The Burton Batman movies a Tim Burton movies, but not as Batman movies? If I watch them thinking I want to watch something about Batman, I usually find myself disapointed, but if I watch them while I'm just in the mood for something by Burton, I really get into them. Is this just me?

Gabe, dude, you created this thread years ago. But I guess its no longer in the database so you were forced to start a new one. Well, I'll say what I said years ago. B89 is both a great Batman movie and a great Tim Burton movie. Batman Returns is where. . .I guess. . .the debate is really at. Batman Returns is technically a Tim Burton movie. So, I guess I enjoy that film as a Burton film and not a Batman movie. HOWEVER, Burton made some improvements with The Penguin. I think Burton's Penguin is WAY better than the comics. And, he also did a great job with Catwoman.

Batman Returns is the most Batman of all Batman movies. All three villains represent different aspects of his personality, it's dealing with Bruce Wayne's psychosis even when he's not on screen.

^^ eh! that's odd because I think the contrary. My favourite is Batman Returns and I love every aspect of it, but I think it is not Batman. Batman 1989 may be less burton-ish and less psychologic but I think these are the reasons why it works better as a Batman film.

excellent question. I think your question weight a lot when "we" rate a batmovie.
Personally I watch the first batman (1989) in order to see both batman AND Burton. I think it's not a "real" burton film.
But when I want to see a Burton film I watch "Batman Returns" no doubt.
I think because the first one is not so much Burton, it works fine as a batman movie.

The first film is Burton subdued and shackled by Warner Bros, producers breathing down his neck, and his own relative inexperience. Burton only turned 30 whilst making Batman. He was, for all intents and purposes, handcuffed creatively, yet he still managed to craft a unique vision of Batman and his world. Also it's important to note that Sam Hamm's first draft script was never re-written, never 'Burtonized', because a writer's strike at the time meant no re-writes. If Burton was just the art director and any Hollywood journey man directed it (say Joe Johnson), I doubt it would be any different.

Batman is a movie I adore and always have, but Returns is Burton's definitive statement on Batman.

I wouldn't say that they're bad movies but just not for me. I'm not a Burton hater but just didn't like his Batman. To each his own I guess.

i gotta admit that burton is a unique filmmaker and his batman movies are no exception.


Just think what batman 89 would be like without burton. It might even be better, who knows. Someone might of done it like begins.

Well. . .Warren Skarran came in during the strike and re-wrote the third act. So, there's that at least.
