Dead in here today.... :(
David Shore and Peter Blake have found their leading lady and it's Phoenix herself: Famke Janssen.
The untitled NBC pilot from David Shore, creator and exec producer of House, and House writer Peter Blake is a light drama/police procedural revolving around a female detective and her colleagues in Los Angeles. (Thank god, not another Manhattan-set cop drama.)
Famke Janssen (Nip/Tuck, X-Men) has been cast in the lead role of Christie Winters, a "beautiful" female cop in her 30s who "dresses well" and who gets paired with a new partner in African-American detective Luis Nelson. Fittingly, Christie meets her new partner at a crime scene on Mulholland Drive. (Again, thanks for the LA setting.)
Of course, this being a light, female-driven drama, expect some romantic hijinx as well as homicides, as poor Christie, though a great cop, is hopeless at dating. (Though I find it hard to believe that anyone that looks like Janssen is ever starved for company.)
The pilot, from NBC Universal TV, still is in dire need for a title. Let's just hope it's not "Lonely Winter Nights."

I donno. I really hate the premise of the show. But, I think I'll still give it a chance.. I mean, it's Famke! Plus, they're about 5-6 different hospital shows on tv, all of which are really different and still pretty good. The same can be said for all the cop shows.

newwaveboy87

The Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water, The Messengers...they all look the same to me :down
JustABill
02-02-2007, 06:40 PM
Oh yes. These plots are so the same....
''Creepy little American/Japanese girl dies by her mother closing her in a well cause she was psychic, years later a mysterious cursed video tape circulates created by the little girl to draw out her wrath. A reporter searches for answers."
"Seemingly normal and married asian couple are torn apart when the husband finds his wife is in love with another man. He murders her, their son, and the family cat. Years later, an American student traveling abroad in Tokyo discovers the house and the woman and her son now hold a powerful grudge that envelopes everyone it touches."
I can't speak for Dark Water and Messengers as haven't seen either, but both are fairly different plots as well. You just see the ghost element and think it's the same when it's not.
newwaveboy87
02-02-2007, 06:42 PM
all of the ghosts, how the ghosts operate, the music, cinematography, production design, the type of scares they provide...all samey.
JustABill
02-02-2007, 06:51 PM
Kayako and Samara/Sadako are very different ghosties and have very different types of movements and scares alone. They have inspired other ghosts in both Japanese and American horror films, but are pretty much two VERY DIFFERENT characters.
It's pretty much an insult to Takako Fuji to say her character is anything like the other characters. She is a professional at the movements Kayako makes and GENUINELY ****ing creepy in character and genuinely gave her all into all the JU-ON/Grudge films.
The music, cinematography, and production design are often very SIMILAR in TONS of horror films. Not just this recent asian horror influenced ghost film insurgence.
I mean look at Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees. There's a case of horror baddies that are pretty much genuinely designed the same/ripped off one another for years.
First Jason ripped Michael off, then Michael ripped Jason off.
It happens in the horror genre in general. Horror is a genre that very much does not try very much new in some form from the current popular trend. Just like Saw's popularity has now made it the ''cool" thing to do to be extremely torturetastic and gorey. (Saw II and Saw III still suck though. :p)
newwaveboy87
02-02-2007, 06:57 PM
this is probably why the horror genre sucks. just a thought?
and, to me, all of those ghosts move, look, and act alike. everytime i see a trailer for a new remake i roll my eyes and pretty much guess at some point in time that a weird looking overly white with big black eyes kid ghost is going to show up, make a weird noise, probably either be some state of decomposing or make a weird noise, and crawl into/out of something. they're all so predictable and samey. i also have a strange feeling that in their original Japanese film form they're much more interesting/scary, but Hollywood's remakes all look exactly the same. same blue filter lense, same New England designed home, there's always some cute girl-next-door type, some cute/freaky lil' kid who sees/knows something's wrong before hand...none of these remakes take the genre conventions and do anything interesting with them. The Ring didn't scare me, i didn't bother with The Grudge, Dark Water, and i won't bother with The Messengers.
the horror genre is so underwhelming. what happened to the good ones? :down
tangent - Blood & Chocolate was another bad looking one. looked just like Underworld, which sucked. and they had the same producing team. that should've been a red flag.
JustABill
02-02-2007, 07:00 PM

nothing i've seen has proved to be a gem. the last gem i saw was the Scream franchise. those were great. not scary, but a whole lot of fun.
that's another problem i have with the horror genre -- they don't scare me. have i seen too many movies? read to many books? am i too savvy for my own good? i can predict this things from a mile away. usually based on the trailer alone.

In regards to the Superbowl.........meh.
I was really pulling for New Orleans, but now? Hate the Colts, don't care much for "Da Bears" either. Well, I still have the Steelers win from last year to carry me through.
I would, however, really appreciate the Bills actually winning a Super Bowl someday. (remembers the old days when the Bills made it to the big game four years in a row...only to lose each one :( )
Think I rather watch the Puppies Bowl III on animal planet station, more fun and much cutier :D

And it is sooooooo cold that the kids have a 2 hour delay before they go to school tomorrow (they may yet be off all day, no decision yet), and I am really caffeined up tonight. Too much Pepsi.
It is now -17 (wind chill) and it will be -25 in the morning. Too cold. *chips away the ice from face* To top it all off, I have to call off tomorrow because a) I have no car because the gas tank is dangling and b) the kids have that stupid delay and I have no one to take care of them anyway.

Oh I hate calling off, especially for something so trivial. I like to save the days for real problems....like menstrual cramps or something. I feel real intense guilt over calling off. Of course it doesn't keep me from enjoying the day off, but still, I feel guilty about it.

02-04-2007, 10:44 PM
I rarely feel guilty. I suppose it's because I am generally lazy and hate to work. It would be worse if I had no money and losing time meant real trouble, but missing a day here or there doesn't hurt me much.
Jan Irisi
02-04-2007, 10:48 PM

Ah, see, I can agree with you there. That isn't the way it is at my job. If someone doesn't come in, no one is forced to cover that person, it is voluntary (as overtime) plus they have "flex" people who know more than one job that are there to cover who's out. I would feel a lot worse if someone was forced to do my job and theirs as well. I see your point.

no wisdom teeth removal is coming after the braces come off. which, by the way, i'm 6-7 months ahead of schedule. they're coming off around my birthday, possibly sooner. awesome!
anyway, my teeth hurt because they:
gave me rubber bands to pull from the incissor back all of those teeth outwards
put in a new upper wire

yeah, my dentist looked at my xrays when i was 6 and told my mom that i'd need braces... every one of my adult teeth was the size of two of my baby teeth, and my baby teeth were already perfectly aligned with no spaces in between.
my options were to let all my teeth grow in, overlapping one another and growing out of the top of my gums into my cheek, or remove 4 adult teeth, expand the width of my bite and slap some metal on for a few years.
i'm infinitely glad my parents didn't let me talk myself out of that... i love my teeth.

To go down the drain, to drop in quality. It's coined from when Fonzie literally did it on Happy Days.

"Jump the shark?" What does that mean?
it's been brought up so much in this thread, and the old one too...but here's the definition:
Jumping the shark is a metaphor that was originally used to denote the tipping point at which a TV series is deemed to have passed its peak, or has introduced plot twists that are illogical in terms of everything that has preceded them. Once a show has "jumped the shark", fans sense a noticeable decline in quality or feel the show has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm.
Jump-the-shark moments are typically scenes that finally convince viewers that the show has fundamentally and permanently strayed from its original premise. In these cases, they are viewed as a desperate and futile attempt to keep a series fresh in the face of a decline in ratings. In other cases, the departure or replacement of a main cast member or character or a significant change in setting changes a critical dynamic of the show.
