Jeff Bridges has joined the cast of Iron Man, the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment, says The Hollywood Reporter. Jon Favreau is directing the movie, which Paramount Pictures will distribute.

Robert Downey Jr. stars as armor-clad superhero Iron Man and his alter ego, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark. Bridges will portray a confidant and close business associate of Stark, a longtime employee at defense contractor Stark Industries who plays a major role in shaping Stark's life.

"We've been talking to Jeff for long time," Marvel's president of production Kevin Feige said. "He's excited about doing a movie like this, and we're excited to have him in this particular role. There are many facets to this character which I can't discuss, but looking at the spectrum of all of Jeff's roles, this fits in nicely with the man who played 'Starman,' 'Tucker,' 'Big Lebowski' with a little bit 'Tron' thrown in.

"This rounds out our ensemble, and I think it's one of the strongest casts ever assembled for one of our films."

Bridges' boarding marks the fourth Academy Award-recognized actor signed on for the Iron Man cast, which in addition to Oscar nominee Downey includes nominee Terrence Howard and Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow.

Filming on Iron Man is scheduled to begin in March in Los Angeles with a planned release date of May 2, 2008.

Her only decent or memorable role was being a murder victim in Se7en.

She plays the same person in every role. Better actresses can disappear into their characters.

She simply doesn't have any onscreen charisma. I'd prefer a real actress like Emily Watson or Cate Blanchette. Or at least some eye candy like Isla Fisher. Paltrow is neither compelling to watch or eye candy.

Yeah atleast Paltrow isn't from the teen drama school of acting like those two. Where they just stare doey eyed at someone while they talk dialogue at them.

I wonder if his going to have Mandarin pee on his rug. It really tied the room together:woot:

It say's that he's a confidant and close business associate of Tony's, I wonder and this is just wild speculation, that since they are keeping his characters name a secret, that Jeff may be playing either Obidiah Stane or Justin Hammer, who for stories sake is a friend in the beginning but turns on Tony later in the movie and becomes a business rival, just thinking out load.

Here is my question. Who is he playing? They said in the press release that the cast is now rounded out. Yet no announcement on Manderin, and it you remember Farveu said that Manderin would not be the way he was in the comics becuae to have him like that would be "silly" or "offensive". Could bridges be manderin, or perhaps Starks Sr., or who was Starks main busness competition, the guy who started the iron wars? I can't remember his name.

I like Jeff. He's in several of my favorite films including Tron, Tucker & The Big Lebowski. They guy can act and usually doesn't put himself in these kind of films. People questioned how Marvel would handle their first studio film with Iron man...well they're doing superb so far. Surely much of it has to do with the respect Jon Favreau has in the industry.

I know that Jon confirmed that Obadiah Stane would be a character last summer during an AICN interview. If they do take that approach with the character, it may be interesting to see. Come to think of it, I could see the character being written that way. Stane would play mind games in the comics, and I could see something were he establishes a friendship with Stark, only to turn on him later.

I must say, this Iron Man movie is shaping up to be a good one. We just need some news on the villains front.

I highly doubt that Bridges will be The Mandarin.

When Fav's made those remarks about his idea for the Mandarin, I'm pretty sure that he just meant he won't have him portrayed in a way that could be seen as derogatory; a cliched stereotype that could be considered offensive in this day and age to some folk.

As mentioned previously, Bridges could be Stane or Hammer.

Or a character invented entirely for the movie.

Or the Unicorn. ;)

It's anyones guess really.

Marvel is definitely on a roll. I think DC is taking their time and making sure they get all the proper pieces in place (writers, directors, producers, actors) instead of just throwing anything and everything out there all at once.

I still think the big advantage is that Marvel can wheel and deal and be creative with any studio they wish. DC is owned and locked in to one studio. DC properties find the path of least resistance. Marvel's new slate is entirely self produced and the company itself hinges on their quality and performance. Iron Man HAS to be good. The WB would LIKE DC stuff to be good but it's just a minor subsidiary to them. That's a huge difference.

However, why do all these guys look like Models except for Stark. I think it should be the other way around. I didn't know Happy Hogan, Pepper Potts and James Rhodes were so damn good-looking. Stark should be the studd, Happy is a scrapper, Rhodes is the no non-sens right hand man, Potts is the charming average secretary. two antagonists for an origin movie would be too cluttered (unless they go for the batman begins approach and keep him strictly in the business world)

for those not in the know, sal was introduced in ellis'/granov's iron man and since they're using the granov armor, it wouldn't be a far shot saying they're using parts of that origin.

he's def a father figure, looks the part, can act the part (almost the dude 2.0)

I wouldn't think of it as a trick really. The two most likely candidates for the character he'll be playing are either Howard Stark or Obadiah Stane. After that the next most likely would be a re-imagining of the Yin Sen character that helps Tony build the armor in captivity in the 1st place. True he's not asian and the stand-in character's name may not even be Yin Sen, but it would be a minor alteration in my opinion as opposed to say, making the Mandarin a non-asian. Justin Hammer is unlikely since there's no point to have both him and Stane in the same movie(they're essentially the same kind of character) and Stane has already been confirmed as being in the movie. Hogan is possible but I have a hard time imagining Bridges going for such a minor role. So that's my 2 cents. Am I making sense or am I just whistling Dixie out of my butt?

IM is really shaping up to be Marvel's BB. It sounds as if it will be amazing, or at least I should hope so. With a big ensemble cast like this, you'd expect it to be a landslide. I've enjoyed Jeff in everything I've seen him in so far. They say he rounds out the ensemble. He plays a confidant and close business associate of Stark... and Mandarin has yet to be cast. I hope that's just drug talking. I'd like to see them casting someone who really stands out, not an unknown.

The cast just keeps getting better. Bridges really is a great choice to have for the film, as well as a great actor. Also...Jon mentioned on his group that he won't be playing Happy.

He did? Do you have the link to that??? Jon says the "he" won't be playing Happy or that Bridges won't be playing Happy??? I'd appreciate the link because that would really clear up some speculation. Kevin James for Happy. :)

you know, i don't think he'll be obidiah, his dad, happy, or even the mandarin

two antagonists for an origin movie would be too cluttered (unless they go for the batman begins approach and keep him strictly in the business world)

i think he'll be:

Sal Kennedy

for those not in the know, sal was introduced in ellis'/granov's iron man and since they're using the granov armor, it wouldn't be a far shot saying they're using parts of that origin.

he's def a father figure, looks the part, can act the part (almost the dude 2.0)

maybe favs will tweak it so he works for stark as an advisor?

Wow! Nice find, good comparison pics and everything. I wouldn't be surprised if this theory of yours pans out and turns out to be true. Although, the absense of any major info about Bridges character in the press release is a bit suspicious and slightly indicative if you're looking hard enough. It does seem like kind of a Batman Beginsy thing to do.

Oh, whatever... THE DUDE IS IN IRON MAN!!!

yeah, the sal thing is a long shot. the press release was obviously sketchy on purpose. hopefully it's not a bait and switch ala ducard in batman begins

Look at this thread in the Iron Man group. Favreau comments on the 1st page that the right "guess" (about Bridges) was made in this thread. There were several names thrown out but the only person who used the word "guess" was in regards to "the mandarin". Otherwise every other name was thrown out there. Jon is being funny. LOL The only guesses are above his post obviously.

(reposted from my other thread)

Here are the names mentioned or guessed:

Justin Hammer

Obadiah Stane

Edwin Jarvis

Howard Stark

The Mandarin

LOL so we're back to square one.

I gave you all a big fat hint a day early and nobody even came close. You guys are slipping. And, BTW, he's not playing Happy.

Seriously. Dunst could out-act Holmes while being bludgeoned to death, lol. :woot:

Gwyneth Paltrow can out-act Holmes, and she's in this Iron Man film.

You call the Mandarin a 'business associate'? Yeesh.

Anyway, after John Wayne and Jonathan Pryce, I'm sick of white men playing Asians.

It say's that he's a confidant and close business associate of Tony's, I wonder and this is just wild speculation, that since they are keeping his characters name a secret, that Jeff may be playing either Obidiah Stane or Justin Hammer, who for stories sake is a friend in the beginning but turns on Tony later in the movie and becomes a business rival, just thinking out load.

i thought the same thing upon hearing the news. :woot:

Ok after some thinking about Jeff Bridges secretive role in the upcoming Iron Man movie. The rumor mill has him pegged to be a white Mandarin much like Ra Al Gaul in Batman Begins. Here on SHH it's thought that he could be Happy,Stane,Jarvis,Justin Hammer, Sal, or even Howard Stark. His role is described as "He will portray a close business associate of Tony Stark. A confidant and longtime employee at defense contractor Stark Industries, Bridges' character plays a major role in shaping Tony Stark's life." which got me to thinking that Bridges could be playing a laser expert for the defense divison of Stark Industries. To get to my point I think Bridges could be playing Arthur Parks a.k.a The Living Laser. Since The Living Laser has ties to The Mandarin and the Mandarin's Minions. This could be a crazy thought but I think it could be a decent direction for a side villian for Mandy. Which would make him play a role like Scarecrow in BB, or he could be a herald for the Mandarin announcing his upcoming arrival.

Doubt they would rip off the twist from Batman Begins when the character is already so similar to Batman.

^ Favreau said he's NOT Happy so you can cross that out.
