Supes spins the earth backwards in both Superman and Donner's Superman II. Which version is superior?

IMO it sucked both times. But I'll go with the original Superman. It's far more poignant and emotional than the II DC version.

This is one of the reasons I didn't like the DC as much. It was the exact same thing{^less emotional}

I think it is handled better in the DC because it makes more sense. In S:TM, they reference destruction occuring, yet it seems like nothing happens when Supes sees Lois. It doesn't make sense. It is better in the DC, but I wish they would have made a new ending.

I LOVE the shot in the Supes II vresion where he smiling as he flies around the earth

I don't, it comes off as "Heh, it doesn't matter how bad stuff goes, I can just turn back time and nothing will be wrong".

You just reminded me of that goofy smile he has right before he realisis Lois died. I love that bit.

The original easily. Atleast it doesn't seem like he's just turning back time for the hell of it.

LOL, he knows he has the ultimate reset button. He's probably laughing at Perry trying to brush his teeth.

The inclusion of that shot of Reeves' smiling is surely only because Donner didn't want to re-use footage from the original. However, it works for me.

I think as filmmaking it works better in SII: TDC. I think at the end of S:TM he should have just gotten there in time to save Lois's bacon. In SII: TDC it really comes off as SUperman trying to rectify his mistake by making all the bad stuff never happen.

Completely agree. It was much more effectively used in the original. At least in STM when he turned back time, the way the scene plays out is that after Lois dies in Superman's arms, he pushes himself to his limits and does something he would normally never do (or possibly didn't even know he was capable of) to bring back the women he loved. Superman literally pushed Heaven and Earth to bring Lois back, which made the ending not only very emotional but visually stunning.

The way it played out in II just seemed silly. It had none of the weight or emotion of the first films ending. I've said it before, best decision Donner ever made was moving II's ending to STM.

I would say casting Christopher Reeve and hiring John Williams were better decisions.

Hahah! :yay:

I stand corrected. One of the best decisions he made while making the film. :cwink:

I'd rather it ended this way. (http://www.howitshouldhaveended.com/Divx%20links/Superman.html)

The first film's is better. Emotionally powerful and had a better reason.

I liked the STM version better... like House_of_El said, it was emotionally powerful

I thought the S:TM turning back time was better. It was much more powerful and emotional, disobeying his father by interfering with humanity to save the woman he loves. Plus, he only turns back a short amount of time. Doing it at the end of the Superman 2 for as long as he did, rendered the entire movie meaningless. And seeing that smile on his face while he's turning back time is kinda creepy.

Even though the concept of reversing time by reversing the earths orbit is stupid, the first movie one is much better.

Superman The Movie was done way better. IMO the DC sucked a big one. That movie was terrible.

The turning back time in the Donner cut makes no sense whatsoever.

There was no other ending, dude. I've said this a million times! Donner never actually completed his Superman II. What we got was their best attempt to present a completed film with what they had. HOWEVER, they could have gotten creative like our friend RW:

But does Superman turn back time or simply travel back to the past?

It's funny because that is exactly how Superman: The Movie and Superman II were originally going to play out, because of course Donner never intended to have Superman turning back the world in both versions.
