View Full Version : Batwoman doesn't suck?

Since she was announced early this year, Batwoman's been getting a lot of heat from us fans. Most of it deserved, I think. Complaints about her creation (or, at least) her sexuality being little more than a PC PR stunt rang quite true. In my opinion, at least.

However, as we begin to see more of her in the 52 series, I can't help but start to like her. While her creation may have been political and more than a bit stereotypical, her characterization (I assume from writer Greg Rucka) has been anything but.

In the beginning, I was quite worried she'd turn out to be little more than the lesbian figurehead the news reports (and later, fans) pegged her to be - especially since I felt Renee Montoya's characterization was relying a bit too much on her sexuality recently - but, so far, her personality seems to be very balanced. Her sexuality a mere addition to her personality rather than the defining aspect of it. If anything, her defining characteristic seems to be what Batwoman was always supposed to be about; a female version of Bruce Wayne. Which, personally, I'm really liking a lot.

Granted, yeah, some lesser may come along immediately after Rucka and totally screw her up, but, so far IMO, she nearly as bad as everyone makes her out to be. Does anyone else who's been following 52 feel the same way?

Oh, and for everyone who isn't a 52 reader, here's a few sample pages of her appearances so far...

It seems to me that the only people who claim she is a publicity stunt are those who haven't actually read her in the comics. Did it create a lot of noise about gays in comics? Did it put DC in the spotlight for fifteen minutes? Sure. But that's not all her character is about. In fact, it isn't what it's about at all.

Her sexuality hasn't been mentioned at all, it seems, except for Renee having a history with her. It's obviously the day to Winick's "HEY, LOOK AT ME! HEY! HEY!" approach to sexuality's night.

I did sorta feel they were employing the "HEY, LOOK AT ME! HEY! HEY!" approach with Montoya at the beginning of 52, but, much like Batman being a prick for 20 years, it seems like a pretty interesting character arc once it's over.

Those pages are pretty lame though. Why target a book at adults and write it like it's for kids?

Perhaps the quality is decreased due to you not having read a significant portion of the story.
