Thank God for the invention of the R-rated trailer. The original trailer didnt really impress me much, but this one blew my mind. RDJ is hilarious.

Robert Downey Jr is fearless . I am glad to see him do a comedy he is so naturally funny anyways .I will seeing this opening day.

Tropic Thunder to Feature Fake Movie Trailers
http://i26.tinypic.com/15fha93.jpg

An exhibitor who has seen a small portion of Tropic Thunder reveals that the new Ben Stiller film will actually feature three fake movie trailer (ala Grindhouse). The one he had the chance to see, called Satan’s Alley, opened with the Fox Searchlight logo and featured Robert Downey Jr. and Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire. Apparently the other two trailer will also have non Paramount logos, which is kinda interesting since the film was produced by DreamWorks/Paramount.

During the Tropic Thunder theatrical trailer, Ben Stiller’s character Speedman is seen holding two huge guns (seen above) while delivering the line “Who Left The Fridge Open”, likely part of one of the other trailers. It’s unclear if any of these movie trailers will play before the Dreamworks/Paramount logo opens the film, although that would be awesome if it did.

Anyone read the GQ interview with Downey? He talks about one scene between his and Stillers character:lmao::
Stiller plays action-film star Tugg Speedman, who has just bombed in a period drama as Simple Jack, a retarded man living in the 1920s. Still aching from the critical drubbing he received for making the worst movie ever, Speedman brings up the subject with Downey’s Lazarus, who knows a thing or two about the movie business but will only respond in the voice of a combat-hardened African-American sergeant.

“Oh yeah, you really swung for the fences on that. You went all out,” Downey says, his voice dropping and this full-bodied, scratchy baritone burbling out.
“So Ben’s character says to me,” Downey continues, now mimicking Stiller’s slightly higher-pitched, softer tone, “ ‘When I was playing Jack, I almost had to learn what it was like to not be retarded, because I became so retarded. I had to eat retarded, sleep retarded.’ ”

“Yeah! For a minute, it’s like you was the dumbest mother****er ever lived.”

“Thanks,” Stiller’s character says.

“Hats off for goin’ there. Specially knowin’ how the Academy is about that ****.”

Now impish again, he lets his shoulders drop, jaw sag, imitating Stiller. “The what?”

“Well, everyone knows you don’t go full retard. Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man. Look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. He can count eight decks of cards. Slow, yes. Retarded, no.

Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump. Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Got them braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants offa Nixon and won a Ping-Pong competition. Can’t win ****in’ Ping-Pong being retarded. Then we got the master, Peter Sellers in Being There. Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. Only reason I Tivoed/watched the Awards was to see the Viral Video. Mike Myers should retire from comedy. Liked the reference to RDJ's dark past, didn't think that would be brought up.

But it was pretty much synergy in the sketch. Iron Man, King Fu Panda and Tropic Thunder are from either from Paramount Pictures or Dreamworks and it aired on MTV. All three are owned by Viacom.

I recorded the entire MTV awards just for the Tropic Thunder bit.

It was hilarious - particularly the about the 'suitcase of blow and a hooker in Las Vegas' line. Stiller just has the whole 'advertise movies at awards ceremonies using funny sketches' thing down doesnt he? Remember the Mission Impossible II one he did?

Btw, anyone else see the resemblance between the 'bat-boy' on the cover of that newspaper and the aliens in 'Galaxy Quest'?

Before the start of a recent press screening for Ben Stiller's forthcoming action comedy "Tropic Thunder," a fake, over-the-top commercial for a fictitious energy drink called Booty Sweat appears, provoking great hilarity from the industry crowd in attendance.
Riffing on Hollywood's often ham-handed product-placement deals, Booty Sweat also appears sporadically throughout "Tropic Thunder," which tells the story of an out-of-control, over-budget action movie of the same name that's shut down by a cost-conscious studio chief. In order to finish his epic, the auteur director takes his churlish and unmanageable cast of fake soldiers into an actual war zone without their knowledge.

Now, in an unusual move for a movie studio, Paramount Pictures (maker of the actual "Tropic Thunder") is licensing the fictional brand as a real beverage available nationwide to help promote "Tropic Thunder" in advance of its Aug. 15 wide release.

Brand could have legs
"Not to my knowledge has this ever been done before," said Michael Corcoran, president of consumer products at Paramount Pictures. "We're very excited, because it has the potential to live for quite a while, well beyond the film."

Paramount licensed the energy drink to novelty-products firm Boston America Corp., which will debut Booty Sweat at retailers including Hot Topic, Hastings, Wherehouse and Coconuts, as well as Amazon.com and college bookstores across the nation. Mr. Corcoran declined to say how much the deal was worth to Paramount, but did note that "several hundred thousand" cases of Booty Sweat had been produced.

The idea to make Booty Sweat, the beverage, a reality occurred to Paramount executives last February, after they wandered into Boston America's booth at the Magic Marketplace, the nation's largest apparel and accessory trade event, held annually in Las Vegas.

Two versions available
The can's label will be customized for "urban" and "rural" markets. Metropolitan stores will carry the description of the concoction as a "delicious and bump up struttin' energy drink that will pump up a brotha's ass right-pronto. This swill will crank yo' metabolism up skippin' right over jiggy to straight G-pimp level, word to your mutha. Brothas will be layin' down the 2-3 on the wiggy jig focusing the energy flow into cold-face benjamins that will fill yo' pimp pockets to burstin'. Damn straight! Booty Sweat will keep a brotha pitchin' straight game all night to the baby-dolls."

Rural stores will get a can that simply has the Booty Sweat moniker, but no street slang.

(Contrary to its moniker, though, Booty Sweat has a taste that's more effervescent cherry than Perrier of the derriere, at least according to Paramount director of licensing Tammy Stockfish, who tasted a can for herself last week.)

A handful of other films have licensed formerly fictional products, but until now such deals came long after the picture left theaters.

For example, last December, a futuristic energy drink called Brawndo: The Thirst Mutilator appeared in convenience stores on the East and West coasts. Savvy consumers of pop culture immediately recognized it as the key plot device from "Idiocracy," Mike Judge's sci-fi comedy about an ordinary man (Luke Wilson) who takes part in a cryogenics experiment; when he awakens 500 years in the future, his ordinary intellect makes him the world's smartest man in a nation of dumbed-down nitwits. (Mr. Wilson's character ultimately saves the world from starvation when he suggests not feeding crops Brawndo, but actual water.)

Brawndo believers
Fox had abandoned "Idiocracy" to only a handful of theaters after a dispute with Mr. Judge over its dark tone and dystopic view of the future, but an Oakland, Calif., entrepreneur named Pete Hottelet wouldn't let the product die. Mr. Hottelet and his wife, Wendy, contacted Fox about licensing Brawndo as an actual energy drink. "It took them several months to call me back, and several months more to do the deal," Mr. Hottelet said. He later said he paid Fox "probably a lot more than I should have" to license the drink. "But you only live once." So far, Mr. Hottelet said he has sold some 10,000 cases of the elixir by partnering with Redux Beverages, which also makes the controversial Cocaine energy drink.

Mr. Hottelet's lessons in dealing with Fox lead him to make a better deal with Paramount recently for Sex Panther, a faux cologne featured in 2006's Paramount/Dreamworks' Will Ferrell comedy "Anchorman." In that comedy, Mr. Ferrell refers to the fragrance as "150% More Awesome Than Any Cologne. Ever."

Now, Sex Panther will find release nationwide this September, in a partnership between Mr. Hottelet and Illinois-based Romane Fragrances.

More than a novelty
"If you make a high-quality product that people would buy on its own merits," said Mr. Hottelet, "then having it attached to a major film property gives you an advantage over other products in the marketplace, or even a new brand launched with no big idea behind it. I feel very strongly that Brawndo can replace Red Bull, because it's a good product. No one's going to say, 'It tastes like crap, but it's funny so I'll drink it.'"

Added Mr. Hottelet, "The same thing goes for fragrances: Sex Panther is designed to compete with Drakkar Noir or a CK One. It doesn't smell like the inside of a taxi cab."

That would make tons of money for Fox.

And I am so trying Sex Panther when it's released. ;)

As I go to work everyday I pass through downtown Los Angeles and on the side of this building I see the advertisement for Tropic Thunder being done in oil painting.

One day I drive by and notice that Robert Downey's face on the mural had already been completed but then I noticed days later his face was whited out I'm assuming to make corrections on the face I'm thinking.

The next day I see that the painters made RDJ's dark skin more lighter, when are people going to stop being offended by some skin color?

The idea for Tropic Thunder came to Stiller years ago while making his major film debut in Spielberg’s 1987 WWII drama Empire of the Sun: “It seemed like all my friends – almost every actor in Hollywood but me, in fact – were going off and doing these Vietnam War films. They would go to these fake boot camps for a few weeks to prepare, and then come out talking about how grueling and intense it was, how they all bonded like a real Army platoon. I just found something hilarious about these self-involved actors seeing themselves as heroes.”

Its weird I remember watching Empire Of The Sun a couple years ago having not seen it for a few years and noticing Ben Stiller hasn't aged since 1987!

He looks younger than Christen Bale thses days and Bale was 13 when in empire of The Sun.

'What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?'

hehe.

'It has to be... THREE times this big!'

Classic.

The line in the Rain of Madness trailer: "Suck up and deal. Cock gun, say it, don't do it. Maggots. High-five... do it, don't say it. Over and out."

Awesome movie. The original intro for Comic Con was fantastic. Stiller, Downey Jr., and Black arguing over who the biggest fanboy is.

The surprises and cameos in the movie are hilarious.

"Although nowhere near as sustained or inflected, Cruise's extended cameo as a Hollywood Satan is the other highlight. Looking uglier than one could ever have imagined possible, Cruise has been transformed into a bald-pated, hirsute, porcine, sulfur-mouthed terrorizer who rules the roost from a high-tech bunker. At any greater length, the characterization would have to be deepened or it would become tiresome, but Cruise gives it an unexpected spin that makes this a wonderful match with his ferocious supporting turn in "Magnolia."

At Comic Con, I actually got a chance tp see a screening of Tropic Thunder, and it was hilarious. I was one of those people who wasn’t completely aboard this film, having been burnt from Ben Stiller countless times over the past few years. The Red band trailer got me very excited, but some of the other marketing made me wonder if all the funny bits were contained in the restricted clip. Not the case at all. The film is a great popcorn movie that everyone is going to love. The way the characters are introduced at the beginning of the film is genius, and Tom Cruise gives a career saving performance that EVERYONE will be talking about.

This is one of those RARE movies I actually go out of my way to search the web for new spoof clips of the movie. LOVED the MTV clip. I want more!

I think most people that followed the film knew he was in it. I think I remember the others.

Every year, there are one or two comedic movies that could be surprise hits.

This one and Pineapple Express could be those.

And because Nick Nolte is in this movie, could this be his comeback film?

I just saw this last night at a 'sneak peek' showing...

N O S P O I L E R S

It was very funny, but if your epileptic, don't see this movie. It starts off VERY quickly with practically no character developement at all, and once it gets going, it's gone. It seemed too overwhelming.. like just too much stuff going on at once, you could barely hear the dialogue at some points(especially Downey Jr's), and there some scenes where you'll just be completely bewildered as to what just happened.

Anyways, it took me 3/4's of the movie before I realized that this guy was Tom Cruise, he did an excellent job playing a jewish? douche bag who only cares about money. And Lord are his arms fat hairy logs... good lord. :hehe:

Everything I said is 100% true. Many of you will agree with me on what I said above, I'm pretty sure. Like I said, THIS MOVIE IS VERY FAST PACED.

7/10

I saw the movie last night at a free screening and here's my short but oh so sweet spoiler free review:

It's an good movie...not a great movie. It's an unfocused and fast paced movie with rapid fire laughs. There are a lot of really really good laughs throughout the movie, though some parts and plot points are kinda lame. If it weren't for Robert Downey Jr., the movie would almost be worthless. Tom Cruise's cameo is epic and awesome. It's nice to finally see the guy not take himself so damn seriously. There are some other great cameos from other stars in there as well. I'm not sure if I'll be buying it, I need to see it again to judge that.

All in all I was hoping for it to be better, but it was still a blast...and Tom Cruise has one of the best lines I've ever heard in this movie:

"Really? How about you take a step backwards...and literally F#CK YOURSELF IN THE FACE!!!"

This movie gets a solid 74% from yours truly.
