When they had ups and downs the downs were replaced with a new cast and group of writers. They are dragging it out. The host selection for the most part for the past two seasons have been good, previous ones were 'what if we were on MTV', its the writing.

SNL started going down when Adam McKay quit and wasn't there for the new season in 2001.

But Alec Baldwin should have his own sketch comedy show.

I don't know. I doubt it will be so easily cancelled. The show is an institution like Cyclops said. Its like saying, "NBC will one day cancel Today or Tonight Show." The show is an institution by this point and it won't be easily cancelled. I think NBC will rather experiment with different ideas instead of cancelling it.
