I really hope the reason they're keeping him around is for a possible trade they have in the works. Otherwise that's a roster spot that could be spent on a player for a position we actually need.
As for McCown and Grads, they looked good in the preseason, but I still say we're a Garcia injury away from another 4 win season. :(
I pray to John McKay every night that he can stay healthy. :o

Dominant Second Half Gives Colts Opening Night Victory over Saints
INDIANAPOLIS – First, they unveiled the banner.
Then, they did it proud.
The Colts, as last season’s Super Bowl champions, hosted the opening game of the NFL’s Kickoff Weekend 2007 on Thursday. It was a day of hype and celebration, a memorable, nationally-televised day on which the 2006 World Champions banner was unveiled. But mostly for the Colts, it was about opening this season, which they did before 57,361 fans at the RCA Dome.
They did it successfully.
They did it with a touch of early drama.
And after a tight first half, they did it in dominant fashion.
Colts 41, New Orleans Saints 10.
“There was a lot of emotion in the city the last couple of days and today just even coming over to the stadium you could feel it with our fans,” Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said after the Colts out-gained New Orleans 452-293 in a meeting of division winners from last season.
“The game was just a great way to cap all that off.”
The Colts capped it off with scores on their first four second-half possessions, and safety Matt Giordano finished off a dominant defensive effort with an 83-yard interception return for a touchdown in the game’s final minute.
“It sure was a good start,” said Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who completed 18 of 30 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions for a passer rating of 125.4.
“That is all it is – a start.”
The Colts, after squandering a 7-0 halftime lead, turned a 10-10 halftime tie into a 34-10 lead by scoring on their first four possessions of the second half and by continuing what was throughout the game a stifling defensive performance.
“Tonight,” Colts safety Bob Sanders said, “we just had a good time.”
The Saints, the NFL’s top-ranked offense a year ago, did not score an offensive touchdown. Their lone touchdown came on a 55-yard fumble return by cornerback Jason David, who signed with the Saints as a free agent in the off-season after three seasons as a Colts starting cornerback.
The Colts, who finished 32nd in the NFL in run defense a year ago and lost four defensive starters in the off-season, allowed 106 rushing yards.
“I think the defense really felt challenged,” Manning said. “There is no question that all offseason, that is all everybody talked about – and this is just one game now. It takes 16 games.
“They did feel challenged coming into the game of, ‘Hey, the defense has lost all these guys.’ The only cliché is when you lose some great players everybody else has to step up. We had a lot of young guys that stepped up and played good tonight.”
The victory was the Colts’ third in succession in a season opener. Their last season-opening loss came in 2004, in the opening game of Kickoff Weekend at New England.
The Colts started the last two seasons 13-0 and 9-0 respectively, and are 15-2 since 2002 in September under Dungy.
The Colts, with a late, game-tying field goal, had a touch of momentum at halftime.
By the end of the third quarter, the touch had become a torrent.
First, running back Joseph Addai capped a 71-yard, eight-play drive with a 2-yard run to give the Colts a 17-10 lead with 9:45 remaining in the third quarter.
After a defense that shut down the Saints repeatedly during the first three quarters did so again, Manning threw his second touchdown pass of the game. This one was a 28-yard play-action pass to wide receiver Reggie Wayne for a 24-10 Colts lead. The Colts’ defense forced the game’s first turnover late in the quarter, with outside linebacker Freddy Keiaho – making his first NFL start – making his first career interception.
Kicker Adam Vinatieri turned that into a 27-10 lead with a 33-yard field goal 48 seconds into the fourth quarter.
“It was two teams kind of battling it out at the beginning,” Colts center Jeff Saturday said. “Then, the momentum kind of fell our way. The defense started getting turnovers, and stopping them and giving us the ball on a short field. Any time our defense is holding them like our defense was tonight, it makes it easy to at least convert and get some type of points.”
Wayne’s second touchdown of the game – a 48-yard, play-action deep pass from Manning – came early in the fourth quarter and gave Indianapolis a 34-10 lead.
The Colts’ offense in the second half at the time looked like this:
Four possessions.
Twenty-two plays.
Two-hundred thirty seven total yards.
Three touchdowns.
One field goal.
Twenty-four points.
“Execution was better,” Manning said. “It was a great start in the second half coming out and getting that first touchdown. Of course, our defense played great all night. The offense actually gave the Saints their only touchdown.
“If the defense can do that all year, it sure will help our offense be more efficient.”
The Colts took a 7-0 lead early in the first half, fell behind, 10-7, then tied the game just before halftime with a 33-yard field goal by Vinatieri.
That came with 45 seconds remaining in the half, and capped a second quarter in which New Orleans outscored the Colts, 10-3.
First, David stripped Wayne of the ball after a short pass, forcing a fumble that David picked up and returned 55 yards for a touchdown that tied the game, 7-7.
Olindo Mare, acquired by the Saints in an off-season trade with Miami, then gave New Orleans a 10-7 lead with a 34-yard field goal with 6:26 remaining in the quarter.
After an exchange of possessions, the Colts drove 70 yards in eight plays, setting up Vinatieri’s game-tying field goal.
“We were a little bit out of sync, just a little bit off in the first half, offensively,” Dungy said. “They played us a little bit differently than I thought they would.”
Of the second half, Dungy said, “That’s the funny thing about it. Not a real dramatic difference. We converted our third downs and we hung onto the ball.”
After not picking up a first down on the game’s first series, the Colts used eight plays to drive 58 yards on their second, with Manning capping the drive with a 27-yard, play-action touchdown pass to Harrison.
Harrison on the play beat David, who signed with New Orleans in the off-season as a restricted free agent from the Colts. Harrison caught the ball in the back of the end zone, getting his feet in bounds before rolling out of bounds. Wayne beat David for touchdowns twice in the second half.
The first-quarter touchdown was Manning/Harrison’s 107th, extending their NFL record for touchdowns by a passer/receiver tandem.
Addai finished with 118 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, and Wayne caught a team-high seven passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
The Colts will visit AFC South rival Tennessee in Nashville, Tenn., a week from Sunday.
“That was exciting,” said Giordano, who intercepted Brees in the final minute and weaved his way to his first NFL touchdown. “The whole defense did a great job. Everyone played exceptionally well. You just have to tip your hat to everyone on the defense. “We have to continue to get better now and great ready for next week.”

Well all the ESPN guys wear Brady contact lenses. After last night, I gotta wonder where they are now.:yay:
Tsk. Saints got cocky after their good first half. That being said, this could very well be a preview of the Super Bowl. I doubt the Colts can handle New England now that Brady actually has recievers to throw to...but it could very well happen. Both Indianapolis and New Orleans have the teams to go all the way.

Quit being as ass celldog. The only real way to compare Brady and Manning outside of putting them on the same exact team and playing them the same exact amount of time is by the number of rings they have. Brady is a more proven quarterback than Manning and his three friends prove it. Manning has always been on a consistently better team (Better recievers, better line), yet he has only been able to win one where as Brady, who has been on a worse team has three.
And I am saying this as a Steelers fan. So save your biased "Brady Lenses" (what does that even mean?) rant for someone else Celldog.

But who spit in your coffee this morning? Cranky aren't we? Lighten up and leave your hatred on the Christian thread. This is sports. We have fun over here just ribbin' each other.
Fact: In their last 3 matches (2 in Foxboro) the Colts have beat the Pats. And even then the take was how "brilliant" Belicheck was or how Brady can make "any" receivers look good! Now it's poor Tom just didn't have anybody to throw to. You can't have it both ways. It's good that Brady got his rings. That is truly ancient history now.
Well, unfortunately you are as much of a hard headed fanboy as you are hard headed idealogue in the political threads. You try to generalize anyone who disagrees with you, if not into a liberal nut job than a person wearing "Brady Lenses." Thus making it hard to "have fun" with you.

Making a dynasty means fighting human nature
Bob Kravitz
Now it's about establishing a legacy, carving out a niche in football history. Now it's about getting greedy, joining the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos as salary cap-era teams that were able to sustain greatness over the long term.
http://www.indystar.com/graphics/clear.gifhttp://www.indystar.com/graphics/clear.gif
One Super Bowl victory?
Yeah, that was great. Enjoyed the party. Showed off that giant diamond-and-sapphire ring. Had a civic hangover that lasted months.
But now it's over.
And it's time for the Indianapolis Colts, the most consistently successful NFL franchise this side of you-know-who, to move beyond that solitary Super Bowl victory and establish something even greater.
They can be the Atlanta Braves, a dominant team that managed just a single World Series title despite a decade-long run of dominance.
Or they can be one of those forever teams, one that people outside of Indianapolis remember always.
"When you looked at (the Pittsburgh Steelers' dynasty), you had guys with so much pride, who wanted to be the best in the league at their position,'' Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "And that's what I see with our guys. Marvin Harrison wanted to be the best receiver when I came here in 2002, and he still does in 2007.
"With the Steelers, when they had won it (the Super Bowl) four times, they wanted to do it five. That's what it takes. And that kind of drive is hard to maintain. It runs counter to human nature. When people prove something, they don't necessarily feel like they have to prove it again. But I think we have people who have so much pride, for them, one isn't enough."
Said Peyton Manning: "I think this has increased my respect for the (1998 and '99) Broncos and the New England teams who've won multiple Super Bowls. I know how hard it is not to win one."
For so many years, the Colts climbed the mountain. Then came the playoffs. Then came the disappointments. So close to the summit, so long and hard a fall.
There is, however, a gritty nobility about this franchise, and has been for many years now. They never let the previous season's ultimate heartbreak affect the new season. They got rolled by New England, then started 13-0 the next season. They got punked by Pittsburgh -- search-and-rescue teams still haven't found that Mike Vanderjagt kick -- and came back 9-0 the next season.
A good kind of amnesia.
"You've never seen any hangover from us after a loss the previous season," Manning said. "That's one thing we've always done well, is put last year behind."
It's one thing, though, to put a searing playoff loss in the rearview mirror.
It's another to consign a Super Bowl victory to the mental dustbin.
We're dealing with human nature, which will be a tougher competitor than San Diego, New England or an improved AFC South. A loser comes back with a renewed sense of passion and mission. A winner comes back and thinks, "Hey, we've been there and done that."
Are the Colts different from so many other Super Bowl champions who struggled the next season?
I'm sure after Tampa Bay won its championship, everybody was promising there would be no Super Bowl hangover. Same thing with the Steelers two years ago. Hangover? Please. Won't happen. Except it did.
You like to think that with Dungy's steady hand, Manning's unquenchable thirst for perfection and Harrison's remarkable work ethic, there's no way complacency creeps in.
We get a good idea tonight at the RCA Dome. New Orleans is one of the top three teams in the NFC -- which would make them one of the top seven teams in the AFC. Drew Brees tore up the Colts when he was in San Diego -- goodbye, perfect season -- and tonight he comes back with an even better offensive line and more weaponry at the skill positions.
It will be interesting to see how the new-and-possibly-improved Indianapolis defense performs. The two new corners, Kelvin Hayden and Marlin Jackson, are a nice upgrade. The middle of that defensive line, though, remains a mystery. Ed Johnson? He was the surprise of the preseason, a little bit like Antoine Bethea one year earlier. But can he anchor an already diminished defensive line that is playing without Anthony "Booger" McFarland?
The bigger test, though, may come from within. Before the game, the Colts will unfurl the championship banner. For months, they've been saying, "Leave last year behind." Then, just minutes before the new season, they will confront, and celebrate, last year.
"I just wish we didn't have a game that day," Dungy said, smiling.
Some of us aren't picking the Colts to repeat, but, then, looking at the mathematics of it, that hardly rates as stepping out on a limb. The Chargers are going to be terrific. The Patriots have run into some early-season obstacles -- does Rodney Harrison have to return his Ed Block Courage Award now? -- but you know they'll get their 10 to 12 wins and be there.
It's a matter of definition.
The Colts already have defined themselves as an extraordinarily consistent franchise that finally won a Super Bowl. They are, however, capable of so much more.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Down by a field goal halfway through the second quarter Thursday night, and with the offense noticeably struggling and out of sync, the Indianapolis Colts (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=ind) defense took the field, knowing it desperately needed a stop against a New Orleans Saints (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nor) attack that statistically ranked No. 1 in the NFL in 2006.
And earning a stop was just what the once-maligned Colts defense did, forcing a three-and-out and a punt.
End of series and, essentially, the end of the game.
The Colts offense caught fire and scored on its ensuing five possessions, and suddenly a 10-7 deficit was a 34-10 runaway.
In a blowout in which the final score was 41-10, it's hard to identify a turning point, a precise snapshot when momentum inexorably charged in one franchise's direction. But for Colts coach Tony Dungy, there was no mystery about when Big Mo' moved to his sideline and established squatter's rights there.
"That was big," Dungy said of the second-quarter series in which his defense stoned the Saints. "If they take it down and score and go up 17-7, it's a completely different game. But the defense went out and made a stop and gave our offense a chance to get going."
That series certainly set the tone for an Indianapolis defense that featured four new starters and a rookie nickel cornerback. During the stretch in which the Colts offense scored on five straight series, with Peyton Manning (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4256) torching New Orleans cornerback and onetime Indianapolis teammate Jason David (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6884) time and again, the defense held the explosive Saints to 24 snaps, 58 net yards and four first downs.
http://assets.espn.go.com/i/story/design07/dropQuote.gif I thought we played at warp speed. It was like a race to see who could get to the football first. http://assets.espn.go.com/i/story/design07/dropQuoteEnd.gif
--Marlin Jackson, Indianapolis cornerback
On four of its offensive series in the stretch, New Orleans got no first downs. On another possession, the Saints had just one first down.
In a game that was supposed to be an old-fashioned offensive shootout, it was the Colts defense that played with the speed of a bullet. Last year, during the dismal period when Indianapolis could not stop the run, Dungy and defensive coordinator Ron Meeks kept emphasizing that the unit needed to play fast.
On Thursday, with an infusion of youth, the Colts could not have played much faster.
"I thought we played at warp speed," said third-year defensive back Marlin Jackson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7205), who made his 10th career start but just his second at cornerback. "It was like a race to see who could get to the football first."
There was considerable offseason consternation among the fans here about the defections the defense suffered in free agency and the loss of tackle Anthony McFarland (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4663) to a training camp knee injury. In truth, though, Colts personnel officials and coaches privately felt the defense was much faster with its younger players than it was in 2006.
http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2007/0906/nfl_g_giordano_195.jpg Tom Strattman/AP Photo
Matt Giordano capped the Colts' blowout victory with an 82-yard interception return for a score.
Jackson and Kelvin Hayden (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7236), the other new starting cornerback, are bigger than the veterans they replaced, more physical and quicker to stop the run. Weakside linebacker Freddie Keiaho (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7843), who had six tackles, an interception and a pass deflected in his first career start, is a better athlete than the departed Cato June (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6534). Rookie free-agent tackle Ed Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8527) isn't as strong an interior anchor as McFarland, but he held up well Thursday night, and one has to wonder how he went undrafted.
And perhaps most importantly, free safety Bob Sanders (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6803) -- arguably the NFL's best pound-for-pound defender, but a guy who has as many missed games as appearances (24) during his first three seasons -- is healthy again. And the Colts are a much different defense when the hard-hitting Sanders is on the field, as he was during the team's playoff run to the Super Bowl XLI title in 2006.
"He makes us better, no doubt about it, but I just think getting off to a fast start is always a key for us," Meeks said. "And we got off fast tonight. We had guys flying to the ball. We just didn't give up many big plays."
In fact, the Colts held the New Orleans offense to just a field goal. The Saints' lone touchdown came, ironically enough, on a 55-yard fumble return by David, who then went from hero to goat thanks to the exploits of Manning and wide receivers Marvin Harrison (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3514) and Reggie Wayne (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5477). In his defense, David didn't get much help from his safeties on two of the three scores he surrendered. Still, he had as long and disappointing a night as the New Orleans offense.
The Saints managed only 293 yards, their second-lowest output under coach Sean Payton, and 18 first downs. But 134 of those yards and half the first downs came in garbage time, when the outcome already was decided and the Indianapolis defense fell back into a soft zone.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5479), the NFL's leader in passing yards in 2006, threw for just 192 yards, with his longest completion at 23 yards. How significant is that second number? Last season, Brees led the league in completions of 20 yards or more, with 41, and he had at least one completion of 40-plus yards in 12 different games. Brees' anemic average of 6.9 yards per completion against the Colts is believed to be one of the lowest in NFL history.
Sure, it was only one game, but the young Colts might have served notice Thursday night that, in attempting to defend their Super Bowl title, they will be more than just a one-dimensional team known primarily for its offense.
"It was," Dungy concluded, "kind of exciting to watch."

To Reggie Bush's credit he was hurt last night....
As for the game itself Brees was shut down nicely by the defense. As for the Indy offense they went after a problem that almost every team in the NFL knew the saints had....secondary. There secondary is slow and can't cover. Each of those passes were just bombs where the WR outrun the DB. The Saints are pretty overrated by many analysts especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Last year in the Playoffs, if Mcnabb was healthy they would have lost to the Eagles. Stallworth was open all day long deep, but Garcia barely had the arm strength to get it down field. That first deep bomb for the TD felt like it was in the air for a minute.
I bet most teams just continue to go vertical on the Saints.
No real reason??? Surely you jest.

We get it. Colts win their first game. 1-0. Far from being 16-0, and repeat champs. It's a long season, and I truly think the Pats are going to the Super Bowl, against the Bears.
I don't wear Brady contacts, I despise the dude. I just think the Pats have better WR's this year, and the D looks scary.
But stop posting 5 stories related to the game. One is fine, just leave it at that. You're not making yourself look good by doing random pictures and news stories. Just stop. Please. You're cluttering up this great thread.

The Colts Championship is also part of history, same boat less paddles. I never said the Patriots had the Colts number, but Manning is not Brady and Brady is not Manning. Brady has had more success in the Post Season and Manning has had more sucess in the Regular Season. They are different quarterbacks in different situations. Brady is mentioned with the likes of Joe Montana and John Elway, and Manning is mentioned with the likes of Dan Marino. Doesn't mean one is better than the other, it's just a different story.

Of the 2000's?? Whoa, Jack! :wow: There are at least 100 years in a century, last time I checked. I'll say that they have been the best so far. But, We have 993 years to go. Only a great team can do what they've done. Never said weren't. But that's over. They got 3 rings. They gotta prove that they can go back.
I'd respond to your other posts, but they are too complicated because of your drunken quoting style.

I notice one or two more Bear fans besides me. But that first game is going to be tough against the Chargers.
That game scares me just the same because our secondary has this amazing talent of making a suspect QB like Rex have a career day. Then there's your D who I think is going to pay no respect to our pass offense to shut down Tomlinson and they may be able to get away with because our receivers outside of Gates are all unproven and your DB's are solid.
Jerry!
09-08-2007, 12:32 AM
I don't really know too much about the Chargers defense or secondary other than Merriman and Jammer. If the defense can just be as they usually are, it really does just fall onto Rex's shoulders and Benson's as well. I don't think our defense and special teams are going to be able to pull a win out against the Chargers without some good offense. Against almost any other team I believe otherwise, but against the Patriots, Colts and Chargers I don't. IF the Bears can establish the run against the Chargers, I think they have a good shot at winning. But thats a big if.

That's not going to happen ...unless Berrian gets behind our secondary and Grossman connects, which is very possible against us, our safties are still showing mental lapses covering the deep ball. Their stupidity is the reason you played Indy rather than us in the Super Bowl.

Or Hester, he's the fastest wide out the Bears have. Hell he is probably the fastest guy in the league. I really hope they don't just throw these little screen passes to him throughout the year though. Get him out there on slant or just throw a bomb to him like Berrian, all he has to do is out run the corner basically. He looks good catching the ball but those screens aren't going to fool anyone. I hope they try that at least once against the Chargers, just bomb it out to him, who cares if its intercepted, its going to be on the other side of the field.

Right now, all I care about is crushing New England next Sunday. I'll take a loss to Chicago this weekend if meant a definite destruction of New England. It's not playoff vengence. I JUST HATE THE PATRIOTS/REDSOX!!! And yes it's a personal thing with m*******s in general, and Tom Brady, and the media's unhealthy love for him and Belicheck. And how we get to hear every ten seconds how they are the ones the make the world turn and we should all bow down before them and kiss the very ground they walk ...but they claim that they never get any respect.

I've never seen him under throw a long pass THAT bad as to what you are referring to. On those long throws he has under thrown some of them, but like I said, its like a punt basically. Just don't get those short passes intercepted. Thats what gets you in trouble. Grossman has a good arm, its his decision making that is suspect.

I'm going to tell you something, there are great many things that irk me about Boston/New England, and it ranges from sports to losing a girl to guy from there and the absolute icing on the cake of all things is Reche Caldwell.
Here's a guy that was such a bust when he was with we called him Ricochet. A guy that in two separate seasons, fumbled in the clutch costing us a posting season birth. You guys bring him and last season and just cut him, but not before the guy makes the one single play that ever mattered in his career which was catching that 40+ yarder against us in the playoffs that pretty much drove the spear through our heart and set up the winning field goal. I can't get over that! The one time the guy decides to let the ball stay in his hands......

I'd rather see Hester used as a decoy or quick hich where he could use his speed. Berrian is our deep threat. Hester has to learn the position before he becomes a real threat. Our saving grace this weekend is LT hasn't played in any games yet and may be a bit rusty and have fumble fingers.

Why have just one deep threat when you can easily have two? Theres not that much to learn about those deep routes, he has had the entire offseason training camp and preseason to do it and every one from the team is saying he has picked it up really well. Using him as a decoy isn't using him to his potential. Using him as a deep threat is using his speed. Those quick hitches, screen passes aren't going to work as well as people think. Good corners and safeties aren't going to be fooled by that, everyone knows about Hester. But not everyone is as fast as him. Use him as a deep threat.

Pitt up 24-0 now. 3 TD passes for Big Ben. Its funny how both Browns QBs are 3/10 and 4/10. Maybe they should give Quinn a chance.
Crennel actually seemed as if he was sticking his chest out about Quinn not starting this week. I din't get it. Between Lewis, Edwards and Winslow, they've got some decent skill players. Frye has shown he's inconsistent and only mildly effective, at best when he is on. Let the kid play. He had 4 years in a pro style system under a former top-notch NFL offensive coordinator. I think he's got the mettle to take his lumps and improve as the season goes on. The team isn't going anywhere this year regardless.

I guess the Steelers don't want to kill him this year, so he plays better.
