Short answer trademarking. Hasbro been trademarking every TF name since 1988. If they can't trademark a name they won't/can't use it. Some names they can keep by sticking Autobot/Decepticon (or a sub-group name) infront of it. So any Ratchet/Devastator/Jazz/Scrapper toy are going to have 'bot/'con (or Constructicon in Dev case) in front of them. And now Grimlock has joined them. Autobot Grimlock from now on.

Slag has appearantly joined the list of names now lost, possibly forever. Along side the likes of Bluestreak (now Silverstreak), Hot Rod (Rodimus), Shrapnel (Insecitcon), Mixmaster (something with mix or master in it), Trailbreaker (Overhaul). Luckily some like Jazz and Bumble Bee have been reclaimed. In BB case at now small expense on Hasbro's part.

I also forgot some names. They got back Shockwave and Ravage. And Hound plus Track they have to use Autobot infront of.

On a related note, I think David Kaye could do a good voice for a matured Prime.

It's different how he is portrayed. I hope over more eps he evolves into the heroic leader which I think he will and will prove himself to Ultra Magnus.

Not really Hasbro will either put out to get the effrot to get the name Hot Rod back or he'll be named Rodimus (his Japanese name BTW), Hot Rodimus, or Rodimus major. And you know that the masterpiece line is all Takara's ballgame. All Hasbro does is dip in to see which they want to release.

Its not really a matter of effort. Its a matter of paying the trademark owner.

The name "Hot Rod" is owned by Hotrod automobile magazine.....and Hasbro is not willing to share the profits of any toy sales with the magazine owners.

Thats also why thy havent been able to use the pre-fix "Autobot" loop hole that they were able to use in some other cases.

Since the trademark owner is a "Automobile" magazine Hasbro could be sued for trademark infringment if they called the toy "Autobot Hot Rod".

I knew who owned the trademark for Hot Rod. But I've also heard that trdemarks for different products are handed out seperately. That is said Hot Rod magazine would ahve to hold a current trademark for Hot Rod under toys. Meh who knows really (besides Hasbro legal :applaud ). Well depending on what Bay and co. insist on doing. We may end up with the film character called Hot Rod (all of those lost toy trademark names are still used in the comics) but the toys called Rodimus or Hot shot or Rodimus ____. :hehe: A la Brawl-Devastator.

Trademarks for different products are handed out seperately but when the products in question share more then one common trait infringement laws come into play.

The common traits in this case are:
1] the name Hot Rod
2] the fact that one would be a Automobile while the other is a magazine about Automobiles
2] the character would be a Autobot. Which is also part of the Magazines trademark. The trademark for the mag is "Hot Rod Automobile magazine".

So right there you can see how many things the two would have in common.

Now if Hasbro desided to make the [or a ] character called "Hot Rod" that was a Decepticon and became a plane or gun or what ever they should be able to get away with it.

Well depending on what Bay and co. insist on doing. We may end up with the film character called Hot Rod (all of those lost toy trademark names are still used in the comics) but the toys called Rodimus or Hot shot or Rodimus ____. :hehe: A la Brawl-Devastator.

The name "Hot Rod" and others that have trade mark issues can be used in fiction like comics and novels.I never completely understood why theres a difference but I think it has to do something with the written fiction not being considered a valid advertising platform for selling toys.

They didn't loose it all the way. Just they had to make it less generic. So Autobot Grimlock, along with Autobot Jazz, Autobot Ratchet, Autobot Tracks, Autobot Grapple, and Autobot Hound. Not like it's Hasbro's fault. Blame whom ever was trying to snipe Grimlock from them and the copyright judge who made them go with Autobot Grimlock.

But I dunno...

Even DC and Marvel does not own the rights to all its characters names.

DC lost the rights to use the name "Superboy" but that was for different reasons and Marvel was sued for doing the first "Blade" movie in part because they had not updated their copyrights on the character.

And under the original copyright laws most of DC's characters should be by right "public domain" characters by now.....meening that anyone should be allowed to do a Superman or Batman comic book or movie if they wanted to and not be sued.

Public domain only happens 20 years after publication ends. That's why DC only scooped up the Fawcett Marvel family characters in 1971 (20 years after they'd forced them to stop publishing them). Show me a 20 year interval where any of DC's stable hasn't been published in some form. There is a reason old characters get dragged out every once in a while and paraded around. :applaud

They should own the rights to the names, like Marvel or DC. I mean that's like calling Spider-Man, "Superhero Spider-Man".

But I dunno...
These type of trademarking issues do happen in comics. Marvel for example has trademarked Marvel out the ass for comic titles. Even going so far as to trademark Captain Marvel as a comic title. You'll note that DC has had a character called Captain Marvel since 1971 and never named his title that. It's always Shazam something. If they even have Captain Marvel on the cover of the book their ass is in a legal sling. For trademark infringments.

Not a big fan of Meltdown or --ugh-- Colossus Rhodes myself. Or, really, any human villain here but doesn't Meltdown have a toy where he turns into a robot bike or something? That actually makes him somewhat promising.

Those two aside, good episode. Prowl & Fanzone had some decent buddy cop chemistry.

Although it's the future. Why does Fanzone have a Zack Morris Cell Phone?

I've noticed that the human villians provide the buffon enemies that kids shows need. So rather than have the decepticons be competent one episode and idiots the next. I just watched the latest Episode. The short tussle between the Dinobots and Autobots was great, the rest not so much. The Dinobots should just go on another rampage and bite every human villain's head off in a bloody massacre. Including Sari. And what the heck is martial arts good for against at least 15ft tall evil robots of mass destruction?

Unfortunatly Bulkhead has been put in this catagory as well, but yeah it's better to have the humans take the comic relief over the Decepticons. Blitzwing kind of has a few funny bits, but in good taste.

Ah I see it now. I think these Transformers are surprisingly slender looking and organically shaped. Lots of old schoolers will miss the bulky robot feel but I still love how well these designs translate into figs.

I know this belongs in the Products thread but correct me if I'm wrong, these figs will only be released around June right? What's out are currently prototypes on eBay?

I am actually inpressed with the look of the toys and how close they resemble their animated counter-parts, best of all the transformations work with some form of complexity.

03-12-2008, 07:37 AM
Well since I haven't gotten my hands on one (and most likely will not till the better half of next year), the jury's still out on that Avangarde. I do like how they've gone with ball joints for most of the articulation, from the videos I've seen on youtube, you don't need to worry about accidentally snapping off a stubborn limb.

Avangarde
03-12-2008, 07:46 AM
Yeah, ball joints are a good move with these toys, they give the mechanics more freedom with the transformations and they don't have that stiffness like older TF toys.

The next ep airs on the 15th right? Looks like I'll get it by the 16th. "The Headmaster" doesn't sound too appealing but I'll try to catch it anyways.

These are the things I don't like about this series:

- "Ownage, total ownange!!" nuff said
- Fanzone saying "this is why I hate machines!!!" every 2 minutes. Dude, we get it...
- Optimus having only like 7 lines of dialogue each episode, and even when he does say something it's usually clueless like "whats a slumber party" or "I think something called, insurance will cover that." Yeah there funny and it's okay to say that once in a while but, I mean, he's the Leader!
- Hardly ANY Decepticon action.
- Sumdacs voice... ugh.
- Gay villains
- Stupid sub plots like Slumber parties and painting

Maybe more to come, it's late and I'm tired...

Honestly, you guys are forgetting just what kind of Transformers came BEFORE Animated. The build-up I can live with. THe humor is cutesy but thankfully not campy which is better than alot of stuff to come out of Japan for awhile (i.e Armada, Energon, Cybertron).

Build-up people! Megs is coming!

Nathan
03-16-2008, 07:57 AM
Build-up I can live with as well, as long as we get some decent Episodes. Instead of some wannabe super-villains, I'd prefer some sort of sub-division of the military trying to fight the Transformers because they believe they are a threat. Sorta like Cadmus in JLU.

But seriously, nothing in Armada, Energon or Cybertron was as bad as the latest Episode of Transformers Animated.

Stunticons (and Protectabots) are the least popular. On average. It goes in kiddie popularity, construction vehicles<military vehicles<rescue vehicles<sports cars<trains. Better hope that they do the Stunticons for classics.

For real though, I don't mind the subplots involving giant robot slumber parties or art so much because the inherent contrast makes it entertaining. But when you face off our heroes against the corniest, most cliche'd human villains crapped up exclusively for this show when there are legions of decepticons not even touched upon, it pisses off a gigantic, loyal fanbase. But hey, as long as Hasbro sells happy meal toys, I guess nobody cares.

I never had a problem with Teen Titans. I like all the episodes of that series. However, I don't know why the creators of that series have tried to turn a transformers cartoon into something it was never meant to be. The previous transformers series didn't have human characters this annoying, retarded superhuman villians, and multiple episodes without decepticons. They also didn't have episodes were the autobots had slumber parties, contributed to art shows, went tricker treating, and participated in pro-wrestling matches.

This cartoon was never meant to be a comedy. If that was the intention of the producers then call it something else. I would have no problem if this was called go-bots because the original one sucked just like this
cartoon does. What's amazing is the original go-bots cartoon was more enjoyable to watch then this piece of crap.

I'm beginning to wonder if these producers are even capable of making an enjoyable transformers episode because I've yet to see one.

Watch Beast Wars then. Of course you'd still have to deal with pre-Evolved humans.

And to be fair to the creators, they need to really have these breather episodes for character build-up and yeah...just to annoy die-hard G1 fanboys. It will get better, Season 2 is shaping up for it.

What's your point? Pointing out the flaws of previous crappy transformers series doesn't make transformers animated suck any less. This series might as well be called "Autobots fighting lame human villians in the big city with special guest appearances by a few Decepticons." Also, the animation of the theme song should be edited with scenes of the lame human villians the autobots have encountered.

Thats mostly because of the fact that they were the only G1 combiner who's components were "in scale" while in robot modes with the basic TF's from the rest of the line.

So if you wanted your Predeacon leader to fight Optimus Prime it didnt look like Prime was fighting a Hobit.

That being said I find it very funny when you ask a group of TF fanboys who their fav combined robots from the show the the numbers lean twards Devestator but if you aske them which is their fav combiner toy they say the Predacons.

Quoted for the truth, I to see it's potential which is why I still continue to watch it. It will get to the stage when all the regular characters have been given enough attention with all this hero's fighting crime business, and evolve into something bigger and much more epic. I can honestly see by the 3rd maybe 4th season the Autobots heading back into space for more adventures with other new ones coming to earth Earth. Take the current 5 main characters split them up and mix them up with some new bots like Jazz, Magnus, Ironhide, even bring in others like Sideswipe and Sunstreaker to have stories both set in space and on Earth.

Yes, the series may have potential but, we shouldn't have to go through a crappy season or two to witness it's potential. Great cartoon series are great right from the start. Not true man. A possible reason why you're feeling this way is probably because, I dunno, as a more matured G1 fan of the old-skool TFs, this Kiddie TFs kinda disappoints the standards you set for it when you compare it to the sole Testament of G1. I felt the same way for EVERY Jap TF series in the past decade really. Maybe I've lowered my standards but really, I see potential. See, the problem with this series is that it fights a dangerous enemy: Legacy.

Other toons, especially those with original stories don't suffer from this stigma like Avatar The Last Airbender or such. But hey, its your choice man. Diss at will.

Lars, its probably Hong Kong. I'd know if it's in Singapore. I LIVE here! Most of the dealers are waiting on their figs too. Tempting stuff on ebay....but I'll wait.

I couldn't catch this show until Saturday or so and could only handle about five minutes of it. It was all ready annoying and then that mutant kid showed up. I didnt care for any of the Unicron trilogy, but the episodes of those shows I managed to watch had SOME funny stuff in them, which isnt even the main thing a TF show should be going for in the first place. Also, I thought the Armada pilot had good animation. When watching this, I didnt get disappointed or pissed, I was more confused than anything. All this time I thought the TF shows had been bad because Japanese wackiness doesn't translate well to me, and that the Transformers could come back if only they could get another American cartoon. Now I feel embarrassed for being an American, moreso than usual.

I thought this episode was pretty bad for the following:

Autobots playing video games.

Autobots going camping.

Space barnicles.

Sari making annoying looking faces as usual.

Sari's father acting gulible again.

The annoying humor that ruins any attempt at making this cartoon serious.

I'm not expecting much out of the remaining episodes. This season is crap.

I thought this episode was pretty bad for the following:

Autobots playing video games-I can understand BB doing this as he has the personality of a young teen.

Autobots going camping-Again no problem with this as prowl loves nature.

Space barnicles-didn't love them, didn't hate them, much would have preferred decepticon.

Sari making annoying looking faces as usual-Very annoying.

Sari's father acting gulible again-May seem out of there due to him being very intelligent making machines, he must be socially restarted:oldrazz: but it makes a good storyline, the father is the cause of the return of Megatron

The annoying humor that ruins any attempt at making this cartoon serious-The humor was way over the top in this ep.

I'm not expecting much out of the remaining episodes. This season is crap.
Next ep will rule:twisted:

Tail's a little short but I know I'm getting this. Voyager Prime? There are three versions of Prime???

lars573
03-27-2008, 10:53 AM
More like 6.
-Deluxe Cybertron mode
-Voyager earth mode
-Supreme Transform and roll out Prime, also based on earth mode Prime
-Deluxe battle damaged earth mode Prime, from the two pack
-Animated Activators Prime, Animateds FAB line which is scout sized this time
-Bumper bots Prime, Animated's cyber slammers

But every character gets an activator and a bumper bot. Megatron has the next higest number of alternate toy versions with voyager cybertron mode and leader earth mode. The other half of the two pack is battle damaged cybertron mode Megatron.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JINGL4USjhA
Transform and roll out Prime and Activator BB (only one Hasbro has shown every character will get one though).

sandwraith
03-27-2008, 08:07 PM
Okay...so if I were to only go for one type of Prime, as show accurate as possible, Voyager would be the best bet right? Leader class is completely different and there is no Leader class for Prime?

lars573
03-27-2008, 10:17 PM
Going by what they did for Cybertron and the movie, Hasbro is only going to make 3 leader class figures. And they are going to be Megatron, Bulkhead, and Ultra Magnus (possibly). As for the voyager Prime he's not that show accurate. Hasbro, in their arch-villiany and cash grabbery, gave voyager Prime a ver non-show accurate axe. So to have a show accurate voyager Prime you need to buy deluxe Prime and use his axe as the weapon.

Cannot wait to get that Grimlock:woot:

lars573
03-28-2008, 12:03 PM
So the figures in the first 3 waves of deluxes are out now.
Wave 1:
Prowl
Bumble Bee
Cybertron mode Optimus
Lockdown

Wave 2:
Blackarachnia
Ratchet

Wave 3:
Soundwave
Jazz
Oil Slick
Snarl

For voyagers
Wave 1:
Cybertron mode Megatron
Bulkhead
Starscream

Grimlock is probably in wave 2, with Lugnut and Earth mode Prime.

Not possible. Watch it again, Megatrons hand was very much open and empty when it left the floor and attached to his wrist.

Avangarde

Hmm you're right, you see him get pulled down in the hand but when the hand reconnects it opens up and he is gone. Megs either dropped him or somehow absorbed him (doubtful as tf's don't normally absorb organics as seen in the earlier episode featuring Blackarachnia), I guess we will find out in a couple of days.

I think there was going to be a break, but just 1 week off after the first 2 or 3 episodes of season 2, it will be on next week.

As for this episode, Megatron was all kinds of badass, and I love how there is now some mystery in the story arc. What did the Allspark do to Suri? What will happen to Sundac and Megatron? What is Starscreams fate? When I saw the ship falling it looked like it was falling towards Dinobot island, I thought Grimlock and crew were going to step in then. Funny how the Autobot ship is now sticking out from a mountain now :cwink:

Just to keep us busy, and wasting gas, more reports are trickling in on other sites that some K-Marts in the Cincinatti area no less, have been putting out a random case here and there of the Transformers Animated toys.

It seems there have been a few random spots of stores doing this of late, but no receipts have been shown yet which is why this is a rumor.

Now if you all went out to your K-mart after the last rumored Animated find there, and found zilch like me, you probably will not go out of your way this time, but we just want to keep you guys informed of what is possibly going on around you...

You can view the origination of this rumor at a thread (http://forums.tformers.com/talk/index.php?showtopic=90675) over at tformers, but as I said there is no visual proof that I was able to uncover.
