Does anyone else find themselves getting incredibly annoyed when they hear people who are constantly using "filler phrases?" We discussed these in my Language and Culture class, and when people say things such as "you know what I'm sayin'?", "you know what I mean?", "um", "like", etc reveals a lack of confidence in what you're saying.
Sometimes when people are giving class presentations I find myself counting the number of times people say "um." So annoying.

Teen girls and even some adult women are guilty of the "like" filler. Or instead of saying that he or she said something, they'll say, "and he was like, and she was like, etc." Off topic, but what also gets me is when females talk in a higher or lower inflection at certain points in a sentence where it has no bearing, like Stewie said about Brian's girl on Family Guy.:o

Another one that sets my head on fire is "basically".
When I worked at a movie theater, this in-bred, Danny DeVito-looking retarded Mormon girl...somehow she learned the word "basically" and, I guess she thought it made her sound smart.
Her till was $20 short one day, the boss asked her what the deal was.
She goes, "Whull...BAYsickly, during that last rush I baysickly got really busy so basysickly I think I left some money on the counter by accident when I had to go back and change the Coke, so baysickly I think someone stole it."
I'm like, "You know what? Challenge me! Let's try to move beyond the "basics", 'cause I think I can "keep up" if we get into any complex ideas, compound words, analogies, stuff like that."

I'd find a person that actually pauses and says nothing as opposed to using the fillers more intellectual. In interviews they'll sit and ponder what they want to say.

I don't say any of those, but I do loose the word sometimes and end up doing the 'thing thing thingy!' routene until I remember it again. And I stutter a little, which doesn't help.
It really annoys me when people just say 'I don't get it' as their default response to everything. If you don't get it by now, get out of the class cuz you ain't gonna.

I found something that gives filler phrases MAJOR competition:
This one girl at my job, instead of filler phrases, gives the most long, awkward, lingering pauses EVER when she's talking to someone. She's a sweet girl, but I'm not sure that she's "all there." I feel bad, but lately it's been driving me crazy!!!

Wait. You complain when someone says something to say something... and then complain when they don't say anything instead?
This thread is proof that women are just crazy.

This is more than her just not saying something, though. I can literally see her brain working to think of what she is going to say in regards to whatever story she is telling at the time.

Back when I was in high school, I was a teacher's aid for a geometry class. The teacher I aided was a relatively young guy who had just gotten his teaching credentials, so he tended to use a lot of slang while teaching class. That was fine, but he ended a lot of his sentences with "right?"
"These next few weeks, we're gonna be going over parabolas, right? There are a few different equations we can use to graph a parabola, right? Turn to page 75, and you'll see the same equation I wrote on the board, right?"
I'm sitting in the corner of the class playing an NES Punch-Out ROM on a computer (turns out a lot of students found out how to sneak emulators and a ton of ROMs onto the school's network) thinking, "God damn, really? Is he gonna end every sentence with-- okay, clearly the answer is yes."
He made up for it by being some sort of genius math wizard, though. Of course, most people who decide to teach high school math tend to be.

This is my weakness in class presentations. I get nervous so I start with the fillers like "um" and "ah" and all that jazz. One of my professor's wrote on a comment card that I did fantastic, great volume, voice, etc...but that I need to stop saying "um" so much.

I was trying to make a conscious effort to not "ummm" during my speech class. I knew my (really hot) professor was counting how many times I said it during my speeches. She even videotaped our speeches so we could see all our little mannerisms that we had no idea we were mannerisming (I moved my hands when I gave a speech as if I were rapping).
So one day, I was speeching and was REALLY focusing on not "umm"ing... and when we reviewed the videotape... it turned out I was "O"-facing instead of "umm"ing. :o

Ah that wouldn't annoy me, it's a sign of nerves and a lack of confidence in public speaking just as much as it can be sign of not knowing what you are talking about. So I'd feel sorry for them more than anything else.
If I'm caught flat footed I can say "um" a lot. It's a disaster when it happens in interviews. :csad:

When I'm speaking with someone and they abuse the "know what I'm saying" ,"know what I mean", etc. I interrupt and answer them. "Yes" or "No" or "Not really, but hope you're going to explain it to me". When they tell me something was "like xyz" when they really mean is WAS "xyz" after they finish I'll ask them if it was like it or if it was it. Tends to tick people off. I haven't figured out a really good one for the "ummmms". I tried saying "OK" whenever someone said "ummmmm" and it didn't really work to well.
I take a different tactic with my 7 year old daughter. If she starts spouting such drivel I hold up my hands and lift a finger counting out each bit of nonsense she speaks. That seems to work in training her to speak.

I don't find it annoying personally. I think that its just the way that language evolves (or devolves depending on how you look at it). Nah'meen? :p

My roommate does the long ummm's all the time when he is telling a story. It annoys the **** out of me. I'd rather you just be silent and think through what you are about to say. A story that should take 10 seconds takes 5 minutes. It's maddening. Not to mention half the time he is telling me a story he has already told me 2 or 3times already.

I just think that when people try and talk about something, they haven't thought it all the way through, they seem to get spit out what's in their head. so they say like umm,ya know as fillers while they think. Another reason to think before you speak.
