All you have to do is seek out "You Need Love" and then listen to "Whole Lotta Love" and the answer will become laser-sharp and clear.

With Led Zeppelin, what happened was...Jimmy, John and John would destroy all other examples of Rock/Blues with their entirely Earth-Cracking musical compositions......then silly, fairy Bobby Plant would come in, daunted, and sing "Heroic Negro" lyrics over 'em, hoping that no one would notice.

In every.single.case. Led Zeppelin's music is light years beyond any old Blues standards, and then Robert Plant regrettably slapped some modified plagiarism over the tunes.

So don't fret! Jimmy Page is GOD, still. :)

This... This is interesting.

DUDE, seriously....sounds impossible and absurd, but I was at this chick's house. We were watching a VH1 Metal thing that she'd Tivoed for me.

Somehow, we started talking about the fact that Paul Stanley:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/Wilhelm-Scream/paulstanley-2.jpg

...did a Folger's commercial, which I've heard on the radio.

She couldn't believe it, googled the f*** out of it, played it, and then, she ended up at some official KISS site, and they had a big menu of rare Kiss sound-check crap.

I continued to watch the show, and she kept muttering titles, then she said "Reelin' In The Years", and I Bloinked and went, "WHAT?!?!?"

She clicked on it, and we heard it.
Paul Stanley...saying "Thuh Things you think're Precious I don't unnerstand..."

Truly, as a member of the Kiss Army, MIND-BLOWING!

nirvana doing bowie's the man who sold the world

That was superb, but, I like covers more when they imaginatively re-work the source material.
With that one, I've actually been at the coffee shop, and heard employees...

"Bowie rocks!"
"Well,....yeah, but this is Nirvana."
"No it's not. This is the original."
"Pfffff...REtard, this is NIRVANA....on Mtv unplugged. :o"
"Khhhh....um, NO.....this is Bowie."
etc.

So, that's kind of telling.

I argued with somebody once who didn't like Johnny's version of Hurt. I said it was better than the NIN original. He said that it pissed him off because the song is supposed to be about drugs and Johnny made it about growing old. I think he was just a sore NIN fan who didn't want to admit that Johnny actually put more emotion into the song than Trent did. I find the musical side of the original boring and plodding too. I feel Cash's version has a wonderful and haunting progression similar to The Beatles' "Day In The Life" in some respects.

Definitely. It resonates more with Cash because he'd had the same bouts with drugs, but also was confronting his mortality.

Plus, Cash's tone is the same monotone vocal in every song, but that's a much better preference to the whispered 'bawling' on Reznor's original. I actually like a lot of NIN stuff too, but I'll admit that the cover was better.

Bad luck wind been blowin' at my back
I was born to bring trouble to wherever I'm at
Got the number 13 tattooed on my neck
When the ink starts to itch, then the black will turn to red

I was born in the soul of misery
Never had me a name
They just gave me the number when I was young
Got a long line of heartache, I carry it well
The list of lives I've broken reach from here to hell
Bad luck wind been blowin' at my back

*cough* late 70's/early 80's Van Halen *cough*I'd have to somewhat disagree... yeah, they did alot of covers (particularly on "Diver Down") but for the most part (save "You Really Got Me") their originals were more acclaimed and are still more well known. "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love," "Panama," "Runnin' With The Devil," "Unchained"...

Classic Michael Jackson ****ing rocks, i dont care how straight you are Someone mark it down... I agreed with Assassin about something. Vintage pre-scary looking child molester King Of Pop is amazing. I'm particularly partial to "Beat It" with its EVH guitar solo.

What....no "No More Tears" by Black Label Society? Heh... If not for me you wouldn't even know bout that one :o

"Knockin On Heaven's Door" (Dylan) "I Shot The Sherrif" (Marley) "Cocaine" (JJ Cale) and "After Midnight" (JJ Cale) - Eric Clapton
"Hurt" (NIN) - Johnny Cash
"Call Me The Breeze" (JJ Cale) and "Crossroads" (Robert Johnson) - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Simple Man" (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and "One" (U2) - Shinedown
"Hole In The Sky" (Black Sabbath) and "Cat Scratch Fever" (Nugent)- Pantera
"Mama Kin" (Aerosmith) - GNR

The big one, and I'm really shocked they haven't shown up yet with the insane ammount of covers they've done....

Dream Theater:

Metallica songs: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" "The Thing That Should Not Be" "Pull Me Under into Master of Puppets" "Peruvian Skies + Have A Cigar (Pink Floyd) + Enter Sandman"

Pink Floyd songs: "Hey You" "Comfortably Numb" (with Queensryche) "Money" "Time" and the aforementioned "Have A Cigar in Peruvian Skies"

Lynyrd Skynyrd songs: (kinda) "Take The Time with Freebird Solo"

U2: "Bad"

Iron Maiden: "The Number of the Beast" and "Invaders"

Van Halen: "Medley" ("Hot For Teacher" "Mean Street" and "Ice Cream Man") and "Mean Street"

Queen: "One Vision" and "Another One Bites The Dust"

Deep Purple: "Perfect Strangers" "Smoke On The Water" and "Highway Star"

Beatles: "Abbey Road Medley" (Parts of every song on the Abbey Road album)

Wow, and I thought I was the only one who's heard it. I agree, it's fantastic. And yes, Elton's "Pinball Wizard" is awesome. I actually prefer it to the original (same with his his "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"), simply because it's far more energetic and fun to listen to. The Who's version is great, but a little too laid back.

A few more:

The Allman Brothers' cover of Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man"
Eric Clapton's version of "I Shot The Sheriff"
All of Elvis's covers
The Who's cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" from Live At The Leeds

Didn't read the last few pages of this thread, so sorry if this has been said, but Whiskey in the Jar is a traditional Irih Folk song. It was performed way before Thin Lizzy's members were even born.

Totally one of my all time favorite covers. Hearing that live at a show is one of my alltime favorite DMB experiences!

I also am a big fan of Tori Amos's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat". Beautiful.

A lot of mine have been posted, but I was all ready to be original and do this long ass post about how much I love Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah", then I realised that some people mentioned it already.

So, I'm stuck mentioning Rufus Wainwright's cover of "Hallelujah", instead.

A lot of the classic rockabilly tunes (stuff by Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and the like) were in fact covers of old blues songs, so I choose their early libraries as my favorite cover songs.

Quite possibly... as I said, Much didn't bother to list who covered who's music, so all I could do was a Google search on each song to try to figure it out... that's why nothing is listed for KISS. I got too many hits for the word KISS to even make a guess with that one.

i wanna contribute to this list, and i'd be willing to bet money most of my choices will be denied lol. also, i'll try not to name any that have already been mentioned, but i only skimmed the pages, so some will probably come back up.

Bohemian Rhapsody- The Braids (just so diff from the original. an r&b version)
Time After Time- Eva Cassidy (was on an episode of Smallville)
Bless the Broken Road- Rascall Flatts

I Want You To Want Me- Letter to Cleo
Alone- Carrie Underwood
First Cut is the Deepest- Sheryl Crow (not necessarily the greatest cover, but I prefer to the original)
Redemption Song- Lauryn Hill and Ziggy Marley
Dance With My Father- Celine Dion (I'm not sure anyone can top Luther's version, but she paid a fitting tribute on the Tribute to Vandross album)

Crazy in Love- Snow Patrol (just funny hearing them do a Beyonce song)

now I need to go look thru my ipod to see if there's any others

I ****ing hate that song. It got way overplayed, especially here in Austin since it's Dynamite Hack's hometown. I'm glad that band is over with. Until Spoon and Okkervil River it annoyed me that the only modern rock bands from Austin that became popular nationwide sucked...Dynamite Hack and Bowling For Soup, especially when the greatest Austin rock band, Vallejo, hasn't become as popular as they should be. But there are reasons for that.
