As far as I know, there isn't one yet, and if there is, the search function doesn't work, so sue me.
I like Wicked, Beauty and the Beast, and Les Miz. If you like a musical, talk about it.
Simple, right? Begin.

A musical thread yeah!
I love Wicked, we will rock you, Mary poppins, Phantom, Beauty and the Beast, Mamma Mia, Chicago, Women in White and more, too many to remember.
But at the moment I love Wicked more then anyother one.

You know, I've never really liked the Act II dress. It's too frilly, and the corset changes colors.

really, I liked it, I like her hat, was funny when she walks into the ball and she starts dancing lol.
What is this feeling is one of my favourite songs, its funny and a good song.

I went to NYC on a class trip in HS o so many years ago. We saw Singin In The Rain and 42nd Street. I was so amazingly impressed by Singin in the Rain,I ranted out about it for a few years and was hoping to catch it in Atlanta while I was there. They brought their own water since Ga was going through a water shortage.
Spring Awakening is awesome,if you're going up to NYC it's really worth seeing. http://www.springawakening.com/ Try not to get seats on stage if you're not into being so close to the intense sex and masturbation scenes. :csad: I'm going up to see it again in Feb.
I saw Beauty and Beast a few years back that was pretty awesome.
But my favorite of all time is The Lion King, when the actors came out all majestic in their costumes and the music just sank me in,yeah the tears welled up. :O

Spring Awakening seems a little too intense for me. I don't think I'd ever like a musical based around so much sex.

Yeah I was suppose to sit in the stage not knowing what was in store, luckily I was late and had to sit in the general audience. Whew.
The music is great and the cast is so young which also has me super impressed.

In terms of quality, no. I've never actually seen the musical either, and have only seen the movie once or twice (I lost it :cmad: ), though I've heard many, many people say that the movie doesn't even come close to doing the stage version justice.

I actually heard the opposite. They say it worked better on film than on stage. And after seeing both, I have to agree. It works better on film. Plus Mimi sucks on all the stage versions I have seen.

Hmm. Interesting. I need to see it again. And I'll definitely see it on stage if I get the chance.

Then what you need is a serious musical. Listen to something from Les Mis, preferably Bring Him Home, Who Am I? or The Confrontation (is that what it's called?) and you'll see that there are more touching sides to musical theatre than just cheesy, upbeat popish numbers.

i saw Rent on film first, and then i saw it on stage, which is the only play i've ever seen. i think both are equally great.
they can convey some things better on film than the play, and i really liked how they had most of the original cast in it, and used props from the original play and things from the late Johnathan Larson's home.
the play was also great. it was uptempo and high energy and i really liked how simplistic the backgrounds and how great they worked. it seemed like all they did was set up tables for la vie boheme and that was pretty much it.
i wish i could see dreamgirls on stage, like a dvd of when it was on broadway back when it won the tony's.
i bought the book wicked, but have yet to read it, is it worth looking thru?
Charlie No-One
12-31-2006, 03:39 PM
The book is great.
Alexia Dark
12-31-2006, 03:42 PM
But there's also that element of 'they're singing out of nowhere' that's more realistic on a stage.
Whether or not to read the Wicked book is complicated. It's a very long, often boring, and very quirky book, but it deserves to be read by every fan of the musical.

I hope Johnny Depp surprises me. I can imagine the tone of his voice and the creepy look in his eye behind the barber's chair without even needing to try. I hope he brings something unexpected to the role, rather than a reprise of Secret Window in a barber shop.
Will it be a musical? Or just a film adaptation?

Alexia Dark

I hope he has hidden talent and learns really fast. One of the biggest complaints I hear about the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera is that Gerard Butler's voice wasn't good enough for the Phantom, though I disagree; he just wasn't given enough time for voice training. I personally think he has the sexiest singing voice I've ever heard, he just needs to work on it some more, to sort of smooth it out. I also think that the voices of the main characters were the best things about the film. The direction and the cinematography, and even some of the sets were what was wrong with it. And the cut lyrics and changed lines and so forth.
Ok, a heck of a lot was wrong with it, but I blame it on Schumacher.

A secret: I've never seen the stage version of Phantom either, but something about the movie just didn't feel right to me. Especially once I found out about a cut song that would've made a huge difference (No One Would Listen).
No, I haven't seen Dreamgirls, but I will if I get the chance, or I'll at least rent it at some point.

Well yeah there was a lot more depth I would say and more school life with them growing up, also did you think the show made some good changes like the end and the connections to the lion, scarecrow etc, but there was this part where I got bored which was when Elphie stayed at this house or castle when she first made her broom fly, I found that bit a dull.
But the stage ending made me smile she didn't deserve to die, and when Fiyero came to get her and they walked off, and when Glinda took charge and put Madam away and the Wizard left. All though it was sad as they couldn't tell Glinda that Elphie was alive

Really, it made me sad knowing that she isn't really wicked and stuff and I thought she didn't deserve it, so the stage ending made me smile and feel happier and the fact that you notice how most shows end happy as well lol.
No one likes a sad ending.
Reminds me a Producer song lol.

'Meshed better'?
She just suddenly died in an accident, almost out of nowhere. Just 'I'll save you!', BLAM! and she's gone with no resolution.
Charlie No-One
01-01-2007, 03:39 PM
That is what the sequel was for. Also, the stage ending had them leaving Oz through the Deadly Desert. In the Oz mythology, that is impossible because if you touch the sand you die. The book respected what was written before it.
Don't get me wrong though, I loved the show.

I know Aren't they in a kitchean and Dorthey comes in and spills water on her by accident, I was like thats it, I was like that sucked lol, thats why I liked the show when she came up I was like yeah!! she was good and didn't deserve to die, and plus water doesn't kill her, was a rumore lol, unlike the book, but yeah I liked the show more.

My Mom loves musicals, so I grew up listening to a lot of Broadway. In high school I was Lewis in Pippin, one of the ball players in Damn Yankees, Motel in Fiddler on the Roof, and the Baker in Into the Woods. Right now I'm working on a theater degree with a music minor, and hoping to become an actor.
And yet I don't like listening to musicals nowadays.

Thanks, but I agree. Kerry Ellis took over the role now shes gone.
As Kerry is great I saw her in We Will Rock You and Les Mis but her being green she doesn't look that good it makes her look greasy and also she puts on this terrible English accent (Kerry is scottish) and its sounds just to fake as well. I think she should just do an American Accent really.
Oh another musical I love is Mary Poppins, and its better then the film and funnier, the kids are actaully annoying (unlike the film where there good) Mary Poppins has like a dark side which is funny, shes so nasty to the kids and I love it.
I love the Practically Perfect as well.
I saw it when it first opened in London Laura Michelle Kelly was Mary Poppin she was amazing I meet her as well lol Shes a cool person.

And I love Idina and Butz and everyone in the cast.....I just think Wicked is an over-glamourized stupid show. It's reall really not that great. I'm also a big Baum purist, and I don't know why they couldn't just adapt one of his backstories for the musical. Because now I have people in chorus telling me about the history of The Wizard of Oz according to Wicked, and I have to set them straight with the REAL backstory.
Hate it.

Well, he's Trekkie Monster, and you're Kate Monster.
Kate Monster:
Right.
Princeton:
You're both Monsters.
Kate Monster:
Yeah.
Princeton:
Are you two related?
Kate Monster:
What?! Princeton, I'm surprised at you! I find that racist!
Princeton:
Oh, well, I'm sorry! I was just asking!
Kate Monster:
Well, it's a touchy subject.
No, not all Monsters are related.
What are you trying say, huh?
That we all look the same to you?
Huh, huh, huh?
Princeton:
No, no, no, not at all. I'm sorry,
I guess that was a little racist.
Kate Monster:
I should say so. You should be much more
careful when you're talking about the
sensitive subject of race.
Princeton:
Well, look who's talking!
Kate Monster:
What do you mean?
Princeton:
What about that special Monster School you told me about?
Kate Monster:
What about it?
Princeton:
Could someone like me go there?
Kate Monster:
No, we don't want people like you-
Princeton:
You see?!
You're a little bit racist.
Kate Monster:
Well, you're a little bit too.
Princeton:
I guess we're both a little bit racist.
Kate Monster:
Admitting it is not an easy thing to do...
Princeton:
But I guess it's true.
Kate Monster:
Between me and you,
I think
Both:
Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgments
Based on race.
Princeton:
Now not big judgments, like who to hire
or who to buy a newspaper from -
Kate Monster:
No!
Princeton:
No, just little judgments like thinking that Mexican
busboys should learn to speak goddamn English!
Kate Monster:
Right!
Both:
Everyone's a little bit racist
Today.
So, everyone's a little bit racist
Okay!
Ethinic jokes might be uncouth,
But you laugh because
They're based on truth.
Don't take them as
Personal attacks.
Everyone enjoys them -
So relax!
Princeton:
All right, stop me if you've heard this one.
Kate Monster:
Okay!
Princeton:
There's a plan going down and there's only
one paracute. And there's a rabbi, a priest...
Kate Monster:
And a black guy!
Gary Coleman:
Whatchoo talkin' 'bout Kate?
Kate Monster:
Uh...
Gary Coleman:
You were telling a black joke!
Princeton:
Well, sure, Gary, but lots of people tell black jokes.
Gary Coleman:
I don't.
Princeton:
Well, of course you don't - you're black!
But I bet you tell Polack jokes, right?
Gary Coleman:
Well, sure I do. Those stupid Polacks!
Princeton:
Now, don't you think that's a little racist?
Gary Coleman:
Well, damn, I guess you're right.
Kate Monster:
You're a little bit racist.
Gary Coleman:
Well, you're a little bit too.
Princeton:
We're all a little bit racist.
Gary Coleman:
I think that I would
Have to agree with you.
Princeton/Kate Monster:
We're glad you do.
Gary Coleman:
It's sad but true!
Everyone's a little bit racist -
All right!
Kate Monster:
All right!
Princeton:
All right!
Gary Coleman:
All right!
Bigotry has never been
Exclusively white
All:
If we all could just admit
That we are racist a little bit,
Even though we all know
That it's wrong,
Maybe it would help us
Get along.
Princeton:
Oh, Christ do I feel good.
Gary Coleman:
Now there was a fine upstanding black man!
Princeton:
Who?
Gary Coleman:
Jesus Christ.
Kate Monster:
But, Gary, Jesus was white.
Gary Coleman:
No, Jesus was black.
Kate Monster:
No, Jesus was white.
Gary Coleman:
No, I'm pretty sure that Jesus was black-
Princeton:
Guys, guys...Jesus was Jewish!
Brian:
Hey guys, what are you laughing about?
Gary Coleman:
Racism!
Brian:
Cool.
Christmas Eve:
BRIAN! Come back here!
You take out lecycuraburs!
Princeton:
What's that mean?
Brian:
Um, recyclables.
Hey, don't laugh at her!
How many languages do you speak?
Kate Monster:
Oh, come off it, Brian!
Everyone's a little bit racist.
Brian:
I'm not!
Princeton:
Oh no?
Brian:
Nope!
How many Oriental wives
Have you got?
Christmas Eve:
What? Brian!
Princeton:
Brian, buddy, where you been?
The term is Asian-American!
Christmas Eve:
I know you are no
Intending to be
But calling me Oriental -
Offensive to me!
Brian:
I'm sorry, honey, I love you.
Christmas Eve:
And I love you.
Brian:
But you're racist, too.
Christmas Eve:
Yes, I know.
The Jews have all
The money
And the whites have all
The power.
And I'm always in taxi-cab
With driver who no shower!
Princeton:
Me too!
Kate Monster:
Me too!
Gary Coleman:
I can't even get a taxi!
All:
Everyone's a little bit racist
It's true.
But everyone is just about
As racist as you!
If we all could just admit
That we are racist a little bit,
And everyone stopped being
So PC
Maybe we could live in -
Harmony!
Christmas Eve:
Evlyone's a ritter bit lacist!

Well started watching Rent, but got kicked off watching as my parents wanted to watch TV and I like watching films in the biggest tv in our house which is the one in the living room, jeez they wanted to watch Big Brother at first they where like Rent looks crap and they heard some songs and where like sounds good.
But yeah so far its been good up to the part where there is a riot at Maureen is it, gig and its cool I like the seasons Of love song and the one about Rent.
And the song Angel done was funny,
Also the Muarenn tango song was really funny I loved that part.
The moon song was weird lol.

i really liked rent. my fave songs were light my candle and seasons of love. i wont ruin it by including my faves from the second half of the movie.
the second part is the better part of the movie i think. there's more depth. the first part is good too, but it seems like there is more in the second half.
let me know how you like it. and after it ends, watch the alternate ending and see which you prefer

I love the Tango Maureen. I'm actually pretty much a sucker for any musical song that's tango-themed....They're just so awesome.
I sang "One Song Glory" for an audition once. I did pretty damn good, best I've ever sang probably......Didn't get the part though. Because I'm **** at dancing, and I was auditioning for "CATS", haha.

one song glory is a good one. i could hear that on the radio. i think that's why i liked rent so much. the songs and lyrics are great and they sound like stuff you could hear anywhere.

you know to me, the broadway and film versions arent that different, because all but 2 people are in the film.
Daphne Rubin Vega was Mimi in the play, and while she's ok, i prefer Rosario's vocals on some of the songs, particularly Out Tonight. She was pregnant so she wasn't available to do the movie.
Freddie (forget last name), the original Joanne felt she looked too old for the part and didn't want to reprise it. Tracie Thoms who plays Joann in the movie was Renthead and auditioned for the play many times, so I'm glad they cast someone who knew the role and appreciated this.
I learned most of this from the extras on the dvd. If you can find a copy that has them, check it out. The documentary on Johnathan Larsen was poignant and great.
The deleted scenes have a couple songs that were excluded, and the alternate ending i mentioned. Some people picks sides over which they prefer, but I like both endings.
the movie ending makes it seems like a real movie, while the alternate ending brings them back to the stage singing Seasons of Love with the empty spot where Angel was, and then he comes across the stage slowly, resuming his spot for the end. its really sweet when his hand lingers on collins'.
i think they say on the commentary that they they used the original ending instead of the alternate one because the alt ending pays respect to the play, but it makes the movie seem like a play, like none of it happened. the movie ending leaves it open

So I went to a funeral recently and I was suprised at the song that was played. I bawled like a baby. Here it is.
ELPHABA
I'm limited:
Just look at me - I'm limited
And just look at you -
You can do all I couldn't do, Glinda
So now it's up to you
(spoken) For both of us
(sung) Now it's up to you:
GLINDA
I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you:
Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good
ELPHABA
It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend:
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you:
GLINDA
Because I knew you:
BOTHI have been changed for good
ELPHABA
And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done you blame me for
GLINDA
But then, I guess we know
There's blame to share
BOTH
And none of it seems to matter anymore
GLINDA ELPHABA
Like a comet pulled Like a ship blown
From orbit as it Off it's mooring
Passes a sun, like By a wind off the
A stream that meets Sea, like a seed
A boulder, half-way Dropped by a
Through the wood Bird in the wood
BOTH
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
I do believe I have been changed for the better?
GLINDA
And because I knew you:
ELPHABA
Because I knew you:
BOTH
Because I knew you:
I have been changed for good.

That's a tough one.
Every play has a showstopper. You know, that one song that really stays with you after the show is over, and the one that's always advertised with the play. But the great thing about Phantom is that it really has several showstoppers. The collective work of songs is just SO good that it's hard to choose.
But the songs I like the best are Music of the Night, Point of No Return, All I Ask of You, and Masquerade. My favorite parts of the show are the Mirror (when we first hear the Phantom), the All I Ask of You reprise (Phantom on the angel) and the end (Down Once More...).
Those are probably my favorite parts of the movie as well, though they are not as effective in that film as on stage. I can't leave out the Overture, because every time I see the show it gives me chills.
If you enjoyed the movie, you'll really love the show.

Yeah, I saw him 3 times back when he was Phantom. I really enoyed his performance because he had such a strong, commanding voice, yet it could be so soothing and gentle as well, which is exactly how the Phantom's voice needs to be. You can see the power of his voice in the Youtube videos I posted. He's definitely one of the best I've seen.
The reason Gerard Butler's voice didn't work in the movie version was because he sort of had the commanding part down, but he really lacked the gentle, beautiful aspect that is what makes Christine get involved in all of this mess in the first place. Also, it didn't help that the guy just screamed the notes he couldn't hit. Now, I don't blame this on him, because he really did the best he could with no prior training, but he was just miscast.

I'm so sorry. My chorus has to perform a song from it for the annual Arts Celebration thing. I'm also probably gonna be in it over the summer. I'm just accepeted it as in inevitability.

I agree. I tried so hard to like Gerry's voice. He had his moments, but as you said there needs to be some gentle and softeness to the Phantom's voice. I loved the film, but looking back at these videos on stage and listening to the original cast album, there were missed opportunities. For example, I wish the Phantom's mask was a little bigger, the disfigurement was better, and Schumacher should have used a darker color scheme for the Phantom's lair. I always imagined this black/blue color scheme for the lair, but the gold filter was okay i guess. The list goes on, but i make so many excuses for it so i can forget about the mistakes in my mind.
Another good Phantom which everyone in London praises is John Owen Jones aka JOJ. He has a nice soft, crystal voice.

Yeah. As for what it's like, it always depends on who directed it and what they were going for. But the one I saw was a small cast with an equally smaller set; 2 portable scrims and a platform, which later gets a barber's chair. Since it was such a small set, the actors were not that far from you. I was in 2nd row, and Sweeney, Anthony and I'm sure other ensemble were inches from the first row.
But as for Story, it's pretty simple with a little bit of complications, but that's usual in a Sondheim show. The music is really great, but as a nother Sondheim trait, you have to really listen to the words to understand the characters.

Yeah, the Phantom movie had the oppurtunity to be so great. All of the elements from the play seem perfect for a movie, and they have been in past films, but this film just seemed to miss the point. It really did.
I just wish they chose someone who had been in the play before to play the Phantom...someone with the experience and range. It would have helped the film greatly, IMO.

I saw Spring Awakening over the weekend. It has grown tremendously. The way the actors presented their characters, they have really owned their roles since the last time I saw them off Broadway in June.
I was much more emotional this time around. The audience was more responsive, folks returned to their seats after intermission. I recall a few people did not return when I saw it over the summer. It may have something to do with the lovin and minor nudity right before the break. :woot:
One senior lady had seats on the stage and she got a nice mooning, man that ass was pasty white but it sure was cute. :cwink:She actually came back for more. :wow:
Now when I listen to the soundtrack, 4-5xs a day, it just takes me back. *sigh* I'm going again.

"The World of Hans Christian Andersen"
Some really great music, and a real pschadelic edge to it -which is great if you like musicals.
Looks like a really old work -probably 60s or earlier; the picture quality is rather poor, but a great story, nevertheless.
Here's a few verses from one of the songs:
Soaring like zephyr where the robins fly
Up above the clouds so high
Flying in a manner that is fancy-free
In a cotton-candy sky

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber announced on his video blog that he will pen a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running musical in Broadway history.
In a taped message, the Tony-winning composer says, “I’ve made a decision today that I will do The Phantom of the Opera sequel. And I have met with a couple people today who have persuaded me to do it, who I will not reveal, but it’s a very exciting day for me. . . It’s going to be very exciting, and I can reveal that it will be set in New York.”
Lloyd Webber had previously written "The Heart Is Slow to Learn," a song for a Phantom sequel. That song was unveiled to the public at the televised London concert celebrating Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday. Kiri Te Kanawa performed the ballad. The composer later dropped the idea of the sequel and chose to collaborate on the musical The Beautiful Game.
At one point Lloyd Webber had been working on the Phantom sequel with writer Frederick Forsyth. When the sequel did not come to fruition, Forsyth later released the novel “The Phantom of Manhattan.” Lloyd Webber did not mention during his video statement whether the sequel would be based on the Forsyth work.
The winner of seven 1988 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Phantom of the Opera became the longest-running show in Broadway history on Jan. 9, 2006. It surpassed Cats' record-holding run of 7,485 performances. The musical at the Majestic Theatre recently celebrated its 19th birthday on Broadway Jan. 26.
The musical, based on the Gaston Leroux novel, has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is directed by Harold Prince. Lyrics are by Charles Hart (with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe) and the book is by Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

ok, this pisses me off!!! I've heard bad reviews about the Phantom of Manhattan novel. Why is Webber doing this? Completley destroying a beloved musical doing great on Broadway? If anything he should make a prequel!!! The original story has no where else to go for a sequel. Why not make a broadway show out of the book by Susan Kay? That would make the most sense. It would be the Phantom's "Wicked" if you will.

Yeah, after hearing this, I was outraged. I just don't understand why he's doing this to himself. It can't be for the money, because the guy doesn't need it. So why?!
Okay, the man has created some pretty successful musicals. We know that. But Phantom is his baby. His gem. The most successful musical ever produced. He has to realize that a sequel can never be has good, no matter how good it is. In fact, it will probably suck without the classic music and story, it'll get bad reviews, and close within months, only tarnishing the Phantom name.
I just don't like this at all. But in other news, I'm going to see Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular in July!!!

So, the Phantom trip is probably not happening... we need 13 more people, and I'm broke, so I can't go. I don't get paid until the end of the month, and the cheques are due just before then.
In other news, I'm auditioning for Les Mis: School Edition at my local professional theatre. It should be interesting. Also, I heard that the Musical Theatre Program at my school (which I LIVE for) is doing Into The Woods next year. I'm already sort of familiar with it. Oh, what kind of monologue to do... and what song for that matter. I want to play the Witch (haha, my fav. actress's dream role), but you see, my choir director, whom I have worked with for almost 2 years and know pretty well, might ot let me. He's convinced himself that I can only be a legit soprano and nothing but. It infuriates me. I showed him an audition peice for Les Mis that goes down to a low F and he's like 'that's too low for you'. How the hell would he know? I've never sang a song in his classes that goes that low. For people's information, I can comfortably go down to an E.
I'm really worried that he'll type-cast me and make me someone stupid... Rapunsel or chorus...

Who did you play in it last time? And what else is out there that you want to be in? Thats what you got to think of.

Well, the gals in that show are too wimpy... they have no spunk or spirit...
"Oh no, I'm in trouble, I need some man to rescue me"
bleh
I'ld rather be the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz - at least she had spirit (even if she did get herself killed by a kid who couldn't even keep control of a dog)

I saw it when it was off broadway at the Atlantic Theatre. It was still new on the scene and I think it was a bit much for some, including myself. There's some nudity and it's recommend for mature audiences,so no little kids. But the second time I saw it the audience was more receptive,I think the cast has really owned their characters. I was moved to tears the second around and much more laughter.

Full Story Description
SPRING AWAKENING takes its inspiration from one of literature’s most controversial masterpieces – a work so daring in its depiction of teenage self-discovery, it was banned from the stage and not performed in its complete form in English for nearly 100 years.
It’s Germany, 1891. A world where the grown-ups hold all the cards. The beautiful young Wendla explores the mysteries of her body, and wonders aloud where babies come from, till Mama tells her to shut it, and put on a proper dress.
Elsewhere, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy Moritz – a boy so traumatized by puberty he can’t concentrate on anything. Not that the Headmaster cares. He strikes them both and tells them to turn in their lesson.
One afternoon – in a private place in the woods – Melchior and Wendla meet by accident, and soon find within themselves a desire unlike anything they’ve ever felt.
As they fumble their way into one another’s arms, Moritz flounders and soon fails out of school. When even his one adult friend, Melchior’s mother, ignores his plea for help, he is left so distraught he can’t hear the promise of life offered by his outcast friend Ilse.
Naturally, the Headmasters waste no time in pinning the “crime” of Moritz’s suicide on Melchior and expel him. And soon Mama learns her little Wendla is pregnant. Now the young lovers must struggle against all odds to build a world together for their child.

A girl in my class went down to NY to audition for Spring Awakening last weekend. She apparently did very well, and might have a call back. I can't believe she actually did that. Go to another country for an audition, I mean. As much as I would love to run away to NY, that's not happening any time soon.
So I auditioned for Les Mis last week, and I got a callback for this Tuesday. Here's a funny story about this:
Another girl in my class, who had been in these 'highschool project' productions before, told me that people who were getting called back would be contacted on Monday night. Well, Monday night came and went. No call. So I got anxious and nervous and sad and wondered what the hell I did wrong (I had a conversation with the volunteer in charge of the auditionees; she told me I was 'fantastic, a power-house', so I know I didn't suck).
Then, frustrated but willing to swallow my pride, I decided to call and ask if I could work backstage. I called the admin. people, and all I said was "I auditioned for Les Mis, and I was wondering-" when the person forwarded me to someone. I was put on hold. Then the receptionist came back, asked me my name, and put me on hold again. She came back again and told me that I was on Sarah's (person in charge) list of people to call that night.
I explained to her that I had thought I wasn't getting a call, because I'd been told that all people chosen for callbacks would be contacted Monday night. She told me that with the last few people, the team needed more time... TO DISCUSS ROLES!!!
AHHHH!!!
So I talked to Sarah and got my callback! Yay! No matter what it takes, I have to blow them away. I know most of the music (at least for the female roles), and they didn't tell me to bring music, so I'm guessing we'll be tested on music from the show. I'll work on it all weekend.
Wish me luck!
I liked Mama Mia, was good.
I want HairSpray to come to the West End is was going to, but I got the sound track and its great, but looks like I'll be seeing the film first.

So, it went pretty well. I ended up not being given the music for any of the leads (I assume it was a favoritism thing... there was one girl up for Fantine who was absolutely horrible... I wanted to rip that sheet music out of her hand and belt it the way it should be in her ear).
We were divided into character and chorus groups, and I was one of the chorus people. They gave most of us a section of Do You Hear The People Sing, which was completely useless to me, because a) most of it was sung by a guy and b) it wasn't within a comfortable range for me. Hopefully they'll realize the mistake they made with their potential leads and begin calling up other choices...
Great to hear that you'll finally see Wicked! :)

I saw The Phantom of the Opera for the first time, finally, a few weeks ago in Toronto, and was definitely disappointed. Shrill as can be, and some really bad acting by every mentionable person except the Phantom. I actually left with a headache from all of the loud, overcompensating singing. But, on the upside, I was able to go home and watch the movie with a fresh perspective, and I appreciate it much more. I'd heard bad things about the movie in comparisan to the stage show, but I can confidently say that, at least with this cast, the movie was much better.
Anything by Weber makes me cringe, in all honestly.

With the right cast, seeing the Phantom on stage is 10x more fulfilling than watching the movie. I've seen it on Broadway seven times now, and I've watched the movie maybe a million, but it's nothing like the stage experience.
Now, I have been privaledged with seeing some great Phantoms, like Hugh Panaro and Howard McGillin, a couple of times. But nonetheless, the show is great.

If Little Mermaid does well in NY, it probably will. Disney just had their first Broadway flop with Tarzan, it's closing next week.
I've heard a few commercials for Little Mermaid, it sounds really good. From what I understand, the designs are going to make the theater look like it's underwater, and the actors are going to be moving around the stage on "heely" shoes to flow more like they were swimming.
There are also about 10 new songs--all by Alan Menken, who composed the original movie score with Howard Ashman. I can't remember who he's writing the new songs with now.
Sad to see Beauty & the Beast closing, though (Mermaid is moving into that theater). I saw it a few weeks ago and it's in great shape.
