That is one HELL of a contract Niners...:wow:

Let's take it easy now...still got a long free agency period...

In more signing news...we just signed S Michael Lewis from the Eagles.

Theres also reports that Nate Clements has signed with them as well

I still think he will Sign with the 49ers .

2. The biggest loser Friday was the Ravens. Right out of the box, they lost three players -- right tackle Tony Pashos (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6509), Mughelli and Franklin. They are expected to lose linebacker Adalius Thomas (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5215) to the Patriots on Saturday morning. The Ravens stopped some of the bleeding by re-signing defensive tackle Jarret Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6445) for around $13 million over three years. Plus, they also have a decent chance of re-signing halfback Jamal Lewis (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5034). Last year, the Ravens lost several players in the opening days of free agency but were able to rebound. Can they do the same thing again?

The Buccaneers were reportedly close to signing free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia late Friday night.

Talks between Garcia and Oakland broke off Friday evening and the ex-Eagle turned his attention to Tampa Bay. The deal could be announced as soon as Saturday, according to the Tampa Tribune, although the St. Petersburg Times reports Garcia remains on the Texans' radar

He is a good leader, he is not a great QB. If he was back on the Eagles, or a team of equal or greater talent, then he would be a very very good back-up QB.

He is now on a less talented team (no offense CMill) and in a position where he may get a starting role. Garcia is no longer a starting QB.

Plus, lets not forget that he is now 37.

I fail to see how a "very good backup QB" is capable of turning a team around in a way the starting QB could not, and posting brilliant numbers (10tds, 2 INTs) and taking them to within four points of the NFC title game.

He is now on a less talented team (no offense CMill)

None taken. But if we can actually manage to stay healthy next year (which was a major problem last year), and we can nab a guy like Calvin Johnson with our 1st Round pick, that instantly makes Tampa a decent team. The NFC is that wish washy, as is the NFC South, where last place one year means first place the next. ;)

Plus, lets not forget that he is now 37.

I think that age thing is a bit overrated, specifically in his case. Did he look like a 37-year-old last season, running around making plays?

Well things just got interesting down here in Tampa.

The Bucs not only nabbed Garcia, but the Plummer trade just went through. Jake to the Bucs for a 2008 conditional draft pick? WTH? :wow:

EDIT: Reading more on it, he's probably not going to set foot on a field with Tampa, but the Bucs have his rights, which means they can deal him elsewhere. Interesting.

I've been on top of this situation (), so here's what I can tell ya:

Many Bucs fans are freaking out right now and are cursing the names of Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden for this bizarre day. Garcia is here to stay (no doubt there), but Plummer could likely be used in a trade to Houston (which may be the only place he'd actually like to go in a trade because of Kubiak).

I'll have more on this developing story as soon as I attach my head back on.

More on the shenanigans:

TRADE PUTS PLUMMER IN A CORNER

The trade of quarterback Jake Plummer to the Bucs is aimed at preventing Plummer from retiring for a few months and then unretiring to play for the Texans, explains Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Per Schefter, the trade states that Plummer either unretires and plays for the Bucs, or Plummer retires and the Broncos retain the ability to pursue the unallocated portion of his signing bonus.

But if Plummer unretires, Tampa will have to have $5.3 million in cap room to carry his base salary. So, in essence, Plummer can opt to force Tampa's hand by saying, "Sure, I'll show up." It will force Tampa to pay him $5.3 million or cut him.

Or trade him, perhaps to the Texans.

Regardless of how it all works out, it's an odd development for a day on which the headline in Tampa should be the acquisition of quarterback Jeff Garcia.

Bruce Allen admitted he was aware of Jake Plummer’s desire to posibily retire, but went through with the trade anyway.

“I’m sure he just wants to weigh some things on his mind,” Allen said.

Allen is still holding out hope Plummer will be one of the quarterbacks the Bucs take to training camp with them this summer.

“We traded for him, we own his rights, we’ll have further discussions at a later time,” Allen said. “But there is a possibility he doesn’t play the 2007 season.”

The success of Garcia can be placed heavily on the emergence of a running game the Eagles stuck to and a regenerated Eagles Defense.

Oh, he undoubtedly makes them better for the simple fact that he fits Jon's scheme far better than Chris. Simms has a much slower (vertical based) release and isn't nearly as mobile as Jeff. Obviously, Garcia isn't getting any younger, yes, but the man's got at least two or three good years in him before he starts to show a legit decline in talent.

Jon's had tremendous success with veteran quarterbacks, much like Jeff Garcia. He made Rich Gannon, he brought the best out of Brad Johnson, and completely resurrected Brian Griese. He'll do wonders for Garcia, who comes into this scenario in a far better position than the aforementioned vets. Jeff inherits a good young running back, a veteran burner at wide receiver, a pair of solid tight ends, and a young offensive line that gained a lot of experience through last year. God willing we bring in Calvin Johnson, and look out.

You may very well be right, I am still not sold on Jeff right now though. You take away last season and he has been fairly lack luster the last few years - no one wanted him. I am just not sure which one is the real Jeff Garcia - the one we saw last year, or the Jeff Garcia of the Lions and the Browns.

You do bring up a very good point in Rich Gannon and Gruden's success with what many would see as "over-the-hill" QB's

I agree with you here 100% Jeff Garcia is going to fit in like a missing puzzle piece. Chris Simms has had below moderate success when given the chance, basically in 2005. He's been in the league for 4 years and hasn't proven much of anything. Jeff Garcia on the other hand, has had an abudance of success including last year. The Buc's apparently felt that Chris Simm's wasn't the answer, or they wouldn't have brought in Garcia.

StorminNorman

If the Bucs really feel that Sims is not the answer, they need to start looking at a QB like Stanton in the draft.

No need. Bruce Gradkowski.

If Simms is indeed a bust, they have their next best young bet sitting right there. That experience he gained from last season is going to pay off tremendously. And honestly, he's physically very similar to a Jeff Garcia type of quarterback and a perfect model QB for Jon's system. He's just got to improve his ability to read the D (something that'll come with experience) and he's got to work on his downfield touch. But he'll be solid.

He's been in the league for 4 years and hasn't proven much of anything.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that. Chris does have one thing going for him: in his short time, he's been money in the clutch (evidenced by his performance against the Redskins, Falcons twice, and even in the spleen game against Carolina).

I am just not sure which one is the real Jeff Garcia - the one we saw last year, or the Jeff Garcia of the Lions and the Browns.

Those teams (Detroit and Cleveland) had one thing in common: they sucked ass. And really, his numbers in Cleveland weren't even that bad. I think it was like 10 TDs, 9 INTs. If he has talent around him (which he will here), and a half decent offensive mind to direct him, the man can do wonders.

Not saying he's the second coming (:D), but it's a perfect pickup for this team, and it will force Simms (and in some regards Gradkowski) to get their **** together.

BUCS TO SHIP PLUMMER TO RAIDERS?

There's speculation in league circles that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will eventually trade quarterback Jake Plummer to the Oakland Raiders.

The thinking is that the Raiders are interested in acquiring Plummer as a short-term starter while expected No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell gets ready to play, but that there's no way that the Raiders and Broncos ever could have done business together.

Enter the Bucs, who could end up being the straw man for a deal that puts Plummer in silver and black

San Francisco is looking for a player to replace troubled Antonio Bryant, who was released by the team late in the week, but we're not sure Lelie will be a great fit. The Titans are jerks for releasing Henry.

ESPN.com has learned that Henry was en route to Denver on Saturday evening to meet with Broncos officials. It is believed that Henry is now the top choice of the Broncos as they seek to upgrade at the tailback position.

The seven-year veteran and unrestricted free agent has made it clear he would like to remain a Jaguar, but the feeling is apparently not mutual, as the the club hasn't been returning his calls since offering him a deal that he estimates was less in base salary than his 2006 contract.

"I've got so much love for the city," said Grant, who was the Jags' starting free safety last season. "I've got mad love for the community, my teammates, everybody out there. We've got a real bond and friendship in the locker room. I just don't understand why you'd want to break that up."

McMichael is set to collect a $3 million roster bonus along with his $1 million base salary for 2007.

"They have not said anything to me about it nor have any teams contacted me about it," agent Drew Rosenhaus said. "I've got no comment on it because it's the first I've heard of it."

Chiefs looking for protection

Mar. 3-- Kansas brought Chris McIntosh in for a visit on Friday, the Kansas City Star reports. McIntosh, a starter for Miami at left tackle last season, would presumably replace Jordan Black, who is an unrestricted free agent. He could provide some stability to an otherwise uncertain offensive line.

Porter has plenty of suitors

Mar. 3-- Two of Pittsburgh's biggest rivals have quickly entered the Joey Porter sweepstakes, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Cincinnati and Cleveland, along with Miami and others, contacted Porter's agent, Jeff Sperbeck.

Porter, who was released by the Steelers on Thursday, has not scheduled any visits and likely won't until next week "when we have it narrowed down and decide who has the most interest and the fit that's best for him," Sperbeck said.

The veteran linebacker would reportedly like to top the $5 million salary he was to receive this season from the Steelers.

Vikings, Lions eyeing Curtis

Mar. 3-- The Vikings entertained Curtis on Friday, the Pioneer Press reports. The free-agent wideout is expected to head to Detroit on Saturday to visit with the Lions and former Rams head coach Mike Martz, now the Lions' offensive coordinator.

I played my friend in Madden 07( who isn't close to my level)on the 360 and I ended getting beat becuase I'm so use to playstation. I felt like I was out of my element. When I tried tp play bump & run, I kept jumping offsides. There is no DEFENSIVE PLAYMAKER! WTF?! I felt naked and helpless without it.

The word I'm getting is that it's more about the roster bonus than anything else. Randy's good, but he's not one of the elite tight ends in the league. Cameron's got Peele there (who he knows from San Diego). Though his production has never been akin to Randy's, it could be felt his familiarity with the system will help him step up and allow Miami to make better use of that cap space, along with whatever they get back via a McMichael trade. Just a thought.

The Patriots are extremely intrested in Randy Moss and are exploring trade possibilities. Belechick believes that he can reign in this guy as he did Corey Dillon and give Brady a major threat.

The Pats have also offered Wes Welker a 7 year deal that can be matched by the Dolphins within a 7 day period. Not sure if it is either Welker or Moss at this point.

That is alot of money to throw his way. The key is that he will be returning kicks and punts as well, in essence taking the place of Troy Brown, who is in most likely his last year. He is a small receiver which fits right into the Patriots system. The question is does this cancel out the Randy Moss rumors?

It's also being reported that the Patriots have intrest in Dante Stalworth (Sp).

Deal gives Davis fresh start, largest bonus in Cowboys history
By STEPHEN HAWKINS, AP Sports Writer

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Leonard Davis got exactly what he wanted by signing with the Dallas Cowboys.

It was more than just the money: a seven-year contract worth nearly $50 million. It was a return home after six disappointing seasons in Arizona, where the 6-foot-6, 372-pound offensive lineman never became the dominating Pro Bowl-level player so many envisioned after he was the No. 2 pick out of Texas in 2001.

"I felt like I did everything that I could possibly do. ... Sometimes expectations can be unrealistic," Davis said. "I'm excited just to know that something new is coming up. It will be a challenge, but I'm all about challenges."

The deal with the Cowboys includes $18.75 million in guaranteed money, a team-record $16 million signing bonus and a $2.75 million salary for 2007. Davis became an unrestricted free agent when Arizona decided not to name him a franchise or transition player.

Davis played guard and tackle while starting all 91 of his games in Arizona. Where he plays for the Cowboys depends on whether they re-sign right tackle Marc Colombo and the future of right guard Marco Rivera, who just had surgery on his back for the second time in less than three years.

"We understand what he is as an offensive lineman. There's nothing in my mind at all unknown about what he is as a player," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "We can talk about expectations all we want to. What he's done is the kind of play at any of those positions that will get it done for us, or we wouldn't be making the commitment."

Jones said the Cowboys had also agreed to terms on a new contract with kicker Martin Gramatica, who was picked up in November when Mike Vanderjagt was released.

The 28-year-old Davis visited with Washington, and the New York Giants were interested.

"The decision when it came down to it was not about the money. It was about where I really wanted to live my life," Davis said.

Davis is from Wortham, Texas, about 80 miles south of Dallas. Being close to home will provide the opportunity for his 84-year-old father to see him play in person and for Davis to play for the team he grew up watching.

"It's a new chapter in my life," he said. "I want to win games, which obviously I haven't been able to do in this part of my career. Right now, all I can do is look forward to being successful. ... I want to be able to have some respect, earn respect."

Davis' signing bonus surpasses the $13 million the Cowboys gave Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, defensive back Deion Sanders and former perennial Pro Bowl guard Larry Allen.

The deal came days after free agent linemen Eric Steinbach (Cleveland Browns) and Derrick Dockery (Buffalo Bills) got similar seven-year deals that included $17 million to $18.5 million in guaranteed money.

While Davis was being introduced to the media, quarterback Tony Romo came in to greet his new protector.

"I just know that he's a good player. We definitely got someone that gets me excited," Romo said. "Anytime you can get a guy to protect you up front, it's a huge addition."

The Cowboys are still hopeful of re-signing Colombo, and Jones said the signing of Davis "doesn't preclude" that. The Cowboys already re-signed center Andre Gurode to a $30 million, six-year deal with $10 million guaranteed.

Jones said the offensive line was a priority this offseason.

"We've missed on a couple of our picks the last three or four years," Jones said. "(Davis) gives us a chance to really play catch-up and really get back to where, arguably, if we had gotten a little better results on our draft there on a couple of picks, we would be."

Davis visits Dallas, Washington next

Mar. 3-- As expected, Leonard Davis visited the Cowboys on Saturday, touring the facilities and taking a physical, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Davis, who is drawing interest from every team in the NFC East, left Dallas without a contract agreement and will visit the Redskins next.

He could be an option for the Cowboys at right tackle if they lose Marc Colombo in free agency, and he could be an option at right guard for Marco Rivera, who might be forced to retire.

Dallas singing Davis makes sense.

Some more ESPN Insider updates coming...

ALL OF THESE ARE TODAY'S UPDATES!

Moss a possibility for the Patriots?
The Boston Herald is reporting that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick would consider acquiring Randy Moss for the right price. The Packers have been considered the front-runners to land Moss in a trade with Oakland, but neither side appears to be in a hurry to consummate a deal. The Packers have offered backup QB Aaron Rodgers; the Raiders are holding out for a first-round pick.

The Raiders appear determined to unload Moss due to his cavalier attitude and high cap number ($11.7 million). In two seasons with the Raiders, Moss has caught 102 passes for 1,558 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Curtis leaning toward Lions?
Kevin Curtis met with the Lions on Sunday, but the sides did not come to a contract agreement, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Curtis, a free-agent wide receiver, has also visited Minnesota. Of the two, it is believed Curtis prefers the Lions due to his relationship with offensive coordinator Mike Martz, his former coach in St. Louis.

Banta-Cain Pittsburgh bound?
The Steelers, who are seeking versatile linebackers and a replacement for Joey Porter, are interested in Tully Banta-Cain, according to multiple reports.

In four years in New England, Banta-Cain excelled as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme, and also showed the versatility to play defensive end in the 4-3. In 2006, Banta-Cain had 43 tackles and 5˝ sacks.

Banta-Cain, 26, visited St. Louis on March 2. He has also received interest from Miami and San Francisco.

Dolphins turn to Washington
With WR Wes Welker headed to New England, the Dolphins have set their sights on Kelley Washington. In fact, the team could could make him an offer as early as today, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Buried on the wide receiver depth chart in Cincinnati, the 27-year-old Washington showed a lot of promise early in his career. He caught 53 passes for seven touchdowns during his first two seasons (2003-04). Hindered by hamstring injury in 2006, Washington caught on nine passes for 115 yards.

Johnson making visits
Brad Johnson was in Denver on Sunday and is expected to visit Dallas today, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The veteran quarterback was recently released by the Vikings, making him a free agent.

Saints eyeing Draft
Looking to add depth to their linebacking corps, the Saints have expressed interest in Chris Draft, according to the The Times-Picayune.

Draft, 31, made a strong impression on the Saints in the 2006 regular-season finale. In Carolina's 31-21 victory, Draft had a game-high 14 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

Carter looking for a home
Kevin Carter, who was released by the Dolphins on March 2, is meeting with Tampa Bay today, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The veteran defensive end, who started all 32 games for the Dolphins the past two seasons, is also being pursued by Tennessee.

Jets considering Bowens?
The Jets are scheduled to meet with Tim Bowens today, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Bowens, who has played for the Dolphins since 2001, had five sacks and a fumble recovery in limited playing time last season.

In exchange, New England sent an undisclosed draft picks to Miami. SI.com is reporting that the Patriots are sending their 2007 second- and seventh-round draft picks to Miami in exchange for Welker.

ESPN.com first reported Saturday that the Patriots planned to sign Welker to a restricted free agent offer sheet. But the two teams obviously decided to avoid the red-tape and uncertainty that accompanies such a transaction and opted for a trade instead.

Receiver en route :

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | March 6, 2007

After signing linebacker Adalius Thomas, tight end Kyle Brady, and running back Sammy Morris Saturday -- and acquiring Welker yesterday -- one might think the Patriots' offseason would be slowing down. Not so, as the team is expected to host free agent receiver Donte' Stallworth today. Stallworth played for the Eagles last season, appearing in 12 games and totaling 38 receptions for 725 yards (19.1-yard average) and five touchdowns.

He entered the league in 2002 with the Saints as a first-round draft choice, and caught a career-high 70 passes in 2005. He was traded to the Eagles last August. The 6-foot, 196-pound Stallworth, who yesterday received a contract offer to return to the Eagles, is also scheduled to meet with the Titans. Stallworth is in the NFL's substance-abuse program, according to a report in yesterday's Philadelphia Inquirer, which might be affecting the interest in him in free agency.

television station in Pittsburgh is reporting free agent LB Joey Porter will sign a five-year, $24 million contract with the Miami Dolphins.

The report says Porter will get $12 million to sign, a hefty figure, but this is a great addition to coordinator Dom Capers' defense. Porter, 30 in March, should still have three-to-four quality years left and is a big upgrade over Donnie Spragan. Miami could still add linebacker help in the draft.

I don't know. Dillon always ran his mouth and was a bit selfish when he found himself out of the mix (behind the emergence of Rudi Johnson) when Cinci finally started winning games. However, I don't recall anybody ever questioning his passion for the game or his effort. Randy was an ass even when Minnesota was winning and making regular trips to the playoffs. That 'I play when I want to' crap and him routinely giving up on plays happened when he was still a prominent receiver on a good team. It's the same garbage in Oakland. He popped off last year about how hard it was for him to play hard for a losing team. What a lazy ****! Moss just comes across as the type of guy who wants it his way, all the time. I wouldn't want him on my squad. Too high of a possibility of him flipping out...again. Beyond that, he looks to have lost a step and no longer seems to have that explosion and raw athleticism that made him the most feared deep threat in the game. Take into account that he was never a great route runner and this looks riskier than it sounds. IMO, they'd be much better off with Stallworth.

Green????? If I'm a Texan fan, I'm like this....

It's definitely a head-scratcher. I'd have rolled the dice on trying to draft Peterson or even going after (a younger) Travis Henry. Green has been productive, but a bit injury-prone in the last couple of years. A new 4Y/23M deal for a 30 year old RB just gets a  out of me. Besides, they need to be figuring out a way to keep their QB from getting knocked down every other play.

Ghostrider87 is just a very peculiar poster, who happens to be a die-hard Tennessee Titans fan. He has, in the past, gotten very mad at people who criticize the Titans, even when they lost their first six or so games last season.

On a different note, what can people tell me about a former Viking linebacker named Napoleon Harris? He just signed with the Chiefs, and will probably be the starter next season, since Kawika Mitchell is either going to sign with another team or be moved to the outside (which I think he'd be perfect for).

Mister J
03-06-2007, 06:15 PM
IIRC, Harris was involved in the Randy Moss trade (coming from Oakland). High profile guy (might have been first round). Showed some good promise with the Raiders, then I didn't hear much from him in Minnesota. I suppose he's still young enough to make an impact, but I'm guessing he didn't pan out the way the Vikings had hoped.

The Dolphins are probably the on their way to being the 3rd best team in the division behind the Patriots and the Jets. They do have a strong defense though and play the Patriots tough twice a year.

Pacman Jones has disgraced himself and his team and might never play in the NFL again because of his actions. The only thing he's showing the Titans is that they made a horrible judgement of his character.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (March 6, 2007) -- The Patriots re-signed unrestricted free agent linebacker Larry Izzo, keeping their special teams captain who played on New England's three Super Bowl championship teams.

Izzo, 32, has spent the last six of his 11 NFL seasons with the Patriots. He was named to the Pro Bowl three times, the last following the 2004 season.

Izzo has made 229 career special team tackles and 18 defensive tackles in 156 regular-season games. He also has an interception, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

Izzo, who spent his first five seasons in Miami, has led the Patriots in special teams tackles in five of six seasons.

STILL NO DEAL FOR STALLWORTH

Contrary to a report on ComcastSportsNet.com that receiver Donte' Stallworth has a deal with the New England Patriots, Profootballtalk.com has learned that there is no agreement.

ComcastSportsNet.com says that the deal was "confirmed . . . by the office of Drew Rosenhaus, Stallworth's agent."

Well, we tracked down Rosenhaus personally, and he told us: "There is no deal, and nothing is imminent."

Stallworth visited with the Patriots on Tuesday, and will next visit with the Titans, and then with the Dolphins. No decision on his next destination is expected until the end of the week, at the earliest.

[UPDATE: ComcastSportsNet.com has revised its story, calling the reports of a deal 'premature." In true Tribune-Review fashin, the reference to confirmation from the office of Drew Rosenhaus has been scrubbed out of the story.]

Donté Stallworth has not signed with anyone, yet.

The Eagles' free-agent receiver visited the Patriots Tuesday and was offered a six-year contract worth a reported $32 million. A deal has not been completed.

According to reports, Stallworth is scheduled to visit Tennessee and Miami. The Eagles reportedly offered Stallworth a contract on Monday.

In 12 games last season, his first with the Eagles after arriving in a trade with the Saints, Stallworth had 38 receptions for 725 yards and five touchdowns. He missed four games with a hamstring injury.

The Eagles acquired Stallworth from the Saints for linebacker Mark Simoneau and a conditional draft pick. If the Eagles re-sign Stallworth, they will send New Orleans a fourth-round pick.

What can I expect from Comcast Sports I guess, but that doesn't dispute the NESN report. Unless the NESN report was based on the Comcast report.

I doubt that Stalworth will be signing with Miami, the Porter signing could help or hurt the chances of that happening. Tennessee would be an attractive place to play with the emergence of Young, we'll see what happens in the next couple days.

Its Official: Joe Horn gets to handle Vicks balls next season.

Falcons agreed to terms with Joe Horn.

Horn would be a poor signing for most teams at his age. But for Bobby Petrino's vertical offense, Horn's consistent hands and veteran presence is a nice addition. Horn has missed 9 games in two years and Atlanta is unlikely to be an above-average passing attack, so don't expect Horn to be a top-15 fantasy wideout again.

Collins got benched and eventually ran out of Oakland ...OAKLAND. Their QB situation is so bad, they might as well be having open tryouts at the position. They still cut him. On top of that, Tennessee brought Collins in last year and he gummed up the works so bad in 2 or 3 games that he got yanked for a rookie. What exactly is Collins going to contribute to a guy who easily took his job?

The Cleveland Browns are happy to have Jamal Lewis on their side.

By Tom Withers, The Associated Press
CLEVELAND — The Browns finally tackled Jamal Lewis.
Unable to reach a deal to remain in Baltimore, the free agent running back signed a one-year deal on Wednesday with Cleveland, the team he blistered for an NFL single-game record 295 yards in 2003.

Lewis was released last week in a salary-cap move by the Ravens, who elected not to pay their career rushing leader a $5 million roster bonus. He'll now join the Browns, Baltimore's AFC North rival, who were last in the league in rushing in 2006.

"We are pleased to add Jamal Lewis to our team," Browns general manager Phil Savage said in a statement. "He is a proven NFL back who brings a toughness and demeanor to the game that his teammates and our fans will appreciate."

Lewis, 27, visited the Browns on Wednesday and decided to sign with the team before leaving town or talking to another team.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: NFL | Cleveland | Ravens | Browns | Lewis | AFC North | Romeo Crennel | Jamal Lewis | Free-agent | Phil Savage
Financial terms were not immediately available.

Lewis' agent, Mitch Frankel, did not return several messages seeking comment.

With the Ravens reportedly interested in acquiring Buffalo running back Willis McGahee, Lewis decided to look elsewhere and found a fit with the Browns — one of the teams he has torched while rushing for 7,801 yards and 45 TDs in seven seasons.

Lewis spent the afternoon at the Browns' facilities in suburban Berea, meeting with Savage and coach Romeo Crennel. Savage was with the Ravens in 2000 when the club drafted Lewis in the first round out of Tennessee.

Lewis, the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year in 2003, is an upgrade at running back for the Browns, who now have to figure out what to do with feature back Reuben Droughns. They owe Droughns a $1.75 million roster bonus later this month, but may choose to cut him instead.

Slowed by injuries, Droughns rushed for just 758 yards last season after gaining 1,232 yards in 2005 — the first Cleveland back to eclipse 1,000 yards since 1985.

Crennel recently said that he isn't dissatisfied with Droughns.

"He has shown us that he does have the ability, that he can be a productive runner for us," Crennel said. "I expect him to get back to that form that he had. That 1,200-yard form. That's what I'm looking for."

Adding Lewis also gives the Browns more options as they plan for April's college draft. The club was believed to be targeting Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson with the No. 3 overall pick, but with Lewis on his roster, Savage may be able to address other needs.

In 2003, Lewis rushed for 2,066 yards, the second-highest total in league history. Last season, he ran for 1,132 yards and nine touchdowns, but averaged just 3.6 yards per carry. He recently underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his ankle.

Two years ago, Lewis served time in prison after a guilty plea to using a cellphone to set up a drug buy.

A powerful, punishing runner, Lewis is the type of between-the-tackles back the Browns have desperately needed since returning to the league in 1999. His signing will help Cleveland's deplorable running game, which got a boost last week when the club signed free agent offensive lineman Eric Steinbach to a seven-year, $49.5 million deal.

Falcons sign WR Joe Horn

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement with veteran free agent receiver Joe Horn, who is expected to play a lead role in new coach Bobby Petrino's efforts to balance the offense.
Team spokesman Reggie Roberts said a 6 p.m. news conference has been scheduled to introduce Horn, the former four-time Pro Bowl player with New Orleans.

Horn, 35, has missed nine games the last two seasons with groin and hamstring injuries, including six games last season. Negotiations with the Falcons gained momentum after Horn passed a physical exam administered by the team.

Horn told the New Orleans Times-Picayune the Falcons are offering him $19 million over four years, including a guaranteed $7.5 million in the first two years.

"The coaching staff wanted me to come here, needed me here," Horn told the newspaper Wednesday night. "I felt loved. I felt wanted from the front office to the janitors. I knew I would be treated with dignity and respect."

The Falcons led the NFL in rushing for the third straight year but finished last with only 148 yards passing per game. Petrino plans to add more three- and four-receiver sets to the Michael Vick-led offense, making receiver one of the offseason areas of emphasis. The Falcons lost free-agent receiver Ashley Lelie to San Francisco.

Horn will join the team as a starter but also will be called on to serve as a position leader for Michael Jenkins and Roddy White, first-round picks who have struggled with inconsistency.

Tight end Alge Crumpler led the team with 56 receptions last season. Among receivers, Jenkins was the leader with 39 catches for 436 yards and seven touchdowns.

Despite missing six games, Horn had 37 catches for 679 yards and four touchdowns last season.

From 2000-2004, Horn recorded four 1,000-yard seasons with the Saints. He set highs with 94 catches in 2000 and again in 2004.

TITANS DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT RAIN MAN'S '06 ARRESTS

That the Tennessee Titans admit that they did not know about the two early 2006 arrests of cornerback Rain Man Jones for obstruction and marijuana possession.

"We were unaware of what happened over a year ago," coach Jeff Fisher said in a radio interview.

And, as we explained last week, the fact that Jones didn't disclose the charges puts him in line for potential discipline under the Personal Conduct Policy, regardless of the outcome of the cases. The marijuana possession charges previously were dismissed, after two other people (including Jones' mother) persuaded authorities that the pot found in Jones' Fayette County, Georgia house was theirs. Felony and misdemeanor obstruction charges, based in part on allegations that Rain Man went Pacman on a police offer in February 2006, are still pending.

The fact that Jones didn't fess up to the charges gives the league an easy way to take serious action against him. An NFL player's failure to report a criminal arrest is, in the Internet age, unprecedented, since word of the incident inevitably makes its way to those like us who are inclined to publicize it. So the NFL can basically pick the penalty, since there's no past event to which this one could be compared.

Though on one hand Jones' failure to report the alleged crimes gives the NFL a silver bullet, if it chooses to use it, for ridding the league of a guy who could find trouble in a convent, taking a firm stand on this point would send a strong message to every other player about the importance of owning up to their transgressions.

Bottom line -- if you fail to come clean, you face serious consequences.

And this is no mere technicality. If/when an active player is accused of a crime, the league wants to be able to evaluate the situation early, long before the Cheese Whiz is made. (If you don't get that one, scroll down.) More importantly, failure to disclose the arrest undermines the integrity of the system. How, after all, can the league take appropriate action against a criminal offender if no one bothers to tell the league that there was a criminal offense?

It really isn't a problem that will come up very often, and we're amazed that the story went undetected for as long as it did. But that's all the more reason for the league to make an example out of Rain Man -- especially since making an example out of him will in this specific case save the Titans and the league from all of the future embarrassments that he is sure to cause.

Well hooters ,what do you have to say about that.

I calculate the pick values as follows from the draft value chart

2007 Rd 3 (#93) = 128 points
2007 Rd 7 (# 221) = 3 points
2008 Rd 3 (# 80 est) = 190 points - 120 points because PV is 2007 4th (#112) = 70 points
TOTAL = 201 points

Our 2007 Rd 2 (# 61) = 292 points by itself!

Therefore we did much better to trade 2007 3rd and 2008 3rd (really a 2007 4th for presetn value purposes)

By the way I calculated the 2008 3rd as a mid round pick #80. If we do well next year and that pick becomes a low 3rd rounder then we will make out even better on the deal.

Good trade.

Giants interested in Edwards (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Giants-interested-in-Edwards?urn=nfl,26038)

The New York Giants (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyg/) are interested in former San Diego Chargers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/sdg/) LB Donnie Edwards (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/3637/), according to someone familiar with the team's plans.
But the person said it's not likely the Giants will be able to meet Edwards' price tag. Even though Edwards will be 34, he'll get paid in this free-agent market after recording 141 tackles, 2 1/2 sacks and three interceptions last year.

The latest rumor making the rounds is juicy enough to discuss, even if it's about as far-fetched as they come. Word is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/tam/) are interested in Oakland Raiders (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/oak/) receiver Randy Moss (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4262/), for whom Oakland is thought to be entertaining trade offers.
The Bucs are just the latest team to be linked to Moss. Already, the Green Bay Packers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/gnb/) and New England Patriots (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nwe/) are said to be interested in trading for him.

For more info on McMichael, Johnson (http://www.stlouisrams.com/article/60811/) ST. LOUIS (March 8, 2007) -- Tight end Randy McMichael (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/302087), who has averaged 65 catches the past three seasons, agreed to a three-year contract with the St. Louis Rams (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/STL).
McMichael, released by Miami for salary-cap purposes, brings experience to a position the Rams filled with rookies last season and provides them with a catching tight end.
Second-round draft pick Joe Klopfenstein (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/414664), the starter in 2006, had 20 catches. A second rookie tight end, third-round pick Dominique Byrd (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/407684), was recently arrested on suspicion of DUI and also faces charges of assault and armed criminal action in a separate case.
The Rams also agreed on a four-year contract with safety Todd Johnson (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396001), who spent the past four seasons with the NFC champion Chicago Bears and was a part-time starter last year.
McMichael, 6-3 and 255 pounds, spent the past five seasons with the Dolphins and last year was second on the team with 62 receptions for 640 yards and three touchdowns. He was fifth in the AFC in receptions for tight ends and sixth in yards. The reception and yardage totals were the second highest of his career.
Rams coach Scott Linehan was offensive coordinator at Miami before coming to St. Louis.
"This has been in the works for a while," Linehan said. "We even considered trading for him. He is an every-down tight end and a proven starter in the league."
McMichael is the Dolphins' career leader for tight ends with 283 receptions, and his string of 80 consecutive starts ranks second behind Ozzie Newsome for the most by a tight end to open a career since 1970.
McMichael was a fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in the 2002 draft out of Georgia.
Johnson, a fourth-round pick in 2003 out of Florida, started six games and played in 12 regular-season games last year and finished with 34 tackles, one forced fumble and 10 special-teams tackles. He also saw action in all three postseason games.
Johnson had a career-high 10 starts in 2004 and made a career-best 16 special-teams tackles in 2005. He has played at both safety positions.

The Titans are certainly poised to be a playoff team, but what additions have they made so far in the offseason to get better? Have they addressed their needs.

Unfortunately with teams like the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers in the AFC...the Titans have not a hill to climb, but a mountain. Mount Everest.
