Title: Resistance: Fall of Man

GENRE: Sci-Fi Horror First Person Shooter

Console: PLAYSTATION 3

Developer: Insomniac Games

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment America *SCEA*

Released on mankind: November 17th 2006

The creators that brought us the smash hits that go down in platformer history with games such as Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet and Clank turn to a leaf that they haven't seen in almost 11 years. First Person Shooters. The year is 2006 and Insomniac is putting their creative little heads together to bring us the frightning and terrifying game titled

"Resistance: Fall of Man"

The year is 1951, however before you get the image of happy Americans excited and cheerful and in the year that in our history books gives it the title "Conformity". Turns out to be dark and depressing.

In Resistance: Fall of Man™, the U.S. and Britain band together in a last-ditch effort to save the last free state in Europe, England. But are they saving it from you might ask? They are saving it from a horrific scourge given the name "Chimera".

According to Webster's dictionary Chimera means three things.

1.A fire-breathing she-monster in Greek mythology having a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail b : an imaginary monster compounded of incongruous parts
2. An illusion or fabrication of the mind; especially : an unrealizable dream <a fancy, a chimera in my brain, troubles me in my prayer -- John Donne>
3. An individual, organ, or part consisting of tissues of diverse genetic constitution

Are any of these definitions able to be tie together the loose ends of mystery on what the Chimera are, for they are a species of unknown origin. However in mere decades, the Chimera is propagating a virus that converts other life forms into more Chimera. The process has been said to be a very long and painful process of conversion. The Virus has overrun all of Russia and all of Europe. Humanity’s hope for survival is slim, and the tide of the battle rests on the shoulders of one U.S. Army Ranger, Sgt. Nathan Hale.

Characters:

Nathan Hale
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/nathanhale.png

Who is Nathan Hale? Nathan Hale is the main character that you will be taking the role of to fight the Chimera.

But who is he?

Hale was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in November 1922. Shortly after his birth, his parents succumbed to lingering complications from the influenza epidemic of 1918. Without nearby relatives, he was declared a ward of the state. After drifting through a series of odd jobs, Hale enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was elected to the Inaugural Ranger Orientation Program.

During a live-fire exercise, he led an unconventional gambit against a mock target, which resulted in the deaths of most of his candidate group as well as several Army observers. Hale himself sustained grievous injuries. The incident was attributed to faulty munitions.
Hale's rehabilitation was conducted at the Army's Higgins Trauma Center in Montana. After dozens of intensive operations and exhaustive physical therapy, he finally returned to active duty.

After-action reports consistently described Hale as fearless in combat, an inventive tactician, and an able squad leader. Commanding officers rewarded him with increasingly higher-risk missions. Despite his successes, Army psychologists expressed concern over what they perceived as Hale's growing death wish.

The U.S. Army deployed in Britain to face the Chimeran threat. No sooner had they landed than thousands of soldiers were incapecitated by the Chimeran virus. Hale was the only victim to recover.

The developers have said that about half way through the game you will be able to understand the Chimeran language, turning grunts and roars into coarse English.

Rachel Parker:

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/rachelparker.png

The daughter of a three-star general, Rachel Parker was restationed too often to ever know what a home was. The lifestyle was too much for her mother to bear; she left when Parker was six.

Parker became inseperable from her father. Despite her desire to join him in the military, he steered her instead toward a university education. Her eagerness to impress him led her all the way to the theoretical physics department at Oxford.

Before Parker could graduate, her father offered her the job she always wanted with British Army Intelligence. The Chimeran threat was just becoming known in British Intelligence circles and he needed someone he could trust to be a liaison for the military.

Parker and her father worked closely together at British Central Command until the Chimera invaded England and attacked the base. Parker's father died helping her escape.

She has continued to serve on the front lines in the war against the Chimera. Her brilliance at collecting and interpreting strategic intelligence is the only weapon that hasn't failed against them.

Parker has long since become accustomed to losing everything she's ever cared for. Still, she feels it might be different with Hale. She wants to believe the war against the Chimera can still be won. She finds herself willing to support long shots, even if they are American.

THE CHIMERA

HYBRID:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/chimerahybrid.jpg

The Hybrids are the storm troopers of the Chimera. They are the standard fighting force and seem to be the grunts. They have many weapons at their disposal and seem to be very accurate and accustomed to using the weapon known as the "Bulls-Eye".

They have glowing orange/yellow tubes that are sticking out of their backs. The purpose of these packs are unknown however there are countless of theories.

1. They are believed to have a essenstial gas that supports Chimeran life. People who have played the game say that once they shot the tubes they would flail about vilolently hissing and after a while the Chimera would die.

2. *My theory* They are a food source/protein for these creatures that keeps the virus controlled so it does not harm the human being, maybe eating away at them. The virus takes over the human and converts them to have these unatural characteristics on the human-being making them taller and more muscular. The human may sustain vital injuries to their skelatal system so bad that walking and running may result in not being a second nature. The tubes may keep the virus controlled so it does not harm the human being, maybe eating away at them.

ADVANCED HYBRID:

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/techgrunt0gt.jpg

"You will hate to fight these guys." PSM

The reason for this is because these creatures seem to possess a more keen intellegent status than the normal hybrid. They use heavier artillery such as the weapon known as "The Auger". Do to their complextion and being very muscualr it seems from videos that you will be wasting a lot of bullets trying to penetrate through their thick skin.

GREY JACK

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/lanky3jv.jpg

These frightning creatures are known as the Grey Jacks. Despite their lanky apperance and skinny arms do not underestimate them. These creatures are very strong, they are able to rip a human being in-half bathing in the blood of their victim, twist their spine to the point where it snaps, or being able to pick up the human lift him heigh off the ground to meet it face to face, and then choking them to the point where their neck collapses under pressure.

They seem to have a life pack that could do one of the following listed under the Hybrid however it seems to be covered over by a layer of skin making it less visible and needing more of an accurate shot to break it. They appear in an underground level called "Nothern Command" where about eight of these creatures break out of tall tubes that seem to of been holding them in a cryo-genic state.

More Coming Soon.

LEAPER

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/critter6to.jpg

Enter the Leaper, these creatures are small scorpion like humans, if you look closley you can see the front and hind legs of the human. They are very small and explode when shot into a bloody mess with body parts flying everywhere. They travel in large numbers, according to PSM in a level where you and your Resistance buddies go into a cathedral to be revlieved from a huge battle when surprise hundreds of leapers scurry down the walls to greet you with their spike like arms. PSM says its a very overwhelming fight that almost seems impossible to conquer.

During gameplay they have been described to swarm around the player and your fellow Resistance Soldiers. Even though these little bugs already look menacing what they do to your fellow soldiers is unspeakable horrors. They often leap up onto one of your Soldiers shoulders and take their sharp legs to stab them in the base of the neck trying to kill them instantly, however during struggle the creature has a hard time being able to penetrate the skin with deadly force. They resort to stabbing the sharp leg straight through the soldiers head spraying blood and brain matter everywhere.

They have also been known to cut the throats of fellow soldiers and lodge their tail into a soldiers spine. These creatures would pwn the flood.

SLIP SKULL

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/4be89a73.jpg

These creatures are fast, agile, and like to use their Spider-man wall-crawling to their advantage *Think of the creatures from The Descent*. They leap around and usually appear in dark areas *lucky us*. They also have what appears to be turrets that are welded into the flesh that could be controlled by their life pack or by their brains. They usually get a good distance on the player and shoot down at you.

These creatures are very intelligent and when crawling on the wall, if the player is reloading they take the oppurtunity to crawl up and get a good few feet from the player and will see how far they can make it before they hear the fresh clip enter the chamber of your gun, they will leap from the wall they are on to the opposing wall confusing the player. Very Cool:up:

MENIAL

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/resist3ob8nb4.jpg

The Menial's are creatures that are push-overs and are taken advantage of by the Chimera. They do the dirty work like moving experiments around or carrying explosives. They are slow moving creatures and have a zombie-like feel to them. However, don't underestimate them because if you let your guard down a pack of them can sneak up behind you and can tear your face off if you let them get too close (they're very aggressive).

WIDOWMAKER

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/chimeraspider.jpg

The WidowMaker is a giant spider like Chimera, they move very fast and can crush a human being with their giant legs. PSM described a scene where fighting in a huge battlefield with almost dozens and dozens of comrades from both sides of the war are fighting and explosions are going on and while fighting you hear a roar and this huge creature stomps out onto the battle field.

It can be taken out by normal gun fire but the humans have built a machine called "The Stalker" this is created to take on the WidowMaker and give the odds of survival more on your side. They said that its like seeing Mecha Godzilla take on Godzilla. Very climatic.

HOWLERS

Howlers are man-sized dog beasts that are fast and agile. They can pin the player to the ground and give you an up close first person view of their snapping jaws.

The CLOVEN

"There's also a shadowy group of humans who somehow co-exist with the Chimera. They practice ritualistic and violent acts against other humans and are rumoured to have been of Russian origin. So it looks like the Chimera won't be the only enemies in the game."

Apparently the human race that co-exists with the Chimera are called the "Cloven". Which according to Webster.com it means "to adhere firmly and closely or loyally and unwaveringly".

I believe probable the Cloven might do two things.....Have a scientist in the group to work on the virus.

OR

In an interview Ted Price said that historical people will play huge roles in the game but not doing what we know them for doing. I believe that when Eienstein was developing the Atomic Bomb I believe that the Cloven might have captured him and took him to their underground lair which they forced him to put his genuise to bad and make a virus that would do the Cloven's bidding. To make the perfect human race that they don't despise with a passion, one that they are able to like.

http://www.dignews.com/preview.php?story_id=15889 (Here is the article)

Although there has only been seven Chimera Mike Stout has told me that there will be tons more. I'm guessing there will be around 15 in total Chimera.

WEAPONS & VEHICLES:

Auger (Chimeran)

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/machinegun1hs.jpg

This Chimeran energy weapon packs a wallop, and can power up its shots even more by firing through solid objects. Defensively, it can be used to create a floating energy shield that only its blasts can pass through.

Primary fire: Rapid fire (shoots through walls).
Secondary fire: Barrier Wall (shoots a wide shield).

Bullseye (Chimeran)

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/bullseye9dy.jpg

By using its alternate fire to "tag" an enemy with a single shot, the player can then shoot a rapid-fire stream of bullets that will home in on him from around corners. You can even tag the ground, then fire bullets that will swarm around the marker until you decide to send this "ball of death" flying at someone.

Primary fire: Rapid fire ''red plasma'' bullets.
Secondary fire: Shoots a ''tag'' that attracts all bullets. Shoot it a second time to send all the bullets on an enemy.

Grenade (Human)

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/grenade4uv.jpg

We've seen the normal grenade, but there are other grenade types that are currently under wraps.

Primary fire: Normal frag grenade.
Secondary fire: N/A

Hedgehog (Chimeran)

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/hedgehog0io.jpg

Primary fire: Throws a grenade that spreads spikes everywhere when it explodes.
Secondary fire: N/A

M54 Law

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/m54law.png

What makes this PSM's favorite weapon (besides the big booms) is that you can guide a missile after you fire it by aiming at a laser pointer. You can even put on the brakes and freeze the missile high up in the air until a worthy target appears, and fire off dozens of mini-rockets from its smoke trail by using its alternate fire mode.

M5A2 Carbine (Human)

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/auger6rq.jpg

This assault rifle is the standard weapon of a human soldier. It gets the job done, but without too much pizzazz. It does, however, come with a 40mm grenade launcher attachment.

Primary fire: Rapid fire bullets.
Secondary fire: Missile launcher.

Rossmore 236 (Human)

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j75/THEDARKNESS14914/shotgun6pr.jpg

This shotgun-style human weapon does major damage up close, but it's a weak long-range option. Its alternate fire mode triggers both barrels at once for a massive blast, but the bigger recoil takes a little longer to recover from.

Primary fire: Single shot.
Secondary fire: Double shot.

Sapper

Built by humans, but based on Chimeran tech, this is another weapon with tons of strategic potential. It spews out globs of goop which stick to any surface and can be piled up into almost any shape; it can even droop down from ceilings. Shooting one of the globs will set off a chain of explosions. Think of it as a trap-setting weapon; you could glob up an entire doorway to defend your position.

This is only half of the arsenal in Resistance: Fall of Man

Secondary fire: L1
Cycle weapon: R2
Cycle grenade: O
Crouch: L2
Jump: X

Insomniac also told PSM that they will be using the tilt feature in many ways. The only confirmed Gameplay element that we know of is that the Chimera are very agreesive creatures. There are going to be Creatures called "Howlers" Which are man-sized dog beasts which move like a dog and runs with ease and agility. They will leap ontop of the player and pin them to the ground. In First Person glory you will get an up close view of their saliva dripping teeth and snapping jaws.

To get these creatures off you will have to shake the controller wildly to fight the beasts snapping jaws off of you before they make you their next meal. This also occurs with the Hybrids, they will grab you by the shoulders and hold you there with immense strength making you immobile. They will open their giant mouths and lunge at you ready to taste your flesh, this is another thing you will have to shake them off of from doing. If not prepare to see your own flesh and blood.

Some speculated ways thought up by PSM is to guide missiles, and to drive vechicles, such as planes and the stalker however the Stalker is so far the only confirmed vechicle.

ONLINE MULTIPLAYER:

- Up to 40 players can play in competitive matchtypes. The only one announced so far is Deathmatch. Resistance's multiplayer will be highly customizable and competitive with progressive rewards for hardcore gamers while remaining accessible and inviting for newbies. There will also be some sort of downloadable content.

- The game will have a full-featured online ranking system but Insomniac is keeping the details secret for now. They did stress that a big focus is being put on smart matchmaking, so that a new player who buys Resistance a year after launch will be able to play without having to get torn apart by the guys who bought the game on day one.

- There will also be the option to play unranked matches where the player will be able to configure the game however he wants by tweaking areas such as hit points, weapon sets, and much more. Popular player-created configurations may even be made into official new modes by Insomniac and offered as downloads. Conversely, ranked matches will have very limited configurations to keep the playing field level and fair for everone.

- Also, the game will run locked at 30 frames-per-second online and off, no matter how much action is going on. 60 FPS had been the plan, but the developers decided to add much more environmental destruction and special effects, so the tradeoff was made. Even in it's work-in-progress stage, we found that the game ran plenty smooth enough.

GENERAL STUFF:

- You can Play as either a human or a Chimeran Hybrid (the nasty fellow on this issue's cover), and each has its own advantages: double-tapping the L2 button will make a human sprint, or send a Hybrid into Rage mode, making his attacks more damaging, there is a trade-off for raging, however: you're constantantly heating up, and if you overheat, your life will start to drain. Furthermore, while a human will regain full health if he can avoid taking damage for a short time, Hybrids can't heal until their Rage meter has completely recharges.

- The weapon-spawn pods are circled by a series of lights that count down to the time a weapon will reappear. The radar in the upper-right corner of the screen shows all nearby enemies and allies unless they are slowly crouch-walking or standing still without firing. there is jumping in the game, but on a smaller, more realistic scale(it's nothing like those floating Halo-style leaps).

- Flat, circular fans are embedded in the ground in various places, and walking over one will launch you up to a higher area, one fun strategy we found was to balance ourselves at the top of the column of air, hovering there while firing down at enemies below; the up-and-down bobbing motion can make you a hard target.

- As an FPS fan would expect melee attacks are very powerful-two will drop an enemy to zero health, and just one hit will do it from behind. Also, the game will support full voice chat through the PS3's standard network chat function(no word yet if a headset will come bundled with the hardware).

- Map knowledge isn't as important in Resistance as it usually is in an FPS. This is because a lot of work has been put into designing the levels so that there isn't that typical one spot that everone rushes towards to grab the best weapon.

MODES:

- DEATHMATCH: Kill as many people as you can. The person who reaches the frag limit first (or the person with the most kills when the time limit ends) wins. There will probably be Team Deathmatch.

- MELTDOWN is an extension of another mode called "Node," in which two teams race to take over as many nodes as possible. Nodes are large chambers that contain several cylinders, you can re-configure the nodes for your team. Once you control a node, you can choose to re-spawn there after you die, adding strategy to the order in which your team goes after them. Meltdowns adds the twist that these nodes are actually coolants for each team's base, so by taking them over, you're overheating the enemy's headquaters. At certain heat levels a base's defenses will temporarily go down, allowing the opposing team to get inside and deal major damage.

Why is that not good? Supposedly its huge I mean one level alone is like 25-45 mins. The manchest level we saw at E3 was only 1/5 the actual size and the Northern Command was only 1/3. So yeah I'm betting its about 30 hours. I'll try and find the Insomniac article.

And Axid dude Insomniac knows how the keep a game fresh and inovative, Resistance is a story driven game. The levels are huge and the destruction of each level is phenomenial. Insomniac likes to keep things varied and they say working with platformers before Resistance Fall of Man was a grace from god because they are able to do things a lot better in the FPS then have it constantly run and gun.

I mean they'll have missions where you'll have to link up with soldiers, save people, stop a Chimera infested factory with pods, purposley get captured by a mech like War of The Worlds spider monster so you can get inside the enemy base. Drive a huge vechicle known as the stalker through a level and battle Widow Maker Chimera.

These are all reasons why i'm pumped for this game and totally knew thats why people put it down so much because they don't know all of these cool things about Resistance. :)

Cool so what are you going to do until then? Play Gears of War? Because the game looks tight as hell. To bad it isn't for the PS3, I have a feeling after a while i'm going to just sell my PS3 to somebody at a reasonable price like 450 or something after a while. Once I beat Resistance and all of the games I want cause supposedly not many developers are planning on releasing games for the playstation. :(

Here's the review, there are hints to the games length so read between the lines.

After concentrating on platform games like Spyro The Dragon and more recently the Ratchet and Clack series for the past several years, developer Insomniac Games is going in a different direction with Resistance: Fall of Man, a first person shooter that will be one of the launch titles for Sony's Playstation 3 console. FiringSquad got a chance to chat with Insomniac's head man Ted Price about the game as well as some other topics.
FiringSquad: First, Insomniac Games was in the top five best small and medium sized companies to work for the second year in a row. How does it feel to have such an honor and why don't more game developers do the kind of things that you guys do?

Ted Price: It’s especially gratifying to be included on that list this year. It’s been a challenging year for us in many ways. We’re developing on a new platform. We’re making a re-entry into a genre we haven’t focused exclusively on for 10 years. We’ve completely revamped our production pipeline and are still making major changes. These are the kinds of things that can throw a company into turmoil but our team has hung in there and, in my opinion, really thrived in the face of some pretty overwhelming odds. Being on that list is partially the result of anonymous employee satisfaction surveys our guys take and I think the fact that we’ve been picked for this honor says that despite the stress and challenges we’re facing, we’re definitely doing more things right than we are wrong.

And as far as other developers go, I think that there are many who do the kinds of things we do as far as creating a collaborative environment, listening to and acting on suggestions from the team, and providing great perks. Indies like Day 1 Studios, Bioware, Sucker Punch, Pandemic, Valve and many others have reputations for having tightly-knit teams and awesome creative environments. And I think being independent is key because your team, not a larger corporate entity, has control over how your culture evolves. The problem is that there just aren’t many independent studios left in the industry and so there isn’t much press about what we’re all doing to create great working environments.

FiringSquad: You also gave a heartfelt legal brief against the recent law in Louisiana that would ban games with violent content to minors. Why get involved with this law, especially since a similar law was passed in California, the home of Insomniac?

Ted Price: I actually am involved in the fight against the law in California and have participated in the fight against similar laws in other states. I can’t talk about specifics because some of the laws are in litigation. But in general I feel very strongly that videogames should enjoy the same first amendment protection as other forms of expression and am committed to doing whatever I can to help the cause. I think what we all can and should do is write our representatives and let them know how we feel about anti-video game legislation being passed in our states AND legislation being considered at the national level. It’s our right as citizens to speak out and it really can make a difference.

FiringSquad: Most people believe that Resistance: The Fall of Man was the star of Sony's PS3 E3 display. As a PS3 launch title is there any added pressure to make the game as memorable as you can?

Ted Price: First of all, thank you very much for the compliment on our E3 showing. We put a lot of hard work into that demo and it’s been great to hear all the positive feedback. That said, we can’t wait for people to see the final game because we’ll have had even more time since E3 to further polish the weapons, environments, characters, AI, effects and gameplay in general.

To answer your question, I don’t think we feel any additional pressure simply because Resistance: Fall of Man is a launch title. We’ve always been focused on making great, memorable games, period. With that in mind we never really looked at Resistance as a launch title even though yes, it is a launch title. Sound strange? Here’s what I mean: Usually when people think of a launch title they think “port” or “short development cycle” and all that comes from those limitations. Our goal was to create a big, well crafted game, ignoring the inevitable challenges of dealing with a new console. For example, if we had been more conservative (and perhaps more sane) we wouldn’t have multiplayer and we would certainly have a much smaller game with less variety. It’s been painful but as we play the most recent builds I can say that this philosophy has paid off. The game is shaping up to be the largest (in terms of gameplay and geography) that we’ve made to date.

FiringSquad: We know the game is set in an alternate history in the UK, but aside from that the E3 demo didn't really make that distinction clear. Will we see more differences in this alternative world in the full game?

Ted Price: Hmmm, the overturned red phone booths on the Manchester battlefield weren’t enough? Joking aside, the alternate 20th century history that sets the foundation for Resistance is very important to the game’s storyline, and we’re focusing heavily on giving more background during our story sequences to establish the franchise. We’ll also be revealing an extensive historic timeline in the coming months which will help players understand where the world in Resistance deviates from the “real” world.

Plus we haven’t shown any Chimeran architecture yet. During the game you’ll see a heavy Chimeran influence throughout England. This is one of the biggest visual distinctions between Resistance and games that take place in or around the same time period.

FiringSquad: The E3 demo was certainly fast and frantic in its gameplay, especially compared to the Ratchet and Clank and Spyro series. Was it hard to get into a first person shooter state of mind while designing Resistance?

Ted Price: Not as much as you’d might expect. As you may recall, both Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal and Ratchet: Deadlocked offered FPS gameplay mode options. In addition, our first game, Disruptor, was an FPS for the original PlayStation. All of our games except for the Spyro series have focused heavily on “shooter gameplay.” (Though one of the Spyros did have a FPS minigame). And even though Ratchet & Clank had a pretty humorous approach we still learned a lot about balancing weapons and creating challenging combat situations.

FiringSquad: We have seen a couple of interesting weapons in Resistance already. Can you give us any more hints about weapons that haven't been seen yet?

Ted Price: While we can’t get into additional specifics just yet, I can tell you that the variety of weapons and their multiple functionalities in Resistance: Fall of Man should satisfy even the most jaded FPS gamers. Rooting our universe in a Chimeran-infested 20th century freed us up to do some cool non-traditional stuff. Not only do we get to play with Chimeran technology (unlimited opportunities here), a lot of the human technology that you’ll experience has features you won’t see in other shooters. We hope this will further distinguish Resistance: Fall of Man from the deluge of WWII shooters available. And while some human weapons may look like standard FPS fare, once you start digging into the alt-fire modes you’ll uncover some additional capabilities that add a lot to the weapons strategy. For now, let’s just say that you can do a lot more with our bazooka than just firing a standard rocket.

FiringSquad: What can you tell us about the variety of enemies we will encounter in the game?

Ted Price: Unfortunately, we can’t really dive into specifics here either. We wish we could though. To give you a general idea, our E3 demo showed less than one-third of the total enemies featured in Resistance: Fall of Man. One huge differentiating factor for us is that this is not a game where you’re fighting against humans. The enemies in this game come in all shapes and sizes. Some are humanoid, some aren’t. Some use weapons, some don’t. But all have their own unique personalities and combat strategies.

FiringSquad: We were happy to hear about the co-op mode in Resistance, which few FPS have. How hard is it to get that kind of design into the final game?

Ted Price: Fortunately, we have some prior experience implementing co-op gameplay. For example, Ratchet: Deadlocked featured co-op through the entire story mode. So we were able to apply the lessons we learned there to Resistance. We’re currently in the process of fine-tuning co-op gameplay, so ask us again soon.

FiringSquad: What other elements will make this game stand out from the other first person shooters out on the market?

Ted Price: That’s a fair question. First, it’s important not to discount the variety of weapons and their alternate fire modes. That is going to be a big differentiator. In addition, our “Hero Moments” were very popular at E3. These occur when special Chimeran attacks give players an opportunity to either save their comrades or watch them die in really entertaining ways.

From there, we’d point to the sheer size and flexibility of the game. Resistance: Fall of Man will feature a meaty single-player mode with a combination of human and Chimeran-influenced environments. Players will engage in solo, squad and battlefield missions. We’ll offer co-op gameplay throughout the entire story mode, playable vehicles and four-player split screen offline multiplayer action. On top of that, expect a highly customizable and competitive online mode with dozens of players. We really haven’t revealed many details about online yet, so stay tuned in the coming months.

FiringSquad: Finally is there anything else you wish to say about Resistance: Fall of Man?

Ted Price: I’d like to add that at Insomniac, many of us are hard-core FPS fans. We know what makes a kick-ass FPS game, and we know what it takes to make a kick-ass FPS game. We’re very excited about Resistance: Fall of Man and think that come PS3 launch time, Firing Squad readers will be too.

Well, there's Gears of War, CoD3 and 4, Enchanted Arms, LST2, and so much more stuff.
Plus, more ps2 stuff like KH1 and 2, GoW2, GH2, etc, etc.

But when I do get the ps2, I'll be sure to get this, MGS4, KH3 (if they make it) and some more stuff.

He says it will probable get game of the year and surpass his own creation which was hard for him to say but his said he had to give respect where it was do and Insomniac's game is definatley the next Halo.

A must have title he said and you would have to hate First Person Shooters to pass up Resistance.

MARKETING SUPPORT

Sony Computer Entertainment America will support Resistance: Fall of Man with a blockbuster multimillion dollar marketing campaign. This will include aggressive national television, print, online and viral advertising campaigns, full promotional support, dedicated point-of-purchase displays and merchandising support, broad-based public relations support, an immersive and interactive website and feature coverage in the Official PlayStation Magazine/Underground DVD.

Guess so.

have any of you been to E3 and have actually played the game?

Have you? Manny says he did but the guy is so full of his own S**T his eyes are turning brown. He's just being an attention whore. I haven't played the game yet but I know what to expect from Insomniac and I've been keeping in touch with them a lot and asking them all sorts of questions like how the game is going.

Plus almost everyone at E3 absolutley loved the game, and I mean even Cliffy B. the X-Bots ideal said it was amazing. Bungie also has been saying they can't wait to play the final product of Resistance. They said its a very innovative game from what they have played and are really trying to see if they can encompass some of that into Halo 3.

Go to the weekly update section at Bungie, I guess. Thats where my friend the Halo whore said it was.

That's actually not what I said. If you'd like to go up and read, you'll notice that I said how much Resistance sucks and is a terrible game. It wouldn't surprise me if Insomniac is disbanded because of it.

your blinded by fanboyism.

Hahaha, I think it's hilarious how obviously bad this game is and yet you fools are still trying to be hyped for it over the fact that other developers won't say bad things about another game, no matter what, ignoring all the other evidence that this game is just plain bad :o

Dude you haven't even played the game so STFU, seriously dude I was all joking at first and thought it was funny how you would come in here and talk **** but now its giving me a head ache. We all know you didn't go to E3, we all know you didn't play the game, we all know you don't have a PS3, we all know you didn't get the japan version of the game.

All of your answers to my questions were false because I already to the answers to them. Dude you just got killed. Just leave my forum okay. Stop talking bull ****, stop putting us down and leave us alone. You're trying so hard to prove to your self that Resistance is going to suck when its gotten only what 5 terrible reviews out of what 70? That says something.

And game developers don't talk nice about other games, they want to put the other one down and say how their's is going to be better. However Cliffy B. insisted that Resistance is definatley game of the year material. Everything that i've posted so far in this thread about Resistance shows that it is something. You guys are just blinded by fanboyism. Or you're pissed that Sony has now an excellent First Person Shooter, or you guys still can get your head out of your assess because oh boo hoo Killzone sucked doesn't mean Resistance will.

I think either you guys are Halo fanboys that don't want to see this game succeed or you're just mad because its not coming to the Xbox 1.5.

Actually Gears looks pretty sweet but Resistance totally owns it. I mean I love how people have been saying Resistance's AI is stupid when I watch Gears of War the creatures leap over the barricade when you are right in-front of it when they should hide. They try and melee you when you're about two yards away from them. They won't even notice you crouched under them and walking behind them. They try to melee and won't shoot when you're right in-front of them....Man Resistance is definatley better.

Resistance's graphics are also amazing so far and are easily able to compare with Gears of War's graphics.

Ok, all jokes aside, I will tell you the difference. Bungie has always made awesome games. Insomniac has always made dog ****. Halo has always been golden. Resistance, from what little we know of it, is already crap in some very essential areas. Halo 3 just looks like it won't suck, can't say the same for Resistance if you divorce it from all your "omg ps3 gamezorz!1" crap. You guys are, before too long, going to have to face facts. This is nothing more than a next gen Killzone, and everyone but you can see it.

Dude I think thats your problem Killzone was such a big let down for you you're not trusting Resistance. Dude the game is going to be sweet, it has an awesome story awesome graphics way better than Gears of War. You're saying Gears if original. Its graphics are garbage. I mean sure they are nice but dude Resistance's can totally match up to them and probable surpass them.

Insomniac built the graphics house up while Gears if using a generic piece of technology Unreal 3 where you can absolutley do jack **** and have amazing graphics. I mean look at Turok those graphics already kill Gears of War and they've only been working on that game for a less amount of time. Talk about lame:down

Also, James Stevenson, a new addition to Insomniac is keeping a blog at the official page.
Here's a segment about lunch-time multiplayer matches:

Quote:
...Obviously, the other fun part is getting to play games. We’ve had lunch tests of multiplayer in order to get 40 people online and playing Resistance at the same time. This works out really well – Insomniac brings in lunch for us, we scarf down the food and then wipe off our hands before picking up a PS3 controller and getting down to business. I’m looking forward to more of these as we get closer to launch.

I was really impressed with the 40-player game of Meltdown (a temporary name I’m told) that we got into. I had a chance to pick it up as both Hybrid and soldier, and the weapons that I played with were just fantastic. The game moves fast and before I knew it, the hour was over. The only downside was that pretty much everyone else has been playing the game for months – so I can’t say I was doing super-well, though I did manage to paint quite a few people with the Bullseye.

It’s fun to be here on the inside, seeing the decisions get made and getting to see a lot of stuff come together before the game’s release. I can’t wait to dive all the way into the single-player mode this week and really get my feet wet with this title....

Okay Fenrir, the reason why I took those Resistance screens is because supposedly thats how the game looked a couple of weeks ago, however Insomniac told me they look entirley diffrent now because they now are putting in their lighting system which makes the enviornments more real and more depth to them and more erie.

The reason why I made Gears of War a huge picture and not a small one is because I did it the same size as the Resistance screenshots and it looked horrible, the textures were very sketchy and very ugly. So I decided to keep it large because the game looks more beautiful and was a better comparison in representing what the game actually looks like.

As for the screens you pulled out was Resistance from E3, and I will admit Resistance looked sweet but Gears had the upper hand. So I posted more recent pics and thats how you are able to compare them. Resistance has definatley improved a ton over the next two months and expect the graphics to look a ton lot better when the game ships.

Those screen shots aren't even polished yet. ;)

I am not questioning your reasoning for posting bigger pictures of Gears, my friend. I am questioning your reasoning for posting smaller pictures of Resistance which conveniently hide many of the comparitive visual inferiorities of the game readily apparent in bigger pictures and then claiming that it somehow looks better than Gears.

As for the screens you pulled out was Resistance from E3, and I will admit Resistance looked sweet but Gears had the upper hand.

Uhhh, no, E3 was in early May but those screens are from late July, more than 2 and a half months difference and there's barely (if any) noticeable differences between how Resistance looked 3 months ago and how it looks now.

Those screen shots aren't even polished yet. ;)

What effect would that have on how good the actual game looks?

THE LIZARD#1

What effect would that have on how good the actual game looks?

Well when Insomniac polished a game that means they put all of their efforts into making the graphics look amazing, how Insomniac works is they make the game and don't put any effort into the graphics at all because they focuse more so on gameplay and other features before they finalize the graphics. Everything you see now is just place holders. Then in about a month an 1/2 or a month they polish the graphics and make them superb. So everthing that we are seeing so far is just rough drafts of what the final game will look like. Or at least thats what i'm assuming.

And no those pictures that you are saying are from July are actually from E3, they just took the picture and now are posting them. Trust me, they are from E3 with no work done on them. And the game looks way better than that so technically when you said I was cherry picking which I guess I sort of was, thats kind of what you did to. No offense.

However the reason why I took small screens is because thats they way that they are formated and thats the way that I did Gears of War too. If you blow up the images of Resistance they don't loose the quality either. I just don't know how to blow them up to Gears of War size. I try in Microsoft word but when I upload them to my photobucket they don't appear there.

But really I'm done comparing the two games, they both have awesome qualities. Personally I think they will balance eachother out. Resistance might have phenominal gameplay or a story, better weapons and Gears might have better graphics and all that jazz. But remember what Zenien said Gears sacrifices a lot to get those beautiful graphics. Cliffy B. said that the max amount of people on screen that you fight with would be about 8 people where in Resistance you have like 18-32 people. And on top of the you have tons of explosions building crushing, smoke effects, debris, awesome hero moments.

^JUST know I don't know a lot about Gears of War so I couldn't refer to anything so could someone help me out with what Gears offers? But yeah and like avalanche said, Gears is a second gen game and Resistance is a launch title. I personally think that maybe i'm taking it a little too far saying that Resistance looks better than Gears of war but I think Gears is not going to look that much better when it hits shelves then Resistance. I think they both are going to look almost the same.

And thats what I like, Resistance is a launch and Gears is a second gen game. There are also a ton of advantages that not a lot of you guys know about for Gears.

Gears has been in development since 2004, Resistance has been in development for only seven months. Thats seven months to a game thats been in development for 2 and 1/2 years. Thats what I find so awesome is that Resistance looks this great and will continue until they launch.

Even so, Resistance doesn't look anywhere near as impressive as Gears of War, let alone better.

And no those pictures that you are saying are from July are actually from E3, they just took the picture and now are posting them. Trust me, they are from E3 with no work done on them. And the game looks way better than that so technically when you said I was cherry picking which I guess I sort of was, thats kind of what you did to. No offense.

No, I didn't cherrypick. I went to IGN's website and picked the latest screens for BOTH games and posted them here. I have no reason to be selective like that while you apparently do since by the content of you post you're obviously quite favorably disposed towards this game a lot moreso than others.

I said that because the smaller images of Resistance you posted hide the graphical inadequacies of the game I've seen in other videos and pics of the game such as lack of detail, bland textures and not-so-impressive lighting.

And on top of the you have tons of explosions building crushing, smoke effects, debris, awesome hero moments.

Personally speaking, what Zenien (whoever he is) said about Gears is nothing but petty and useless semantics to me when speaking of which game ultimately looks better and in this case, it is Gears of War.

^JUST know I don't know a lot about Gears of War so I couldn't refer to anything so could someone help me out with what Gears offers? But yeah and like avalanche said, Gears is a second gen game and Resistance is a launch title. Still, I don't see how that compensates for the fact that Gears looks better than Resistance. Period. And Lizard, dude, you really seem passionate about Resistance and it's all fine and good, but it's very much pointless trying to argue with anyone with empty words like "the game will look better than Gears of War when it launches" if you don't have any screens or trailers to back it up with.

Here's my post from another thread:

That's an unfair comparison. The Resistance images aren't even half the size of the Gears of War image, which conveniently hides any lack of detail or the apparent lower resolution of the textures in Resistance. And I honestly think you're cherrypicking here because those images of Resistance are the only ones I've seen that look at least half-decent while the gameplay videos of Gears of War clearly shows it is much stronger in the visuals area than Gears.

Here's the latest screens of both Gears and Resistance from IGN:

Resistance

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/719/719896/resistance-fall-of-man-20060720095323903.jpg

Gears of War

As you can see, Gears obviously has better lighting, greater detail and sharper textures. Not to mention the fact that Gears is widely hailed as one of the best-looking upcoming games on any platform ( ) while Resistance has so far been barely a blip on the radar or a ripple in the water.

Yeah thats the same with me, I don't like that many games and thats why i'm going overboard with Resistance because its a game that interests me to the extent of being able to be compared with my anticipation for Spider-Man 3. I mean I don't get games like this often that have an intense story behind it and lots of originality with weapons and creatures. Actually the scourage known as the Chimera broke out after World War I, World War II isn't happening right now because the Chimera have over taken all of Russia, Asia and most of Europe, that whole continent across the Atlantic is basically infested with Chimeran Species. The only last free state is England and thats what the game is all about, you defending the last known state for mankind.

However for some reason Insomniac said that there is a reason that the United States has not been infected and they aren't saying the Chimera are scared to cross water.

"a species of unknown origin named the Chimera have overrun Earth"
Aliens dumbass, not a parasite, ****ing aliens, not that it matters either way. I can't believe your big argument was "oh well they're not aliens so this actually ISN'T a cliche peice of crap shooter that looks bland and boring". It's almost sad that I have to kill your dreams about this game :(

Dude Manny the Chimera is a species of unknown origin however they are a parasite of unknown origin. You haven't been following this game Manny however you think that you know everything. Everyone bow down before Manny because he knows everything about every single game. Manny this is unknown territory to you, go back to Gears of War, thats all you really do know.

Here is Insomniac's description of the game and I don't see the word Alien anywhere?:down

In Resistance: Fall of Man, US and British forces band together in a last-ditch effort to save England from a horrific scourge -- the Chimera. This parasitic species infects other life forms with a virus that rapidly mutates victims into new Chimera. In mere decades this race has ripped apart populations across Asia and Europe and by 1951 has landed on the shores of England. You play the part of US Army Ranger Nathan Hale fighting alongside a group of British resistance soldiers to free the country from the Chimera and to halt their spread across the globe. - Insomniac Games has combined its passion for creating exotic weapons and vehicles with its proprietary physics system to create a unique human and Chimeran arsenal.
- Encounter a wide variety of fluidly moving characters and creatures that exhibit sophisticated behaviors and interact believably with each other and with intricate environments.
- A powerful proprietary rendering engine allows a greater variety of highly detailed and interactive environments resulting in an immersive console FPS experience. Experience the chaos of large, crowded battlefields and tense close combat within infested military command centers and decimated urban landscapes based on real locations in Great Britain.
- Features a story-driven single player campaign with multiple difficulty levels, co-op play through the single player campaign, offline multiplayer and one of the most complete online multiplayer offerings on a console.
- Greater processing power with PlayStation 3, higher storage capacity with BluRay and Dolby 7.1 surround sound output provide a truly immersive experience with next gen sights and sounds.

So what are we left with? A game that features ali..no, I'm sorry, parasite infested humans that simply behave like aliens, in WWII, but with enough anachronistic stuff to make it resemble the near future of today rather than a WWII era game, making it just like every other generic looking shooter on the market, with the exception that it's made by a developer more terrible than most. Got it.

GOD DAMMIT:mad: Okay Manny you win they are Aliens:(

But they aren't aliens that come from outerspace, they are infected humans from a parasite of unknown origin, and I believe that the United States is the one responsible for the Chimera outbreak.

I don't "have it wrong", because I never said there wasn't a ton of reasons as to why technology evolved (which is dumb, people don't just suddenly start making all these huge advancements because of a war, that's why we didn't have year 2000 and beyond weapons in WWII in the first place, despite it being a really, really big war). The only thing I said was that the evolution of technology took this from a period peice with some sliver of unique to it, and turned it into Sony Presents: Project Halo Killer, version 231231312. As for me being really mean, I'm sorry, I don't mean to be. Stop saying things that are wrong and I'll probably come off as a nicer person.

You're just quick to judge a game because 1.Your an Xbox fanboy 2. You just want to piss me off *Which is working:up: * 3. You just want something to ***** about and get attention.
I really wish people would stop invalidating anything I say in this forum because I own a 360, even though the majority of the stuff I've done in here has actually been positive/neutral. As a matter of fact, the only really negative things I've said have been about Sony's ****ty first party, this ****ty game, and the ****ty price, which comprise less than half of my posts in here. No, I don't hate this game because I'm a "fanboy", and no, I don't want attention and I don't even want to piss you off. I hate this game because it's going to be bad. It is going to be awful. That's why I hate it. Because it deserves it.

You don't think other teams try to hype the **** out of there game by stating what the game contains in a very "OMG R U SHUR?" way?

Okay here this is what I'm going to tell you okay.

Resistance Fall of Man takes place in 1951. The Chimera is a parastic creature of unknown origin and it infects humans and mutates them through a very painful procedure. The Chimera have taken out all of Europe and Asia in mere decades and the last free state is England.

You play as Nathan Hale who is an army Ranger. His parents died when he was born from the infection maliera, or whatever its called, the bad yellow fever that was going around. So he was decladered ward of state. Where he grew up doing missions for people that were very very risky. Soon he enrolls into the army and during a training his weaponed misfired causing 12 casualties of his group and two military spectators.

Through vigorous training and physical therapy Nathan Hale recovered and went back to join the army. However he was a new man and not in a good way. He had a growing death wish, the military loved him because they would send him on riskier and riskier missions without hearing the words no.

So when the Chimera broke out the United States thought that they were going to save Europe and Asia from this whole scourage and were confident it wouldn't take that much power. However they dropped of 1,000 men and all of them became infected in a matter of hours. Nathan Hale was the only one able to recover, for what reasons we do not know of. I'm specualting that its the results of all the surgerory he went through that made him this freakin Termniator.

Anyways so thats whats going on with the U.S side of it, now over in Britian there is a girl named Rachel Parker. She is the woman who does all of the voice acting for the cinematics which is said that they are very unique style to them. They are gritty, black and white still photos which fade into full motion action scenes, wich then lead directly into gameplay. They said since the in-game graphics are so detailed the story scenes use them for everythng.

But back to Rachel Parker she is the daughter of a three star general, she was restationed too often to ever know what a home was, the lifestyle was too much for her mother to bear so she left Rachel and her father when she was six years old.

With her mother gone she became very close to her father and they were inseperable, despite her desire to join him in the military her father steered her instead toward a university education. Her eagerness to impress him led her all the way to the theoretical physics department at oxford.
Before Parker could graduates he father offered he the job she always wanted with the Britis Army Intellegience. The Chimerian threat was just becoming known in British Intelligence circles and he needed someone he could trust to be a liaison for the military.

Parker and her father worked closely together at British Central Command until th Chimera invaded England and attacked the base. Parker's father died helping her escape.
She continued to serve on the front lines in the war against the Chimera. Her brilliance at collecting and interpreting statgic intelligence is the only weapon that hasn't failed against them. Parker has long since become accustomed to losing everything shes ever cared for. Still she feelis it might be different with Hale. She wants to believe the war against the Chimera can still be won. However she finds herelf willing to support long shots, even if they are American.

^After typing that out for you guys I think I figured out what Resistance's storyline is.

The United States has always been known for saving people right, I mean we think we are big and bad and we stick our heads in places where we sort of aren't wanted but we want to be able to pat ourselves on the back at the end of the day.
Well what if the Chimera scourage was a plan, what if the United States created the virus and infected the other Continent and let the Chimera go about killing millions of people just so that we could go over there and save the day like we always try to do and we go in and drop off a thousand soldiers however they all get decimated by their plan to save the country under attack.
I mean think about it, when you save someone from a drastic event or something usually they repay you in like supplies, maybe Weapons. What if thats the reason why the United States isn't infected. Also I think that is also another reason why Rachel's dad made sure she got out, because they knew what the Chimera were and he wanted to make sure that the United States secret got out of that facility that was under attack... Hence why she is hesistant to take shots from American's because they are the ones who cause all of this.

Man I think that would be a really good story definatley original.

 Yeah
:down Neh
