Molyneux apparently received two death threats from Fable fans when they realized that you couldn't plant an acorn and witness it growing into a mighty oak tree over time--he didn't enjoy the experience, and so we're told that this feature will definitely be in Fable 2.

No... but it's probably something to do with how the world reacts to you, since that's all Molyneux talks to the press about.

"Molyneux said that one of the most magical moments of his career was when he recently saw the Fable 2 family features in action. Returning home from a lengthy quest, Molyneux found that his baby son had grown up in his absence and, as he approached the house, the boy swung the doors open and ran toward him with his arms outstretched. Molyneux also stated that your child's development will be determined to some extent by your own actions, almost as if he or she is trying to imitate you or gain your approval. So, if you play as an evil guy covered in tattoos, you might find that your son gets himself some ink the first chance he gets. As the bread-winner of your family, you'll be responsible for making sure that they always have enough money to eat, and your performance in this regard will also play a part in your child's development."

The killing kids, or the sex thing?

GTA has never and will never have kids in them, Rockstar made that decision long ago. So Fable did not get rid of kid killing because of GTA.

And the sex thing, Hot Coffee didn't happen until summer 2005 and Fable came out Sept. 2004. So that had no effect on sex being taken out.

So I don't know what you're talking about.

Fable's kid killing was taken out because of idiot parents groups who began paying attention again thanks to GTA. Simple.

I don't really want them to have 'kid killing' in it. Though 'spouse abuse' and 'child abuse' would be hillarious.

You can't blame GTA for everything. Yes GTA caused the mass-media to take notice of videogame violence. But that didn't stop the countless number of games that followed GTA from being just as-if not more violent. The media has never latched onto a game and bashed it for violence more-so than the GTA franchise. Fable pulling out child killing was not a result of GTA's media.
If Fable went through with child killing, if the publishers and everyone agreed with it and let it through (Which even without GTA's media, would have caused a problem. Very few games have child killing it them, it's an unwritten rule.) It would never have amounted to the media surrounding GTA.
Child killing was pulled because clearer heads prevailed, and with a game that already was missing alot of promised features, adding children would not help it's losses.
GTA caused a backlash at video game ratings, but few games have ever been called on it. We do not know for sure if they would have recieved an AO due to child killing. It all depended on the execution of it.

Probably, it just depends on what kind of experience you're after. IMO at least, Fable: The Lost Chapters > Oblivion, and maybe even equal to Morrowind. If you want total free roaming, then Oblivion is obviously going to appeal to you more. If you want a tighter, more linear but more "designed" experience (like me), Fable 2 will blow Oblivion out of the water. The best thing would be Morrowind II though, since that game got both RPG styles and blended them perfectly :(

Molyneux also said that he was depending on typical Hollywood storytelling techniques for the setup of the game. Like the first Fable, the sequel will begin with the main character (who can be male or female), and the conflict will be derived from an "unspeakably evil" enemy character. Molyneux said that this was particularly important to fuel the player's hatred in the game and hinted at some sort of incident with your family as a mechanism to drive this.

Molyneux > Bioware. I'm as big a Bioware fan as they come, but Molyneux is a talented, talented guy. Fable 1 was a game he had very little to do with, Fable 2 is a game he is working on hands on with, and that is going to make a huge difference in my mind. Probably not story wise, since Mass Effect has 3 30 hour games to tell it's story and Fable 2 has only 1 20 hour game, but pound for pound I honestly expect Fable 2 to end up as the better game. Even if they just take The Lost Chapters, give it a new coat of paint and some more length, it's going to be an incredible game, and we already know they won't just do that.

I reckon it will be a cute, fun sandboxy game to play, but will lack a sophisticated and engaging story just like the first one. Molyneux makes games. Bioware creates deep, involving worlds with memorable, 3 dimensional characters, stories that rival the best novels and movies, and great, openended gameplay to boot. The first Fable was all hype, and didn't do anything that the first Baldur's Gate didn't do. Sure, you can effect the world, and choose your path, but the only difference is that in a Bioware game, you give a **** about that world and it's inhabitants.

Your children will also be fully responsive to you. How responsive? If you are poor, they will be skinny and ask you to give them food. How cruel you can be? You can eat in front of them without giving a single piece of what you’re eating and they will beg for a bite.

cruel lol

Hmm no mention about the multiplayer stuff

Last, but not least, comes a feature Peter said it will be the one we game editors will write the most about and you, the gamers, will talk about it the most. This is the feature for which people will remember Fable 2, a feature the world of gaming will be surprised about; this is the “super secret” feature…. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until next year for Molyneux and company to reveal what this feature is.
He gave one hint though; this secret feature is in some way related to the “unconditional love” feature explained above in the way that it is all about “emotions” Molyneux wants you to experience when playing Fable 2.

What can be so secret about this super secret feature ? When the characters do it are they actually going to let the players see them do it or something ? Thats the only thing I can think of if its part of the "unconditional love" thing. If its something like that they better be ready to face the same problems GTASA faced

Molyneux wants to get a strong connection between this game and it's players. In Fable 1, you witness the death of your father, mother, you witness your village burned to the ground, just about every bad thing a person can see.

However, since there were no real connections to the characters, it didn't mean an awful lot. At the end of the game, when you had the choice to kill your sister and get a sword, or let her live, I killed my sister. I cared more about getting the cool weapon than the life of my sister.

That whole "shallowness" the game had, in a game where being "good" and "evil" is supposed to mean so much, ended up falling flat.

This time around, morality and values are supposed to be reinforced by the game in a much stronger way. That's why it's so important.

Also, it seems games with the most emotional value are held in high regard by gamers worldwide. Final Fantasy 7, Shenmue, Zelda: Ocarina of Time and others are timeless classics in the games industry and Molyneux may be striving for that goal as well.

I'm not worried about the dog so much, as Molyneux has proven with both Black and White games that a creature can add a lot of good qualities to a game without becoming an annoyance in the process.

However, I'm worried about the lack of a mini-map as well. Hopefully there's at least a "map screen" somewhere in a menu. I'm playing through the mapless "Overlord" right now and I must confess that not knowing where you're headed in the grand scheme of things is very annoying.

you say this like its a bad thing.

i think his stance now is more believeable. he seems realistic now. his past interviews were often times hard to believe for me... and now the man has made me believe more then ever hes putting his heart and soul into this game. maybe he is a little defeated by fable 1,

dammit... he should feel that way, the game would have been the best damn thing ever if half of the crap he poured out of his ass about the game made it to gold. i was behind that game with a vengeance and i was sorely disappointed... granted its a great game, but its not the fable we were expecting.

this may be a bit of a reach but i know i often did my most fervent and motivated work when i had something to prove. lets hope the sting of the first game stays with him in a productive and motivated way. though his lucid plea as to why he's in the industry could have been left at the door.

and in a way hes still making grandiose claims... the types of feelings hes trying to instill are going to be difficult, if he can pull that off i can see this game being an heirloom. don't rush it peter, and remember how much you smoked the pole on the last game so you can do it better this time...

the melancholy musical nonsense in the background doesn't help either,

I thought the combat demonstration was great. I like how you can interact with objects in the world (swing from chandeliers, combat moves differ if you're close to a wall) and now that I've played Assassin's Creed, I'm sold on one-button combat.

The demonstration of the dog went over well. It seems like it will be a pretty suitable side-kick and hopefully not as suicidal as Dom Santiago in Gears of War.

I wish they'd show more of the gameworld, as it's supposed to be one big world this time... but evidently they can't for spoiler purposes.

Yeah, that's the part I'm worried about. What with most games bordering on only about 10 hours of actual game content and world, I hope Fable 2 doesn't go the same route. I'm hoping for at least 15 solid hours, but 20 would probably be preferrable. I'm confident that Lionhead's going to deliver a fantastic game this time around.

Fable really didn't do such a good job with side-quests. They were shorter than the loading times it took to access them and they weren't terribly rewarding. Hopefully they either make the sidequests kick ass, or they just screw them altogether and really hammer in the main quest Zelda-style.

It was a video showing off some of the environment of Fable 2. It confirmed that there will be dynamic regions, seasons, the hero can now sprint, there is a fast travel system, there was a glimpse of the interface, NPCs have names, it seems to have a context sensitive HUD, free roaming was confirmed and the ability to hop fences was shown. Thats all I can think of right now but there is probably more.

The game looks utterly beautiful. And the designer, I think Mark, was right about most next-gen games. XtromaniaK
01-12-2008, 07:38 PM
Even trees on this-gen consoles are rough around the edges in many cases. Much better than, say, your average MMO trees (You know, the four-branch X trees), but some still were... meh. I didn't particularly like Oblivion's. They looked nice, but were sort of dull and lifeless.

The scarring system instead is now linked with the "death" system. The longer you stay on the ground after your health has drained to zero, the worse the scars are that you accumulate. It seems like a smart way of punishing players for dying without making them go through a whole hour of content over again.

I do hope they fixed the aging system, however. I would hope that your age might cap off at mid 30s - 40s by the end of the game. Instead of being a wrinkled prune halfway through.

Super Kal

uchiha_itachi

its probably the worse they look. like if you get up straight away they wont appear, or if you stay down ( because your more injured) they will be deeper and more noticeable. i just hope i can get a cool one one my guys eye, like in did in fable one.

about the prune looking thing, you look older the more you used magic.

one other thing i hope they sort out, is the way you look if your good or if your evil. imo i looked more evil when i was just in the middle of being good or evil, and just looked old..

out of interest, what characteristics would you guys want your characters to show when they are evil or good?

XtromaniaK
01-14-2008, 04:02 PM
Yes, the longer you're getting beat on while on the ground, the more the severity of scarring intensifies. It makes it so there's a draw to being terribly mortal, but so those who want to swing a sword around don't end up looking like pincushions 10 minutes into playing.

WhatsHisFace

Agreed. Realistic growing trees is a completely useless feature anyhow. I want to see the long-promised feature of being about to wield obvious influence on the course of the in-game world by simple decisions you make as you play. The dynamic conversation sounds cool, as well. Though, I don't think the full extent of swordplay will make it into this title. Too much gore, me thinks.

i think somthing like fable needs an open ended choice system. for example you come across two paths, which ever one you take somthing completly different will happen.

also it would be nice if the game could sort of anticipate what sort of story your making for yourself.

like in fable one, i wanted to be a big hero who then starts becomming evil when he finds that bandit who has his sister and cut out her eyes, and he kills him ruthlessly and that puts him on the path of evil, only to be saved from it once hes completly turned at the end by his sister and mother ( if she was alive i cant remeber:huh: )

well...somthing to that effect, i think that gives the basic idea anyway.

The world was also boring, the fast travel system ruined the sense of adventure (not that the dull environs didn't do that already), the side quests were sort of pointless and consisted of mainly the same thing (steal from him, kill her, retrieve that, etc.)... There were a few quests that were unique, but they were few and far between. Having a huge world means nothing if 90% of it is the same damn thing over and over.

It's probably the best movie ever created, after Japanese porn movies.

A developer just made this comment today and I thought it was cool/interesting so I figured I would share it here. :yay:

I'm not going to go into any details but there is a wider range of crimes in Fable 2 (I should know, I coded them). Different places can have different attitudes to crimes too, e.g. something that's a crime in Bowerstone may not be a crime in other places.

WhatsHisFace
01-20-2008, 10:43 AM
Bowerstone was really uptight in Fable 1 because their history included a slaughter fest. You weren't even allowed to bring your weapons into town.

I'm going to definitely beat some poor sap into a corner like I did in the last game. Getting your combat multiplier up ridiculously high + food = ridiculous amounts of skill points.

WhatsHisFace
01-20-2008, 12:05 PM
I did. It was the best of them all. I'm looking forward to what we get out of GDC in March, because there, Peter Molyneux will unveil the next two major features.

XtromaniaK
01-20-2008, 12:09 PM
I agree. It will be interesting to see what Molyneux has up his sleeve. It really is nice being able to genuinely anticipate the features that the game will have. As compared to having Molyneux spout off about all of them the first day of development and having a lot of them get axed because of time/hardware constraints.

Even after he dies in Fable 1, he still says "Try getting your combat multiplier even higher"... a message so important it's the only one he tries to get across from beyond the grave. I guess he didn't have any friends, family or secrets at the time of his death.

He was an old, paedophilic man. Of course he had no friends or family.

WhatsHisFace

It was actually kind of a powerful moment when he died. He went down saving the Guild, and his last words were short but inspirational. Just when I felt like I had actually lost something, I get to the next region and he says "Try getting your combat multiplier even higher" for the 10,000,000th time and it just ruined the beauty of his death.

XtromaniaK
01-20-2008, 12:23 PM
Yeah. But that is a message that transcends death with its imminence.

WhatsHisFace

If anything should have come from beyond the grave... it should have been some insight into the final choice you need to make in the game.

I really wanted the sword, so... sorry Sis!

WhatsHisFace

Fable 2 is hopefully very long. If they're just taking a year for polish, I figure they threw in a bunch of crap and now they're trying to make it all work.
