A 'GREAT' DANCER LOSES
TO A 'GOOD' DANCER

By: Gordon Bishop

America is obsessed by celebrity.

Look at the results of the popular ‘Dancing With The Stars” television show. Anyone who watched the show during its 10-weeks season recognized that a little-known actor named Mario Lopez set new winning records for that annual dance-off.

Even the three judges of the weekly dancing contests agreed that after four-five weeks into the competition that “Mario had reached the level of professional as a dancer.”

That’s about the highest praise you can bestow on someone in any TV competition.

So who won?

A name and face just about everybody in America and beyond immediately recognize: Three-time Super Bowl champion and the National Football League’s all-time leading rusher and NFL Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboy’s superstar Emmitt Smith.

I’m not a follower of football and only watch a game if the New York Giants or New York Jets wind up in the Super Bowl playoffs. Even I know about the great one, Emmitt Smith.

Smith is definitely a good dancer, considering his size and age.

But he’s not a great dancer like Mario, who was spinning circles around Emmitt during the weekly broadcasts on ABC-TV.

The three dance judges agreed that “the best dance of this season’s” contest was Mario’s free-style dance that copped a perfect score. Mario won the judges’ nickname “Super Mario” during the entire competition.

So why did Mario lose?

Celebrity!

Football is America’s favorite game, topped off by the ‘Super Bowl. Emmitt Smith’ is a football legend. The overwhelming majority of Americans watch football, especially the Super Bowl, which usually has the highest Nielsen (viewers) ratings every year.

I really enjoyed Emmitt. He has a great attitude, a charming smile, and a good dancer by anyone’s standards. But he simply could not execute the incredible, magical footwork and gymnastics that Mario performed in his winning finale.

It’s unfortunate that Mario lost because he was best dancer of the season. Period.

Even Emmitt Smith in his heart-of-hearts recognized that he could not compete with Mario in precision and dynamics. Mario’s choreography was much more complex and difficult than Emmitt’s.

AOL, America’s largest on-line Internet provider, called Emmitt’s stunning win an “upset.”

AOL posted this on its on-line service: “The dance-off is over, and voters (the public) went with charm and sass over technicality and precision, picking NFL legend Emmitt Smith over actor Mario Lopez.”

Frankly, I never heard of Mario until I started watching ‘Dancing With The Stars.” The younger generation of my two daughters age (in their 30s and 40s) knew who Mario was as the star of the ‘Saved By The Bell” TV show and his appearances on the Animal Planet cable show.

But the big guy walked away the glittering trophy and Mario went home with his extremely talented professional partner Karina Smirnoff.

I have a gut feeling that the Disney entertainment empire, which owns ABC-TV, Disney Parks around the world and an international movie studio will star Mario Lopez in a blockbuster feature film, where he’ll be able to show off all of his talents, led by dancing and his other dynamic skills.

I love to watch dancing shows because my wife Jeanne was a ballet dancer during her youthful years before she became a fifth- and third-grade teacher. Our favorite movies are all about dancing, led by “Dirty Dancing” and the recent movie, ‘StepUp’ about a white guy growing up in a black neighborhood and winning the ‘Hip Hop’ dancing’s highest honor at a local, high-brow ballet school.

I’m sure any Disney dancing movie starring Mario Lopez will be box-office blockbuster.

Emmitt. Heres why, anyone who ever watched Saved by the Bell knew mario lopez was already a good dancer, Emmitt had to do a lot more work to get to where he got to.

lopez had prior dancing experience, so many claimed he had an advantage.

i think emmitt grew the most throughout the competition and improved the most.

plus mario's partner aggravated me for some reason. she always looked like she had an attitude

**** the culture of celebrity. There is no reason I should know how good of a dancer any celebrity is. I refuse to know. Go away, celebrity cult.

The guy who wrote the article didn't even know who Mario was so thats why he's talking nonsense. Emmit won because he impressed everyone. We've already seen AC Slater pull off dancing moves before. There was nothing impressive there.

So basically the writer of the article was right. You guys could care less about true execution and talent. You just "like" Emmitt.

Wow. :csad:

I think most of us could careless period. But Emmitt had more charisma, worked harder and really beat the odds. Im sorry if it didnt meet your high reality show dance competition standards. Also, Lopez reaction to losing, whining doesnt win him many points.

:whatever: When looking back, if he had taken the loss like a man, people would look back and be fairly more objective in the decision in retrospect.

Emmit was surprisingly good for his size or anybody's size for that matter, but Mario was extremely good. he should have won.

yep. This was "dance" contest. Not a "class" contest. Though I thought Lopez had that too.

Both Cheryl Burke and Karina Smirnoff were pretty good and so cancel each other out. Mario was far better as a dancer than Emmitt. This is clear if you go on pure dancing ability. I personally voted for Mario. However, Emmitt had a bigger fan base, and people probably looked at where he was when he started, and where he finished.

Emmitt was good, and definitely good enough to make the final two, but of the final two, Mario was a better dancer per se.
