I heard on the Dan Patrick show (or was it The Herd?) that the Redskins are suppose to be very interested in Calvin Johnson and trading up.

Why? Because Dan Snyder is...less than brilliant when it comes to personal moves - there is really no other reason.

Not to mention the Redskins do not have the ammo to move up. It might cost them the rest of their draft and/or some of their draft next year. When it comes to the top pick in the draft you can just throw the "point scale" out the window. It is who gives the most.

StorminNorman

The fact that this move seems completely illogical is what makes me think Snyder may try it :o

The only team outside the top 5 that has a shot of nabbing Johnson would be the Falcons. The Redskins have absolutely zero to offer.

What I'm interested to see is if this Trent Green deal goes down. He goes to Miami, Miami realeses Culpepper and Oakland signs him. Then Oakland drafts CJ #1.

Cmill216

Obviously, all the pieces seem there. But the problem I see is: if Culpepper's not healthy enough to start for Miami, how the bloody hell is he suppose to help Oakland?

NewYorkSpider

That would be a risky move to sign Culpepper. His problem last year was coming back to fast from injury.

I caught a report with John Clayton going over the same deal. Apparently, the Dolphins and Green have worked out some kind of agreement to terms. They just can't work out what compensation goes back to KC. Speculation is that if they can get it worked out by Saturday, Culpepper goes to Oakland and they draft CJ. If not, the Raiders draft Russell and the Dolphins take their chances at #9 (or try moving up a little) to get Brady Quinn.

Rams acquire Dante Hall by trading 5th-rounder to Chiefs.

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Rams' long search for a return man ended Wednesday when the team acquired Dante Hall from Kansas City in exchange for a fifth-round pick in this weekend's draft.

"We have filled a need with one of the top players in football at his specialty, returning punts and kicks," Rams coach Scott Linehan said. "Dante will fit nicely on our special teams and can be utilized as a receiver in certain situations."

The trade could have draft-day implications. The Rams had expressed strong interest in Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr., as much for his return ability as for his resume as a receiver. St. Louis also has several needs on defense.

As part of the trade, the teams swapped positions in the third round -- the Chiefs moving up to 82nd overall, the Rams down to 84th.

"We have to get younger, and the only way you can do that is through the draft," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said. "You're going to have to give up something to get something."

The trade also gives Kansas City seven draft choices.

"We feel that it's always important to have at least seven draft picks," Chiefs president Carl Peterson said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to acquire another one or two in the days to come."

The Rams have struggled for years on kick returns. Last season, St. Louis averaged 7.8 yards per punt return. Only five teams were worse. The Rams were 26th in kickoff returns, averaging 21.3 yards.

The 28-year-old Hall has returned 11 kickoffs and punts for touchdowns in his seven-year career, including four (two kickoffs, two punts) in 2003. Brian Mitchell holds the record with 14 kick-return touchdowns, followed by Eric Metcalf with 12.

Hall also needs one more kickoff return for a touchdown to break the record of six he shares with Ollie Matson, Gale Sayers, Travis Williams and Mel Gray.

Hall was the NFL's top returner from 2002-04. His production declined the last two season, though he had one punt return for a touchdown last season, on Oct. 1 against San Francisco.

In 2003, he averaged 25.9 yards per kickoff return and 16.3 yards per punt return.

Last season, Hall averaged 22.8 yards on 53 kickoff returns and 8.9 yards on 27 punt returns. He also caught 26 passes, two for touchdowns.

For his career, all of it with Kansas City, Hall averaged 24 yards per kickoff return and 10 yards per punt return.

I'd still like Ginn. :o

Its hard to win games on your back, which is what Houston game in, game out year after year asked him to do.

He has shown the ability to be a big time QB - in flashes. It is this potential that we have seen that prevents him from being a labeled "BUST", he is a work in progress.

The stars of the NFL often are undrafted or lower round picks! Everyone likes to watch people FAIL-you know who failed this year...EVERYTEAM that are not YOUR INDIANAPOLIS COLTS!!! SUPERBOWL CHAMPS to the losers...

And please don't beat on the AFC South, they try-they compete in one of the if not the MAIN toughest divisions in all of SPORT. When the COLTS are on top of you, you have to make decisions that will help you beat them FIRST...then the AFC then the NFC before you talk about Lombardi.

Dammit, Al. If you weren't so senile, you'd take Calvin Johnson #1 and try to trade him to a team for a decent QB with experience instead of two rookies who'll take time getting a system and adjust to the NFL. But I guess that's why he's the owner and I'm a disgruntled fan.

Drug probe leads to discovery of ailing dogs

Associated Press
Posted: 14 hours ago
SMITHFIELD, Va. (AP) - Police conducting a drug investigation raided a house owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and found dozens of dogs, some injured and emaciated.
Police also found items associated with dog fighting.
State Police Sgt. D.S. Carr said Vick's relative, Davon Boddie, 26, lives in the house. Vick owns the property, but doesn't live there and wasn't present when a search warrant was executed in a drug investigation Wednesday night, Carr said.

Boddie was arrested outside a nightclub by Hampton police April 20 on charges of distribution of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute. The search warrant was executed by a multijurisdictional task force in a narcotics probe.

More than 60 dogs were found in three buildings. Some appeared malnourished, scarred and injured, officials said.

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, said the group has "heard troubling reports for some time that Michael Vick has been involved in organized dog fighting, and we fear that this investigation may validate that very disturbing allegation."

"We urge law enforcement to aggressively investigate this matter, and we further believe that anyone who harbors dogs for the purpose of fighting, deserves to be fully prosecuted for their crimes," Pacelle said in a statement. "Dog fighting is a barbaric activity that causes immense animal suffering and fosters violence in our communities. Our nation should have a zero tolerance policy for any form of staged animal fighting."

The Humane Society said dog fighting is illegal nationwide and a felony in 48 states, including both Virginia and Georgia.

The animal rights group PETA has asked Falcons owner Arthur Blank to suspend Vick pending the investigation and "to kick him off the team if it is found that dogs on Vick's property were neglected or used for fighting."

In a letter to Blank, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said it was the second time it was writing to the owner about one of his players and allegations of cruelty to animals. On Feb. 23, the organization wrote to him about defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux's felony charges in Georgia stemming from the fatal beating of a dog.

Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts said the team still was gathering information on the report and had no immediate comment.

A spokeswoman for Vick's foundation declined comment. Joel Segal, the quarterback's agent, and Larry Woodward, a Virginia attorney who has worked with both Vick and his younger brother, Marcus, didn't immediately return telephone messages seeking comment.

The probe at Vick's property is the latest in a serious of embarrassing incidents for the Atlanta quarterback.

He was named in a sordid lawsuit that accused him of knowingly infecting a woman with a sexually transmitted disease and using the alias "Ron Mexico" while seeking treatment. The case was settled out of court.

Last season, Vick flashed an obscene hand gesture to heckling Atlanta fans as he walked off the field following a dismal loss to New Orleans. He was fined $10,000 by the NFL and donated another $10,000 to charity.

In January, security officers at Miami International Airport seized a water bottle from Vick that they said smelled of marijuana and had a hidden compartment. Authorities later said there were no drugs in the bottle, and Vick explained that he used the secret compartment to carry jewelry.

Just this week, Vick came under more criticism when he failed to show for a lobbying appearance on Capitol Hill in support of increased funding for after-school programs. He missed a connecting flight in Atlanta and didn't turn up for a later flight.

Vick and two other former Virginia Tech stars — Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall and former Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith — are scheduled to join Hokies football coach Frank Beamer and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in a predraft ceremony in New York on Saturday to honor the victims of the recent shooting at the Blacksburg school.

Other athletes have been linked to dog fighting.

The NBA's Qyntel Woods pleaded guilty in January 2005 to animal abuse and was sentenced to probation and community service, in addition to pledging $10,000 to the Oregon Humane Society. Former NFL player LeShon Johnson has twice run afoul of the law for ties to dogfighting.

I'm so sick of hearing negative stuff related to this guy! :cmad: I can't wait till he's gone from the league!

Adam Schefter reports that the Detroit Lions WILL take Calvin Johnson with the number two pick unless they receive some sort of blockbuster deal.

According to another report from ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, the Buccaneers are not willing to make an outrageous offer to obtain Johnson and if push to come to shove the team will be content with whomever they get at number 4.

CMill's Take: If a reasonable Johnson deal doesn't go down, I expect the Bucs to nab either Joe Thomas, Gaines Adams, or Amobi Okoye with the number 4 pick (possibly even trading down a few slots if need be).

I really don't know what to make of that pick. Johnson is great, but the Lions need help elsewhere, especially on defense. Gaines Adams, maybe Alan Branch, even Okoye would have seen to be natural. On top of that, Brady Quinn (who's probably more NFL-ready than any other QB out there). I wonder how much of the trade talk between them and Tampa is just lip service.

:D  YEAH BABY!!!

i must disagree here, living in oakland i've seen 1st hand how disgusting this team is(which is great cause i'm a 49er faithful:woot: .This sack of crap team needs help on the offensive line in a bad way. Jamarcus would get killed behind that swiss chesse line.A qb is only as good as his offensive line,He wont have time to throw the ball with his incredible arm if hes runnin for his life.

Next thing you must do...get rid of randy moss and jerry porter..they both want out of oakland..so grant these big goofs their wish...package a deal, do something to get these jokers off the team...so go after a wr as well
Well we both seem to agree that the Raiders defense & Special teams are solid, that the Raiders need a franchise quarterback, that the RBs & WRs are suspect, and that Randy Moss needs to go(trade if possible); however, I would love to keep Porter. With that said, in the words of Woody Paige, “you are too close to the trees to see the forest” Mr. 49er. The Raiders Offensive line is good and talented… the problem was coaching. The coaching staff put the team consistently in the wrong offensive set, bad blocking schemes, and poor play calling. Add to the fact that the quarterbacks(Brooks & Walters) were a joke, the RBs & WRs are suspect, and the team were constantly in poor field position(allowing teams to press and blitz the middle and occasionally the corners). The Raiders could use another seasoned Tackle and maybe draft a blocking Tight-End, but the offensive line is ok imo. ;)

Mister J

This is stupid. Even if you pass on Quinn, we needed to address our aging defense. Christ, Branch and Okoye are still on the board. Even a CB like Hall would have been a better move. Drafting a WR, who's not a good route runner and has average hands.... I get it; He's fast. Get over it. Ginn shouldn't have gone until around 15 or so. Miami needed a better pick there. :down

I can't over how little sense this makes. It's like Mueller is responding to a dare or trying to win a bet.

Mister J

Dolphins General Manager Randy Mueller said he wanted to increase the team's speed, and there is no receiver prospect faster than Ginn, who runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.3-second range. While with Seattle and New Orleans, Mueller played a major role in bringing speedsters Joey Galloway (1995) and Donte' Stallworth (2002) to those clubs.

The Dolphins lost one wideout this offseason by trading Wes Welker to New England, and they now have three-year starter Marty Booker on the trading block.

With Welker gone, the team needed a returner. Ginn scored eight touchdowns on punts and kickoffs at Ohio State. Even if Ginn needs time to develop as a receiver as some predict, he could contribute immediately on special teams as Chicago's Devin Hester did with his NFL-record seven scores in 2006.
Get the **** out!

Who said that bull****?
A writer at oe of the local papers. I'm guessing he's talked to the GM since the pick and is trying to keep Dolphin fans from taking to the streets in rage.

It gets better...
Ginn has allies inside Dolphins headquarters, which he visited last week. Wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie, whose son Brian is a Buckeyes receiver, conducted Ginn's workout with Mueller and coach Cam Cameron in attendance.

Receiver Chris Chambers is a childhood friend who has said he would love to tutor Ginn.

And Cameron first met Ginn as a teenager while still coach at Indiana.

"I've always been impressed with him," Cameron recently said.

Ginn is considered raw as a receiver and there are concerns about a foot injury in January's national championship game.

How the hell is Chambers going to tutor someone? He still needs polish himself in being a fully fleshed out receiver.

You and all Dolphin fans have my deepest sympathies.
I dropped the cup I was holding when they announced Ginn's name. I don't get it. There are needs on this team that a glorified punt returner won't address.

2 years a go the Packers took Aaron Rodgers. And so far (and yes I know that he's backing up Brett Farve and thus not a lot of chances to prove himself) has looked horrid in game action. Supposiedly a few weeks ago the talk was Rodgers to Oakland for Moss. But now with Russell that may effect that potential move. If Quinn falls to 16 I'd say think about it, and if you go ahead, make a move for Moss.

Marshawn Lynch is who the Packers are eyeing right now. I got a feeling he's going to buffalo here though.

That's an absolutely genius move by Cleveland. Only having to give up their second and next year's first? Wow. Nobody could've imagined a team being able to land Quinn AND Thomas.

Yeah, but now by gambling they got the #1 lineman (who wouldn've been gone for sure!), and got the #2 quarterback overall.

Whatever happens the rest of the draft, the Browns look to have made the best decisions this year!

Only if you look at the low quality of their receiving core.

Look at their entire team and they have much more pressing needs, like most of an offensive line.

How much stock are you going to place into a guy's actions in some wild ass fight where practically everyone was out of control?
As far as the shooting, he returned fire, with a gun that he had a permit for, after some clown shot his teammate. Maybe you'd prefer it if he had simply asked the shooter to hand over his gun and make a citizen's arrest.

Jarret is too slow for what the Chargers are looking for - even Keyshaun mentioned how there is a fear about some of the USC WR's being "system" guys. Jarret does not have the big play potential of Davis, nor the PR ability.

Greg Olsen is a good pick - there is about where he should of came off the board. I feel is he is still a bit overhyped by the media, given his worthlessness as a blocker.

I know Jarret is slower for a WR, but he makes unbelievable catches, and he has played in alot of "bigtime" games.

Personally, I would have taken Jarret.

Good Character is the new number one thing Goodell and others are looking for. I'm glad its finally coming back to the forefront of everyone's attention.

And I think in light of the Virginia Tech situation (and I am in NO WAY comparing ANYONE to Cho Seung-Hui!!), character is as big of an issue now as ever, and with the shape of teams like the Bengals last year, we're seeing teams take these actions under more careful consideration.

I didn't say don't hold him accountable. I asked how much stock should be put into it? The whole thing was an entire cluster**** of a situation where things quickly spiraled out of control. It makes sense to look at the picture in whole before condemning his character. He did wrong. He was justly suspended and hasn't had any problems since.

So far we've (Tampa Bay) realized that "games are won in the trenches". So what do we do? Bolster our sagging pass rush with the best rusher in the draft (Adams) and add a big, versatile SEC lineman in Sears.

Won't make anyone's highlights or any Talking Head's Best Draft Grades list, but this has been a nice, solid draft to this point.

I agree with the emphasis on good character, but looking at a guy while kinda highstepping into the end zone and sarcastically handing the DB the ball after a big catch don't really register with me as red flags for someone being out of control.
