look. Everything, from the funky socks to the overall choice of wardrobe; even the posture is just great. I'd prefer if he were sporting a full-on evil and psychotic grin, but the vibe of someone who is disturbed and unpredictable is definitely there.
...but, oh God, his hands ...the makeup. :down
I don't care if that's what's being served up or not, that eliminates (or at least, significantly takes away from) a particular aspect of the character that I've long enjoyed. It's akin to demystifying him a bit. I didn't like the idea of makeup when it was rumored, I don't like it now that's become apparent that it's a reality and I'm not going to like it when the movie premieres. From the viral, it appears that the characterization will be incredible, but unless we've been setup for some improbable twist, the visage will always be flawed. :joker:

Personally, I find Ledger's expression to be downright creepy as hell, in that picture. He actually looks like he'd be willing to kill everyone in that police station. And believe me, with a character like The Joker, that's a good thing.

"What's the matter, Batman? No witty comeback? No threat? Then I'll provide the narration. I'll begin with how I affected young Robin's makeover. Oh, he bravely tried to fight it at first. You'd have been proud to see him so strong. But all too soon the dear lad began to share such secrets with me. Secrets that are mine alone to know.....Bruce. It's true, Batsy. I know everything. I'm kind of like the kid who peeks at his christmas presents, I must admit it's somewhat anti-climatic. Behind all the stern and batarangs, you're just a little boy in a playsuit crying for mummy and daddy. It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic"

Yeeeah, he has. Everyone does! I love, that for the Arkham Asylum story have taken the citation from my favorite book.
I did not see that movie. I did not see any cartoon films *sigh* I know, that was excellent. I can estimate it only under reviews. And I heard Mark's laughter. It is his role! He is the Joker!
I have Mask of the Phantasm comic, too.
And I want to tell to you about the Dark Knight
Ledger has an awesome and original make-up. But he is just other actor in a role of the Joker.
He never will take that success which other actor in a role of other my favorite villain has taken (sorry, dude, I really think so. Maybe, it’ll change later).

I think that even in it's uncut version it's fantastic. I was/am a big fan of the Batman Beyond series. A great addition to the Batman mythos with references to B:TAS galore. And Return of the Joker was the perfect conclusion. Joker's comeback was...in one word...glorious. And at times bone chilling. The speech you mentioned for instance, is one of the ultimate Joker moments from any medium; movies, series, cartoons and comics.

From what I remember, Joker dies in a different way. I think the more common version has The Joker slipping and getting electrocuted (pretty hilarious death LOL!), but the uncut one has:
Terry shooting The Joker.
:yay:
The Joker

Oh yes, I remember seeing that on YouTube. It's the part where Joker is telling Tim to shoot Batman, and instead he shoots Joker. With a spear gun, too.
Joker goes flying back against the wall, blood coming from his mouth, and he says something like "That's not funny", and then he drops dead.

More than you ever wanted to know about the edit version of Return of the Joker:
The opening fight sequence is trimmed, cutting out a second Dee-Dee kick and completely redoing the entire Batman/Dee-Dee sequence.
Lots of white flashes have been added to the action sequences where there were previously none. Additionally, combinations of punches have been mostly trimmed down to one punch. For example, Woof slashes the guard once now instead of twice. Batman no longer punches Ghoul in the gut; he just uppercuts him into the dish. Later on in the club, Terry's attack on Ghoul is cut to a flash and Terry running away while Ghoul falls. There is a 360-degree fight sequence in the opening battle that has also been removed, where Batman fends off the Jokerz one by one.
When Bruce throws the Batarang, it appears as though he's simply pleased that he can still throw and catch the weapon, instead of using it to decapitate a Two-Face dummy.
Seat belts are added to Terry and Bruce as they drive home after their first meeting with the new Joker as well as in the chase scenes in the Batmobile.
Bonk is not shot with Joker's flag-spear gun, but instead given a dose of Joker laughing gas, taking his implied death off-screen. Because of this, a: the whole "Take the trash outside, Dee-Dee" and "Are you with me?" sequence is cut, b: the flag remained on the gun, c: when Joker said "Oops. No, I wasn't," green smoke is visible, d: Jokerz staring was replaced with Bonk's deranged laughter, e: when Joker says, "That's also how we did it in my day," Bonk and the edge of the table he was lying on were added, f: the sound of the second trigger pull went from a flying rocket to a gas release mechanism activation, and g: laughter was in the background until Joker says, "New Gotham, new rules, even a new Batman."
The club fight is changed. Chucko no longer punches Terry and says "I don't know why the boss wants a dreg like you outta the way, but hey, as long as it's fun..." He just goes for his gun and says "Slag him!"
When Terry enters the Batcave to find it demolished by the Joker, the letters 'HA! HA!' written across the floor are changed from red to purple, probably to assure the viewer it is written in spray paint rather than Bruce's blood.
During a montage where Batman and Batgirl comb the underworld looking for clues about Robin's disappearance, Batgirl talks to a nicely-dressed man and woman instead of two scantily clad women, clearly intended to be prostitutes, on a street corner. These two women appeared in The New Batman Adventures as Batgirl's "sources," in the episode "The Ultimate Thrill." The blonde is based on an early Black Canary character design later seen in Justice League Unlimited
In the unedited version, when Batman (in the flashback) frees himself from the Joker's ribbon wrap, he throws the knife that he used to free himself with at the Joker. The Joker ducks at the last second and the blade goes through the stage curtain.
Two of the Joker's lines are changed. One line, "I'll begin with how I peeled back the layers of the boy's mind" is changed to, "I'll begin with how I affected young Robin's makeover." In another, the words "the serums and the shocks took their toll," are cut out.
More than half of the "Our Family Memories" home movie is cut out, only showing Robin tied up and struggling, and cutting the scene where the Joker opens the barbecue lids, picks up the voltage tongs, and shocks Robin.
All other blood is removed. Only one example was passed over: in the flashback sequence when the original Batman smashes through the projection, he punches the Joker. Blots of blood fly from the Joker's mouth, but he is not bleeding in the next shot.
The Joker no longer slices Batman across the chest or in the leg (originally intended to explain why Bruce walks with a limp in Batman Beyond); he just punches Batman. However, if one looks closely at the Joker's hand, the knife handle is still visible in the edited version.
The Joker originally wanted Robin to shoot Batman with a gun, saying, "Make Daddy proud." The edited version shows that the Joker wants Robin to "Make him one of us" by shooting him with a gun designed to make Batman similar to the Joker and Robin. The Joker's line, "The last sound you'll hear will be our laughter," is kept in. Also, the gun is tossed away in the fight with the Joker. When Robin drops down to cry, the gun is right next to him. When Batgirl comes to comfort him, the gun is gone.
The Joker is not shot, but slips in some water and is electrocuted off screen. The dialogue in the subsequent scene is changed, with no mention of the Joker being buried under Arkham Asylum.
A lot of dialogue is changed as well; references to the word "kill" are changed.
The Joker's dialogue of asking Terry if he had "any last words for the Bat-Fart" now changed to "any last words for the old Bat-Kook".
Terry's dialogue is altered from "I'm assuming his girlfriend bought it, too" to "And since you saw Harley fall into the pit..."
Barbara's dialogue is once more altered from "..she was able to help Tim back to sanity" to "...she was able to help Tim back to himself."
Jordan Price's dialogue is changed from "...bunglers tried to kill Wayne" to "...bunglers tried to ice Wayne."
Bruce says "Robin defeated him" instead of "Robin did shoot him."
After Bonk tells the Joker, "I think you're a fake!", the Joker comes back by saying "Ah, brave new world, that has such putzes in it." It has been changed to "brave new world, that has such yutzes in it."
Right before Tim Drake turns into the Joker, he says "It's a killer." It's altered to "It's a doozy."
As Tim Drake is recounting past events of the Joker's death, his dialogue was altered from "Oh God. I killed him. I didn't mean to. I tried so hard to forget...but I still hear the shot, still see his dead smile." to "Oh God. I did it. I didn't mean to. I tried so hard to forget...but I can still hear his scream. I can still see his frozen smile."
In the scene where the satellite laser chases the Batmobile, it blasts an unmarked, dark, seemingly empty building. Originally, it was a lit movie theater. In the edited version, the word "cineplex" can be seen exploding out of the wreckage in the last few frames of the shot.
The introduction to the scene on the Wayne Enterprises yacht between Jordan Price and his female friend is excised.
When Ace watches part of a Looney Tunes episode on the TV (Hare Ribbin') where a dog thinks he killed Bugs Bunny, the dog on TV says "I don't deserve to live!" over and over instead of moving on to saying "I wish I were dead!" twice.

I've watched that clip so many times today. I love the part where Batman breaks free, tosses the knife and Joker just eggs him on. He takes off in a remote controlled gurney for crying out loud. It's glorious. :joker:
Regarding Harley, does anyone think she's evil, or just totally misguided by her love for Joker? I mean she's done some pretty twisted things with a smile on her face for him.I'd lean toward the latter. Harley's actions are motivated by her dependent personality. If Joker didn't care about slaughtering people or creating chaos, I doubt she would go about on her own. Her own insanity, combined with her affinity toward our dear Mr. J, leads her to be complicit in these acts. She's not exactly a 'good' person, but she's been so manipulated and controlled that I think she just tries to make the best of it, while still pursuing Joker. In the middle of her fight with Batgirl in ROTJ, she remarks "So he roughed the kid up a bit, but I'll make it right". She's usually pegged with that kinda of remorseful attitude, while still going about wreaking havoc. Interesting dynamic.

I've watched that clip so many times today. I love the part where Batman breaks free, tosses the knife and Joker just eggs him on. He takes off in a remote controlled gurney for crying out loud. It's glorious. :joker:
I love when Joker tries to provoke Batman into crossing the line. Because he knows he'll never do it.
Batman: "I'll break you in two"
Joker: "Oh Batman, if you had the guts for that kind of fun you would have done it years ago"
I'd lean toward the latter.
Well said! And, I agree.
Actually, reading her issues in Detective Comics by Dini from the past year or so, you see her genuinely trying to lead a normal life, despite several temptations to turn back to crime. My favourite one was when that new woman Ventriloquist and Scarface tried to recruit her.

This has got to be my favorite Joker quote...
"You had a bad day once, am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed. Why else would you dress up ike a flying rat? You had a bad day, and it drove you as crazy as everybody else... only you won't admit it! You have to keep pretending that life makes sense, that there's some point to all this struggling!
God, you make me want to puke."

It's a wonderful insight into Joker's psychology and train of thought. He just let go of everything, and gave into the madness. The dark side. And, he LOVES it.
He's so far gone that he cannot remember anything else. It's all he knows. One of the reason why he can't exactly remember who he used to be, I imagine.
haha, I made that video a few days ago as a request :p
Well done! I love it. 'Mad World' is just so suitable for Joker.
what the Joker would have to say about “friendship” that Harley and Ivy share.
As far as I know, he doesn't seem to care. When it first happened in the animated series, the only thing he was interested in was taking their loot.
He knows Harley will always come running back to him.

Well I purchased two Batman Graphic Novels, the first one was Batman: The Greatest Stories ever told. The book was excellent, but I think the Jokers Five-Way revenge stood out the most. LOL, an exploding cigar laced with nitroglycerin. And I also picked up Arkham Asylum, i've got to say that that was a genuinely creepy read. The art was also haunting, as well.
I find Joker to be very interesting, can anyone suggest some Joker related stories?

Well I suppose the obvious recommendation would be The Killing Joke, which is out of print as far as I know but will be reprinted sometime this year in a anniversary hardcover. Besides that there's The Man Who Laughs which is being put into hardcover at the end of January and tells the story of the first appearance of the Joker, written by Ed Brubaker (Daredevil, Captain America). Finally, I would say The Greatest Joker stories ever told, which I haven't read but sounds like it'd be good. As long as it's not the same as the Batman: Greatest Stories ever told, which I also have yet to read.

I echo what Kraven said. Reprints of The Man Who Laughs and The Killing Joke will be available in hardcover, on January 30 and March 19 respectively. Both are great reads.
If you're interested in seeing a bit of the character's progression, I too recommend The Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told. It collects about 20 or so stories between 1941 to 1980.
Also, with TDK coming up, there's more Joker goodness being re-released throughout the year. I just recently saw pre-orders at Amazon for Last Laugh and Going Sane, two stories that aren't as mentioned as TKJ and TMWL, but still good stuff.

Have any of you guys ever read Joker: Devil's Advocate? It's an underrated gem. Joker is framed for a mass murder spree using poisoned comedian stamps laced with his Joker toxin.
He's convicted and sentenced to death in the chair. Only Batman believes he's innocent, and fights to prove it before he's executed, much to the dismay of the likes of Jim Gordon, Robin etc.
It's a fantastic story. Seeing Joker with a shaved head is worth the price of it alone. It's written by Chuck Dixon, and the art is by Graham Nolan and Scott Hanna.
I'll post some scans if anyone is interested.

We need to support the hell out of The Dark Knight when it's released. As far as I know, it's his final movie.
I'm going to go and see it as much as possible. As morbid as it sounds, his death is probably going to be a huge financial boost for TDK. Everyone will want to go and see his last and probably most famous role.

01-23-2008, 12:00 PM
The movie will get more attention than it would have now, even taking into account that its a summer blockbuster featuring Batman. I've already seen media reports about 'how Ledger's role as the demonic Joker was causing him discomfort and trouble sleeping'. I'm hoping the sensationalist nature of the press doesn't become too distasteful.

I'm so glad that Heath had enough time to finish the TDK. Now people can look at his performance and see what intensity he could bring to a character. As we all know, from the trailer and statements from Nolan & Co., Heath's performance looks like it will be out of this world.
I think the Joker was a perfect character for Heath to play...because you can be incredibly dark, sinister and intense...and then take it one more step. I think this was a character that would allow Heath to put forth his everything and give a heck of a performance.
I was watching TV Guide channel last night, and there was a critic there talking about Heath's performance in the footage that he's seen. He said, naturally, that Heath nailed it perfectly. He even went so far as to say that he wouldn't rule out the possibility of an Oscar nomination. A freakin' Oscar! From a superhero movie!
Rock on, Heath

Same here. I caught myself thinking many times today: The Joker is dead.
He's already made quite an impression on pop culture. When I asked some people if they heard about the death of Heath Ledger, some of them couldn't put a face to the name. But then I'd tell them, "The guy who played the Joker in the new Batman movie. He's dead..." Then they get it.
This is gonna be a heck of a performance on Heath's part and, by the sounds of it, hugely influential.

The only Ledger movies I have seen was The Brothers Grimm. So I can't say I'm really familiar with him as an actor, or have seen many movies he starred in. Other than his casting as the Joker in TDK, a reason for which I was keeping my eye open more for his appearance in movies and upcoming projects. It was obvious that he was gonna become ''big leauge'', huge potential. And now it's gone. He really had a great future coming, with big projects such as TDK and another Gilliam film. A terrible shame. Worst of all is his young age and also the fact he had a two-year old daughter is a heartbreaker. I did a bit of reading on his IMDB profile, and the personal quotes really showed he had a so-called lust for life. Quite the tragedy this is.
Sickening. That place is populated by scum.

The Joker

Excellent. Ok, Since he's been in so many episodes, I'll only do a few at a time. Kick off with some of his early ones.
- Christmas with The Joker: A really fun episode. Totally light hearted. Joker escaping Arkham on a rocket powered Xmas tree. Having Jim Gordon, Bullock, and Summer Gleeson wrapped up with Candy canes as gags, as his "Awful lawful family".
Even Joker's defeat was comedic, slipping on a rollerskate, and Batman catching him by the leg upside down over a vat of hot liquid. Ooooh, and I loved those armed Joker robot sentrys he had in the planeterium. They even laughed and everything.
7/10
- Be a clown: This episode had it's moments, but I can't see Joker tolerating the Mayor's irritating son in his lair. Even entertaining him with magic tricks. Jordan was annoying.
That said, Joker's skit as Jekko the clown at the Mayor's mansion was fantastic. Looooved his line about the stick of dynamite birthday candle:
Fat kid: "What is it?"
Joker: "It's a birthday candle, Einstein. Except this one blows you out. Hahahahaha"
The showdown with Batman in the amusement park was good. Especially on the rollercoaster with the exploding baby dolls. "You win the prize, Batman. Catch the cutie".
Overall, it was an average episode. Joker saved it from being below average or bad. 5.5/10
- Joker's favour: Ah, now here is where Joker really came into his stride, and Hamill was on top of his game with the vocals. Joker terrorizing a poor average man for years, all because he had the nerve to cuss Joker on the freeway. Brilliant. This is the cruel bastard of a Joker we know and love.
Of course, what really makes this episode so memorable is the introduction of Harley Quinn, the Joker's insane, but extremely loveable girlfriend.
Of course, it is never really esablished that Harley and Joker are a couple in this episode, as Harley's popularity had not yet been established, and she was strictly meant to be a one off character. It was a boss/employee relationship here. Cutting Joker's hair, cheering and clapping when he made a speech or a grand entrance, strictly addressing him as boss or Mr J. Never calling him puddin'.
And her little poem to Gordon, right before they gas his testimonial party, was awesome:
"Here's to Gotham's Commissoner G
You lock up the wierdos, the crooks, and the geeks
You're a hero to all the boys in blue
But this time, baby, the jokes on you"
My only complaint about this otherwise terrific episode was Joker showing a little too much fear at Charlie confronting him with that bomb at the end. This is The Joker, the man who is supposedly immune to fear gas, and who laughs at near death experiences.
Still, just a minor complaint. Terrific episode overall.

Thanks, guys. I do love him. I have him on display on a shelf in my bedroom, but I keep bringing him downstairs to the kitchen table, so I can admire him even more :hoboj:
Try to spark a discussion into this ha-hacienda, how about we list all Joker's episodes on the BTAS, and give them a rating out of ten, and a couple of lines as to what we thought of each episode?
Anyone game for this?
So when are you two going to get hitched?

You have told almost all episodes which I saw with the Joker. (veeery love those episodes!) Almost. But still…
The Last Laugh
Episode of action and fun.
Joker does shopping (like in the “Batman” movie by Burton). The Captain Clown. The first occurrence of “gas laughter”. I love when Joker quotes "Casablanca" He is erudite man.
Everyone jokes. Even Alfred: “I’ve drawn your bath, not a funny bone in his entire body”
And excellent music. The first musical theme of the Joker
Hmm… 8/10
The Laughing Fish
Without comments in general. Classic comic. Classic episode. And poor Harley.
Yey! The quote for you:
Carl: Great Scott!
Joker: I’m Irish
But animation could be better. Because

Continuing with my episode grading:
- Joker's Wild: This was a good episode to show just how much Joker values his image, and how big his ego is. Cameron Kaiser, a casino owner, rips off Joker's image for a Joker themed casino. Of course, Joker's not standing for this, and promptly escapes from Arkham and sets out to destroy the casino, which is exactly what Kaiser wants, so he can collect the insurance.
The animation wasn't the best in this episode, but the writing was good. Some great scenes between Joker and Batman, and a hilarious scene between Joker and Ivy in Arkham at the beginning.
And, this episode had the Joker mobile!!!! I was gutted that they never made this into a toy in the BTAS toy line. Would have made a great collector's item.
All in all, a good episode. 7.5/10
- The Laughing Fish: Possibly the best Joker episode of the BTAS, and certainly one of the best episodes of the series. Every Bat-Fan knows about the classic 70's Joker story, the Laughing Fish, where Joker pulls off one of his most insane capers. He makes all the fish in Gotham have his face, so he can than patent the fish and claim profits on their sales.
Of course, when Joker finds out he cannot patent the fish for legal reasons, he starts taking his wrath out on the employees of the Copyright Company.
Unfortunately, Joker could not kill in the cartoon, so instead of dying laughing from his Joker toxin, his victims were saved from laughing to death by Batman and his anti-toxin. Still, it's a wonderful sight to see his victims go into a laughing frenzy, and that Joker smile take shape on their lips. Really creepy.
Harley Quinn makes a return in this episode. And, much like in 'Joker's Favour', it's still very much a business relationship between Joker and Harley. Calling him boss or Mr J. No sign or hint that they are a couple.
Harley is excellent in this episode, being put to good use, like spraying Frances with Joker's poison. Doing a hilarious TV skit with Joker advertising his Joker fish to Gotham:
"They're finny and funny and oh so delic. They're joyful and jolly Joker fish"
I think the best thing about this episode is how it is an amalgam of two classic Joker stories from the 70's. The Joker's five way revenge is also incorporated into the final showdown, which is set in an aquarium, where Batman is forced to surrender to Joker, after he has captured Bullock. Joker then throws them both to a huge hungry shark.
The animation is fantastic. Especially in one scene where we see a dark, brooding Batman in the Batmobile. Amazing part there. The voice talents are all on top of their game.
It rarely gets better than this. 9.5/10

That was a nice figure of the Joker that you had... was that inspired by any particular mini or series or one-s hot? It looks pretty cool. Also I think my favorite episode with the Joker in it would probably have to be Mad Love, just to add to the debate.

My favorite Joker is either Mask of Phantasm or The laughing fish. I got how deadly the Joker is and how insane and if I did a Joker story they would be my two inspirations

Thanks, tom. I believe he's based off Jim Lee's Joker in Hush:

I'll go one better for you, my dear, as far as screenshots go. Check this out: http://www.worldsfinestonline.com/WF/batman/btas/episodes/harlequinade/
Basically, Harlequinade is the first time we see Harley on the side of the good guys. The Joker has stolen an atomic bomb which is powerful enough to nuke all of Gotham. In Batman's desperation, he recruits Harley Quinn from Arkham, as he needs someone who thinks like Joker does in order to find him.
It's a terrific episode. The animation is superb. Voice acting is top notch. And, Harley gets to sing the most delightfully zany musical number you ever heard.

Wow!!! You so are kind. Thanks! *kiss* *kiss* *kiss*!!
That’s the good link. I’ll review that. :woot:
You know, I did not love Harl earlier. I told already, that I don’t love female characters. And the blonde’s stereotype became the reason why I painted my hair.
But, Harley is really cute! She is talented and funny. That song is really taken from any show?
I am still sad that didn’t see that. Joker in sunglasses + atomic bomb = my brain is blown up. BTAS-Joker the best! (TNBA is much worse. The Joker has no red lips? Bah!)
I am mistaken, or Mark has really given the Joker the British accent or something?
P.S. Looove unmasked Harley and her hair. I think also that is good idea do Harley a clinical psychiatrist.
hahah! I work in the penitentiary system, too. *veryhappy*:whatever:

I didn't like TNBA Joker too. It was so cartoony and it didn't help the serious parts of the show. I just read Batman Man who Laughs. First time reading that book. I loved it beacue it's like a mixture of Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns and The Joker's first appearance.
