Used to play Pokemon back in the days of Gameboy when I was a young teenager. I'm going to be 30 in a few months and I picked up Diamond and boy I cannot believe I can still get addicted to this.

After all these years and versions, the gameplay formula is basically unchanged and boy is it so much fun! It's pretty sad, I'm playing on my DS under my desk at work.

You should. Not because it's pokemon but because you should be working.

i remember being practically obsessed with the original game and couldn't wait for gold/silver to be released, which were everything the orignal was and more.

GoblinWhirlwind
03-11-2009, 08:05 PM
The days of the original 151 will always be the best to me. I remember the very first night I had Blue version.. I had made it to Mt. Moon, and when I turned it on again, the file was erased. I was devastated.. I couldn't believe I had to start over. Looking back on it now, it seems ridiculous. That's only a few hours into the game. :hehe:

Are they adding another 100 with Platinum?

Spidey-Bat
03-11-2009, 08:49 PM
There are no new pokemon for Platinum. However, the Sinnoh pokedex is being expanded from 151 to 210.

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Sinnoh_Pokedex#Platinum_expansion

Some of them were obtainable in D/P but now those are all now available pre-Elite 4.

I remember those days. I loved how if you were patient enough to get your starter to it's final stage before finishing Mt. Moon you were pretty much set until Koga. Damn, Koga was a bastard. Not surprising that he was promoted to the Elite 4.

Spidey-Bat

It's kinda funny how people used to think Psychic types were really powerful but there were no pokemon with a 4x weakness to it until DP.

SuperFerret
03-11-2009, 09:46 PM
Once G/S hit and the Dark type came in, Psychic wasn't as big a deal. Changing Bite to Dark type was a HUGE chink in the Psychic armor.

Spidey-Bat
03-11-2009, 09:50 PM
Bite being Dark-type also makes Dark-type pokemon irrelevant. Even more so now that there are a few useful Dark-type TM moves.

SuperFerret
03-11-2009, 09:54 PM
Well, Dark-type's immunity to Psychic is nothing to sneeze at, but yeah, Bite being so widely available gives just about any team a way to take out Psychics.

The one thing i loved about red/blue/yellow was how it was so easy to map out which pokemon you needed, (and usually only one of the few available at the time) to take out a gym leader...

Like for brock, if you didn't have squirtle, you needed to find a caterpie, and raze it to level 10 for a easy "confusion" take down of onix and geodude, a pickachu for misty, a diget/geodude for lt surge, a vulpix/growlithe for erika, a decent bug pokemon (i remember using venonat) for sabrina, etc... etc.. (by this point you pretty much had access to a decent pokemon of almost every type)

but it was kind of a fun strategy. I do like all the many pokemon we have now, gives more room for variety. the games would have been boring if they never added more.

Is it wrong to be 27, almost 28 and excited about Pokemon Platinum? It just feels wrong, but after seeing a 22-year old and a 24-year old... maybe not so much. Just wondering how many of us older gamers actually play Pokemon... and why U get so excited for it?!?!

Brainiac 8
03-24-2009, 10:42 AM
I'm 29 and I still get excited and play Pokemon on a regular basis, so it's not wierd. Plus it's nice since I get to play the game with my daughter, so I'm like the coolest dad ever. :p

I'm going to wait a little bit on Platinum, but that is only because I'm working on filling out my dex on Diamond right now.

Did anyone else go and get the special Regigigas? I did, and he's awesome. :D

So U and your daughter just hang out on the couch catching Pikachus? Must be nice. I used to play it with my ex-g/f, but haven't played since we broke up... (long story.) I was thinking about picking Platinum up with my next paycheck. Already beat RE 5, so looking for a new game to play. :word: I was just really wondering what the average age of people on this site who actually play the Pokemon games. I do still watch the cartoon every Saturday morning.

Yea, I still love the series, and Platinum is a must buy...just not quite yet. I got my father into pokemon and he's quite a bit older. He sits there on his armchair with a DS catching Pokemon, it's rather humerous.

But once again, my daughter has like the coolest father and grandfather ever. :D

I'm excited because Platinum allows me to catch two of my favorites pre-National Dex: Tangela and Gligar. I mostly battle with my younger brother (who's 19 and much more obsessed than I am), and getting Action Replays for Diamond and Pearl killed the fun after a bit. Although it had us develop a rivalry between his Heracross and my Snorlax.

Brainiac 8
03-24-2009, 01:30 PM

I'd never use an Action Replay to get a Pokemon. I'd only use it to trigger events like Darkrai.

Best pokemon to fight with is a level 1 Ratata holding a Focus Sash with Endeavor and Quick Attack. Focus Sash leaves it with 1 HP, Endeavor makes the other Pokemon have 1 HP, then use Quick Attack to hit first next turn and kill it.

They're actually a lot more fun with cheat engines at Lv.100. Any moves are legal except for one-hit KOs and Electric or Grass type moves, so all is fair.

That's an awful far length to go to just take out a Snorlax. Low kick is easier to get and works just as well, plus it doubles as a one-hit KO on Dialga.

sorry, but if you think that, your crazy lol :-P

Red & Blue (1996(JP), 1998(US))- Gameboy

Yellow (1998(JP),1999(US)), Silver & Gold (1999(JP), 2000(US)), Crystal (2000(JP), 2001(US)) - Gameboy Color (tech same system, just upgraded with new features)

Ruby & Sapphire (2002(JP), 2003(US)), Fire Red & Leaf Green (2004(JP&US)), Pokemon Emerald (2004(JP), 2005(US)) - Game boy advanced (Technically First new system)

Diamond and Pearl (2006(JP), 2007(US)), Pokemon Platinum (2008(JP), 2009(US)) - Nintendo DS Next New System

They average 1 new game every 2 years, and one new generation every 4 years. Unless they plan on doing 1 year (like silver/gold/) was from yellow, we wont see a new pokemon generation till next year in japan, and 2011 in the US.

I got a Pokemon game for my DS lite, but never really got too interested because there were too many moves for each Pokemon, and I'm sure which one to get since you cannot go back and get the move you didn't pick, and I'm not that interested to research about it.

Actually, you can in Diamond and Pearl.

Researching the moves takes all of 3 min. Not that hard. If you keep playing it you'll get into it.

So I gave in... no matter my age, and bought Platinum last night. Of course, I had to go with the default names. (Which is something I do with any RPG.) I just got my Pokedex from Prof. Rowan. And you know, I'm not too sure about that Cyrus guy I met at Lake Verity. (For the record, I know all about the game... just kind of playing along.) :word:

Is there never going to be a new game where you can get Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle without trading them?

I wish they'd remake the original for the DS, or have a game where you could actually get every single pokemon.

Spidey-Bat

They already remade Red and Blue on Advance.

They'll never make a game where you can catch them all; wanting it at this point is pointless.

I found em in Diamond for sure. They aren't as common as in the other games, but they're there. I found in Diamond I wasn't needing them as much, I was fairly pleased with my teams leveling so the candies weren't a biggie

That's certainly true. Me and my cousin used to battle lv. 100 pokemon and I would beat him everytime regardless of who he had. I hand raised a Houndoom to lv. 100 and he was infinetly stronger than anyone that was rare candy raised.
On a side note, what kind of pokemon did y'all raise? Did you pick ones that were common and naturally strong or did you find someone that really needed fine tuning to become powerful? I traded over a bunch from FireRed to Diamond and my team was (I'm pulling straight from memory so I'll list what I remember) Raticate, Lickitung, Blastoise, Weezing and Nidoking. It's been awhile since I last played so I'm kinda hazy on who else I had.

ive always been more of a collector and a breeder then a battler... I don't really have anyone to battle with other then those in the game (and lets face it, there not too hard) So honestly i can't judge how powerful my pokemon are. But i usually raise my "team" that i went through most of the game with to Lv100 pretty easily, as well as some of the Legendary pokemon. I do however typically love raising Eevee and there evolutions. I have to think which pokemon i currently have at lv 100...

btw.. i still hope someday we get a "pokebox" because i miss alot of my R/B/Y/S/G/C pokemon that we've never been able to bring into the new pokemon games...

I miss my surfing pickachu and the pokemon i gave weird moves to.

Pokebox?? Like a place to deposit Pokemon from past games to be used in the new ones?
I also can relate about breeding and being a collector. I always liked having the rare pokemon, however most of the rare ones like the legendary's werent that rare since everyone could have em, so I always set my sights on very interesting and hard to get Pokemon. To this day one of my crowning achievments was my lv 100 Weezing with Psybeam. Pokebox was a "game" for the Gamecube that you could store your GBA Pokemon in.

My team in Diamond was Infernape, Starapator, Gyarados, Lucario, Gengar, and Garchomp.

My best pokemon are probably my egg moved pokemon. I have a bunch of them, some of which I had to breed with others a few times to get the moves.

i remember in my original Blue and Red days i always had Blastoise who was so badass and helped me with Brock lol, then i trained Pikachu till level 100 w/o any rare candies then at the end of the game i always gave em a Thunder Stone to be Raichu, then i always had a legendary pokemon always in reserve and i had Hypno who was soo badass when it has hypnosis and the dream eater, and of course my fave Dragonite who owned all.

for the current gen, i used Infernape, Lucario,Floatzel, Luxray (my fave current gen pokemon), Garchomp, Staraptor.

yup, ideally they need a US one which allows pokemon from EVERY game to be able to be stored on it (sure you can't bring any new pokemon (or moves, or items etc...) to the old games, but there really shouldn't be a reason why we shouldn't be allowed to bring all the pokemon from the past games into the new one.

What I meant yesterday, is a fully 3D remake of red/blue for Wii. The layout wouldn't be that different from a Zelda game. Large expanses of open wilderness, traveling from Pallet to the Elite Four. You could actually see wild Pokemon roaming, maybe even travel around with other trainers. Battles could be like Stadium/Battle Revolution, except even more expanded on.

It would take us back to the good old days when there were only the first 151, and then other games could follow.

Now that I think about it, Macy would probably be an awesome Professor Oak.

right now for platinum i have:
Turtwig
Piplup
Chimchar
Gible
??? (thinking Lucario)
???

Ice and ground types would kill this team. But this is just for story..i'm trying to remember if there are many pokemon with ice and ground moves

i could see them going the anime route (like having two friends on the journey with ash/red) if there were to be a film. it'd have to be a pretty long movie if it were to fit all of the kanto storyline in it.

yeah but they went the anime route (like 13 films i think), but yeah the live-action movie would be like 3-4 hours long if it were dealing with the whole kanto region.

I have a friend who is the best person ever when it comes to competetive battling.l I've never heard of or seen him lose. No legendaries, obvously, just a kickass team.

You'd be right to expect that. Platinum is by far one of the best Pokemon games I've played next to Silver (I'm a lugia fan). I'm certainly in love with Pokemon again. The only thing I wish it had was a game after the game. Silver let you go to Kanto and mess around when you were done. I want that!

Funny enough I've never completed a Pokedex either. I never ended up finishing any of the games except for Diamond. I'll be looking forward to Heart Gold and Soul Silver actually. Would be better catching Pokemon through that game rather than using that Park with your old GBA FR/LG or Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald games. Perhaps I'd just catch the Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle through the old games into one of the others and be done with it. Can't remember much of the R/S/E Pokemon that well. I think I managed to get the 3 starters of that era in my Emerald game. Ah well I guess I'm set. ;)

I think what I'll end up doing is get Platinum. Finish that and go back and try to complete my Pokedex in that by bringing in the earlier starters.

I got Pokemon Colosseum as well actually. I've been meaning to finish that game but never got around to it not to mention raising my Pokemon on that 100 tier battle tower thingee.

Complicated strategy but if you have most of your old carts, go for it. I'm down to my FireRed and Ruby versions which is why I'll hack my FireRed to get the Mystic and Aurora tickets. Yes, its cheating but I can't attend Nintendo events in the States and I never got a E-on card reader.

That being said...I dunno...Gold and Silver always rubbed me the wrong way. I think I played Crystal of that series...but I dunno...It never had the same feel as Red and Blue.

Oh yeah, just finalized my Kanto and Hoenn Pokemon teams, true to the flavors of each:

Kanto Team (FireRed)

- Charizard Lv 75
- Marowak Lv 70 (fave Pokemon of all)
- Primeape Lv 66
- Lapras Lv 66
- Beedrill Lv 59 (the weakest link...Bug Pokemon have that tendency)
- Fearow Lv 62

Hoenn Team (Ruby)

-Blaziken Lv 43
-Mightyena Lv 50 (damn it, I love this dog.She saved my ass so many times)
- Hariyama Lv 45 (Pretty much Primeape who can do Surf, but kicks ass too)
- Zangoose Lv 43 (my unevolving badass of the team. Love this guy)
- Wailord Lv 45 (Truth is...I don't really use her much...)
- Swellow Lv 39 (Same problem. Outside of FLY, I don't use this guy much)

Pokemon I want but am too lazy to train:
- Salamence
- Dragonite
- Loudred
- Alakazam (trade issue)
- Gengar (trade issue)

You might notice I don't favour Electric types much. I'm warming up to Shinx in Platinum but I made a mistake pumping Kricketune instead of training a flying type. Stuck at Maylene now...

You could always use the GTS in Jubilife City to get em. Just deposit them and make a ridiculous offer like a lv 9 mew and then get them right back. It's easy

Spidey-Bat
05-08-2009, 11:27 AM
That way is annoying though because you have to find a trade to make first and that can take awhile. It took me about 20 min to find a trade where someone didn't want a lvl 100 Darkrai or something.

no...you deposit your Kadabra and put a ridiculous return value...then you remove your pokemon right away from the GTS so that nobody takes it (nobody has ever taken my pokemon)

when your pokemon comes back to you, it will evolve. Don't trade for someone else Kadabra

I'm already wishing I had them right now.

I remember in my old Gold game I actually managed to catch Ho-oh but never ended up catching Lugia. I had my mate play through Silver but I don't think he ended up catching Lugia in that. All I remember is that he raised Cyndaquil all the way to Typhosion calling it "Scorch." Damn that was funny. He wouldn't stop raving about it haha. :D

And I just remembered that I once purchased a Fire Red cartridge on Ebay a number of years back containing all the previous 386 Pokemon. Yeah that does include Mew, Celebi, Jirachi and Deoxys. I guess I'm all set then. I suppose I'll just pick up Platinum finish that and then plug in the old GBA cartridge and catch them via Pal Park (whatever it was called). I've misplaced my Pearl card sadly. :( Perhaps I'll revisit Diamond and catch all I can catch in that game that I haven't acquired yet.

And damn ain't that www.serebii.net site a handy resource. :)

And Brainiac I'll be turning 33 next month. I feel no shame anymore especially that there's like minded Pokegamers here especially around my age group. But I still won't go out there and proclaim to everybody that I play Pokemon. Argh screw them all. ;)
