View Full Version : PS3: What Sony Should Have Done

I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE 'PS3' FIASCO, AND HOW ALL THE PROBLEMS 'SONY'S EXPERIENCED COULD'VE/SHOULD'VE BEEN AVOIDED. THIS IS JUST ONE CONSUMER'S OPINION.........TAKE IT HOWEVER YOU WANT.
THINK BACK TO THE 'PS2', WHICH UNDOUBTEDLY MADE 'SONY' THE "KING OF THE CONSOLE MARKET". SURE, IT LAUNCHED A YEAR AFTER THE 'DREAMCAST', SIMILAR TO HOW THE 'PS3' IS (POSSIBLY) GOING TO LAUNCH A YEAR AFTER THE '360'. THAT MUCH IS OBVIOUS. IT ALSO HAD ALOT OF HYPE (FED BY THE 'SONY' MACHINE), SURROUNDING IT'S (SUPPOSED) GRAPHICAL PROWESS, MADE POSSIBLE WITH A "REVOLUTIONARY AND FUTURE-PROOF" NEW CHIP.......THE "EMOTION ENGINE" (CELL, ANYONE?). SO FAR, SO "DEJA VU".
BUT WHAT'S MISSING? WHAT KEY COMPONENT IS DIFFERENT, THAT NOT ONLY WAS THE PRIMARY REASON 'SONY' DOMINATED LAST GEN, BUT IS ALSO THE LARGEST FACTOR IN THEIR FLIRTING WITH FAILURE/DISASTER FOR THE NEXT? THREE LETTERS: http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/4012/150pxdvdsvgga0.png.
THE VERY FORMAT THAT LAUNCHED THEM TO STARDOM, AND IS STILL THE
WORLDWIDE STANDARD IN MEDIA FORMAT, AND LIKELY TO REMAIN THAT WAY FOR A FEW MORE YEARS.......'SONY' TURNS IT'S BACK ON.
NOW, BEFORE WE GO INTO 'BLU-RAY', LET'S REWIND TO PRE-PS2......CIRCA 1996-97(DEPENDING ON REGION) TO THE BIRTH OF THE DVD FORMAT. FIRST OF ALL, IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT 'SONY'......IN TYPICAL 'SONY' TRADITION.....WAS PUSHING FOR ANOTHER FORMAT, OVER DVD.....ONE OF THEIR OWN.........BUT ULTIMATELY LOST OUT. IRONIC, CONSIDERING HOW IT WAS ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PS2'S SUCCESS (IF YOU THINK IT WAS THEIR "GAME LIBRARY".....THINK AGAIN).
NEARLY 4 YEARS LATER, AFTER THE "KINKS" HAVE BEEN WORKED OUT, AND THE PRICE OF THE KEY COMPONENTS HAVE DROPPED CONSIDERABLY, 'SONY' LAUNCHES IT'S DVD-BASED 'PS2' (SOMETHING SEGA DIDN'T DO, AND IT COST THEM DEARLY).
PROMOTING IT AS THE ULTIMATE HOME ENTERTAINMENT HUB (SOUND FAMILIAR?), AND TOUTING A PRICE THAT WAS IN-LINE WITH, OR CHEAPER THAN ANY OF THE TOP STAND-ALONE DVD PLAYERS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET ("AND IT WILL PLAY ALL YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE 'SONY' GAMES, AND MUSIC AS WELL!"), 'SONY' QUICKLY TOOK OVER THE DVD AND CONSOLE MARKET, IN ONE FELL SWOOP. THE REST IS HISTORY.
FAST FORWARD TO OUR CURRENT SITUATION. 'SONY' NOT ONLY HAS FORSAKEN THE DVD FORMAT, BUT THEY'VE (ONCE AGAIN) "BET THE FARM" ON A BRAND NEW, UNPROVEN, UNTESTED FORMAT, THAT MAY NOT HAVE A VIABLE MARKET FOR AT LEAST 2-3 YEARS......IF EVER (SEE- MINI-DISK, DAT, UMD, BETAMAX) . THEY ALSO ARE PARTNERED IN R&D, AND MANUFACTURING OF THE NEW BLU-RAY DRIVES.....FURTHER ADDING TO THE RISK, AND RAPING THEIR STOCKHOLDERS SEVERELY. NOT TO MENTION, THE EQUALLY AS RISKY IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW "CELL" CHIP, WHICH HAS SIMILAR (IF NOT A BIT MORE PROMISING) IMPLICATIONS.

NOW, WITHOUT DIGGING UP A BUNCH OF NEWS LINKS, I THINK IT'S SAFE TO SAY SOME THINGS HAVE NOT BEEN GOING, AS PLANNED, FOR 'SONY'. LARGELY BROUGHT UPON THEMSELVES, THEY'VE HAD ONE MISSTEP AFTER ANOTHER, WITH DELAYS AND MANUFACTURING ISSUES, NOT ONLY WITH THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS OF CELL AND BLU-RAY, BUT ALSO WITH THE OVERALL PRODUCT. IF THEY LAUNCH IN NOVEMBER, WITH LESS INSTANCES OF FAILURE THAN THE '360'........WHICH USES "CURRENT", BUT "FUTURE-PROOF" COMPONENTS..... IT WILL BE NOTHING SHORT OF A MIRACLE.
SO, MY WHOLE POINT TO ALL OF THIS (YES, THERE IS ONE), IS SIMPLE: 'SONY' SHOULD HAVE WAITED ON 'BLU-RAY'. PERIOD.
THEY STILL COULD'VE GONE WITH 'CELL', AND STILL HAD BRAGGING RIGHTS ON "THE MOST POWERFUL NEXT-GEN CONSOLE" (AT LEAST IN THEORY). THEY COULD'VE LAUNCHED WITH DVD-9.......WHICH IS STILL GOING STRONG WITH THEIR PS2'S, AND HAS YET TO INHIBIT CONTENT FOR THE '360'......AND MADE THE BLU-RAY VERSION AVAILABLE A YEAR OR 2 LATER.
THEY STILL COULD HAVE BEEN TESTING THE MARKET THROUGH THEIR 'VAIO' LINE, STAND-ALONE PLAYERS, AND PC DRIVES.
THEY STILL COULD HAVE HAD THE CHEAPEST BR PLAYER ON THE MARKET (LIKE THEY MARKETED THE PS2).......ASSUMING THE FORMAT HAS A FUTURE.
THEY STILL COULD HAVE HAD A "NEXT GEN" ANSWER TO THE '360'.......WITHOUT THE OUTRAGIOUS PRICE AND EMBARASSMENT.
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY.......THEY COULD HAVE LAUNCHED ON TIME ; NOT IN NOVEMBER, WITH A PITIFUL # OF UNITS AVAILABLE, AND BY SCREWING EUROPE.....BUT THIS PAST SPRING/SUMMER, LIKE THEY ORIGINALLY PROMISED.
'SONY', YOU NEED TO TAKE A FEW STEPS BACK, AND RE-EVALUATE WHAT YOU'VE DONE, WHAT YOU'VE SAID, WHAT YOU'VE PROMISED AND FAILED TO DELIVER ON.........AND ADMIT THAT YOU F***ED UP. STOP MAKING EXCUSES. STOP CHANGING THE SUBJECT WHEN ASKED "WHY?". STOP LYING, AND MAKING CLAIMS, THAT YOU HAVE NO POSSIBLE WAY OF SUBSTANTIATING. STOP BLAMING OTHERS, AND PATTING YOURSELF ON YOUR BACKS, FOR THE "POTENTIAL" YOU ARE BRINGING TO THE WORLD. IF YOU FAIL, YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELVES TO BLAME.

in honestly i dont think the ps2 launched the dvd boom, it did that only towards the gaming consumer market. for the everyday/casual/non gamer it was more about the format itself. not only was the ps2 dvd unclusion not only a huge boom for the gaming market but it was also sony's games.( theres no way anyone can deny that), if that was'nt the case then everyone would be in love with nintendo's kiddiness.

how was it self contradictory? you said that the reason sony made it big was'nt because of thier games but because of the ps2s dvd feature, i merely dissagreed with you, saying it was both due to the games and the dvd feature. what sony did was just a marketing strategy to bring a multimedia console to the gaming industry and bring in a new format for the mass non/casual gamers. when i said the ps2 did'nt launch the dvd boom, i meant not by itself. if your a non gamer, you probbaly would'nt even know that the ps2 had a dvd feature, so sony decided to launch the format to two different audiences; gaming industry and tv/movie industry.

I'd agree that Blu-Ray is without a shadow of doubt, the main reason the PS3 has faced so much trouble. It's at the root of the heightened price, and it's at the root of the many delays.
I'm not sure about Sony releasing a Blu-Ray version of the PS3 a few years after the original non-Blu-Ray PS3 however. That would just serve to wind a lot of fans up who'd bought a PS3 in the first couple of years, particularly if developers began to do things that could only be done on Blu-ray. Plus, you potentially end up with two version of every game. The Blu-Ray version, and the non-Blu-Ray version.
I agree with what you're saying on the whole, but I think Sony either have to commit to Blu-Ray at the start, or not bundle it with PS3 at all and wait for the next generation when it would actually be ready. Obviously given the stakes, Sony were always going to go with the former.

THAT'S A MUCH BETTER.......IF NOT STILL FLAWED.......EXPLANATION OF WHAT YOU WERE TRYING TO SAY. YOUR ORIGINAL POST JUST DIDN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE. :o
STILL, YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THAT WITHOUT DVD BEING ESTABLISHED, AND A HOT ITEM AT THE TIME, THE WEAK LINEUP OF PS2 GAMES (PS1 HAND-ME-DOWNS NOT INCLUDED) SIMPLY DIDN'T JUSTIFY A PURCHASE. THE DVD FUNCTIONALITY WAS THE #1 REASON ALOT OF PEOPLE BOUGHT A PS2, EARLY ON........THAT, AND FALLING FOR THE PACK OF LIES 'SONY' TOLD (GUILTY :o ).

WELL, MY PRIMARY POINT WAS THAT THEY SHOULD'VE WAITED ON BLU-RAY. WHETHER OR NOT THEY WENT THE ROUTE OF THE '360', AND HAD AN ADD-ON, OR EVEN A NEWER BLU-RAY VERSION PS3 LATER, WOULD CERTAINLY BE A BIG DECISION. BUT, IF YOU CONSIDER THAT THE MAIN REASON 'SONY' WENT WITH BLU-RAY HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH GAMING, THAT REALLY SHOULDN'T BE A FACTOR ANYWAY. 'MS' HAS THE BEST PLAN, IMO. IF HD-DVD HAPPENS TO WIN OUT IN THE FORMAT WAR (IF EITHER EVEN "WINS" AT ALL, AND THEY DON'T BOTH FAIL), THEN NOBODY WILL BE SURPRISED/UPSET IF THEY RELEASE A NEWER HD-DVD VERSION OF THE '360' IN 3-4 YEARS.......OR WITH THEIR NEXT CONSOLE. 'SONY', ON THE OTHERHAND, IS MARRIED TO BLU-RAY, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS.

NO, IT'S JUST BECAUSE YOU SPEND SO MUCH EFFORT POSTING POINTLESS THINGS (SALES FIGURES AND TECH NEWS NOT RELATED TO GAMING), AND DEFENDING EVERY BIT OF NEGATIVE NEWS ABOUT 'SONY', REGARDLESS OF HOW JUSTIFIED IT MAY BE.

BUT EVERYONE KNEW IT WAS YOU.
SALES DON'T DIRECTLY IMPACT ANY OF US, UNLESS WE HAVE STOCK IN A DEVELOPMENT/PUBLISHING COMPANY. IF A GAME DOESN'T SELL WELL (ENOUGH), IT (LIKELY) WON'T HAVE A SEQUEL.......WHICH MAY/MAY NOT BE A BAD THING. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH THE EXTENT TO WHICH SALES IMPACT GAMERS.

I wasn't trying to hid it (I half assed it by refering to myself in third person) but up until the point I started argueing with Youbannedthat:( over pricing between the two consoles, I think I was relatively under the radar. Only Nintendo fans would pick up on the fact that Aran is the last name of Samus, who just so happens to be one of my fav video game characters. (Samus Aran is the character you play as in Metroid).

Only Nintendo fans would pick up on the fact that Aran is the last name of Samus, who just so happens to be one of my fav video game characters. (Samus Aran is the character you play as in Metroid).
I'M CERTAINLY NOT A NINTENDO FAN, HAVE NEVER PLAYED A 'METROID' GAME.......AND I KNEW EXACTLY WHO/WHAT "ARAN" WAS A REFERENCE TO, AND WHO YOU WERE. YOU, LIKE 'DRT', HAVE A DISTINCTIVE WAY OF POSTING (BAD GRAMMAR ASIDE :o ). IF I DIDN'T TYPE IN ALL CAPS (LIKE I'VE DONE WITH MY 'SPIDEYNUT' ACCOUNT), YOU'D STILL KNOW IT WAS ME, NO DOUBT.

I'M PRETTY SURE I DO........I'VE SEEN PICS, REVIEWS, AND GAMEPLAY VIDS BEFORE.
THE NEWER 'GC' TITLES SEEM TO BE MUCH MORE LIKE SOMETHING I'D PLAY.....YOU KNOW I'M NOT INTO OLD 2-D SIDESCROLLERS. WHEN YOU BUY ME MY 'WII', I'LL PICK THEM UP. :D :p

YOU SHOULD BRING BACK 'ARAN'......SHE WAS MORE NEUTRAL. :)
I think those are done to pimp slap the people who say "sony sucks nobody likes sony and xbox is more popular and sells more"
Otherwise, we should all just get along and swap wives.

They're way too different to compare imo. :o
What little thing pissed you off? The protals (didn't bother me at all) or the keys (I used a Faq: stupidest design desision ever)
Yeah, one sucks and the other doesn't

Putting the Blu-Ray into the PS3 was the smartest thing Sony could have done for themselves. It probably doesn't look like that right now, but once the prices drop and they're able to get units out into the markets and all that, and the horribly botched launch is over, things are going to look totally different. All the incompetence in the world won't kill the Playstation brand in one go, the machine is still going to sell on name alone, just maybe not as much. And every time it DOES sell, that's another Blu-Ray player on the market for Hollywood to consider. Sony stands to make a lot of money from blu-ray taking off, a lot more than they would have made with "just" a non-botched PS3 release using normal DVDs. From a business perspective, it's exactly what they "should have done". From a gamer's perspective, yeah, it sucks that the machine is basically not going to be attainable this year, and costs an arm and a leg, but that'll pass eventually. Blu-Ray was a good move.

That game looks lame. Metroid games have always sucked and this one - from what I have seen - has the exact same feel to it as the others.
Resistance gets me more excited as does gears of war.
