Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3
No change in launch date for Japan and North America

London, Wednesday 6 September 2006 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that it would revise the launch date of its PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from 17th November 2006, as previously announced to March 2007.
Launch dates for Japan and North America will remain the same, which are November 11th and November 17th respectively.
The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3.
The previously announced PLAYSTATION 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed.

Well they've scrapped the worldwide launch and gone back to the 'normal' launch schedule. :o

All of the problems that the PS3 will have this next generation will be traced back to one thing, deciding that they absolutely just had to go with Blu Ray. That alone is the cause of all their problems, in terms of price and everything. It MIGHT be justified IF Blu Ray takes off. Though it is something that I wouldn't have followed through on were I the head of Sony. Though, we don't have access to all of their information.

Were it not for Blu Ray, Sony would have been walking into this generation LAUGHING.

Kinda put's sony's badmouthing of microsofts launch strategy into perspective doesn't. I've said from the start that 360 was the way to go and considering you can get a 360 and revolution for the same price as ps3 I really can't see how they'll bounce back from this one.

I'm sorry that it's come to this, but there was really no other way for me to tell you how I feel. By the time you read this I will be gone. Then you unvieled the price. Six hundred ****ing dollars! Do you even know how much that is? And then there's the exorbitant markup that you gave the European market. I can't afford that. Nobody I know can afford that. And then you tried to placate me with excuses about how it's cheaper than other things, like that fancy computer from Tron. And like a fool i believed you! I even put down a pre-order! Looking back now, I realise i was being naive and that you were just using me for cheap thrills. Well, no more.

Today was the breaking point. Delaying the PlayStation 3 to March 2007 because you couldn't make enough machines in time is the ultimate betrayal. Remember that slide show you put up at E3, Sony?

It said November 17.

Not March 2007.

And then there's the reduced American ship numbers and the paltry Japanese launch - how long until you start letting me down on those promises, too? I can't wait for you to show me any sign of commitment any more. It's over. I've returned my pre-order slip. The lies, the delays, the embarassing press conferences...I've had enough. You can keep your precious Japanese and American release dates. UK, September 6, 2006 - News of PlayStation 3's Euro launch delay has been greeted by mixed reactions from key figures from the videogames industry, with many unsurprised by the announcement. "I don't think it's unexpected but I must admit I'm disappointed," said Jon Murphy, marketing manager for Konami UK. "The people who will lose out most are the European consumers, who will again have to wait for months after the US and Japan to get the latest console. Microsoft managed a global launch and the same is expected with the Wii so it's a shame that Sony will not manage to do the same."

A spokesperson for high street retailer GAME (http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/730/730820p1.html#) was also less than surprised by the delay: "We operate in a technology industry where unfortunately product does get delayed - that's just a fact of the market we're in,", they said, before adding, "However, we were never anticipating a substantial number of PS3 consoles for the UK launch in the first place."

In fact many companies perceive the delay as a positive move, believing the slip means more units will be available for Europe come March plus they'll have more time to fine-tune their titles for the PAL market.

"The 360 will be able to get a much stronger grip over Europe which, compared to Japan and the US, is a much more open market. I don't think Microsoft has won the next-gen war by any means but Sony has made it much, much harder for itself."

He continued: "By the time PS3 comes out in Europe there will already be two very established next-gen consoles: the Xbox 360 as a serious games-playing machine and the Wii as a great-value, family-friendly console, so it'll be interesting to see where the PS3 fits into that."

While IGN UK has no doubt the PlayStation 3 will be a success when it eventually hits the shelves, there's no escaping the disappointment that Sony didn't manage a global launch - a fact Neil Thompson, UK Director of Home and Entertainment at Microsoft, was quick to point out: "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan due to the unproven technology they are trying to pack in to their console. It's better to have a faulty worldwide launch than to have a four month gap. Treating Europe as the less important territory will result in a certain number of Sony followers switching to 360. Since the original playstation (IMO the best console ever relative to it's era) Sony have failed to impress me. Despite all this the PS2 and 3 didn't have to do much (especially with the all important BC) to get me to favour them. If FFXIII was dropped from the console I would quite possibly give the PS3 a miss altogether.

I'm curious just how many of the 400,000 in NA (Notice that that's 400k in USA/Canada combined) and the 100,000 in Japan are of the $500 version and how many are of the $600 version.

I also find the fact that, out of the only 500k systems that'll be ready for launch (at the most), that they're only giving Japan (their most loyal fans) only 1/5 of them. Seems to just be further proof that Sony is worrying more about getting Blu-Ray out into people's homes in the USA than they are about actually getting a game console to those who want it.

If you can transfer files between a PS2 (with inserted memory card) and PSP usinga USB cable, I don't know why they wouldn't let you transfer files between your PS2 and PS3. :confused:

What Sony is doing reminds me of what Nintendo did with the Nintendo 64 years back. The N64 was supposed to come out in 1996 worldwide, with a June 96 release in Japan and a Sept release in the US. But when Nintendo were questioned about a 1996 release for Europe, they said 'late fall 96'. Did it happen? No.
The N64 was launched in Europe on March 1st 1997, with a price drop 2 months later. :dry:

$500 PS3 - 80,000 units
$600 PS3 - 320,000 units

So for all the people who are hoping to get the "cheap" $500 PS3 at launch...gooooood luck! Heck, good luck getting one at all.

Well how the heck are they going to be able to make 1.5mil systems in 1 month, if they can only make 0.5mil in the 3 months leading up to the launch? Not only that but they've also ass****ed blu-ray by scavenging the lasers from players for PS3's so you'll be buying a system reliant on a format that will be delayed by a good few months giving HD-DVD all the headstart it'll need to become the standard format. Sony are done. end of story...all hail microsoft :(
