I just bought Final Fantasy VII online. I'm at college with my Playstation 2, but I had the game sent home. I asked my brother to check if it works on a friend's Playstation 2, and he says the game works fine, but that the PS2 controller doesn't work the game. They needed to plug in a PS1 controller. This seems fishy to me, but I can't do anything to test it right now, so can anyone give me a conclusive answer? Do I need to buy a PS1 controller, or is my brother very stupid?

You shouldn't need to. The PS2 controllers do everything the PS1 controllers do and more. I've never had any problems playing PS1 games on my PS2 using a PS2 controller.
Some PS2 games won't work with PS1 controllers due to the button sensitivity of the PS2 controller, but I've never heard of controllers not working the other way around.
Maybe someone else can provide a more definitive answer than me, but you should be able to play VII fine with a PS2 controller. I know I could play VIII perfectly well with one.

Yeah, I own VIII and never had any issues. Oh well, I'll go home next weekend and figure it out.
