i think Nolan's Joker looks AMAZING!!!!! I LOVE IT!! It fits with the dark direction Nolan is going with. i mean c'mon what'd ya expect he was going to look like. a purple suit with a flower shooting out water. WE ALL KNEW he was goona look much, much more darker and sadistic. i for one think it looks amazing! Just when i thought i couldn't get any more excited about this frickin' movie, i was provin wrong! july 2008 can't come fast enough!!!! Nolan is a genius

I would just like to point out that I was one of the few people who accurately predicted that Nolan was going with the "scarred" Joker concept. Normally, I would not boast about such a thing, but i was flamed pretty hard for pushing it.

I'd prefer it if the gash wasn't self-inflicted and rather a byproduct of some accident, which would further damage what's left of the Joker's stable mind. I've never really considered Joker as someone who would even try self-mutilation.

Well if the spoilers are true, its Batman who causes the gash across the Joker's lips (albiet inadvertantly).

Yeah, I wonder about that, too. I figured if Nolan was going for realism, the Joker would be very pale, and have the red around the eyes of a strung-out junkie. The whole white-face thing has me at a loss. Not saying I don't like it, just wondering how it's gonna fit in the storyline.
However, I now have hope that Two-Face won't have purple hair...

Yeah, but it's also interesting when they can come up with realistic, reasonable ways that something like that could happen. If I see a guy who has white skin from the begining of the movie with no explanation, I feel kinda cheated. Now if he uses whiteface make up to cosmetically exagerrate the injuries that Batman gives him, I am a little more satiated.

Well, Joker's skin is bleached white. And his hair is dyed green. Permanently. I think the only thing Nolan would mess with is the red lips. Which can be applied with make-up. As was done in The Dark Knight Returns.

With this new pic, I don't think we can make any assumptions about how this is going down. With the realism of the scarring, but the "painted" look of the white, black, and red on his face, I'm betting that he (the Joker) is using makeup to exagerrate his appearance. I don't think we are going to get the "chemical/acid bath" as an explanation of his appearance. The colors are too contrived to be anything done by accident, butt the scarring looks real.

We don't have any reason to think that it's make-up either. Other then the red.
And a chemical bath wouldn't necessarily make his skin a clean, even white. I'm sure there would be some uneven spots here and there.

maybe he had the makeup on when he got thrown into the chemical bath and the chemicals burned the shape/color of the makeup onto his skin.
perhaps.

He could have been acid-ized....I've said it before, that bottom lip looks like it's...fused or melted down in some way...he have severe chemical burns and cover it up with makeup. The white looks like it's been applied on in my opinion...it's clagged and lumped up in some parts and has gone into some crevasses on his lips if you look closely. Call me whatever but the lips look like they could be his normal burned skin colour and the white applied around it....Or it could be makeup....we'll find out eventually.

If you look at the pic it's undoubtful that a batarang could make a scar like that, it's too big and it's not one long gash, bits of his lips are still joined and some aren't.

I like the look, but I think the pic is a little bland. I'll reserve my total judgement until I see him in different pics or on screen (he IS supposed to get more joker-ish over a period of time, maybe he goes to a plastic surgeon for the wound or something).
He wont be drinking anything citris-y for awhile, thats for sure.

Well that's what happens, I'm only spreading the word.
While he's trying to escape with his goons, he hoisters himself up on a wire to go to the building next to it, Batman throws his batarang, and the batarang mix with the wire slashes his face...could possibly be one side from the batarang and the other side from the wire.

From all the spy reports, pics and general info:
1 - The Joker is grey. This tallies with a previous spy report when you look at the official pic; under the white make-up his skin looks mottled and grey-ish.
2 - He wears messy white and red make up on his face (and flesh-coloured make-up on his neck during the bank job).
3 - He has green hair, and a patchy brown dye-job for the bank robbery.
4 - His face is cut by the end of a loose cable, cut by Batman's batarang.
5 - He evens up the smile with a knife (this is PURE speculation by another poster but it makes sense).
I would say you can pretty much count on all of the above except (5).

This makes sense, as the pic shows grey patches under his right eye.
ALSO.... In that long-distance shot we saw a while back of a man in a purple suit w/green hair, I pointed out that the bottom 1/3 of his face seemed to be regular flesh colored. I postulated that this was so the appliance that would become the "smile" could be attached, or it had just been taken off. Looks like I was posibly right.
Now, the question is why in the world would he have grey skin?

ok one day after all thsi i like the look better.
it is extreme dark and scary. it looks very sick. he looks like a guy who wants to be a clow nbut is to ugly ;)
teh best thing about hes look is what people hate the most. the lipstick. i like how it looks like he did a terrible job. a psycho IMO.
i hope that this isnt just the angel. i hope that i will like him after i see him in the movie.
p.s. i have to admit that i had to get used to hes look. the first time i saw him i didnt like it. it was nto the perfect look for him. but thats normal after so many good manips that were posted here.

I've been thinking long and hard about the look over the weekend. Trying to figure out if I should be disapointed that it doesn't look like he was ripped from the comics. After deep thought I've come to the conlcusion that this is in fact a great movie Joker. Certain things need to be accounted for, before the people who dislike it make a final judgement. First and foremost we have to realise that this is just the face, and one aspect of the Joker that really completes his look is the hair and outfit. If people take a moment to think about this image with the green hair it really makes a difference to how the final look would look drastically improved. Antother factor that at first I was weary about but have grown to accept and to a degree like is the open wound on the cheeks. This is the Joker not Superman, no matter how much damage this man can cause, he is still essentially a human, if he gets injured he will have the scars and damage to prove it. Whatever caused the scars be it zip line etc will be intergral to the story, thus making it an extremely necessary factor of the look.
We need to wait for performance footage before we can moan about the look. I see nothing here that any fan of the classic Joker would really hate.

ghost i agree.
plus is think the angles is perfect for teasing. that kind of angle doenst give you the right idea of how the face looks.
i think they spend hours to make the rihgt pic.
belive me guys when you will see hes face from a normal angle(side ,front) belive me it will look 100% different. of course the lipstick will be the same but the scar around hes mouth will be different.
fact is that some people dont have an idea how perspective works. i found that out when the 1. SR pic was realesed. it was all about the angle. the angle was the reason why the shield looekd so small.

I can't be bothered to read all of the reactions to the "image", though I imagine that it is safe to say that many who would have deplored it were it crafted by a fan have had a Damascean conversion now that it is "official".
It looks dreadful. Not "alarming", or "different", or "shocking". Just...crap. The face looks fat, messy and somehow pathetic. The eyes are sleepy- there is no spark of intelligence there. The mouth is a mess, which I suppose it central to the concept, but it is actually just a distraction from the man behind it, which makes Ledger's job a lot more difficult. Why is their paint smeared around the mouth? What does that say about "The Joker's" character? That it is ruined.
I am truly, bitterly disappointed. This could not be any worse.

Oh! I think this really has split the vote straight down the middle. I love the concept, but I agree that the execution is puzzlingly low key. There was no need to reveal the Joker this early, and I would have preferred the promotion photograph to have been the cackling, demonic ledger Joker in all his glory. While I'm personally delighted by the design I think it's a shame that Nolan seems to have (deliberately?) disappointed a lot of fans. And I'm convinced now that he's chosen the gashed smile route because he couldn't get Sean Penn. Ledger doesn't look like the Joker, so he's changed the look of the Joker to compensate. To which I repeat for the umpteenth time: Ryan bloody Gosling!!!

I'm beginning to like it a lot more but ONLY on the condition that he won't look like that the entire film, and the scarring is subtle and flesh-toned underneath the make-up. We also don't know if his lips are permanently red under that make-up.
As an idea I think it's got a lot of legs, and will make a BIG impression on general audiences. It also can also be made to fit the character of the Joker quite nicely, despite the initial dissonance of scarring and messy make-up on the Joker. Remember we will probably get to the the 'classical' Joker before the mouth accident.
People should also accept that it IS a shiiity photograph taken on a weird angle with a deliberately vague lighting and posing.

People should also accept that it IS a shiiity photograph taken on a weird angle with a deliberately vague lighting and posing.
But it is all we have, and I think that it looks really, really dreadful. And neither the angle of the camera nor the brightness of the light alters the fact that a truly misguided concept lies beneath the makeup. All of the phoney leaked pictures were better than this, and I curse myself for assuming that Nolan would not be so arrogant as to ruin such a legendary character in such a ham fisted fashion.
I don't want to provoke a fight here, and I am genuinely pleased for those of you who like this concept (that is, those of you who instantly liked it, rather than felt that you had to find a way to live with it), but I have had all enthusiasm knocked right out of me. It really does seem to recall The Penguin in Batman Returns- an indulgent realisation of the sterile imagination of a complacent director.
The rule seems to be that we get one proper Batman film every eighteen years. I can only hope that I haven't outgrown this particular quirk of interest by the time I am 41...

There was no need to reveal the Joker this early, and I would have preferred the promotion photograph to have been the cackling, demonic ledger Joker in all his glory.
That would have made people happier but it also would have been kind of boring, predictable no? Even if this design only appears in one scene of the film (which I think it might e.g. a climax confrontation with Uber Joker) it's still a perfect teaser image for the reactions it provokes. Similair to BB's first image of the Tumbler it makes people think 'wtf are they doing here?'

Well yes, but I feel a bit like I've opened my Christmas presents on December 23rd. I guess I shouldn't be on the boards at all!
:yay:
I agree that the idea was a good teaser concept, and as I said I love the design itself. But wouldn't you agree that it does seem like a deliberate two fingers up by Nolan to people who favour the "classic" look?
Keyser Soze
05-21-2007, 07:49 AM
What, are you saying you assumed Nolan wouldn't screw up? Are you saying you were actually optimistic before this? Funny, I seem to remember you being the resident malcontent in many a positive discussion, long before news of The Joker's appearance was leaked.
And once again, I find it hilarious that - based on a SET OF LIPS - Nolan suddenly becomes "arrogant", "ham fisted" and "complacent", and all of a sudden this isn't a "proper Batman film". Forget about the cast, the writing, the storyline, the OVERALL CHARACTERISATION of The Joker, all that stuff we've yet to see. The lips are wrong, and so Nolan has undone a decade-long career with a 100& hit rate and - more specifically - undone all the great work he did in "Batman Begins".
Me? I don't think the character is "ruined". He's different, yes. But look at the whole marketing campaign:
"It's like I always say, you don't know what a man's really made of until you peel away his face piece by piece."
"Trying to cheat a cheater? You make me smile."
"People always ask me about my charming, boyish smile. Jessica used to love it. She was the loneliest girl in high school, and my first big kiss..."
It's creepy. It's unnerving. It's The Joker. And though it's still too early to really tell, those initial lines of "dialogue" from The Joker seem to be an early indication that the personality of The Joker has been nailed. The Joker not looking how you like, and the character being "ruined", are two entirely different things.

Then you remember selectively: I have been negative about some things an positive about many others. I think this is healthy. I have always described C. Nolan as a "good director".

Cheapens the film for me bit.
I think since Nolan is British, he can't tell which American actors are schlock to a lot of people. Both Hall AND Roberts are television schlock.
How would you islanders like Benny Hill cast as Commisioner Gordon

New Heath Ledger Joker image is a fake!
The movie world is duped…again!
21 May 2007 11:34am
It was one of the biggest stories of the weekend, but we’ve got some bad news for Batfans – there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the latest pic of Heath Ledger in his Joker guise is yet another fake.
If it is indeed a scam, it’s surely one of the most elaborate hoaxes in cinematic history, a gag worthy of the Clown Prince Of Crime himself.
If you haven’t already heard, here’s the story. At the weekend, what appeared to be a viral marketer littered a comic-book store in Southern California with playing cards, daubed with the phrase I Believe In Harvey Dent Too, a play on Warner Brothers’ official ibelieveinharveydent teaser site domain name.
Now, here’s where it gets really interesting. Fanboys who typed in ibelieveinharveydenttoo were sent to a new site, encouraging them to send off their email address, to receive a code which would allow them to gradually reveal a Bat-picture, hidden behind the official teaser.
Cleverly, whoever created the site (and we’ll prove in a moment that it wasn’t WB) didn’t announce that the image was Heath Ledger as the Joker, making fanboys even more desperate to see it.
Eventually – and trust us, it took a long time, suspicious in itself considering how many people were eventually attempting to reveal the image, once the word spread – this picture appeared.
Looks good, right? Well, before you get too overexcited, consider the following two points…
Warner Brothers’ first wave of this elaborate viral marketing campaign was to litter one comic-book store with home-made cards. Which is quite small-scale, even for a guerilla marketing campaign.
The official teaser’s full address is http://ibelieveinharveydent.warnerbros.com/, note the warnerbros part of the address. The Joker’s address? http://www.ibelieveinharveydenttoo.com/
Both facts were suspicious enough to peak our interest, but not conclusive. After all, even if Warners did litter only one comic-book store with cards, it worked. And perhaps they’d left the official branding off the new site to make it seem more anarchic, more Joker-esque.
Still, it was enough to make us dig further. And we didn’t like what we found.
A simple WHOIS search revealed that, whilst ibelieveinharveydent was registered by Warner Brothers on 11 May, ibelieveinharveydenttoo was created by a private registration company, Domains by Proxy, Inc. on 14 May. We doubt Warner Brothers would go that far to keep their part in the enterprise a secret (after all, we sort of know they'll be behind the eventual Joker reveal).
Which, obviously, is a massive disapointment. But still, keep your eye on Total Film for the first image of the real Joker. We won’t report it ‘til we’ve seen it.http://www.totalfilm.com/movie_news/new_heath_ledger_joker_image_is_a_fake! (http://www.totalfilm.com/movie_news/new_heath_ledger_joker_image_is_a_fake%21)

I really don't understand how anyone could finalise a conclusion of the Joker so hastily from a single image. I think many assumed the first ever picture released of him would be a full on head/body shot, complete with everything typical of the Joker. Why would you want that? go look at an image from the comics for that kind of justification. We have been given an unexpected and frankly unique look at what to expect in TDK. It's a dodgy image, because it's meant to be, Nolan wouldn't release such a secretive factor of the movie without thought into fan reaction. He hasn't included the green hair for a reason, thats the defining feature of the character and releasing that would essentially spoil the suprise. The angle of the photo as well is confusing, what may appear, chubby or round is merely an illusion of the perspective.
I can understand the distaste for the picture, I really can, but I feel people are hating on it mainly because they were expecting a picture showing, 'the comic joker', something that won't be revealed till closer the release. As far as the character goes, filming has only just begun and we have already got a solid idea that the personality and traits have been nailed, just from a few lines of promotion.

The way I got my head to a place where I was cool with this official image was quite easy, inspite of my ranking it a 2 on a scale of 10.
In a word - "Jonathan".
Where Chris fails, his brother will pick up the slack. The real Joker is going to come alive in those literary in-between places. He lives in the Arkham font we saw on the playing cards and the so far pretty spot on character lines we got from the viral site. If the things he says and dooes are actually really funny and actually really scary in this movie then this look will work just fine.
A John Wayne Gacy painting.
Also, if he looked like an Alex Ross Joker, we would like him too much and root for him. The pretty one in this movie should be Bats. Joker should be a piece of sh** that we really want to see destroyed.
To this end, I believe I will be stimulated to a beautiful frontier of pleasure.

I can assure that in regard to how my beloved comic books are translated, I am the first to scrutinize and analyse in an attempt to justify an aspect that doesn't accurately relate to it's source, but I can fish out what is altered for story purposes and what is changed merely to update a look to fit in with the films tone, and this image serves every purpose with in the context of the movie.

2) I didn't want an explanation. I like The Joker's classical appearance, but agree that it is not realistic. I thought that the best solution was not to address the issue at all, rather than alter the character or his appearance.
3) Well, I would have said Christopher Nolan. This somehow seems out of character for him. I wouldn't have guessed that he would misjudge a character by toning it up, rather than down.

Christopher Eccleston I think is far too old looking.
I want Joker to be Batman's equal in as many ways as possible, so I feel Joker should be of a similar age to Bruce. Also you have to remember this is still in the Begins timeline, so the characters are all essentially younger. That's particuarly why I was a fan of Ryan Phillipe for Dent, I always saw TDK as introducing Harvey as the young hotshot D.A.

1) Christoper Eccleston. A damn fine actor.
Can't argue with that

Yes, that was unforgivable.
In fact, I will say that as upset as I am with Heath's look it is not as bad as Raimi's rape of the goblin. At least you can see Heaths face.
Raimi would have put joker in a big, clunky mask-helmet that looked like a clown power ranger.
And (please don't start on this guys) I'm even less upset about Heath's look than Nicholson. Nicholson had a big pregnant gut...looked like tweedle dee to me.
Basically on a scale of 1 - 10 (looks alone)
Raimi Goblin: 1
B89 Joker: 3
Nolan joker: 4
IN MY OPINION!
ghost_x
05-21-2007, 11:10 AM
I have to agree on all points, I can see where Raimi was going with GG and the whole Goblin suit being a Soliders armour, but something along the way messed up, and in the end the most appropiate and realistic option would be to approach the traditional look.
Nicholson although delivering a perfect performance, did look odd at times and resembled BoBo the clown rather than Joker the clown prince of crime.
I think Ledger in full get up will knock this one out the park

Also, and I know this is a horrible and ruthless comparison, and I'm not even 100% certain, but in Batman and Robin Schumacher, there was a gang who dressed in neon (no suprise there), and I believe the leader had a skull mask. If i remember it actually closely resembles Ledger's Joker.
If anyone could find a picture that would be fantastic.

You know you guys should have seen this coming. How can you be upset with Ledger's look when he doesn't, has never, and never will, look like the Joker? Honestly, once he was cast, what were you expecting? A prosthetic chin? Lord have mercy.
Nolan has cast someone who looks nothing like the Joker, and his decision is based purely on the kinetic energy this particular actor can bring to the role. So when you think about it, the make-up is a minor concern. I thought the Batman Begins batsuit was a pile of ****e, but I liked Bale's take on Bruce Wayne. See where I'm going with this?

I think alot of people were thinking that he would have a prosthetic nose and chin. I agree with you entirely, the idea of unexpected casting is to suprise the audience with something sporadic and unique, I would rather have a new take on the Joker rather than a rehash starring Crispin Glover, merely because he resembles the Joker.

Hi Reg. Man, you're in a bad mood. I can see why. I'm not thta fond of the look, it looks too messy, grotesque and over-the-top (which, as you say, is unusual for Nolan). I've noticed alot of posters commenting on the vibe from the joker pic, that he's going to be a more creepy and sadistic character and so on, but my point is that no matter what he looks like these should be elements of his persona. Even in his usual "comic" guise the joker is grotesque, just not in such and obvious, and in my opinion, cheap way. I believe if there was one place in Nolan's world where he was going to offer up something of the fantastical, it really should've been with the joker

I've read little excerpts (you all probably have, too) about how Heath Ledger has gone on record about the Joker. The main thing Heath and Nolan have been stressing is HIS EYES.
What I've always thought was creepiest about the Joker is that the smile on his face is frozen (going all the way to 'The Man who Laughs') and his eyes are DEAD. Lifeless. Evil.
This makes the smile ironic and scary as hell.
This is also a Joker we haven't seen yet. Jack Nicholson was great, but this is going all the way back to the very beginning.
Another broad, flamboyant Joker characterization would be suicide for any actor (countless Nicholson comparisons) and death for Nolan (no originality).
I really feel good about this. I think we're in for a wild ride. A brand new Joker that's true to his roots.

That's not going to stop anyone from comparing him to Nicholson. Ledger will be the 3rd live-action Joker in about 40 years the character has been on-screen. Comparisons are unavoidable.

Because we all know Nolan was crucified the first time for utilizing many elements from the comics, and is doing the same for the story of TDK...

Sure, but there's been consensus that Ledger's Joker needed to set itself apart from Nicholson's Joker, both visually and in personality, so it didn't seem like a shameless retread. After all, there's no point in re-doing the Joker unless you're going to bring something new.

I saw a consensus in a Joker that set itself apart from the others in the same vain as Bale with Keaton, and Craig with Brosnan.
Not once did I read a huge vote in favor of making Joker's look completely different than Nicholson and Romero. Deviations so it'd stand on it's own, yes, but not this.

Eh, there was a lot of deviation in that. There was a consensus that the Joker had to set itself apart, but there was a lot of discussion as to how. That discussion has now spilled over into this debate.
Not once did I read a huge vote in favor of making Joker's look completely different than Nicholson and Romero. Deviations so it'd stand on it's own, yes, but not this.
Well, Ledger's Joker is hardly completely different than those other two. They share the basics - white skin, red lips, green hair. Okay, we've got to that point.
Now, Nicholson. Obviously, this Joker does not have the same style as Nicholson. But Nicholson's Joker also had a scarred smile, and the script called for facial scarring along the cheeks. A permasmile Joker also had no precedent in the history of the character.
As for Romero, I'd say Ledger's Joker compares favorably. Ledger's Joker is like the darker, grittier cousin of the Romero look. Romero looked very clownish, with a broadly drawn red smile that extended beyond the corners of his cheeks. Well, Ledger's Joker face does just that... it extends beyond the cheeks and ends in clown-like dots.

First of all, I don't want to see anymore Brosnan vs Craig threads or posts, I think I've read about 10000 of them, all with the same BS. 95% of those posters haven't seen all the previous Bonds, that's what I still think.
Second, I'm starting to really like this Joker look, and I think this is not the way we'll see him first. It looks like he's "gashed", after his first encounter with Batman? As long has he has green hair & acts like Joker, it's all fine with me.
Third, some fanboys still think that Nicholson IS the Joker, he can't do anything wrong. Even today, I read remarks on the IMDB boards that Ledger is actually gay and that he'll never be able to play Joker. WTF ?
I keep saying that during the entire run of the Batman comics, Joker has changed more than once. Is it so hard to realise that there is no "ultimate Joker" ? I'm starting think that Arkham asylum serves as a huge inspiration for this movie, and he sure looks freaky in that one, but it's just one comicbook out of a ton others.
Fourth: see also my first statement. Yes, Aaron Eckhart is blonde. So what ???

Thank you for your kind opening statement:yay: . Rational and fair is what I do - my other half complains I do it too much, that I should go nuts more often. I also try to be an optimistic chap, so I'm gonna see what other snippets we get (new Batsuit, modified Tumbler, more Dent stuff) before getting too upset. And if your expectations have been considerably lowered by this news, how great would it be if the movie excels in all other departments and cancels out that disappointment about his look?

As for the April 1st side, reading the first words down the unintelligent side gave the message "See You in December". The side was assumed to be released by WB, this site IS WB (too much support to not be fake), therefore the message is real.

Of course I understand that, but even without the vertical text, the side had basic grammatical errors and a massively stilted style. We know there to be a connection between the side and the image; I think that both are crap, so I prefer to hope that they are both fake. We shall see. But I don't think that anything is exactly obvious, here.

Hmmm. Well, could it be that the side and the image are both genuine and both fake at the same time? The side is obviously too badly written to bare any relation to anything in the real script. Perhaps that dreadful image is a parody of some manips floating around the net? Would anyone care to pass me a straw that I might grasp?

This marketing campaign is ****ing genius... hands down the coolest, most innovative idea I've ever seen for a film. It's completely in-character of The Joker as well, which is neat in itself. It's like he's really out there, messing with us. Good job, Warner Bros. Keep up the good work.

The theory is floating around BoF. It seems plausible. I mean, the Joker has a picture of himself, then withdraws it within a day of its complete revealing. Then he laughs at us and says "see you in December."

new vehicle pics
MAYBE cast interviews (Goyer, Jonah Nolan, Eckhart, Gyllenhaal, Ledger?).

I based this on an earlier photo-manip, so it's a manip of a manip. Not sure who did the original, but it's very good. I was wanting to see what the Joker design that was revealed might look like when he is smiling. The question is, if the Joker looks like this when a better picture is revealed and he is smiling, would the people that hate the design feel differently? Is it just a bad picture, or a bad design altogether in your eyes?
