One thing about the new Joker image... Not only in recent pictures the scars look more discrete than the first image, but the lipstick isn´t out of the lip area anymore, except for the corners... Is it possible the first image we saw was a test, and not the finished look? It´s not unusual that stuff released early doesn´t look like the final product, there are trailers with unfinished FX and scenes that don´t make it to the movie.

It might just be the light, but The Joker's visage generally seems much more organic. The white areas are a good representation of whitened skin, and there is no contrast against the ears or throat. His mouth appears more likely to be natural scar tissue than paint.
Had I seen that picture in isolation, I would have every confidence that, with the exception of his eye makeup, that was The Joker's "natural" face.

Yeah, well, it´s not unheard of the first image not paying any favors to an element of the movie. I think Superman´s shield in SR looks just fine, but in the first picture, cuz of the angle and lighting, it was almost invisible. That pic also didn´t reflect at all the overall look of the film.

"He is here in London filming the latest episode of the Batman franchise, The Dark Knight. (Mr. Bale, as it happens, plays Batman; Mr. Ledger plays the Joker.) It is a physically and mentally draining role — his Joker is a “psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy” he said cheerfully — and, as often happens when he throws himself into a part, he is not sleeping much.
Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night,” he said. “I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.” One night he took an Ambien, which failed to work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing.
He carries his interests around with him, and his kitchen table was awash in objects: a chess set, assorted books, various empty glasses, items of clothing. Here too was his Joker diary, which he began compiling four months before filming began. It is filled with images and thoughts helpful to the Joker back story, like a list of things the Joker would find funny. (AIDS is one of them.) Mr. Ledger seemed almost embarrassed that the book had been spotted, as if he had been caught trying to get extra credit in school."

Say whatever you want about Ledger´s casting, his enthusiasm and passion for the role is amazing. I don´t wanna gossip, but before his divorce there were rumors that his "always in character" dedication to playing Joker was bothering his wife and causing a strain to their relationship.

Yeah, parents complained about BB too. I remember Ebert saying in an interview, I think it was on the tonight show with Leno, that he got a letter from a mother criticizing BB for being too dark and serious for her 7 year old. Ebert defended the film saying its not meant for small children and there are other films she should have seen specifically for families.
I wonder what parents are gonna say about Joker in TDK.

And yes TDK is seemingly much darker then BB, and even BB I think is too dark for some kids. Even though I was 6 and watching Robocop and Terminator when I was little. But a lot of little kids won't be able to handle TDK. Joker will scare the piss out of em.

As much as I like to hear Heath's emersion into the role of the Joker, I am always under the belief that method acting is really really wrong. Mostly because it's not a helthy thing to practice. You should only be your character on screen, not off it. Psychologicaly, the effects of it can probably mess you up somewhat. It's indeed a little crazy. Acting is called acting for a reason.

People use to think the same about fantasy movies...LOTR. I remember back in 99 telling people I think it could get oscars and everyone was like "no way" but that sure turned out differently. As well back in the day people did not think Sci-Fi's would ever get nominations and Sigourney Got one, for Aliens.
I see where your coming from bro but you never know. Times do change.

Well I'm not against researching your character and finding out what makes him tick. It's the becoming the character outside the film that worries me.

I've been utilizing a method approach for my current play. The results have been very rewarding. Becoming the total embodiment of a character inside and out, mentally and physically, is crucial.

Hahaha! Very close to my situation. I'm playing Dennis in Kenneth Lonergan's This Is Our Youth who, coincidentally, is a drug dealer and user. Not to mention he's got one hell of a temper and quite a mouth.
We were out one night and our stage manager asked me a question. Apparently (she says) I got real snappy with her like the character and I didn't even realize it. She was just staring at me and I'm like ???.

No way! Hahaha... very cool. It's an excellent play. The dialogue is so funny. Me and the kid playing Warren both did a scene from it in our Acting II class and we loved it. So when they decided to do the play, we had to try out -- and got the same roles! I was ecstatic. :word:

Besides Michael Jackson, I usually don't let an artist's private life influence my judgement. But of course, I, too, like to hear that they are nice people.
For instance, Gary Oldman from all the accounts sounds like a terrific guy and on top of that he's one of the greatest living actors, that's ideal.
On the other hand, I hear terrible stories about Kubrick treating people like s***t, but he still is my favourite director.

I love that Bale have a secretive attitude towards his work. Everythiung you should know and feel about a movie, should be right in the mvoie. No need to jinx it with interviews and opinions about your own work. Creating expectatives that might work on the words more than on the screen. Audiences with no ideaof what a movie/character will be is always open to everything they're watching for the first time. With no pre-conceived ideas.

I can't wait to see what Miller does with The Joker. His Batman is a total psycho. Just imagine what Mistah J is going to be like.
Thanks to your post, I'll check it out now. Lee has apparently changed his Joker, the nose is much less pointy and IMO it looks much better now.

That's one and only thing i hated about Lee's Joker, his ridiculously long nose! it didn't suit him at all. Glad to hear and see that it's been changed...

I like Lee's Joker as well as Sale's. Well, Sale's is a bit inconsistent. I have both the Hush Joker action figure and the Long Halloween one and both are sweet as hell. But Brian Bolland's Joker is the best I've seen. That shot in TKJ where he looks at Batman right when he arrives in the theme park... priceless. THAT is Joker.

^^^ I prefer a Joker like this one as opposed to the one where his features are too exagerated. Tim Sale's horse teeth or Lee huge pointy nose are not my thing.
I don't like Lee's or Sale's Joker either. Just too exaggerated, a bit is fine, but I think they go far too over the top. This is one of my favorites.

^^^I'm not saying it wouldn't be interesting as heck, but it's Heath's own personal character study of the Joker. It's his diary. Maybe not in a traditional sense, but it is nonetheless, and I would suspect, and totally understand if he wanted to keep it private.

No. Just writing the series that Lee is drawing. The design is just the Miller model.

As young as he is with all his hard work in his own country then to only be in the states for about five years, two years nonstop, and how great he's become in such a short time. I think this Joker role is going to take him to the top. He's an inspiration to aspiring actors and directors. He's risking his own health to give us fans a real inside look into the mind of Joker. You can't help but be astounded at his performance. I really think that TDK is going to be a huge hit thanks to Bale and Ledger's work with Nolan's genius alone.
 I'll definately be one of the first in like for TDK.

What can I say about Heath after reading that article? The casting choice that seemed to make no sense at all in the very beginning keeps on appearing like it could never happen with any other person. Not just reading the comics for inspiration, but actually making a personal Joker book with notes? That's exactly the kind of stuff I love to hear! This is great, and the fact he's sleep deprived can only help him act more loony on screen, even though I feel bad about that.

Finally someone pointed out the lip area thing. I was greatly relieved when I noticed. Fortunately, there are comics where the red colour goes outside a little in the corners, so I for one don't mind that much.
I think the first image in May was nothing but a test. No Joker image since then has even been close to that gruesome. Instead, there has been some adjustments. This is undoubtely the best Joker image from The Dark Knight so far.

I don't think the first image was a test in May. I'm not saying it isn't but thats just your opinion, there's really nothing to prove that at all. Nolan and his team wouldn't put a test photo out of the Joker. They are very clear in what they want and want to show to the public. Nolan has ALWAYS been this way and Nolan has even talked about how he wanted the Joker from the start! I think many of the Jokers pictures look different because he is going to look different throughout the film and uses make up maybe on make up to hide his true look.
We'll find out when the movie comes out but you can clearly see he looks different in many different photos that have been realeased and from spy reports! Were past the point of debating weather if he uses make up or his look changes through out the film, because we know that is the case!

The Dark Knight begins with the Joker robbing a huge bank (we’ve seen photos of this everywhere). The bank is where the mob and all the gangs in Gotham keep all of their money. The Joker takes this money and holds it “ransom”. The Joker then says to the mob and the gangs of Gotham, “If you help me take down Batman, you’ll get your money back. If not, I’m going to burn it all.” This is how the Joker assembles his army to take down Batman.

Thanks for this.
The red changed length and depth because he applied his makeup. Either only for a short time before he goes permaf***ed or throughout the whole movie. Or the shot you're seeing of him in the car is after the permableaching and the shot you saw before was when he put on his face himself. It's not so hard to grasp the idea that he paints his face for bank robberies and such and when he goes swimming in chemicals thanks to Bats he just happens to be wearing his facepaint which permanently stains him with the colors (red lips, black eyes, whiter skin). Just a few possibilities.
