View Full Version : Can you swim?

This came up in college today while I was talking to a bunch of friends. We got into talking about sports, and I mentioned casually somewhere along the line that I can't swim. They were all totally horrified by the fact that I can't even float on my back in the water...
So, I've been roped into going swimming with them tonight... and it made me curious. Can you swim? Am I really that unusual?

No, I unfortunately cannot.
I am a free style swimmer, when i was 10 i went to a pool party, before i learned how to swim. I leapt off the diveing board, and found out I could swim while in the deep section.

I love to free dive, scuba dive and everything that comes with. I can free dive to about 50 ft but that's when the water pressure begins to become too heavy on my chest. I love to photograph mangrove snapper, grouper, amberjack, pompano, baitfish, spanish mackerel, and other marine life such as stone crabs, & sea urichens.

Nope I can't swim, I nearly always drowned when I was younger when I would go to the local swimming holes with my family members. Even with a life jacket or inner tube I still didn't do that well.
Growing up I still never managed to learn how to ride a bike but I sure got a lot of scrapes & bruises from attempting to ride one. I would always get so far & then I was toppling over. If I had kept at it then I would have surely got the hang of it though.

NCAA Division 1 swimmer right here.
Been able to swim since I was around 6, swam my 3000m when I was 10. Im currently teaching my nan to swim and she has been afraid of water all her life. but after around 10 hours of lessons she can now swim backstroke easily and swim a length doing breaststroke. She just hasnt got the power at the moment to swim more than that without getting tired but its a major achievement for her and im glad I could help :)

My parents made sure I was a good swimmer, the only problem is I always forget how when I'm in water I can't see through.
So I only swim in pools or clear beaches. No lakes, no ponds, no dirty water, no green water, nu-uh.

I just got back from the pool. My god. I feel dead. 25 meters end to end. I did ten lengths at the slowest damn beginner paddle in the pool. I think several people nearly died laughing. This is a sea town. I was getting overtaken by little kids.
I might do it again. Its not like running- it didn't make my chest hurt or do my knees in. Might do my knees some good actually...

Cool K. It is a great way to exercise and take stress OFF the joints. The only thing you may want to do if it becomes a habit is to get the new style of ear plugs. It prevents "swimmer's ear" which is a major pain in the butt.
The new kind are form fitting and keep a great seal. Glad you enjoyed it.

Uhhh... that sounds nasty. Does walking home in the cold with damp ears do anything. Just a hypothetical question, you understand...
I'm heading for dangerously underweight, cuz I've let the weight-gain diets slip of late, so it might help with that too. My hips and knees have been literally falling out of joint recently because of the lack of muscle I'm suffering.

Nope.
Just an issue of the water not completely draining out of the ear.
Swimming is one of the things that I truly enjoy. There is something about swimming underwater that is very cool ...
One thing you may want to do is put some tissues in your ears (looks dopey but) it will ensure that they are dry.
Keep it up though! Great fun and so much better for knees etc. :yay:

I can swim, but I haven't swam in in 7 years.
The last time I swam was for a swimming class in college. I earned an A, and I didn't even exert myself. While everyone else was working hard, I did a lazy backstroke.
My roomie chided me for it since I didn't even lose a pound. I told him "The human body is 70% water, so I only have to do 30% of the work"

I've spent a fair bit of time in an isolation tank... although they called it a float-therapy tank. They were doing psycological research up at the university a few months back, so I volunteered. I spent four hours in one, and they got worried and ruined the whole thing by asking if I was ok. Apparently most people freak out after about fifteen minutes. It should be made into a therapy for people who struggle with noise and bright lights.
It was pretty soothing being in the pool. What I didn't have kids paddling past me.

Monday through Friday 2-4PM is an 8000 (a thousand is 40 laps of a standard short-course pool) yard practice, followed by an hour of running on monday wednesday and friday, and an hour of weights on tuesday and thursday.
Saturday is a 2 hour and 15 minute 9000 yard practice, followed by an hour of weights then an hour of running and abs.
Monday, wednesday, and friday we have mornings at 5 to 6:15, about 5000 yards.

Yeah ok. Boys who spend almost 24 hours a week training intensely for competition. Yeah we shave our bodies, but we are jacked as hell and probably more overall in shape than other athletes.

for the love of god people learn how to swim...its easy, fun, and it may save your life and a lot of humiliation.

I've never been humiliated in my 7 years of not swimming.
Since I never bother with beaches or water (except when I drink it to balance out all the beer and pop I drink and some smokes), I don't have to worry about having to swim to "save my life"

kinda not the point of what I meant by saving your life...how do you know for sure that you'll never be in a situation where you will have to swim to save your life?...flooding...freak accident on a boat ride...or your in an accident that leaves you in the water, come up with any excuse you want for not needing to learn how swim cuz you don't "bother" with water, but its really just one of those things people should learn to do, like riding a bike or something, so are you gonna be a person who drowns because you decided never to learn to swim?...or better yet...your in a situation where you'll have to save someone elses life who can't swim but you can't cuz you don't either. It just escapes me. Maybe you have hydrophobia but you just don't know it yet because you've never been diagnosed properly. You should really look into it. What if a friend of yours who does know how to swim...is knocked out or unconscious in the water and you can't save him or her. I'd be upset if I was that friend.

Christ, I said I know how to swim. I haven't DONE IT IN 7 DAMN YEARS!
If I'm in a flood, I'll float. Grab onto a log or something that's big and floatable and ride the ****er out.
As for boat rides, there's nothing in Memphis for boat rides besides some cheesy riverboat ride that lasts all of 30 minutes. The damn thing goes from the docks, down to the I-55 bridge, turns around and goes back. It's great when you're in grade school but is bull**** as an adult.
I've never had a reason to save someone's life, and if placed in that situation I wouldn't.

Yes I can swim. I prefer to just play in the water though.

I actually swim better under water then on the surface. Maybe everybody is that way. It's just that under water, just about any stroke or kick moves you along. And I keep my eyes open (so I don't bang my head on the sides of the pool.).
