But it is in a class by itself.

And before the onset of the past 10 years with Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2, sequels weren't usually regarded as good even arguably with the originals.

Around the 80's, Godfather 2, Empire Strikes Back, Superman 2, Terminator 2, Aliens, Star Trek 2.

Nowadays, you seem to have more sequels that can compare to the originals, X-2, Two Towers, Spider-Man 2 and even when they can't they surpass the originals in gross (i.e. DMC).
