View Full Version : What is with Americas Fear of Sex

Most parents in america have a morbid fear of their kids finding out about sex. We've only gotten a little better from the stork; why are parents so scared of their children finding out about a simple biological process? It's no more unnatural than breathing or going to the bathroom.

agreed...my favorite example of this is the whole GTA: San Andreas Hot Coffee incident...it's ok to have an extremely violent game where you can murder policemen and innocent civilians, crash a plane into a building in a suicide run, blow up an army base with a rocket launcher, etc. but god forbid there's some pixel sex in it! that's just evil!
Majik1387

Because they're afraid it will demoralize children.
I know it's idiotic but I just live here. Plus the majority of parents annoy me.
And as for the GTA:SA Hot Coffee thing, if I remember correctly it was a hack, and not part of the game itself.

"Son, it's perfectly okay to murder hookers but don't you ever play a game in witch you can have sex with them!":cmad:
South Park also poked fun at that too, noting that parents will overlook violence as long as sex is involved.:whatever:

it was in the coding for the game, but you had to download a hacked save game file to get to it, and it would cause random lock ups because it was hacking the game...but it was in the coding, it just looked like something they scrapped for time or something...the mechanics of the hot coffee game were very similar to the dancing mini-game in it

Personally I wish people would get a little prudent about sex and stop being like a bunch of ****ing pigs :) But hell I'm in the minority there... I mean I can agree with how ridiculous people can be about sex but on the one hand I've never seen a problem with excessive violence since most people can distinguish right and wrong(hopefully) when it comes to violence. However considering the huge problem American has with sexual harrassment, I can see greater ramifications from sex on TV...

if a guy who watches boxing goes to a bar and beats the hell out of someone for no reason, you dont blame boxing, therefore why would you blame a guy hitting on his secretary on porn? the only people the media effects are those too weakminded and f**ked up in the first place to realize that it's not the real world

I have to concur on this subject. Referring to the movies, it's fine to see a person get shot and bleed, but when a woman takes off her top, Hell then freezes over. This fear of sex is to be blamed on religious folks who take their moral beliefs a bit too far.

Did you read my post?
I said I don't believe people seeing violence has an affect since people can judge right and wrong. However watching sex on TV does. Sex in the media is far more subtle since like 80% of all female characters in TV/Movies are sexual objects to some degree, etc... Women are nearly always used in a sexual light, it does purport an image of women as merely sexual objects, and saddly I do believe it has a sad effect on the american public which has led to the very disturbing statistics of I think like 1 in 3 women being sexually molested in some way once in there life. Violence is completely difference since it's very clear cut when we're kids that using violence to solve problems is wrong, but how many parents explain that treating women like sexual objects is wrong? That's why I think sex in the media is worse, however I think all out censoring is stupid. Sex is a part of life and culture, it can't be tottally erased, nor should it but it should be toned back I think...

Key Facts
* Every two and a half minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted.
* One in six American women are victims of sexual assault, and one in 33 men.
* In 2004-2005, there were an average annual 200,780 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault.
* About 44% of rape victims are under age 18, and 80% are under age 30.
* Since 1993, rape/sexual assault has fallen by over 69%.

you just destroyed your own argument by hitting the real cause of it...if parents would expain right from wrong to their children about sex as they do about violence, this wouldnt be a problem, yet we get kids going into sex ed in middle school who still think kids come from a f**king cabbage patch or stork because their idiot, fearful parents have tried to shield them from "the evils" of sex, so the only info they get on it is from television and on the street...so when it comes down to it, it's parents fault, just like a kid who goes into a class room and kills 8 people after playing doom, not the medias

The issue of sex in America is a subject of some distress to me. It is often portrayed as naughty for people to talk about, or when it does show up it is portrayed as mainly whorish. Women are portrayed as ****ty sex symbols but children (hell, even some adults) are not being taught about sex the way they should be.
Abstinence is a popular teaching method but not enough people are informed about protection methods. Shying away from the subject only makes young people want to experiment more. Unfortunately, since they are afraid of talking to their parents, they don't understand basic things involving safe sex, oral sex, etc.
Even on this site I am disturbed by things such as "the pull-out method always works for me!". I think education is the key to making sex a non-tabboo subject. For those mature and informed, sex can be a wonderful thing, it shouldn't always be portrayed as scandalous.

Read my posts, yes the media is at fault and so are the parents. I don't believe in Black and White answers, you can't just blame one thing, it's combination of things. The parents can explain things to there kids but when you live in a society, that is saying the complete opposite sometimes it hard to get through to a kid. But like I said I don't think sex should be erased and not talked about, but it's completely ridiculous the role women play in the media.

Well, I guess the point is supposed to be that it's the ultimate form of birth control. However, abstinence is definitely a choice made by few. That's great for them, but people who do not choose it need to be fully educated on pregnancy and STD risks.
I'll even throw in a personal example: Before I became sexually active, I decided I wanted to go on birth control. I asked my parents about it and they said "maybe later" or something of the sort. Basically brushed me off. So, once I became sexually active I knew I couldn't just sit around waiting for them. I went on my own and got put on the pill and then informed my parents that I had started it and would like to please be covered by insurance for my prescription. My dad was most unhappy and basically called me a ho. My mother was more understanding. Regardless, I made my point.
Here's why I brought up that story: not many girls would have taken it upon themselves to get put on the pill after their parents said no. I do not believe that condoms are effective enough, so how many people out there are getting pregnant because of stubborn parents?! Scary stuff.

The problem is that people can't be neutral when it comes to molestation, they instantly want to hang the guy without any proof. Trust me, if someone has actually done it I think they should get life in prison were they can get ass raped every day.

Howard Stern is bringing back his "It's Just Wrong" game in a couple weeks.
Mothers and Sons. The winner gets $5,000. Every question mom gets wrong, the son takes off a piece of mom's clothing.
He had this game on terrestrial radio a couple years ago. Brothers and sisters. Fathers and daughters.

You were raised by a feminist huh?
Way too many people pull the "repressed memory" card for my comforts, I'm hardly saying that rape or molestation is media hype, but to say that one sixth of women have been sexual molested and that one sixth of men are molesters is bull ****. Way too many men get wrongfully imprisoned.
Far from it actually... Hell most people think I'm a mysognistic prick in real life, mainly because I crack as many jokes about how it sucks to a woman as possible, and very rarely get into my own personal beliefs on the subject. Actually this is the first time I've gotten into it on the hype, I don't talk about it very often. However I do truely feel bad for females since it literally does suck to be one. But nah I'm not a really big feminist since I barely talk about it, I just simply can't deny facts as they are.

It's silly to speed up the process of becomming an adult to children. This seems to be the mentality here in the U.S. Children should be able to be kids, and taught how to be an adult, mainly by their parents.
It is silly for a young pre-pre-pubescent child to know all the ins and outs of bedroom behavior. We breed men today who are shallow, incapable of sacrificing for their families, and are basically wimps mainly because of radical femenist pushing their agenda against masculinity.
Boys in particular, shouldn't be taught that "scoring the most chicks" is important. They should be taught how to be a man, and there is nothing wrong with masculinity. It's great to be a man, it's great for boys to want to be men. It's not great when boys are prematurely taught BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN THEIR PARENTS about intercourse.
This is the fall of western society. We are no longer men, but 14 year old boys in the bodies of men who only think of themselves, due largely in part because of the indoctrination of early sex education. "Fathers" no longer wrestle with their boys, they no longer teach them to catch, but would rather "score" with women other than their son's mothers.
We have bred a nation of males who are no longer men, but rather "guys". They are men without chests.

Personally, I feel that this ridiculous sweeping of sex under the carpet that American society has engaged in over the last 50-60 years has resulted in a HUGE amount of sexual repression that directly translates to so many of our societal ills. I'm not suggesting that people should just be having sex with anyone and everyone, just so no one is mistaken here. What I am suggesting is that having open, frank discussions about it and accepting the fact that it is a part of life that we are naturally inclined to instead of some deep, dark dirty secret that will somehow cease to exist if we ignore it. I see so many people in our culture that are sexually frustrated and repressed and all that gets bottled up and translated into anti-social behavior, intimacy issues, neuroticism, anger problems, power lust, teen pregnancy, venereal diseases and so many other things that we could really do with out. Sex has always existed. It always will be. No matter how hard some people try to pretend that it doesn't.
As far as kids go, there's a right time to have that kind of conversation with your kid. It really depends on their maturity level and ability to comprehend rather than their age, so it takes good judgment on the part of the parent. On one hand you want them to be informed and aware so they can protect themselves from predators, and on the other you don't want to steal their childhood away from them before it's necessary. It's a fine line and a difficult one to walk at that. But, when you do have that conversation with your kids about sex, don't treat it like it's some horrible fact of life. Sex is a beautiful part of life and they shouldn't think of it as dirty and shameful. They need to understand that it's also a big responsibility and not to be taken lightly and that it's not just a casual thing, either. It's special and sacred, to be honest, and they should understand that they shouldn't necessarily be having it just because they can. Talk to kids like adults and you might surprised how they respond.
At any rate, there's this clinging to the neo-puritan values that really re-emerged during the 40's and 50's as a response to the looser roaring 20's and 30's that still permeates our society. We had a slight respite from them in the 60's and then they came back with a vengeance. I understand why some people cling to them, but I think certain parts of them are outdated and unnecessary, personally.

bottom line:
as long as the religious right has control over the country, our culture will fear sex like the plague.it goes back much, much further than that. Victorian morals; gotta love them. How a chick that had 9 kids and obviously dug the old in-out with the Prince got branded with a set of values that espouses sexual repression I don't know.

Most parents in america have a morbid fear of their kids finding out about sex. We've only gotten a little better from the stork; why are parents so scared of their children finding out about a simple biological process? It's no more unnatural than breathing or going to the bathroom.
Morals, ideals that type of thing.Such things are still not ment to be spoken out in public, but rather behind closed doors. Its what is deemed acceptable and what is not.
Honey Vibe

Parents have a hard time guiding their children on issues of love and sex, because they never had any emotional discipline in this area themselves. Their lives just fell together all hodge-podge, and well, junior, here we are. So their kids just decide with the same facility -- "if it feels good, do it!" -- and the cycle repeats itself.
Seriously, all the parent critics here, what are you going to tell YOUR kids? If you'll nonchalantly "not care" what they do, let me give you a heads up on something: your future kids hate your guts. They hate you because, as they look back on their upbringing, you were no kind of mom or dad. :down

When your kids ask you about sex, it's highly unlikely that the gist of their burning questions will be about learning the biological process.

The name is Memphis Slim.....and I post those things I agree with. But most glaring is your non-response to the social problems that "sexual freedom" has brought upon our society. Single parent families, more grand-parents raising their grandchidren than ever before, diseases, death, violent crime.........

Whatever, celldog. The sexual revolution didn't bring those things into our society any more than rampant capitalism, greed, corporate and government corruption, increased selfishness, the slacker generation, the ever widening gap between the "have's" and the "have not's" (i.e. the socio-economic gap), racism, inequality between the sexes, gender role confusion, or social degredation as a society matures that has happened in many cultures throughout history or any other social factor you can name. To blame it one single thing is naive. And, you seem to have missed the part in my initial post in this thread where I attributed some of the problems you're accrediting to sexual freedom to sexual repression in a society where sexuality is to this day viewed as evil and vile and something to be swept under the carpet like it doesn't exist. An attitude that continues to be shared with our children. And before you go off, it's not about "if it feels good, do it" and just having life be a giant orgy for everyone. It's about accepting that sex is a part of life and is not something to be shunned. It's to be appreciated, respected, and understood that it carries great responsibility with it. But people like you who blame the sexual revolution of forty years ago on today's societal ills really fail to see the greater picture of ALL the things that have contributed to the decline of western civilization, my observation about puritan values about sexuality creating psycho-traumatic life experiences for so many aside. Perhaps you would feel better if you just got laid (and didn't feel guilty about it afterwards)?

hmm, might I inquire how violent crime is tied to the "sexual freedom" you speak of? and uh, for that matter, these problems existed BEFORE the "sexual freedom".
ahahaha "death" comes from sexual freedom? that's laughable.

In some people's eyes, sex is apparently a lot like "Reefer Madness", wherein it causes people to go insane and become delusional, angry and violent and likely to engage in criminal behavior. :whatever: I can see where a lack of it or at least being so uptight, ashamed and riddled with guilt over the very concept might cause people to go that way, though.

and Ironically, I have seen that it's mostly a Western thing, Europe is a little less terrified of sex and some Oriental countries are comparatively "super free" a friend of mine and I were thinking it might have to do with the "protestant/catholic" mentality and how sex has always been "shameful" to them, for years the church implied that "the apple" the "forbidden fruit" was, you know. Eve's vagina.

Most parents in america have a morbid fear of their kids finding out about sex. We've only gotten a little better from the stork; why are parents so scared of their children finding out about a simple biological process? It's no more unnatural than breathing or going to the bathroom.
It all dates back to the stupid puritans and the ridiculous religious beliefs in this country. Sorry to say so, but it's pretty much true....well almost.

It goes something like this.
Sex = Children
To Parent of a 14 year old child, Children = bad
Thus, Sex = bad.

You guys are being waayy too political about this.
Sex is a natural instinct in every species. The only reason why its looked down upon in public is because of other people's insecurities. Maybe one day we'll all be like the japanese and broadcast chicks having orgasms on game shows on the tv.

Being religious means not overindulging in the senses, so I respect those religious persons who do not wish to indulge the sexual appetite. I'm not sure, however, why people who are not religious have taboos about sex, and teach their children that sex is evil, if they are not going to bring their children into the Church.
There are legitimate concerns parents may have about their kids becoming sexually active: STDs, rape/molestations, pregnancy, getting into unhealthy relationships based on lust rather than true love. The way to educate your children, however, about these dangers is not to just ignore the subject, or assume that one's child is not going to develop normal feelings of sexual arousal, like any other child.
