This time period was somewhat of a renaissance for comics, some good, some bad. Many artists and writers came up during this time, but not always for the better. Some of my favorite cliches from this time are:

The overexaggerated tits -

This was a staple of the 1990's comic scene.

Characters that were basically named and looked like giant death machines -

They just look like pain, don't they?

Yeah, that was pretty common. I liked the "grim and gritty"phase where every single character had a "dark"and horrible past. not a single one of these cats ever came from good homes, If they where rich, daddy didn't love them, éveryone had some sort of "they took everything from me, even those moits towellettes I used to clean my forehead...and now....someone has to PAY!!!"
mentality.
amusing as it was, it got old realllly quick.

Unnecessary and never-even-used costume accessories, namely bandoliers and pouches. Not to mention the total disregard for human anatomy when it came to the size of one's shoulders.

And the funny thing is that now, video games have fallen into the same trend as comics did ten years ago. Compare these guys:

To these guys:

And tell me they're not the same damn thing.

People always have clenched fists on covers. I blame Rob Liefield.

I'm proud to say I still have some 90's glow-in-the-dark covers.

Characters with spandex and form fitting uniforms wearing bulky jackets over them (Rogue and Gambit).

The Question

Trenchcoats. Everyone had trenchcoats. Funny thing is, that's the one 90s cliche that I like and fall into myself. Whenever I'm thinking up a new character, odds are they'll be wearing some kind of trenchcoat in my head.

I think the 1990's was comics worst decade.

I think the 1990's was comics worst decade.

It averaged out. While the 90s gave of Liefeld and that crap, it also gave us:

I think I'll let The Question speak for me on this matter

the early 90's mainstream sucked. There were excellent books that just didnt' sell 8 million copies and appear on the cover of Wizard every month that were also coming out

I'd also like to add James Robinson's Starman and Golden Age to that list of kickass s**t to come out of the 90's.

Though this goes in with exaggerated tits, the concept of the "bad girl" originated during this time frame as well. Not a whole lot of them currently in comics, but they still exist.

Basically you bought Image Comics during that time if you were just angry, or you wanted to jerk off. Everything about them was just so aggressive. I didn't think it was possible for art to be angry, but there you go.

there were a handful of gems, notably the oft-cited MAXX by Sam Keith, and highly underrated and all but forgotten Shaman's Tears by Mike Grell

I enjoyed Grell's Green Arrow run.

Pupilless eyes. Every uber-kewl character had to have them.
