Hayden Panettiere, the star of the popular TV show ” Heroes “, is now wanted by the Japanese police, after about 3 weeks ago, she and her friends tried to save the dolphins from being massacred by the Japanese fishermen in Taiji, Wakayama.
Apparently, Hayden paddled out on a surfboard, with five other surfers from Australia and the United States, in an attempt to reach a pod of dolphins to stop them being driven into a nearby cove and killed, but they were intercepted by a bunch of Japanese fishermen in a fishing boat before they could reach the dolphins.
According to the witnesses, the confrontation between Hayden’s group and the Japanese lasted about 10 minutes, before Hayden’s group were forced to return to the beach, and then they drove directly to the Osaka Airport and left the country.
When asked about the arrest warrant from Japan, Hayden responded by criticizing the sunrise nation by saying that : ” We must unite as a world to solve our increasing international environmental crises, We can no longer hide [behind] out-dated, senseless cultural traditions and lazy, bad habits that are resulting in the annihilation of our planet’s resources and the extinction of our species. ”
In November 2007, Hayden was awarded the “Compassion in Action Award” from the animal rights group PETA for her efforts to stop the dolphin slaughter in Japan.
I'm no PETA nut, but I say: Good for her.

I am no fan of PETA (usually they are animal harming nutjobs themselves), but this is sooooooooooo Stupid. The slaughter is horrible in itself about a million ways, and this publicity stunt by Japanese authorities is only going to bring unwanted attention to the senseless deaths of a world loved marine animal.
Bring it on Japan, make yourselves look as stupid as Saudi Arabian authorities for sentencing a rape victim to be beat for allowing herself to be raped.

Normally I support hunting, especially if its to control populations, or if it has a longstanding cultural tie such as fox hunting or Native American whale hunts, provided that these species are not endangered.
Fact is, these animals have a good chance of being killed or hunted by their natural enemies, so as part of the ecosystem, humans are also their natural enemies at times, and when a culture has been consuming the dolphins for centuries, what right do we have to criticize? Because they are of higher intelligence? People in Africa consume monkeys (which is gross to me), but we shouldn't judge.
At least these animals are being killed quickly and humanely, and their flesh is being put to good use. If I were to pick some animal killing to protest, it would be the farms where livestock is being tortured, like veal.

How do you know?
You DO realize that dolphins are the ocean's most widely acknowledged "humanitarians", actually saving people from shark attacks. They are also very high in intellect, sometimes being debated as 2nd only to humans, just above chimps.
Like I said, I'm no PETA sympathizer, and I love my meat as much as any other normal human being, but I draw the line at dogs and dolphins. Care to see how they are exactly "fished"? http://www.glumbert.com/media/dolphin
These same fishermen profiting from this trade, I can guarantee will profit off "normal" fishing. Japan has the highest demand for dolphin meat over any other country, and even there, the meat is hardly a staple.
Time for change
Though government officials and industry groups adamantly defend dolphin hunting -- calling it an inherent part of Japanese culture -- there are Japanese who insist it's time for change.
"Killing dolphins is simply outdated," said Izumi Ishii, a sunburned 54-year-old fisherman who, after hunting dolphins for decades, finally called it quits in 1996 and became a leading campaigner for the protection of dolphins.
Ishii acknowledged that dolphins were once an important source of protein in resource-poor Japan, but contends that that is no longer the case. "There are so many other things to eat nowadays."
Ishii said he loved dolphins even as a toddler, but as the son of a dolphin hunter it was a natural choice, at first, to engage in the trade himself.
The yearly slaughter, however, finally became unbearable to him. The dolphins, blood spurting from their throats, took as long as six minutes to die. "They cry," he said. "They thrash about with their eyes wide open."
The Chairman

Indeed. Susan Sarandon was the second, followed by Seth Myers from SNL.

next time check facts, I do know they prolong the killings because it makes the meat taste better when they actually kill the dolphins
and btw I did read a interesting item about a race of dolphins now extinct due to humans. We keep it up and alot more will die off thanks to over fishing and hunting.

...and their flesh is being put to good use. If I were to pick some animal killing to protest, it would be the farms where livestock is being tortured, like veal.
Livestock is a staple of human life. Dolphin meat, even in Japan, isn't. That's why, even though I don't care for it, I can't say anything about the dog meat trade in China.
There is a rare segment of humans that crave human flesh. What do we say? At least the dead dude's meat was put to good use? Although you might say that "humans != dolphins", I can tell you that I have a hell of a lot more respect for those creatures than for most humans.

You DO realize that dolphins are the ocean's most widely acknowledged "humanitarians", actually saving people from shark attacks. You DO realize that's been documented like 2 or 3 times in all of human history?
I believe that those fishermen have the RIGHT to do as the traditions and lifestyle of THEIR country dictate and that all of the wonderfully enlightened foriegners to their shores need to mind their own business.
Ya want to know the truth? By needlessly typing on a silly message board and all of us running our computers and raising the demand for coal-fired electricity... WE are RIGHT NOW doing more damage to the ecosystem than those simple fishermen EVER will.
And how did Hayden get to Japan and back? Not flying anywhere and riding a bike would have helped the ecosystem more than slandering other people's cultures.

Dude. I ain't no tree-hugger. I love guns and fast cars that spew all kinds of lovely crap in the air. I am PISSED that my state is considering California-like emissions laws. I have even hunted before.
I just don't like that these "fishermen" (dolphins aren't fish!) are hacking up beings that are probably smarter than they are, in the name of an outdated culture that doesn't even really need their services to survive.
Hell, I can even tolerate a human hunting one dolphin for sport, but what they are doing is mass slaughter. They kill an average of about 20,000 dolphins every year! For what? A delicacy? For the next person to say: "I have eaten dolphin meat."
Like I said, if they simply resort to "real" fishing, since they already have the resources for it, they stand to profit more, as fish is more of a staple in Japan than dolphin meat ever will.
And about this "centuries old tradition" angle: I am SURE they had all these powerful and fast boats they have now that can run down dolphins back then, no?
VICTORVONDOOMX
11-22-2007, 12:15 AM
So now, according to you, their entire culture is outdated and they are less intelligent than dolphins? Well, silly me... you are just the fellow to pass judgement on them.
carrrnuttt
11-22-2007, 12:28 AM
you are just the fellow to pass judgement on them.
No, I'm not. But the Japanese former "fisherman" that got interviewed in my earlier quote certainly is. What? You don't think all Japanese are for this, are you?
Wait. You're judging too, just in the opposite direction. Care to explain how YOU are an authority in this?
BTW, the American culture allowed slaves only less than 150 years ago. I shouldn't judge though, should I? :whatever:

I agree with Hayden, the truth is humans EAT everthing!...really, there are millions of species that live in our ocean, some that are very important to the marine ecosystem, that are being killed off. What people don't understand is that some of the species being massacred like this are dying at such a rapid rate and since they are so important to their ecosystems a lot of things get messed up as well.
Sometimes it is important to sacrifice the things we like the most.
Now, don't get me wrong, I understand the economic situation of Japanese fisherman but 2 wrongs dont make a right. fishing for dolphins may seem like a good idea at first but at the end it may be a regression rather than a step forward for people.
Btw heres a video of the Dolphin Massacre going on in Japan.(dont watch if you're squeamish)

I also agree with Hayden. Just because Japanese fishermen had killed dolphins (and even humpbacks) doesn't mean they should be allowed to do so. And dolphins are intelligent marine mammals that should be protected, and not fished for food. I also don't like killing sharks for their fins just because Chinese people think the fins have some mystic property that helps you when you consume it, either. Anyway, I think the Japanese government should rein their fishermen in.

OK this post is both offensive and inappropriate. Are you a vegetarian? Cause by your argument and most of the arguments here, the only valid defense is not eating any meat. The fact is that the dolphins have been consumed in Japan for hundreds of years. By telling the Japanese to go by YOUR cultural standards because you feel that they are superior is not only ludicrous, but its cultural imposition, oppression, and borderline racist.
The dolphins they hunt are rare, but by no means endangered, and they are following national and international laws and agreements. Japan has banned hunting of endangered species. If someone has an issue with that, then they should bring it up to the UN or something, because thee fishermen are following the law.
Just because they are intelligent species or rarely eaten species does not mean they shouldn't be hunted or consumed. By many studies, the octopus may very well be considered one of the smartest species out there, possibly right up there with the dolphin. Does that mean we should ban it?
Dolphins are not humans, they are animals. Unless you make a blanket statement saying you think that eating any animals is wrong, it is downright hypocritical to single out dolphins as the species people shouldn't consume.
The dolphins, by Japanese law, ARE supposed to be killed in a humane fashion. You can't make that argument for some of the livestock in the U.S., yet I'll bet that most, if not all of us eat meat. And the reason livestock is livestock is because it is more popular. With that argument, then the U.S. should ban all meats that aren't cattle, poultry, or pork.
I personally would never eat dolphin meat, but its just not right to say our society is correct, and theirs isn't, so they should therefore ban killing dolphins. The overwhelming majority of Japanese do eat dolphin meat. Its served in public school lunch rooms. I think its very arrogant of us to tell them that they need to stop it.

Every Life Is Valuable From Humans To Dolphins To Cockroaches And AS Such Hunting Is Wrong All Meat Should Be Farmed And Now On The *****y And Irrational Side There's Plenty Of Fisherman Out There And Not Enough Dolphins So Let The Fisherman Die For All I Care
so how do you survive? If everything is as valuable as you say... plants, and other life are also valuable. But I'm sure you use electricity, and eat. So much for you.
in the end, its a matter of supply and demand. Remember the Mexican Tuna fiasco around 2000? The US tried to outlaw Mexican Tuna, because they were catching dolphins by accident. The law came down on the US, through the WTO and NAFTA, basically boiling down to this: the US cannot force other countries to live up to their standards (especially those countries/industries that are less developed than those in the States). It was a gross violation of extra territoriality.
However, the problem was solved, because over time, the drop in demand for Mexican Tuna, forced mexican fisherman to adapt and create a cleaner form of fishing. Suppliers had to adapt, in order to maintain demand on their product.
Moreover, these adaptation by mexican fishermen was not a cheap matter. It takes a large amount of relative investment in order to adapt ones technology. Fishing is not the most lucrative of industries, and generating enough profit, in order to re invest in cleaner forms of fishing is difficult.
One could say, that legislation could fix the issue... but at what cost? Yes, Japan could lay down a law about Dolphins and fishing. But how many fishermen would those laws put out of business? And if the government does put these poor fishermen who can't adapt to the new rules of fishing, who's going to look after them, after their livelyhood is limited by such laws? The government obviously.
It's a far more complicated matter than Dolphins being killed, just because they are being killed. I'm sure these fishermen don't want to catch the dolphins either. For them, it just ends up being a waste of time (through either the weeding of the dolphins out of the catch safely, or by killing them). It's a waste of time for the fishermen.
But what it comes down to, is that the cost of catching the dolphins > the cost of adapting physical plant capital. So put basically, if killing dolphins is so bad, then someone should supply cheaper, dolphin safe fishing nets.
PETA: there's your answer. Stopping screwing around with idiotic protest and do something about it. Mass produce dolphin safe nets, through american scale economies... and provide those fishermen who don't have the capital to adapt their techniques, with the technology and equipement needed to clean up their production/extraction of fish.
or you can bet as a species we will not survive.
I doubt we will the way we treat the planet

Yes. That's a good argument. If aliens come by, they can eat me. And eating dolphins will destroy our species, even though other animals consume other animals, including dolphins (sharks eat them, and they've been around for millions of years). But for humans, that isn't the case.

Not the 'next Britney'
Teen actress Hayden Panettiere says no scandal, thanks -- she'll just be 'one of those boring girls'
November 27, 2007
BY BILL ZWECKER Sun-Times Columnist
No question, "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere is one of the "it" girls these days. She's been the darling of the talk show circuit (before the writers' strike) and is gracing a number of magazine covers, including the new GQ in which she promises never to provide fodder for the paparazzi due to out-of-control behavior.
Panettiere, 18, pledges not to fall victim to addictions that would lead to rehab stints like those that Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan have experienced.

"I think I'm going to be one of those boring girls," the young actress is quoted as saying to GQ.
• uA source who works with Panettiere's management team confided to this column that though warned about being so blunt with GQ ("We were worried she was saying something that would come back to haunt her"), the star insisted there was "a method to her madness."
Panettiere reportedly has been saying she plans to frame several copies of the GQ story "and keep [the quotes] where I can see them every day. ... like my dressing rooms or bedroom."
According to Panettiere it will be her way to remind herself "to avoid becoming the next Britney."

I shan't say!

I shan't say!
In due time, my friend...in due time.
Fair enough...:ninja:
Laws allow us to cut down massive amounts of rainforest, dooming our grandchildren to slow and painful suffocation... or at least, our grandchildren's lower class peers. I'm not sure "It's the law" is an arguement when it comes to the longevity of our planet's ecosystem.
(Neither is "Sharks it dolphins, so we can kill as many additional dolphins as is convenient.")
Which is why Hayden felt secure in breaking the laws in order to bring attention to it. Any further move by the Japanese brings more attention to the issue, which is what Hayden wants, and on that side, what she did is extremely smart.
But, that said, the nations and corporations of our planet are not prepared to sacrifice the things necessary to ensure our planet's longevity... which leaves mavericks like Hayden one of the few avenues of actually enacting change. As long as the main goal is saving money, the easiest answer will always be: Just kill the dolphins. Regardless of what good the action will or will not do.

No, disrupting someone's ability to earn their living is significantly worse than being jabbed with an oar. In a sensible world, there's not really even any comparison.
Being a drug dealer is also "earning a living". :whatever:
What they do is neither a necessity for the people of Japan, or for the "fishermen", who are all well-capable of regular fishing. As a matter of fact, it's been proven time and again that dolphin meat is causing a slow mercury poisoning of Japanese schoolchildren.
Whale hunting, ALSO a "tradition", was eventually outlawed in Japan, and they "survived". I am sure they can survive without dolphin meat. Then again, they are still hunting whales in international waters under the guise of "scientific research".
Speaking of tradition, they did not have powerful boats that are capable of running down dolphins not even 50 years ago. I'm ok with them continuing "tradition", if they go back to how they hunted dolphins a hundred years ago.
Oh, and the "poor" people of Taiji are about to build a 3-million-dollar dolphin-processing-plant. They sure are "hurting", aren't they?
To everyone else, I found this vid of that day: http://video.accesshollywood.com/player/?id=177410
^ The part where she cried is right after she got paddled by the "fishermen", and after watching the dolphins she was trying to protect die anyway.

I think that people are forgetting that dolphin hunting is LEGAL. The point is that this issue should be taken to the government, not the fishermen.
The Japanese government is a democracy, however, and they represent the opinions of the people. The majority of the people in Japan don't have an issue with hunting dolphins.
To take a social darwinistic stance and impose our beliefs on an entire, fully progressed population is both hypocritical and more immoral than killing dolphins (controlled endangered whale hunts to preserve Native American traditions are legal in the U.S., for example). Some people think that their opinions are the only valid ones, when in fact the Japanese have theirs, and we have to respect it, just as we'd ask for ours to be respected.
Television, especially those barely-a-notch-up from tabloid sensationalist crapshows like ET and Access Hollywood are eating this up, and people are buying it.
I wouldn't eat a dolphin, either, but the fact is that the best way to get the Japanese to change is through education and encouragement, not confrontation from foreigners... who the heck would respond to that? It's a slower process, but the transition is easier. Creating viable alternatives (importing beef is not one of them) would also help.

BAHAHAHA. :woot:
The person espousing a thinking man's approach to this situation, as opposed to the one giving up at "it's tradition" is the one that's having a hard time thinking now?
Rich. Very rich. And entertaining.
How about I just enumerate this for you, since I'm such a "simpleton":
If they have 3 million dollars to invest in a plant for processing dolphins, they have 3 million dollars to invest in fisheries, and/or more conventional fishing equipment. No matter which way you slice it (pun not intended), conventional fishing is inherently more profitable than dolphin fishing ever will. This leads me to the point that completely blew over your head, o ye "thinker":
Hampering these narrow-minded, one-tracked people (Remind you of anybody? Go look in the mirror.) from catching dolphins, in no way "hampers them from earning a living", just as stopping a drug dealer does not keep him from making a living either. There's a further similarity, in that [Japanese] schoolchildren won't get slowly poisoned by an unnatural foreign substance any longer. In dolphin meat's case, it's mercury.
You and neemer5 act like this us against the Japanese people. It's not. Did you guys not read the former dolphin "fisherman" who is now openly trying to stop the massacres? It's mostly this town that has known no other trade other than dolphin meat (here's where narrow minded comes in), and the government that is stubborn about "tradition".
Funny thing about "tradition" is that "traditionally", the dolphin "fishermen" of Japan have never had the fast boats that now gives them the ability to round-up and slaughter dolphins by the thousands in one session. If it's really about tradition, do it traditionally, and keep the balance that has been kept on the islands for centuries, and which modern technology now has upset. Same thing happened with whale hunters, once they found mechanical ships with high-powered harpoons. And look what happened. Whales all of a sudden became an endangered species."THINK" about that.
Then again, you probably won't.

The person espousing a thinking man's approach to this situation, as opposed to the one giving up at "it's tradition" is the one that's having a hard time thinking now?
Rich. Very rich. And entertaining.
How about I just enumerate this for you, since I'm such a "simpleton":
I believe that those fishermen have the RIGHT to do as the traditions and lifestyle of THEIR country dictate and that all of the wonderfully enlightened foriegners to their shores need to mind their own business.
I agree with you; your attitude and your understanding do, in fact, scream simpleton.
As demonstrated above, I never merely said "It's a tradition" and threw up my hands. That is the argument you wanted to get out of that because you could grasp it. What I was saying there was that it's none of our business.
If you want to change Japanese law and tradition, go be a citizen.
I would be offended by some smarmy know-it-all like you dictating from a foriegn country what to do in America. I won't dissect your childish statements point by point because this little disagreement has gone on long enough. Suffice to say that your lack of respect for other peoples and cultures, much less soveriegnty, is as glaring as your lack of ability to grasp financial nuance.
