Wisconsin's 'D' needs to get their **** together before next week, since Conf. play begins w/ Iowa at home.

Notre Dame looks absolutely atrocious, but I'll take anything to stop the bleeding and give this team a boost. They can't sleepwalk through the rest of the season like they did the first two games.

They got Duke, Navy, Air Force & Stanford.
Duke = win.
Navy played tough against Rutgers. So they, Navy, might win. Snapping that losing streak to ND, which is 47 or 48
Air Force might win. They beat TCU who played tough against Texas, who's looking overrated at the moment.

I'm not namecalling at all. I'm just really wondering why you think State just plain sucks.
55-18 over a UAB team that hung with Florida State the next week. Beat a good MAC team in Bowling Green, and passed our first true test against Pitt.
I don't know about Pitt being a test, but okay. Also, I don't think they suck, but the program hasn't done squat since Saban, and even then, he didn't accomplish much. Thank God MSU plays U-M later this year, that way their famous collapse after the U-M game won't last long this year..........

Notre Dame really owes Willingham an apology
Indy Star
C'mon, Domers, let me hear it.
http://www.indystar.com/graphics/clear.gifhttp://www.indystar.com/graphics/clear.gif
Sorry, Tyrone.
I'm sorry, can you repeat that?
Sorry, coach Willingham.
Come on, people, let me hear it, this time with gusto, and sound like you really mean it.
Sorrrrry, Ty! We were wrong! We were out of line! We never should have run you out of Notre Dame after just three years!!
There, then.
That's better.
Excuse me if Notre Dame's fall from grace strikes me as a dose of karmic retribution. This goes all the way back to 1990 and the Domers' flagrantly self-serving decision to blow off the College Football Association and fly solo through the college football season. More recently, the big-dollar alums ran Willingham out of town, the first time a Notre Dame coach has been fired before the end of his first contract.
Turns out Willingham, who is starting to restore the University of Washington to its old luster, was a pretty good coach. And his replacement, Charlie Weis, is looking sadly and suspiciously like a fraud.
How bad is it?
Last in the nation in total offense. Last in the nation in rushing. Last in the nation in sacks allowed. They've lost five consecutive games, with five tough games coming up on the schedule. They've lost all five by 20 points or more.
This is Year 3 of the Weis regime. This is supposed to be the first year his recruits, whose classes have earned high marks from the various recruiting services, step up and take ownership of the program.
At Notre Dame's media day this summer, Weis was asked about the chance this might be a "rebuilding year.''
He answered, "May God strike me dead if I use that word. I never use that word. I have nine fifth-year seniors that came back for another year. Don't you think I owe it to them to try to win this year?''
This week, Notre Dame isn't just rebuilding; it's giving itself a do-over. It's declaring itself 0-0 and holding a training camp in late September. Can you begin to imagine the reaction if Willingham had tried such a stunt? He'd have been run out of town.
Oh, wait, he was run out of town anyway.
Can the Domers declare a do-over on that foolish 10-year contract extension they gave Weis in 2005? It really goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway:
This is all on Weis.
It's one thing to be the victim of an upset; we've seen lots of those this season. But Notre Dame has been humiliated. The Irish have been inept. A punch line.
The Domers fell in love with the idea of Weis, a former Notre Dame guy who sounds like them and looks like them, coming down from the NFL summit to scheme Notre Dame's way back to glory.
Now they're stuck with him.
Hard to feel much sympathy, really.
There are a lot of theories on Notre Dame's precipitous decline. And there's some truth to all of them:
Willingham's last full recruiting class, from 2004, was miserable, barely a top 50 class, according to the people who care about that sort of thing. One analyst said the talent level was worthy of a lower-tier MAC team. Those are the players who would be upperclassmen now.
On the flip side, Weis' first two recruiting classes have been highly rated, and his 2008 class, with 19 early commitments, rates as one of the country's best. There's always talent at Notre Dame.
Weis was guilty of over-thinking. Instead of giving his team a basic offensive foundation, he seemed to take a grab-bag approach to these early games. Weis is one of those coaches who believe their Xs and Os are better than yours. So far he has used three quarterbacks -- the first, Demetrius Jones, is transferring to Northern Illinois -- and three offenses. None worked.
Not to sound like Paul Hornung, but Notre Dame's heady academic standards limit the players the Irish can recruit.
There might be a hint of truth to that. The last time Notre Dame won a national title, in 1988, Tony Rice, a Prop 48 guy, was their quarterback. Lou Holtz was able to get kids into school that his successors could not. It was an issue often brought up by Bob Davie, although the Domers weren't particularly eager to accept it.
College football has entered the age of increased competitive parity. Appalachian State beats Michigan. Boise State beats Oklahoma last year. Central Florida nearly takes out Texas. Virtually every big-time program has gone through a dry spell in recent times. Even Miami and Florida State are struggling.
This, though, never should happen at Notre Dame. Never. Not when they have their very own network beaming all their games to the far reaches of the universe. The cupboard in South Bend should never be bare, no matter how high the academic standards might be.
Now then, Domers, wake up those echoes and scream it loud, so they can hear you all the way out in Seattle:
Sorry, Ty!!!!
It's true. Weis won with Tyrone's recruits.
Now he has a God-awful team with his own players.
StorminNorman

It's true. Weis won with Tyrone's recruits.
Now he has a God-awful team with his own players.
Surely you aren't trying to say Willingham is a better coach than Charlie Weis.
Weis has another year to bring in his players. His recruiting classes have always been top, he has brought an energy to a program that it didn't have - and he took Willingham's players that made ND fade back into obscurity and brought them to over preform the last two seasons.
The only reason this is being mentioned is the race factor and the fact that just as most of the media love Notre Dame too much, the same amount have an unnatural bias to them as well.

Dirk Koetter: Out of the job. Incompetent as noted by the drool. Erickson should install the West Coast Thug offense any time soon.

Mike Stoops: Crazy mother ****er who throws tantrums on the sideline.

Bill Doba: Older guy, wise old sea dog, plays the best teams around sometimes. Too bad he's at WSU.
Ty Willingham: According to this picture, he is pissed. I'm glad he put the names back on UW's unis. He might embarass us this Saturday but he's still not a good coach anymore.
Mike Belloti: Wearing his old porn stache. He doesn't wear it anymore, too bad his team hasn't been relevent since then either.
Mike Reilly: Cry baby "UCLA should have hired me!" Yes you were the better cantidate but you need to let it go. Almost as bad as Carroll *****ing about the crowd noise at the Rose Bowl. He probably complained about it at Corvallis like the ***** he is.

SPOUTIN' SPURRIER
One of the great things about Steve Spurrier is, of course, his mouth, which, when articulating his mind's considerable confidence can get him in trouble.
Actually, it would get him into a lot more trouble if he (at least at the college level) didn't tend to back it up. Consider 1995 when Spurrier, then the coach of Florida, was asked if he thought the Gators could beat Georgia for a seventh consecutive year.
"Is Ray Goff still coaching there," Spurrier said, of a man he also once called "Ray Goof." Was that wise? It didn't matter, UF went to Athens and won 52-17. Goff was fired soon after.
So this is Spurrier. He says things other coaches wouldn't dare – either out of courtesy, common sense or because they can't crack a good joke. (When a campus fire at Auburn once destroyed some football players' books he said, "The real tragedy is that half of them hadn't been colored in yet.")
This hasn't changed since getting his comeuppance at the [COLOR=black]Washington Redskins or with his move in 2005 to South Carolina, a perennial 6-5 program that has never won the SEC.
Spurrier, 62, is still talking though, bold and cold. And last April, on one of those perfect spring nights in the South, post practice and in the shadows of Williams-Brice Stadium, Spurrier talked like few coaches would ever dare.
"Time to win," he said. "It's time to win now. We should compete for the SEC. It's time."
There would be no more talk about rebuilding, no excuses about dealing with probation left behind by the cheating of the Lou Holtz regime and no blathering about the brutally tough SEC.
Instead he raised expectations. He increased the urgency. He made proclamations that even the most excitable Gamecock fanatic might have thought twice about. Ready or not, South Carolina was coming. It was time, Spurrier decided, to get serious.
"Maybe we can," he shrugged. "Maybe we can't. But that's what we're here for."
*****
He was saying about the same thing Tuesday, as he prepared for the biggest test of the season.
South Carolina, 3-0 and ranked No. 12, visits mighty, second-ranked Louisiana State on Saturday. A victory would change everything as suddenly the Gamecock=s really are in the hunt, suddenly the schedule almost looks (at least by SEC standards) kind of favorable and suddenly Spurrier, once again, doesn't look so crazy for saying crazy things.
The proof of Spurrier's coaching skill – if he needed any more proof – is the team he is winning with. This isn't your vintage Spurrier club, no high-flying offense, no waves of future NFL weapons to rotate out onto the field.
South Carolina is winning with defense, a ball control running attack and a great field goal kicker. It's downright boring. "I don't think we're going to set any records throwing the ball this year," he joked. He used to like to try to score 70 on people. A couple weeks ago his team beat nationally-ranked Georgia 16-12.
"It will be pretty hard for us to go down there and outscore them," Spurrier said of LSU. "We're looking for a ballgame somewhat like the Georgia game. Hopefully it will be a field goal game. That's the kind of game we would like to have happen."
Spurrier, 18-10 overall in Columbia, is probably never going to be able to amass the kind of talent he once had at Florida. Recruiting has been good, he's attracting some excellent players, but there is a reason South Carolina, despite great facilities and fervent fans, has never been great.
His new home state has a population of just four million (Florida has over 16 million). And while Louisiana isn't much bigger (especially post-Katrina), there isn't another strong in-state program there, like Clemson, that will always get its share of recruits.
"Basically, Tulane is the only school they compete with in-state for players and Louisiana has excellent high school football programs," Spurrier said wistfully. "They have it rolling right now. They have a big-time football program at LSU."
It is a reality that made people question why Spurrier took the job in Columbia in the first place. In his 12 seasons at Florida, he won the league six times and took home the national title in 1996. Before that, he even won at Duke, if you can believe it.
His college resume was beyond reproach, he could have sat back and waited for an LSU or Alabama or wherever to open. Heck, more than one school would have fired their guy to hire Spurrier.
But Florida wasn't a powerhouse when he went there, either. Spurrier may have won the 1966 Heisman as a Gator, but when he took over in 1990, it was so far behind then mega powers Florida State and Miami that the job appeared hopeless. Spurrier changed that. So he likes challenges.
"Look, if it was easy, it wouldn't be worth doin'," he said. "I tell recruits, you can come here and do things for the first time."
*****
There will be nothing easy Saturday in Baton Rouge. LSU is eyeing the title. Just two weeks ago it laid a historic 48-7 whipping on then No. 9 Virginia Tech. And 92,000-seat Tiger Stadium will be deafening, although Spurrier joked that will keep his quarterbacks from making ill-advised audibles – "We're better in the loud ballparks."
Spurrier's teams are generally better in big games. A year ago, in his first trip back to Gainesville, the Gamecock-s had the eventual national champions beat before a late rally and a final second blocked kick saved Florida's season.
So they shouldn't be scared and shouldn't be surprised and, even as the odds seem a little long, shouldn't be taken lightly.
Their coach, for one, will be confident because he is always confident. By any reasonable standard, this is a program that should still have a ways to go, that still shouldn't be capable of beating No. 2 on the road. Any other coach would be reminding everyone of that, downplaying the team's chances, worrying about perception.
Spurrier's standard, though, isn't reasonable. Not now, not ever. Just ask him.
Good read, even though they won't do it. I'm hoping USC can come away with the upset. As long as they keep it close and make a good game out of it, I'll be happy.

Michigan left at least 6 points on the table on those last two drives. Need to capitalize better. Still, I'll take 7-3 and the half and hopefully the D continues to play well and Mallett settles down a bit more.
This season's FG execution is horrid.

I expected our offense to be great.
But our defense is blowing me away - Memphis averaged 500 yards a game before this one.
They hung with Ole Miss too!

Big efforts by the D and Mike Hart. Mallett made some big plays too. They're making the transition from being a talented team to a good team. Need to keep it up.

Gotta say, I'm impressed that Gameday went to Tuscaloosa, mainly given how much ESPN despises this conference.

Gotta say, I'm impressed that Gameday went to Tuscaloosa, mainly given how much ESPN despises this conference.
They've been to places like Baton Rouge, Gainesville and Jacksonville before and a good number of the announcers are always citing the SEC as the top conference in addition to highlighting a number of the relevant games. The USC love is a bit much at times, but I've long thought that ESPN has given the conference its due respect.
I guess what I'm saying is...
