They have given a new meaning to the word stupidity.

They're the beings of a lower plane ... Often refered to as the n00b-realm.

You want 'ignorance'? How about Adam Sessler claming on live TV that Super Dragon Ball Z isn't close enough to the anime when the box art clearly states it's based off the manga? That's ignorance. At least those geniuses can claim it was a typo.

He said that? HaHaHaHa!!! I still like X-play though, despite their hate for anime and dis on comicbook characters.

Well, the movies ain't canon, EXCEPT, if you count the Garlic Jr. story, you ough to take movie 1, "Dead Zone", into account.

Then, some of the movies could always be said to have taken place in the anime's timeline. For instance, movies 5 and 6, featuring Coola, could happen in either the universe where Goky dies of a heart dicease, or the one where he sacrifices himself to save Earth from an exploding Cell. Movie 9 could easily take place immediately after Trunks eliminated Cell in his time, as he was already preparing himself to go back and tell them of the Androids' deaths. Movi 13 could have taken place, between Buu's defeat and before the anime's final three episodes.

The other movies can always be considered, as taking place alternate timelines, probaly caused by Trunks' constant time-travel-meddling.

So there you have it... All movies could've happened. But only if you really want them to.

Phenomenol and jplaya2023 thinks otherwise.

The reason?

"AT's involvement makes it canon."

You wouldn't believe how many pages were wasted to correct that.

dude get over it, the anime is canon. AT constructed the storyline outside the manga, created new characters, scenes, fights, etc... Everything had to go through AT

The anime is not canon.

Manga is the original source material.

The anime is only an adaption.

It's no more as canon as the DCAU, or the comic movie adaptions.

The Question

....they're not?

DB and DBZ originated as a manga.

The anime is an adaption of the manga.

Saying that the DB and DBZ anime 'is canon' is like saying that the Spider-Man TAS and X-Men TAS series are canon, for example.

As I've stated 1,000,000 times before in the Daizenshuu EX forums and in the MFG Forums- Toei Ltd. made the anime. Toriyama-sensei admitted in the Shonen Jump (Japanese Edition) that he almost never watched the anime. About the only thing he did see was the Burdock special, and he eventually made part of that canon because he enjoyed it. The other films and anime filler/ anime in general had little input on his part. To my knowledge he designed Cooler and Broli for their feature films (Broli with a tail that was eventually removed), as well as some designs such as for Pan on GT. That was the near-limit of his input. If you don't believe that or want more info on it feel free to go to Daizenshuu EX for translated interview snippings, but the truth still stands- from a design input he had little to do with the adaption of his manga. The actual frequency he was asked for input was so minimal that Toei Animation frequently got colorations on his characters wrong. Piccolo's pink muscles is an excellent example, as is the yellow Super Saiyan aura (a mistake made in Movie 4 using an early Super Saiyan sketch from Toriyama-sensei). For more on the continuity errors compare the anime adaption to Super Dragon Ball Z (an adaption of the manga).

So, no- he did not create the anime. He gave the rights to do so to Toei Ltd., which as a company has long since stated that the Dragon Ball series will not be continued further past the failure of GT even though they still maintain exclusivity rights to the anime itself.

Its the same thing.

Umm...no it's not. It would be as if I created a character and gave someone the rights to make a cartoon on it. I did create it, but ultimately what they do with it is stipulated from the getgo. Toriyama-sensei never really exercised an interest in making the anime a tailored cut of the manga. Hence the continuity issues I discussed. So all this boils down to is his allowance of the animation company to televise an adaption of his manga. It doesn't automatically render it canon. That would be like saying what happens in his comedy Neko Majin Z is DBZ canon just because it uses DBZ characters. The material is there, but not the intent to tie it into continuity.
