Carolina Panthers played good and won in their first pre-season game last week. Only pre-season, but things look good. Taye Biddle should be kept, just not sure where he would be at on the WR depth chart. Could be as high as 3 or low as 5th, as we have Steve Smith (#1) and that rookie guy (Jarret?) who could be #2 or #3. Colbert and Carter need to step it up for that #2 or #3 spot.

The reports out of training camp of Matt Stover’s demise were greatly exaggerated. There is no denying the 18-year veteran’s few misses in camp, but there’s no overlooking of his perfect performance in the first preseason game for Baltimore. Stover went five-for-five, including two field goals of 50 yards in Baltimore’s rout of the Philadelphia Eagles, 29-3.
Steve McNair completed six of eight passes for 73 yards and one score. In his first and only series, McNair led the team on a 12-play, 93-yard drive that took up over six minutes and culminated with a touchdown strike to tight end Quinn Sypniewski.
Drew Olson connected with rookie fullback Le’Ron McClain on a four-yard swing pass for the team’s only other touchdown. Olson completed seven of nine passes for 84 yards and the one score playing most of the fourth quarter.
Willis McGahee had only four carries, good for 20 yards with a long of 16. Second-year running back Corey Ross led the team in rushing with 65 yards on 11 carries and added nine yards on two receptions.
Rookie tight end Marcus Freeman—one of 15 different receivers to catch a pass—led the team in yards through the air with 41 on two receptions. Todd Heap had two key receptions, one getting the team out from beneath their own goal posts good for 10 yards and another for 22 yards setting the Ravens up at the Eagle 30 yard line.
The Baltimore defense reminded the NFL just how dominating it could be. They held the Eagles to converting just four of 14 third down attempts, 23 yards rushing and only 183 total net yards.
The defense combined to record five sacks for a net loss of 48 yards and was led by rookie linebacker Prescott Burgess with six total tackles and one sack. Dennis Haley was all over the field as well, chipping in five total tackles. Defensive back Ronnie Prude had four tackles, one sack, two pressures and two forced fumbles, recovering one.
Rookie Linebacker Antwan Barnes was constantly in the backfield, recording one sack and a tackle for a loss. Safety Gerome Sapp and defensive tackle Bill Swancutt finished out the Ravens sack parade.
Summary
The Ravens could not have scripted their opening drive much better. With 12 plays, converting three third downs—including one for nine yards—and finishing it off with six points with no injuries is as good as it gets.
Williams looked like a five-year veteran running his routes, pressing the defender deep and quickly coming back to the ball. Jared Gaither received the start at left tackle and though he came off his blocks too soon on occasion, there is no denying his otherwise stellar play.
Adam Terry was solid on the right side, a good first start for the two new tackles in both run and pass blocking. Chris Chester was manhandled at times when he was playing center with the second unit. He did hold up well when playing guard in pass protection, but failed to move his man off the ball when the team tried to run inside.
Jason Brown and Mike Flynn also held up well in pass protection, albeit for one long series. The line looked solid, but will need to prove, over the long haul of a game, that they can open holes inside on a more consistent basis.
Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason each had one reception with Clayton recording just five yards. Mason, working in the slot during the first series, lost his man on a deep crossing route, and was found by McNair for a key 22-yard reception.
This was a good first test for the overall offense, showing a mixture of passing and running, mostly being unpredictable, running from spread formations and throwing from their two tight end sets.
The reserve units, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired.
Kyle Boller came out and appeared nervous, falling back into his old tendencies to telegraph his throws. This led to two passes being batted down in his first two series and a high pass over the head of tight end Sypniewski down the right seam.
Boller did appear to settle down once in the two-minute offense, leading the offense downfield for a Matt Stover field goal. Even so, if he had put better arc on his pass to Clarence Moore at the goal line, it would have given Moore a real chance to make the catch rather than fight to prevent an interception.
Speaking of Moore, while he only recorded one reception (10 yards), the catch was made in heavy traffic and Moore had to dig the hard throw out of the dirt. His willingness to go up and fight for the ball and prevent an interception at the goal line, combine to be two things the receiver has lacked over the past two seasons.
The line of Steve Edwards and Marshal Yanda at tackles, Keydrick Vincent and Ben Grubbs at guards with Ikechuku Ndukwe at center rarely gave Troy Smith a chance to show that he could lead this team. Smith was often harassed, forced to flee the pocket or rush his throw to an open man.
Grubbs was bull rushed most of the night when trying to pass block, often giving up too much ground. When run blocking, he rarely moved his man off the line of scrimmage or opened many holes. Edwards simply got confused on occasion, blocking the wrong man, leading to pressures on the quarterback or tackles for a loss.
Vincent held his ground pretty well in both run and pass blocking. He opened a few holes for Gregg Pruitt Jr. and Corey Ross to exploit. While Yanda had a rather inconsistent night, he showed he can play the right tackle position. There were times when he stoned his man, crushed down the right side of the line for a big gain and properly rode his man around the quarterback. Still, it is early and the rookie will need work.
While Smith (three of 11, 34 yards) was harassed most of his time in the game, there is no denying that he looked too pumped up. Aside from two swing passes with good touch, most every other pass was rocketed to his intended receiver, making catches close to impossible.
There were occasions when he moved well in the pocket to find a clear passing lane, bought time and had open men. Yet he would rocket the ball, leading to high passes. His rookie counter part, Kevin Kolb, looked more like the former Heisman Trophy winner than Smith did and Kolb had purple bodies flying all around, from all angles. Smith did have a nice scramble up the middle to pick up a much needed first down, but he rarely showed composure.
Aside from his first attempt to pass, which ended up being a sack and fumble, Drew Olson looked calm, smooth relaxed and in control. Even though he was playing in the fourth quarter of the first preseason game, Olson completed seven of nine passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Those stats equate to a 142.6 passer rating that bested McNair’s 142.2 rating.
There were times when the pocket was collapsing, with the offense needing a big play to keep a drive alive. And in those times, Olson simply came through. More time is needed to sort out the third quarterback position, as with many other positional battles, but Olson outperformed Smith in this game.
McGahee and Mike Anderson are clearly the first two running backs on the roster. After that, Musa Smith, Ross and Pruitt Jr. are battling for the third running back position.
Ross and Pruitt easily outperformed Smith in this game and Ross’ ability to return kicks give him an edge. He is quicker than either Smith or Pruitt and this battle could be very interesting as the summer unfolds.
Defensively, Dwan Edwards made the most of the snaps he received, showing an explosion off the ball, and often getting into the backfield to redirect the running back.
Twice, Edwards recognized the screen, changed direction and ran down field to make the stop. He showed a good push off the edge and up the middle, something lacking from him over the last few years.
Atiyyah Ellison and Anthony Bryant also played extremely well. Both men showed good push up the middle and off the edge, collapsing pockets and helping their teammates create three fumbles (recovering two) and five sacks.
Ronnie Prude looks like a man possessed, or at least a young player who understands the complex schemes Rex Ryan employs. This was evident in the speed he displayed last night, flying all over the field, and being in the right place at the right time.
Derrick Martin and David Pittman also looked more relaxed which allowed their abilities to take over. While there were a number of passes completed, missed tackles and some big gains by the Eagles, the entire defense gave up only three points and 183 total net yards. When the defense needed to make a stop, they managed to create havoc in the backfield, record the sack, make a tackle for a loss, or force an errant throw.
There are still three more preseason games to go and more tape to review before the final roster can be set. Two things are certain before the team opens up the regular season. The coaching staff is going to have perhaps their most difficult time deciding which players will make up the 2007 Baltimore Ravens and some very good, NFL-caliber football players are going to be cut.

HISTORY
While the Titans carry an all-time preseason record of 5-0 against the Patriots into this week’s game, this is the first preseason matchup between the two teams since a 1988 matchup in Memphis. In regular season play, they have faced each other far more regularly and recently. In the 2006 finale, the Patriots delivered a 40-23 defeat of the Titans, ending Tennessee’s Wild Card playoff hopes. The Patriots lead the combined regular season and postseason series with a record of 21-16-1.

BULLOCK PLANNING PRESEASON PAYBACK? by Michael David Smith
Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck is still hopping mad, eight months later, about the Titans' Week 17 loss to the Patriots.
In that game, New England put in quarterback Vinny Testaverde and had him throw a touchdown pass with 1:45 remaining and the Patriots comfortably ahead. Afterward, Patriots receiver Reche Caldwell celebrated on the field.
As the Titans prepare to play the Patriots Friday night, Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that Bulluck sounds like a man who'd like some payback.
"Just the way they were acting after the game kind of irked me," Bulluck said. "A couple of the guys on the team weren't being too professional. It is only a preseason game, but 87 [Reche Caldwell] needs to keep his head on a swivel, that's all I've got to say."
Bulluck then proceeded to show that he actually had more to say: "He is probably the sixth receiver, so I don't even know if he'll be in when I'm in. If he is, I'll know, trust me."
Of course, if you're really planning to lay a guy out on the field, the worst possible thing to do is inform him of your plans ahead of time. And even if Bulluck is the type of guy who would deliver a cheap shot in a preseason game because he's mad about something that happened the year before, he can't possibly be stupid enough to announce that publicly. More than an indication that Bulluck will go after Caldwell Friday, this is a demonstration of the way NFL players use perceived slights to motivate themselves.

Hehe.
To answer your question, I think a bigger deal is made of them than need be. Sure, if they're taunting the opposing team after the score, or acting vular, by all means, throw that yellow hankie for unsportsmanlike conduct.
But more often than not it seems players get the flag for having a good time.
"Smiling, number 84 offense. 15 yard penalty." "Having fun, number 32 on the defense. 1000 yard penalty..." :whatever:

Richmond, Va. — Facing the possibility of a new indictment, which includes racketeering charges, Falcons quarterback Michael Vick will most likely join his three co-defendants and agree this week to a plea deal with prosecutors in his federal dogfighting case, according to two people with knowledge of the case. Vick has not made a final decision, according to the two people with the knowledge of the case, because he wants to hear from the NFL what a guilty plea would do to his football career. "It is a very good chance he will plead guilty," said one of the people who spoke on condition of anonymity. "He definitely wants to play football again. His love is for football. And he would love to play for the Falcons again. But first and foremost is to get back on the field." Baltimore ain't doing sqat this year... people seem to forget how dominant San Diego's defense was against the Pats up until their meltdown... and people also right off Denver b/c of their weak front 7... those teams have to be put in their right behind the Colts and Pats as well... the AFC is just too deep for the Ravens to really contend.
Oh, I agree. Here is my AFC prediction. Divison Winners are New England, San Diego, Cincy, and Indy. Wild Cards are Dender and Pittsburgh.
NFC Div. winners are Dallas, St. Louis, Chicago, and New Orleans. Wild Cards are San Fran. and a bit of a surprise in Detroit.

I don't know about that. At best they are a Wild Card team. I think Cincy wins that divison.
13-3 last year....and they add McGahee....they came pretty damn close to beating the Colts in the Playoffs. Cincy does nothing for me. There offense is sick, (when Henry returns) but there defense has to many holes.
KALEL114

I think Cincy's schedule is a lot softer then Baltimore. Baltimore has @San Diego, New England (in Baltimore), and Indy (in Balt.) Back to back to back. That is in a crucial part of the season, games 11-13. I like Mcgahee in Balt. I think he will get monster numbers, but remember that they are moving away from using a fullback, so he will get punished alot with no lead blocker. Cincy will be just fine without Chris Henry because they have a great chance of being 7-1 or 6-2 by time he gets back. It will be interesting to say the least.

PACMAN TO RELEASE HIP-HOP SINGLE by Michael David Smith
Showing yet again that he just doesn't get it and never will, suspended Titans cornerback Pacman Jones says he will release a hip-hop single about "stones, big money and cars."
Jones provides the financing for a record label called National Street League Records (MySpace page here), and that label announced that he will team with a producer named Spoaty in a duo called "Posterboyz" with their first single "Let it Shine," which will be released Aug. 27. An album is due to be released in 2008, according to a news release.
"Looking from the outside in, I have been the example for many to see the poster child if you will; and from that sentiment the 'Posterboyz' group name was born," Jones said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
When NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Jones for the 2007 season, the commish said he would leave open the possibility of reinstating Jones after the Titans' 10th game, if Jones conducted himself in a way that reflected well on himself and the league. Instead, Jones has been giving interviews in which he comes across like an idiot, engaging in lame pro wrestling stunts, and talking about how he didn't really mean it when he said he would go back to school to get his college degree.
Pacman had better write all his songs about "big money" now. He won't have big money much longer.

Ravens offense Catching up With the Defense
Ray Lewis realized what he did.
For the first time in his Hall of Fame career, he answered an open-ended question about the expectations for the 2007 Ravens by gushing about Baltimore's potentially explosive offense.
Yes, you read that correctly. Baltimore and explosive offense made the same sentence.
Lewis smiled ear to ear when I told him what he did.
The linebacker acknowledged, "Usually the fight in training camp isn't fair. We are dominant in practice against the offense. This year, it is totally different. You saw it."
Lewis was correct.
A morning practice on a hot football Friday revealed an offensive attack that has the ability to pour on the points.
Conversations after practice revealed that everyone associated with the organization — to a man — believes it will happen and that balance will equal a trip to the Super Bowl, as players and staff freely talked about.
When breaking it down, the first person everyone talks about is Steve McNair.
As you watch him in practice, he is finally working the Ravens' offense flawlessly without overthinking.
"I really wasn't comfortable in this offense until week 8," McNair said. "It was such a crash course. We had to keep it simple last year after I arrived so close to summer camp."
Plus, as head coach Brian Billick said, "Steve had to take almost every snap in camp last year to expedite the learning curve. That wasn't really fair."
McNair now fully understands what Billick and Rick Neuheisel are looking for. And with a total comprehension of the playbook, McNair hummed fastballs with ease into the paws of various targets.
The quarterback had the reputation in Tennessee of being an incredible team leader. Lewis and other defensive players notice a difference in McNair now that he is at ease in Baltimore.
Lewis says he and Ed Reed finally have their equal on offense, a sentiment McNair echoes.
Ravens receiver Derrick Mason, McNair's teammate in Tennessee, said his partner in crime is running camp like he did with the Titans. The quarterback said he is 100 percent physically, and thinks he can play at the clip he is accustomed to for another two or three years.
In addition to McNair truly being at home, the other big development is the arrival of Willis McGahee. General Manager Ozzie Newsome explains that he opted to switch the style of the Ravens' backfield — shifting from Jamal Lewis to McGahee — when he lost fullback Ovie Mughelli in free agency to an absurdly rich deal from the Falcons.
While talking to McGahee after the workout, you could almost see the proverbial chip on his shoulder it is so big. McGahee said he was both humbled and angered by what happened in Buffalo and he plans on "showing the world I am still an elite back."
He changed his uniform number to 23 and was tickled to get a freshly minted deal from Newsome and the Ravens upon the trade. But McGahee also confesses he is a tad overwhelmed by the new offense and says he will need a few preseason games to be totally in the flow. Look for McGahee to have a big year as a runner and receiver out of the backfield.
Bar none, the biggest buzz on offense is over the play of second-year receiver Demetrius Williams (draft him on your fantasy team late and then thank me later). Williams has freakish athleticism and fly-paper hands.
"The kid keeps working," McNair said. "I told Demetrius that he can be as good as any receiver in this league. We have a great rapport. I trust him deep and that opens things up for everyone else. He can fly down field."
Williams made two great catches during the practice we attended.
Mark Clayton, Baltimore's 2005 first-rounder, is also having a very strong camp. Clayton developed a strong rapport with McNair last year.
Mason, who at times last year was frustrated with his role, is having a good camp and will remain a go-to weapon on third down for McNair because of their relationship dating back to their days as Titans.
All-Pro tight end Todd Heap revealed this is the healthiest he has been in his entire career. Heap could hardly contain himself when pressed on the Ravens' attack.
"It is clearly the most talented group I have ever been around," he said. "It all starts with Steve. It isn't conversation. He is so much more acclimated and it makes a difference."
As far as Heap's personal goals, he thinks double-digit touchdown catches can be in the cards.
"I see Demetrius and Mark flying around and I know how that is going to open the middle for me. You have to respect our passing attack for the first time in, well, forever. Then you sprinkle in Willis. You genuinely have multiple weapons to account for."
You can punch Heap's ticket to the Pro Bowl this year.
Hall of Famer to-be Jon Ogden is on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but Ravens fans should not be alarmed. "If tomorrow was the Cincinnati game, JO would be out there," Billick said. "We need to keep him fresh for the season. That's our top priority. JO is a pro and he'll be ready."
In the meantime, his spot at left tackle is being manned by supplemental pick Jared Geathers. Players and management cannot stop raving about his play, not that they need to. I saw Geathers, who has been a Raven for about three weeks, dominate Terrell Suggs. The staff and players tell me this has been a regular happening.
Eric DeCosta, Baltimore's brilliant director of college scouting, gets the credit for this coup. DeCosta cites Newsome's strong relationship with Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen as the main reason why the Ravens plucked the massive tackle.
Think about it — the Ravens could have the heir apparent to Ogden for the cost of a fifth-round pick in 2008.
DeCosta and the Ravens used their first-round pick on can't-miss guard Ben Grubbs. While he's been a bit nicked-up in camp, Grubbs says he has learned a lot from Ogden about how to be a professional. Look for the former Auburn road grader to grab a starting spot sooner than later.
Newsome, DeCosta and pro personnel director George Kokinis have built an offense and now have a team that is a legit Super Bowl favorite.
Lewis made a point to show off his T-shirt, the front of which asks, "What's better than No. 1?"
The answer?
"Togetherness."
Finally, they have it in Baltimore with a potentially prolific offense to compliment a bone-crushing defense.
And it means the Ravens are one of the true teams to beat for the Super Bowl.
That's not early August hyperbole.
The Ravens expect to be in Arizona for the big game. Just ask them.

I think I have to disagree. Remember, the Houston O-line is always the worst in the league. Just ask David Carr, if he can remember. Barber has more upside, because gets alot of goaline and third down carries. He is quicker and can break "a big one" better than Jones. He will eventually get the bulk of carries. Jones may be let go after this season. Honestly he is the better back than Jones, which sucks because Dallas passed on Steven Jackson for Jones in the draft. Ahman Green is also not that young any more and durability is a big question. My five cents.
Kaleb
08-15-2007, 07:39 PM
Julius Jones has been getting more carries inside the red zone and catching more passes on third downs during Cowboys training camp.
Those duties were Marion Barber's under Bill Parcells. While no one is likely to dominate carries in Dallas' backfield, Jones should wind up with more touches than Barber. If Jones starts swiping some third-down/goal-line duties, he's seriously undervalued in fantasy leagues.

but you never take a Runningback in a rbbc system (jones and barber) . Green wont have that problem and will get the ball 25+ times a game unlike Jones and Barber who will get the ball 15times each.

He will shoot him self in the foot. He still runs with his down and he has poor "vission". Training camp is one thing, on the field is different. There are alot of doubts in Jones down here. And there was alot of talk about trading him this year. I still believe that there are three teams you totally stay away from in FF drafts this year. Houston, Atlanta, and Oakland. There is no way you should draft anyone on those teams. So I believe Ahman Green is a waste of a pick and Marion is a better start. Again, that's just my opinion.

It is impossible not to take a RB that is RBBC. More and more teams are going in that direction. Sure, he will get the rock 25+, but with a poor o-line how many yards will he actually get? If he averages 2 yards a carry this year, I will be totally surprised.

Rookie tight end Marcus Freeman—one of 15 different receivers to catch a pass—
The Baltimore defense reminded the NFL just how dominating it could be.
Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason each had one reception with Clayton recording just five yards. Mason, working in the slot during the first series, lost his man on a deep crossing route, and was found by McNair for a key 22-yard reception.

If Ocho Stinko would put in half of the energy into improving his game as he does trying to figure out what end zone antics he's gonna pull, he'd be more consistent.
He didn't catch one ball on that Monday night against the Colts last year. He spent all the pre-game putting on specially designed shoes with photos on them, knowing full the commissioners were gonna tell him to remove them. :whatever: Go figger.....and ABC/ESPN followed him around to the bank so he could write a check to the NFL for the fine he was planning on getting. Considering Dungy's offense couldn't score in the postseason, I'd say putting up 31 on San Fransisco, 20 in Philadelphia (after not being able to score a TD in their last two wild card meetings) and then 27 in the Super Bowl seems like improvement.
Of course Tampa's D was the main reason they got there, but the offense improved enough to even give the D that chance. And what's amazing to me is that people think Gruden ruined this team's consistency, as if are cap problems weren't going to eventually come into play and as if Lynch, Sapp, Brooks, and Rice weren't going to get any older if Dungy was still here.

Yeah, the Cap played a big role in the decline. Rich McKay, for all the good he did, really loved giving players contracts with the bulk of the money all on the last couple years of the deal. Allen I think has done a decent job of cleaning up McKay's mess. I say decent as the signings of Stussie and Garner kept him from great job status. :o
Another thing I hate is when people say "Gruden didn't win that Super Bowl, that was Dungy's team." Besides the fact that even vets like Sapp said Gruden's intensity was the fire that drove them, over half the roster was not on the team in 2001. If anything it was more Gruden's team then Dungy's. :o
I still do like Gruden. Giants game aside, I do think he's a good play caller, and now that he finally has a vet QB and an O-line that has played together for more than a year I think he'll start to regain his form.
Especially when he's in a make or break year and you've got names like Schottenheimer, Cowher, and Mariucci out there.

From CNN
RICHMOND, Virginia (Aug. 17) - Two co-defendants of Michael Vick say the NFL star helped execute dogs that didn't fight well, according to federal court documents
The court papers, filed as Quanis Phillips, 28, and Purnell Peace, 35, pleaded guilty to dogfighting charges Friday, said all three men "executed approximately eight dogs that did not perform well in testing sessions" in April of this year.
Peace, of Virginia Beach, and Phillips, of Atlanta, said the money behind the Bad Newz Kennels dogfighting operation, based on property Vick owns in Virginia, came "almost exclusively" from the Atlanta Falcons star.

You know, perhaps I'm out of line here on this Vick situation. But seriously for him to have that much money, couldn't he have found a better hobby? Out of all the hobbies he could do with the money he has, he decides to choose dog fighting?
I swear, some of these professional athletes need to just give up their paycheck and give it to someone who would do better with it.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Two of Michael Vick's alleged cohorts in a grisly dogfighting case pleaded guilty Friday, and one said the Atlanta Falcons quarterback joined them in drowning and hanging dogs that underperformed.
With his NFL career in jeopardy and a superseding indictment in the works to add more charges, Vick and his lawyers have been talking with federal prosecutors about a possible plea agreement.
Now that all three co-defendants have entered plea bargains, Vick is on his own to cut a deal or face trial on federal charges.
The court docket did not list any appearance for Vick. One of his lawyers, Lawrence Woodward, attended Friday's hearings and declined to answer questions as he left the courthouse.
Purnell Peace, 35, of Virginia Beach and Quanis Phillips, 28, of Atlanta entered plea agreements and joined defendant Tony Taylor of Hampton, who struck a similar deal last month. The agreements require the three to cooperate in the government's case against Vick.
Sentencing is scheduled for Peace and Phillips on Nov. 30 and Taylor on Dec. 14. Vick has been barred from training camp by the NFL and is to go on trial Nov. 26.
A statement signed by Phillips as part of his plea agreement said Vick participated in the execution of about eight dogs, some by drowning and hanging.
"Phillips agrees and stipulates that these dogs all died as a result of the collective efforts of Peace, Phillips and Vick," the statement said.
Phillips and Peace also backed Taylor's assertion that Vick was involved in gambling.
"The 'Bad Newz Kennels' operation and gambling monies were almost exclusively funded by Vick," statements by the two men say.
Peace and Phillips were charged with conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiring to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.
"Did you conspire with these folks to sponsor a dogfighting venture?" U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson asked Peace.
He replied, "Yes, sir."
The offenses are punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, but the exact sentence will be based largely on federal sentencing guidelines. Hudson told Peace and Phillips that certain elements of their offenses will increase their sentencing ranges.
AP - Aug 17, 12:07 pm EDT

"There are aggravating circumstances in this case, there's no doubt about it," he told Phillips.
While Peace was freed, Hudson found that Phillips violated terms of his release by failing a drug test and ordered him jailed. Phillips also is on probation for a drug conviction in Atlanta, and the guilty plea could mean more jail time in that case, Hudson said.
Any outcome that ties Vick to betting on the dogfights could trigger a lifetime ban from the NFL under the league's personal conduct policy.
The 27-year-old quarterback was linked to betting by a statement signed by Taylor, who pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with the government, and the July 17 indictment.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell withheld further action while the NFL conducts its own investigation. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league had no comment on the latest pleas.
About 30 animal-rights activists gathered outside the courtroom. Afterward, as police officers cleared the scene, protesters continued waving large pictures of a mutilated dog.
"This is one dogfighting ring that's been annihilated," said John Goodwin, a spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States.
The four defendants all initially pleaded not guilty, and Vick issued a statement saying he looked forward to clearing his name.
A statement of facts signed by Taylor as part of his plea agreement placed Vick at the scene of several dogfights and linked him to betting. Taylor said Vick financed virtually all the "Bad Newz Kennels" operation on Vick's property in Surry County.
The case began with a search in April that turned up dozens of pit bulls and an assortment of dogfighting paraphernalia at the property, a few miles from Vick's hometown of Newport News. According to the indictment, dogs that lost fights or fared poorly in test fights were sometimes executed by hanging, electrocution or other means.
Associated Press Writer Dionne Walker contributed to this report.

Vick and the rest of them are sick individuals....The Real Sports doc I saw showcased how this one grounp of Dog Fighters kidnapped a dog from a guy in a local suberb, then proceded to break the dogs hip so it could run away and allow the pit bull to attack it. This was done to train the pit where to attack. Amazingly the dog survived...honestly one of the saddest things I ever saw.

I agree that Vick should be punished for probably the maximum amount of prison time that is possible since he was the one behind this, but I also agree in theory with The Game. Sometimes the line gets blurred with this animal cruelty stuff. An example is when people start saying that its one of the saddest things they ever saw, its not. There are millions upon millions of other people going through worse times for no good reason that are infinitively worse than this. So lets not get out of hand with this. Its a cruel and disgusting act, yes. Yes Vick deserved prison time, the most possible. Saddest thing I ever saw? No, far from it.

The difference between what Vick did and rape and murder is that the latter two atleast in the circumstances of Kobe and Ray Lweis (neither of whom were convicted of either charge) were situations of a spontaneous crimes.
The big deal with Vick, isnt that people like dogs more than humans (although I know a lot do) it's the premeditation, the planning, and the organization that goes into something like that. Not to mention the overly inhuman ways the animals were treated both in and out of the dog-fighting ring. As a general rule, people (atleast those with some form of a soul) dont like to see animals get hurt. There's an innocence component to them, especially dogs, that we dont see in ourselves. Look at the whole "Barbaro" situation from last year as a prime example. If some olympic sprinter had a heart attack out on the race track, there wouldnt have been that kind of outpouring towards him.
Jerry!
08-17-2007, 02:29 PM
Yeah I remember watching the HBO special on Barbaro. The entire time it was on I couldn't help but keep thinking "Its a ****ing horse! Dozens of horses are put down for the same exact reason as Barbaro." The dog cruelty thing I can understand to a certain degree, Barbaro I was completely lost on.
Dark Donnie
08-17-2007, 02:34 PM
Barbaro was sad, but not as bad as the Dog cruelty thing because it was an accident, not something done to him.
I think many people were affected by it because he was a cinderella story, plus the way it happen was in kind of a violent fashion(the fall).

I know it's just the preseason, but the Titans DID lay some nice licks on Brady (although Young got his too).
Man he got Rocked one good time-was slow to get up and everything. I don't want to see anybody get hurt...even an evil 'Pat'.
Anybody notice they've been playin harder in the pre-season over the last few seasons?

Ray Lewis didnt kill anyone . That is why he has been able to rehabilitate his image, I mean it was 1 momentary lapse of judgement vs yrs of Animal abuse.

I never heard of Ray Lewis getting into any serious problems since or before for that matter. Vick has been doing this for at least 5 years.

Bucs got their asses handed to them tonight (31-19), and just getting a clean QB/center exchanged seem arduous all night (), but Garcia was 6/6 with a TD, and it was a beauty.

I thought the starters played well, minus a few mishaps, but our backups sucked ass tonight.
There were a few reserves who played well though, such as Tanard Jackson, Quincy Black, Luke McCown, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham.

The Titans upset the Pats 27-24 with the Pats unable to convert for a first down and to even get close to field goal range.:woot: The Pats had four turnovers including a int by Brady that was returned all the by Titans cb Finnegan. Bullock followed on his comments that the Titans would pay back the Pats after they went over the line in the postgame celebration of last years game.
The Pats payed in the pre-season. Stop the presses. Let me try to figure this out, the Patriots beat up on the Titans in during the SEASON and Bullock returned the favor in the PRESEASON. Got it.

VICK ADMITS GUILT
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Michael Vick has accepted a plea deal on federal conspiracy charges. But it's more than just a guilty plea. Vick is admitting that he did it. A statement from lawyer Billy Martin reads as follows:
"After consulting with his family over the weekend, Michael Vick ask that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with Federal prosecutors regarding the charges pending against him. Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of Guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologizes again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter. The legal team and Mr. Vick will appear in court in Richmond on August 27th."
It's a far cry from Martin's initial statements regarding the case from July 23, when Martin had this to say: "You all heard and saw that this was the first step from Michael in proving his innocence. The indictment contains mere allegations."
In our view, Vick came clean because he realizes that there's no way he can ever return to the NFL without securing redemption, and that there can be no redemption without contrition.
The broader question is whether redemption is even available with contrition. Should he get credit for telling the truth only after it was clear that there was no way out? We don't think so.
It's unclear whether the deal includes any type of commitment from the NFL as to Vick's possible suspension, or any commitment from authorities in Virginia regarding possible charges for animal cruelty arising from eight dogs that were killed on Vick's property in April 2007, the same month in which Vick told the Commissioner that there was no dog fighting on his Surry County, Virginia property. If Vick's formal plea documents include an admission that he participated in the killings of the dogs, he's certain to face even more jail time in Virginia, where the total penalty will be up to 40 years.
The plea will be entered on August 27, at 10:30 a.m. EDT.

Looks like he'll be done. Plus, I heard that if he didn't plead now, more charges, supposedly including gambling/racketeering would have been brought out. If that had happen, he definitely would have been finished.
