Love this show. I throw their conclusions in people's faces all the time. Like when someone tells me to turn my cell phone off at the gas pump. Or when some bonehead tries to tell me that putting the tailgate down on my truck actually increases my gas mileage. HAHA....Mythbusters proved you wrong. Sucker!

The cellphone thing is not necessarily bogus. It might be due to static electricity as the person moves the cellphone around their face while talking, which Mythbusters didn't explore. There have been situations across the US where the person caught fire while pumping gas while talking on a cellphone.

OK, but that's not what the myth was about. It was weather or not the operation, ringing, dialing, etc. of a phone would cause a fire. You could rub a balloon on your face, or a cloth, or anything else and "mabye" get a spark from static electricity and cause a fire. So that's a moot point.

None of those situations have been "proven" to be a result of the person using the cell phone. They just coincidentally happen to be on the phone. There have been far more fires started where a phone wasn't involved.

It's more dangerous to get back in your car and get out and touch the pump than it is to use a cellphone. Still doesn't mean I would use a phone at the pump, but I'm not too concerned about it.

And they were right in saying that women are far more likely to be involved in a fire at the pump because of getting back in their cars. I see women always getting back in their cars, and getting out again without touching the sides of the car (to discharge static). Guys tend to just stand around. The warnings on the tanks even say stand next to your vehicle, do not get back in. But how many people actually read those since the print is so small and they're always too low to read?

How many people read instructions, period?

When was the last time you read an instruction booklet on a game, computer, cell phone, or any other electronic or mechanical device?

In a future episode their going to tackle the myth of what happens when you shoot a bullet into the air, as well as the vertical bullet myth (if you shoot a bullet straight up, it will fall straight back down and kill you). Adam said they were able to get some great and surprising results.

I have to say I can't believe there isn't a thread for this show yet. I know it is not as thrilling or suspensful as your average sitcom or drama shows like desperate housewives, lost or cops. But damn this is one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.

So what has been your favorite mythbuster episode so far? Or what have you been dissapointed with? Any myths you would like to see Adam and Jamie bust?

The bullets falling back to Earth one was nice. I was glad to see they finally put that one to rest. The jail break one with the salsa I was extremely surprised by, if you have the know how and some salsa and a light in your cell, you can be free in about a month or so. Pretty sweet for all of those guys locked up

I was a little bumbed with the whole splitting an arrow myth, that sucked but oh well what are you going to do right?

I remember an episode where they did an experiment to determine if microscopic faeces would stick to the bristles on your toothbrush. They placed several used toothbrushes on all corners of the bathroom. They even had a control-specimen: a brand-new unused toothbrush.

They've discovered that ALL of the toothbrushes had microscopic faeces on the bristles no matter where the brushes are placed in the bathroom, INCLUDING the control-specimen, within 24 hours.

And what I fould humourous was that they actually regretted conducting the experiment and commented something like some things are better left unknown.

Spidey-Bat

I watched Mythbusters for a while,i told my father about the Vodka myths but he did not belive their results.Old world thought never dies, but i prefered when the show only had Adam and Jamie.I dont really like the others that now do the myths with them.

Love the show too. Lots of great episodes, I think one of my favorites was the jail break with salsa. Where Adam actually increased the mass of the bar while Jaimie broke thru, and then they tried the Jackie Chan pee stained silk trick and it was splashing around. Actually I missed the new one and it's repeating in 13 mins, glad this thread popped up to remind me :) (been an insomniac lately, can't get to sleep at night anymore).

I'll toss in a few Kari pics tho I found quick -

Just watched the cellphone on an airplane episode, and the helium raft one. That helium raft one had me rollin' at the end, funniest episode yet IMO.

When they started to get the raft to lift, but cut one side of the counter weights too soon and the raft started to tip. Then Adam started yelling as he fell off the top and then started slipping through the cracks, and as he was hanging from that net like all dignity had just been stripped from him. That already had me laughing, but when they started cutting the tubes and the helium filled up the room real quick and they all had the high pitch voices, and Kari was taking it serious but u can tell Adam wanted to bust out laughing.

They really didn't do anything special, but was entertaining.

They shouldn't bother with testing Hollywood type stunts. Such a waste of time.

Still a fun show though

03-05-2007, 11:35 AM
Oh, it's fun watching the Hollywood stunts disproven. I especially liked the episode where they tried shooting a car and getting it to blow up, or the one where they tried to do the General Lee jump and showed that even if the driver was able to walk away after it the car would never move again.

Frankly, between the A-Team and MacGuyver they could problem get a million or so episodes.

I'm always tempted to send in my Hubby's myth that leaving paper / plastic over the vent of a heating duct will cause it to catch fire. (The heat is never above 22C in our house, as far as I know, paper doesn't spontaneously combust at 22C).

Did anyone else catch Discovery's Spoof Show this weekend. The number of spoofs about Mythbusters was great.

Yeah, there's no way that it's going to catch on fire at 22 degrees.

The myth is more that the paper will keep absorbing heat faster than it can lose it. So it will get hotter and hotter until in ignites.

But a sheet of paper isn't known for holding onto heat very well...

I'm not that big a fan of the girl replacing Kari right now, it feels like she's acting too much, but whatever.

TheCorpulent1

I've been watching from the beginning after catching some of the marathon during Thanksgiving, so I haven't seen many of the recent episodes. The last one I saw was the one with the possible cures for seasickness. Poor Adam and Grant.

Speaking of Grant, as cool as Scottie was, I'm glad Grant came along. Tory's great at building stuff and Kari's very creative, but it felt like the Build Team couldn't really stand on its own two feet until Grant came along with his very technical knowledge of practically everything. I noticed that Adam and/or Jamie would turn up for just about all of the Kari/Tory/Scottie myths at some point, yet that got dialed way down not too long into the Kari/Tory/Grant myths. Hell, Grant actually pops in to help with some of Adam and Jamie's myths from time to time.

StrainedEyes
12-23-2009, 07:57 PM
Recently, Kari, Grant, and Tory seem to be doing more interesting myths than Jamie and Adam, at least more interesting to watch.

You're right though, that team did not come together until Grant came along. The show was all about Adam and Jamie, and then it was about them and their helpers, and then it split into two teams when the K/G/T team came along and showed they could handle themselves. I do miss the joint myths though. Whenever they merge, like the Pirate episode, it's always a lot of fun.

But yeah, Kari left to have a baby and will be back eventually, and the girl replacing her just seems fake to me. It doesn't ruin the show, but I eagerly await Kari's return.

There is an all day Mythbusters marathon on Christmas, and the 28th.

Wonder if Jessi (the new girl) will stay after Kari's return. Otherwise, it must suck coming onto the show with the firm knowledge you're just a temporary replacement until the person they actually want gets back.

Was she hired from outside specifically as onscreen talent? Maybe she's someone who worked in the shop already and she agreed to fill in for Kari. They've pulled random people from the shop and research departments onto the show from time to time.
