Hello fellow college football fanatics!
Thanks to Dew, I have been allowed to start a new thread. The '06 season is completely over.
To summarize last season:
-Boise State finishes 13-0, still doesn't play for National Title amongst many angry fans of the NCAA.
-Michigan State suffers another crappy season, but gets hope in the form of Mark Dantonio.
-Florida finishes with a BCS title win against the Ohio State Buckeyes, owning Troy Smith in the process.
-Western Michigan, down 24-0 against Cincy, comes back to tie it 24-24, only to lose 27-24. Valiant effort, Broncos!
Let the discussion begin!
Interesting thing I heard on ESPN.. Mark May believes the Gators have a 70% chance to repeat... but then again, it's the BCS.

This is an interesting read about a new weight lifting technique being used at UCLA this off season.

This poll seems kind of eh...
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=2725188
So USC should be #1 because Booty had a 381 yard passing game against Michigan? How many of those yards were to Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett? Michigan is big and slow. Look at how USC did against that small quick defense across town.
And UCLA shouldn't be in the top 20. Maybe 22. But hey, I'll take it.
This may be the best team we've had in years. If Ben Olson starts this WILL be the best team we've had in years.
BCS or bust.
This isn't about weightlifting or techniques, this is about football!
Actually, techniques may come into play.
No weightlifting though!

My mom grew up in Michigan. She pissed off both Michigan and Spartan fans because she liked both schools. She had friends who went to both and refused to take one over the other.
But her brothers are all Michigan fans, except one of them who is a Texas fan. They got to me with Michigan football, but my dad got me with the Cubs and Bears
My stepdad is MSU alumni, so that's my story. :hyper:

someone on espn said that Urban Meyer whinned his way into the national title.
That's what my buddy (NOTE: A diehard U-M fan) says.
SI had a little spotlight about it. They had dates where he'd promote his team and complain about getting in.
I sort of believe it. But hell, Michigan had its chance.
And this year they're gonna be killer again.
Mister J
01-13-2007, 10:36 AM
He did whine if you wanna get down to it. I saw the SI highlight of some of his quotes. In all reality, I don't blame him. Voters are susceptible to that type of thing. He felt like his team had a strong case and he knows the system is flawed, so he did what he could to get a favorable result.
He didn't make anybody do anything, just called attention to the matter. There was no harm in it and if it actually helped a few voters go the other way and vote for Florida, then it was well worth it. It's no different from what Mack Brown did to get Texas into the Rose Bowl in 2004. The articles that were written about Lloyd Carr afterwards, touting his 'integrity' for not politicking were nice and all, but at the end of the day you're trying to get to the title game. The BCS has screwed teams over in the past and it'll screw some over in the future. Meyer did what he could to try to keep his team's name off that list. I can't find fault in that.

To be honest, I would have wanted to see the rematch. I mean, this is one of, if not the most hated rivalry in College Sports.
Playing for the BCS title would just add more fuel to the fire, and many more people would have watched it (except for Floridians and some other Southerners possibly).

All that matters is that right now Georgia has a good shot at being on top of the SEC come December 2007.
- Stafford ended the season one of the best QB's in the SEC.
- Most of our Defense (especially our Secondary) returns.
- Neil Calloway is gone, hopefully his underperforming OL performances are too.
- Number 14 is calling our plays.
- Mark Richt is still our coach.
- Thomas Brown, Kregg Lumpkin, Knoweshon Morenson in our back field - along with Brandon Southerland.
- Martrez Milner is no longer on the roster.

It had to have been a drunken accident. I've heard of kids standing on the cliff and letting the wind keep them up until a gust blows the other way and sends them to death, but I don't think he'd be that dumb to try that.

So is anyone suprised by Peterson's desicion? Im kindaof suprised he left... He was going to be a shoo-in(is that even a word?) for the Heisman. However no doubt he'll go as the first running back in the draft, probably in the top 5 spots.

That does suck. Miami's had them there for the last 2 years and they thankfully moved it. I like a couple of 'warm-up' games before you get into some real competition. There's too much riding on losing a game to have your team go up against another top program before they've had a chance to get some field time.

Georgia Congressman Opposes Pro-Gators Resolution (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2735433)
Congressman Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) rarely goes against GOP opinion in key votes on Capitol Hill. But on Tuesday, the eight-term Congressman really found himself in the minority.
Kingston, who has represented District 1 in southeast Georgia since 1993, was the only member of Congress to oppose House Resolution 39, which commended "the University of Florida Gators for their victory in the 2006 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and for winning the national college football championship."
His reason? Kingston grew up in Athens, Ga., home of the University of Georgia, his alma mater and one of the Gators' fiercest rivals. Kingston still lives in Savannah, Ga., and flies to Washington weekly.
"Any time you can see Ohio State lose, it's a good day," said Kingston, who also attended Michigan State for two years. "However, there's just so far you can go. The Bulldog tendency in me hit and I had to vote no in a good, friendly rivalry."
The House bill passed by a vote of 414-1. Eight other congressmen from Georgia voted yes to the proposal, two voted present and two others didn't vote at all. The bill was sponsored by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and 19 other representatives from Florida.
The Gators defeated unbeaten and then-No. 1 Ohio State 41-14 in the BCS title game Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz., to win the school's second national championship in football. The Gators also won a national championship in men's basketball last season, becoming the first Division I-A school to hold both titles concurrently.
"I supported Florida in the game and wanted them to win and win big," Kingston told ESPN.com Thursday. "I'm obviously going to be partial to the SEC."
Such bills typically pass unanimously in Congress. For example, House Resolution 43, a bill that commended "the Boise State University Broncos football team for winning the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and completing an undefeated season," passed by a vote of 415-0 on Tuesday.
Hilarious. Reminds me of ESPN's 'Never Graduate' series of commercials. I love college sports. :D

Petey has 3 Heisman winners in his tenure - he has the right to tell the kids that.
Yes, because having 2 great RB's really hurt them when White and Bush patrolled the backfield. Plus any USC line will be okay against most Pac 10 DL.

SC and Florida's classes were ridiculous. McKnight surprised me by going with SC. I thought he was staying at home with LSU, but that damn Pete Carroll is a hell of a recruiter.
Freakin' Florida snatched Deonte Thompson at the last minute. There was a decent chance of him going to Miami. I'm happy with what Randy was able to accomplish. He got some big signings (Marve, Bailey, Cooper and swiping Van Dyke away from the damn Gators).
Michigan did well too. Mallet is huge and I can't wait to see him under center. Of course, the damn Gators snagged Finch, but hey, Meyer was a machine this year.
I can't believe how well North Carolina and Illinois did. I know about Butch Davis and I'm not surprised he got some guys to come in (getting Marvin Austin was incredible), but Illinois sucks. NCAA resets controversial clock rules
In all his years sitting in Sanford Stadium, Walter Corish can't recall ever hearing a fellow Georgia fan gripe about a football game lasting too long.
But the longtime Bulldogs season-ticket holder heard plenty of complaining last fall when NCAA rules changes started cutting his favorite team's games short by a few downs.
"I thought the rules took away part of the game from the kids," Corish said, "and they darn sure took something away from the fans."
Responding to negative reaction by fans and coaches, the NCAA football rules committee on Wednesday recommended completely eliminating the controversial clock rules of 2006 and implementing a new set of time-saving measures.
Last season's rules shortened the average game by about 14 minutes, but they also eliminated about 13 plays and reduced scoring by about five points a game. Coaches overwhelmingly complained that the rules changed the structure and flow of the game too much. After reviewing the data, the committee agreed.
The new rules are designed to put those plays back into the game but still shorten the game by eliminating "a lot of standing-around time," said Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, one of two Division I-A coaches on the NCAA committee.
The most unpopular new rule last season called for the game clock to start as soon as the ball was marked ready for play after a change of possession. That rule was eliminated; the clock now won't start until after the first snap of a possession.
"What we lost was the playing opportunities for our athletes," said committee chairman Mike Clark, head coach at Virginia's Bridgewater College. "What we have done now will hopefully put more action into the game but diminish the dead time. At the same time, we plan to work at many levels to maintain the game length [we had]."
The rules changes include:
• Kickoffs will be from the 30-yard line instead of the 35. The clock won't start until the receiver touches the ball; last season it started as soon as the ball was kicked. Tuberville estimates 90 percent of kickoffs will now be returned.
"You'll find that kicking it out of the end zone will be rare, and it will add excitement to the game," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. "There will be more pressure on the kick-coverage team and more pressure on the defense because the offense is going to get better field position."
• Coming out of a television timeout, the play clock for the first play of a possession will be 15 seconds instead of the normal 25.
"The teams have been standing out there for almost three minutes during a TV timeout," Tuberville said. "They don't need 25 more seconds to get to the line and run a play."
• Charged team timeouts — not TV timeouts — will be cut by 30 seconds. This will be football's version of basketball's 30-second timeout. It will allow a coach to stop the clock but without a long delay. The timeout will last 30 seconds plus the 25 seconds on the play clock.
• On kickoffs, the play clock will start once the kicker is handed the ball by the official. In the past, the kicker could take as much time as he wanted before kicking the ball. Now, he is on the clock and a violation will result in a 5-yard penalty.
"That idea actually came from the coaches," said Rogers Redding, the SEC's supervisor of officials. "They thought a lot of time was being wasted getting the guys in position to kick the ball. This will speed up that process."
• The time allowed for instant replay reviews will be capped at two minutes. This will save some time but not a lot. The average replay review last season was 1:49, according to the NCAA.
The rules committee also announced that starting in 2008, college football will go to a 40-second play clock like that now used in the NFL. The 40-second clock will start at the end of every play. College football currently uses a 25-second clock that doesn't start until the ball is put in position and declared ready for play.
All of the proposals still need to be rubber-stamped by the NCAA's playing rules oversight panel on March 12

Petey has 3 Heisman winners in his tenure - he has the right to tell the kids that.
Yes, because having 2 great RB's really hurt them when White and Bush patrolled the backfield. Plus any USC line will be okay against most Pac 10 DL.
As far as NCAA Sanctions go, lets see them before predicting anything.
That's as far as traditional soft PAC-10 defenses are. But look how they played against a superior PAC-10 defense last year. USC's (very good) O-line got dominated. Our QB had more rushing yards than 'SC's entire all star back field in the second half.
As the log jam goes, their O-line won't be as good. UCLA keeps building the lines. The lack of skill players is hurting the Bruins, but building the lines is always a good strategy.

Meh...He's gone after this year. The media has set the expectations pretty high.
On a side not, I'm glad they changed the rules back. We don't need the NCAA to turn into the NFL with its attempts to shorten the game.

Well, Dorell isn't getting paid the millions of dollars you see at other schools. He has his base pay but gets a lot of money off of incentives such as winning ten game, The Rose Bowl, BCS. So it wouldn't cost us too much. I'm sure he could find a new job right away. He's a young coach who is still learning. This isn't the place were a coach who is learning should be.

Tommy has shown that Clemson can easily win the ACC. They were one point away from the championship game this year and last year. They've beaten F.St 3 out of the last 4.

Did you know that since 2003 the team that had finished last in the NFC South finished first the very next season?
Carolina finished last in 2002, and first in 2003.

Sad because UCLA doesn't have that type of money to spend on athletics?
The money spent on Saban came from Alabama Alumni donations to the FOOTBALL PROGRAM. So no money was taken away from the academic portion of the University.
If Saban wins (which I think most expect him to) then Alabama will get tons more money coming into the school by way of merchandise, bowls, tv deals, etc (I don't mention tickets because ticket sells at Alabama are a constant - just like they are at Georgia ;)) This brings money INTO the academic part of the school and thus benefiting EVERYONE.

And another thing, Nick Saban is likely to bail and run off with that money. He's bailed everywhere else he's been.
Who will pay him more money than Alabama? Alabama has alumni who will give Saban their first born child if he wins a National Championship.

Sure, but to talk down to the SEC's Athletics because you were losing an argument is a pretty immature thing to do - which given your history should of been expected.
I am sorry to have higher expectations.
