Man this film was so hilarious. I got to see a Advance Screening at Comic Con. It as great film all around. Funniest of the year
Luckyyy! I wanted to go to Comic Con, but alas, not for me this year. I'm going to see TT though tomorrow night at an advanced screening, so I'm pretty psyched about that.
I just love what I've seen of the humor in this movie so far... it's got the stupid edge of Zoolander, but so much of it is based on what's there in reality... I mean, it's over the top, but we know these actors... we've seen them in every day life, in some form or other. The action guy, the method actor, the comedian... it's just so accurate. I'm soooo ready to see this.

I posted a message on that blog, and since is awaiting moderation, and may not be approved, I'll put a copy here
You people really missed the point of the movie… Stiller’s character is making fun of the way Hollywood actors use these kind of roles to seem deep, and gain quick notoriety as serious actors… It’s not that hard to understand… It’s actually quite positive, since exposes the insensibility that came before…
And you complain about a word? Without judging the context in wich is used? I can’t believe you don’t have better things to worry about…

Let the in-game advertising commence! Ubisoft (aka the EA of Europe) has signed a deal (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19698) with Paramount Pictures to infuse the 360 version of Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 gameplay-reliant advertising that will take the shape of an in-game scavenger hunt promoting upcoming movie Tropic Thunder.
Players will follow a series of clues within the game in order to receive a "free digital VIP map" for the title and gain entry into a Tropic Thunder sweepstakes for the chance to win an Xbox 360 Elite ... and ... for the love of ...
Most in-game advertisments are fairly passive, but this represents a new age of playable commercials, which brings things right back to the days of Cool Spot. I'm sure this is going to be very nice for Ben Stiller fans, but the whole idea of this scheme makes me cringe, quite frankly. I'm not surprised in the least that Ubisoft is involved.

In other news, I managed to get to the advance screening of TT last night, and OMG. It is beyond hilarious! RDJ is amazing, and let me just say that the cameos everyone's raving about... they are completely worth the hype. The story itself is great, and more complex than I was expecting, and there are waaay more jokes and funny bits than I was expecting too. Definitely not one of those movies where all the best bits are in the trailer. There's this whole conversation between Tugg Speedman and Kirk Lazarus near the end that had me practically rolling with laughter. Can't wait to go with my whole group to go see it this weekend!
And the trailers at the beginning -- so, so worth seeing. :word:

And in mentioning Rain Man and Forrest Gump, Downey Jr.’s character points out the fact that Hollywood has always shied away from featuring characters who are truly disabled; always making sure that these characters had some over-the-top ability or redeeming quality. If anything, my husband was glad that fact was brought to light here, because it’s a valid point that Hollywood (and society in general) usually rewards and accepts film characters who are only “somewhat” disabled.
Wow, this stupid lady actually got what the scene was REALLY poking fun at, and yet she still manages to claim that it was merely a ploy to demean the mentally disabled. Wow. :o
My aunt is retarded, but I do not take offense at the scene in question because A) I know that the movie is meant to be in good fun, and B) I know that the joke was not meant to be on retarded people, but the way Hollywood treats them.

Yeah, this bugs me so much. I feel like there are plenty of things in the world, and even just in Hollywood, to feel legitimately outraged by... but this is just like people getting together to complain because it makes them feel better. I hate it when people get up in arms about something they haven't actually seen or experienced -- this movie is NOT offensive the way they think it is. As you say, Timstuff, the joke is on the way the media treats the mentally disabled. Not on the disabled themselves.

And I find it fascinating that these people find the word retard, that is at worst a short form of Mental Retardation (wich I believe is a medical term), insulting, while they find perfectly good the word "disabled", wich implies that someone is not able to do stuff, and we know many people with Down Syndrome are able to work and live on their own...

“’Tropic Thunder’ is an R-rated comedy that satirizes Hollywood and its excesses, and makes its point by featuring inappropriate and over-the top characters in ridiculous situations. The film is in no way meant to disparage or harm the image of individuals with disabilities.”
“We have had productive discussions with representatives of disability advocacy organizations and look forward to working with them closely in the future. However no changes or cuts to the film will be made.”

Mental disability groups protest 'Tropic Thunder'
Aug. 12, 2008, 6:31 AM EST
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- "Tropic Thunder" is pushing the envelope too far for groups representing the mentally disabled.
Dozens of people from organizations such as the Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities protested the movie-industry spoof across the street from the film's Los Angeles premiere at Mann's Bruin Theatre on Monday. The protesters held up signs with slogans such as "Call me by my name, not by my label" and chanted phrases like "Ban the movie, ban the word."
The groups are outraged over scenes featuring the liberal usage of a disparaging term used to describe the mentally disabled. In the movie, director and co-star Ben Stiller (http://movies.msn.com/celebrities/celebrity/ben-stiller/) plays a fame-hungry actor cast in a war movie who previously had a role as a mentally disabled character named Simple Jack. The DreamWorks film, which opens Wednesday, also stars Robert Downey Jr. (http://movies.msn.com/celebs/celeb.aspx?c=372076) and Jack Black (http://movies.msn.com/celebrities/celebrity/jack-black/).
"When I heard about it, I felt really hurt inside," said Special Olympics global messenger Dustin Plunkett. "I cannot believe a writer could write something like that. It's the not the way that we want to be portrayed. We have feelings. We don't like the word retard. We are people. We're just like any other people out there. We want to be ourselves and not be discriminated against."
Andrew J. Imparato, president of the American Association of People with Disabilities, said he and other representatives from advocacy groups representing the mentally disabled met with DreamWorks co-chair Stacey Snider and watched a private screening of the film Monday morning. Imparato called the movie "tasteless" and said it was "offensive start to finish."
"I have a sense of humor," said Imparato. "There were parts of the movie where I laughed, but it seems to me that the movie tried really hard to go too far and then pull back on everything that was offensive except the issue of people with intellectual disabilities. I just think Ben Stiller and the people involved in this movie just didn't think it was going to be offensive."
Following the original complaints from the advocacy groups, DreamWorks pulled some promotional materials, including a Web site that promoted the film-within-a-film starring Stiller's character which contained the tag line "Once there was a retard." DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan previously said in a statement that "no changes or cuts to the film will be made."
"If you want to pick on people, as the old playground saying goes, pick on people your own size," said Timothy Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, who is calling for a boycott of "Tropic Thunder" along with the other groups. "This population struggles too much with the basics to have to struggle against Hollywood. We're sending a message that this hate speech is no longer acceptable."

I actually saw something similar at a Broadway show once. It was Martin Short in a show that spoofed one-man shows, where he made up a bunch of BS about himself to tell his "life story" on stage (it was hilarious).
But at one point they did a mock Oscar ceremony that had him nominated for a movie where he played a mentally challenged man fighting for his pet parrot to ride the bus with him. The 10-second "clip" consisted of Short on stage running in circles around a bird perch yelling "Let Mr. Feathers ride with me! Let Mr. Feathers ride with me!"
Of course it was a total spoof of the whole idea of actors winning awards for playing those kinds of roles--not a spoof of the mentally challenged themselves. And it was really funny.
That's sounds like exactly what they're doing in Tropic Thunder, and it appears the protesters have missed the point entirely.

So true. IMO, the actors who actually try to play mentally retarded characters to win awards are more offensive than Stiller in TT. Its kind of like how actors who wear blackface for a role (whats his name in Soul Man) are more offensive than RDJ.

I work at a movie theater and we had an employee preview last night of Tropic Thunder. Let me say that I really, really enjoyed it and found it to be one of the funniest movies that I've ever seen.
Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise are the showstealers in my opinion. Tom Cruise especially. I know he receives a lot of flack for his beliefs in an alien religion and believe me I don't agree with a lot of his beliefs, views, and find him a bit out there. But this performance made me respect him because he went all out and shows he doesn't take himself that seriously.

I was disapointed with Cruise's characterhim swearing and dancing just wasn't that funny. It was probably the weakest part for me. It was still good but you can only go to the well so many times. Even Bill Hader who was great in a Pineapple Express was left with nothing even with more screen time than he had in Knocked Up.
The cameos in this film were excellent.
RDJ is the Heath Ledger of this movie, when he's not onscreen you're wanting him to come back. Plus he escapes into the role like Ledger. But I'm not saying Oscar nom. I'll say Golden Globe in a Comedy/Musical nom.
Stiller thought of the idea back in the 80s and thankfully he never used it for The Ben Stiller Show. Look for the show's Die Hard 12 trailer parody to get the sense of what the they're going for.
Pineapple Express had more one liners, and laughs but Tropic Thunder is pretty consistent with the laughs, has a couple of twists and leaves a smile on your face throughout. Overall I would say Thunder is the better film, simply because its a movie that I would see again and again. The laughs may not be as hard after multiple viewings but its still entertaining with the action and characters.
Its nice to see something somewhat original in theaters, it takes the rescue mission formula and gives it something fresh. Its the third best movie of the summer after TDK and WALL-E.

The movie is really not offensive at all.

I don't get the controversy either. The use of retard is to critique the actors who played retards to win awards like Oscar; it is not used to make fun of people who have mental disabilities. But I guess they aren't interested to find that out, because they just want free publicity that comes with their protests.

i was really disapointed with this movie
the beginning(very beginning, you know what i mean if you've seen it) was awesome and creative. even the beginning of the "movie" (again if you've seen it you know what i mean), was awesome. then after probably 15/20 min into the movie, it was super boring and not entertaining at all imo. the end was pretty sweet. but overall, i thought this was going too be a lot better.
Action-comedy films are very tricky too make, and rarely work because action films are ussually serious, the opposite of comedy.
I thought Pineapple Express was way better, by a landslide.
once again just my opinion
i give it a 6.5/10

But I guess they aren't interested to find that out, because they just want free publicity that comes with their protests.
They're against any use of the word "retard" and want it removed from the film, comparing it to the "n" word. And that's absolutely not true, "retarded" was once an acceptable definition of the condition, while the other word has never been anything but an ugly slur.
Another forum I read was going ballistic at the subject last night, even though none of them have actually seen the film. Some of them are parents of disabled children and have heard it used in such a negative way that even if they understand the context it's being used in the film they still don't want to hear it at all.
And my advice to them is not to see the movie if it's going to bother them so much. It's an R-rated film. Movies have used plenty of negative words about people, it's not stopping anytime soon, and even if it was taken out it doesn't mean people in every day life are going to stop using it either.
The time would be better spent educating actual people about the ugliness of the word rather than worry about it's use in a movie.
Where were these protests when Borat was released? It used the word in a far more offensive way, but I don't recall any protests.
TheVileOne
08-13-2008, 07:52 PM
Borat didn't really announce it or market it.
The whole Simple Jack thing was part of the movie within a movie thing. And it was one of the fake websites they set up for the movie. So that's where it kind of caught them and got the stupid moron groups in an uproar.

Downey was definitely the best thing in the movie. He has catapulted himself from an actor I don't consider too often, to one of my favorite actors just over the course of ONE summer. saw it last night...it was really funny, but a little hyped, and if you have to see it for one reason...RDJ! This is one of the best performances of the year...A golden globe for best comedic performance might be in order...other than that...it played out like other ben stiller stuff...but i liked the freedom he had here with the humor...simple jack was hilarious...the tobey mcguire cameo was hysterical but the big talk about Tom Cruise wasn't all that great...it was ok and nice to see him doing comedy like this...but I guess he knows how to play a bigtime studio producer better than anyone and thats why insiders in the bizness actually thought it so funny.
7.5/10 ...about the same as Pineapple Express...seemed like these films were gonna be new comedy classics and then just barely delivered...but still very very funny. I'm not sure what was missing I just know something was....like a moment where i needed to catch my breath from laughing so hard...and there wasn't one.

Keep in mind Pineapple Express has been frontloaded due to the huge fanbase of Apatow and Crew while Ben Stiller is more of a household name so this could have stronger legs and thus end up being more successful, we won't know anything till after the first and probably second weekend.
I thought the movie was hilarious, however the movie for me is perhaps somewhere between rental and buy. The reason being is the schitzofrenic nature of the film in that it couldn't decide being improv/skit (Step Brothers) comedy movie or story/comedy (Knocked Up). Like it sets up characters and character arcs, yet it doesn't seem to follow through with them or they are interspliced in awkwardly. Which leads to a film that feels like its dragging even though its funny because the audience is bewilder at what there watching or where it is going. So I'd rate it a 6.5 or 7/10... Tom Cruise was definitely the best part of the movie.

There's nothing really offensive about this movie. I don't think it was trying to be offensive at all.
No, it wasn't offensive at all. The point was that Stiller's character performed a pitifully offensive portrayal of a mentally challenged person and his career suffered because he didn't bring anything right to it. Downey's speech was crass...but it's an R-rated film and the mentally challenged were certainly not the only people called names throughout the film.
I saw the movie tonight...I thought it dragged a little in the middle, but the rest of it was so hilarious that I really enjoyed it.

It was--and the joke was that he did a terrible job. No one in the movie made fun of handicapped people, they were making fun of him and his performance.

I don't think the movie's derogatory towards retarded people at all. Stiller was making a statement on Hollywood actors who try to legitimize themselves by portraying the mentally handicapped. And like the other poster above said, it was a parody of an offensive portrayal.
And Lazarus's speech was 100% accurate, like it or not. It's the freaking truth.
If people are offended it might be because they don't want to admit to their own inner prejudices. They are guilt-tripping over it.

Saw it tonight with a bunch of friends, and I absolutely ****ing loved it! I thought it was a brilliant satire, and the performances were top notched. If Ledger gets shafted by the Academy, I'd totally say give the Award to Downey. What he did could have either been a complete disaster or a work of brilliance, and thankfully it was a latter.
And Cruise was hilarious.

Just got back, I thought it was hilarious. RDJ was amazing as usual. The guy could honestly get some award recognition (Golden Globe). The guy portrayed the crazy method actor to perfection. I think I also heard him use three different voices in the film, all sounded great. RDJ was probably my favorite part, but those Cruise scenes were hilarious, guy really brought it......loved that dance he does :lmao:
I'll definitely be seeing this again.

Wow. that was a ****ing hilarious movie. There is nothing offensive in this to any particular group or person at all unless you're Tom Rothman/Harvey Weinstein/some-sorta studio executive or Russell Crowe.
Otherwise just sheer comedic brilliance and a joy to watch. Ben Stiller for a guy who usually plays affable losers is a very cynical person if you look at the films he writes/directs. Even Zoolander had a mean satirical edge to it. And this, even moreso than Cable Guy, is a full frontal sardonic assault on pop culture and the Hollywood movie industry.
And I loved every minute of it. Downey Jr. was quite frankly immersively funny and believable in his conflicted character-actor send-up. I loved everything from the fake trailers (Tobey Maguire was gold with the "MTV Movie Award Winner for Best Kiss" and I loved the trailer for Scorcher "Can't believe this is happening again, again.") to the end.
But Tom Cruise stole the show. You may hate the man in real life but in this movie he is hysterical. Especially when he curses out and intidimates drug lords on the phone. He is so full-of-it and obnoxious.
My favorite lines:
"You never go full retard...ask Sean Penn from 2001 in I Am Sam and he went home empty handed."
-"Whose the Key Grip? I want you to hit that ******* in the head!"
-"400 years that word has divded and demeaned us..."
-"Well weep in the press."
but most of all
-"Lead farm, mother ****er."
I also loved so many scenes like the end with the boy and the knife and the whole director's head bit. All were great.

Does anyone else think Stiller's line in the Scorcher VI trailer "Here we go again...again" was a last minute dub to make fun of that line from Mummy 3, when Fraser looks at the camera and goes "Here we go again!"
Anyway, fun movie. RDJ stole the show, and Jack Black was funny. I was a little disappointed by Tom Cruise. I thought he would be much more hysterical, but besides the constant swearing, it wasn't anything new. Also, I kind of wished he had used a different voice. It didn't really go with the fat outfit.

Alright, I saw it last night and I can't believe people think this tops Pineapple Express. Sure it was funny at times but PE was funny all around. The beginning with the trailers was cool, than the actual beginning of the movie was boring, the middle was boring, the end was awesome with the big gunfight with RBJ pulling out those guns telling them he runs a lead farm. I thought Tom Cruise's character was Jamie Kennedy the whole time until he revealed himself at the end. The only real thing that made this movie funny was Robert Downey Jr, I laughed whenever he was onscreen, other than that Jack Black's lame ass humour like every other movie and Ben Stiller's desperate attempt to be funny was not entertaining. Overall, this movie was kind of boring with some funny parts and definatley not worth a buy on dvd or a second viewing, I'll save my cash for the second viewing of Pineapple Express if I really want to laugh.

RDJ was in Iron Man and you didn't like it:csad: Jack Black was his usual self but Seth Rogen is the same character in every movie...a funny smart ass.
I just thought this was a great 3-some of actors and they played off of each other perfectly. This was an original movie and it worked IMO...not another stoner comedy. I did not go see Pineapple because nothing in any of the trailers even remotely made me laugh or smile.

I enjoyed this film a great deal. But at the same time I feel like it really did not live up to its full potential. Stiller was just doing his same old bit but now in an army uniform. Some stuff was skewered (the hollywood system etc) well but others themes seemed like it did not go far enough. I also could have lived without the Jack Black character. Overall though, lots of fun. 8 out 10.

I'm not a big fan of Jack Black, but his line after Alpa's revelation about his love back home nearly had me falling out of my chair was I was laughing so much.
I did think the movie dragged a bit in the middle, but as a whole (especially the last 45 minutes) it was just ridiculously funny.

WHAT?????
This movie kicks-ass . It was hilarious . I thought maybe the first ten or fifteen minutes were just ok but once they are in the jungle doing the bit with the director exploding ....it was non-stop clever . I thought Robert Downey Jr. totally owned and did a really good job creating his character. The line " I don't read the script , The script reads me " was perfect for RDJ to say . Jack Black was probably funnier than I have ever seen him . The scene with Black tied to a tree was great and one of the best parts for me . I don't think this movie is offensive in the least bit . Cmon " You never go FULL retard" :woot: , so true . Also the G5 scene had me rolling .

I know it's your opinion, and I ain't a 'Tropic Thunder' fan, yet(because I haven't seen the film). But, I was confused when you said "disappointed", and in your review gave it a 6(or)7/10, which is a pretty reasonable score, if you ask me. And considering this film wasn't nessisarilly marketing itself to be a giant-sized blockbuster, I wouldn't consider a score like that to be "disappointing". A 6/10 score, would be like saying "go see it on a Tuesday night or wait for DVD release". 7/10 would be saying, "check it out if you like the genre".
