Tom Cruise's Cameo in Tropic Thunder?

In an article (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/features/columns/film_reporter/e3i100bdf32d950877fd2568cf0a9fc199f) talking about cameos in movies, The Hollywood Reporter talks about Tom Cruise's possible cameo for the Ben Stiller-directed comedy Tropic Thunder (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=18848) at DreamWorks:

Another reason for the need to keep a star mini-turn hush hush is that it could spoil the surprise and ironic wit. If rumors pan out that Tom Cruise will appear as a despotic studio head in cameo king Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder," Hollywood insiders are likely to view it as an unexpected in-joke at the expense of the top execs at his former home studio, Paramount.

Ironically, Paramount will distribute the film, starring Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black. The July 11, 2008 release is about five actors who go on location and find themselves relying on their boot camp experiences when they get stuck in a real war-like situation.

Cruise and Stiller will also star together in Fox 2000's Hardy Men, the Shawn Levy-directed comedy about the grown-up adventures of the Hardy Boys.

Two days after being hospitalized for an attempted suicide, Owen Wilson has dropped out of the DreamWorks' ensemble comedy Tropic Thunder, reports Variety.

Wilson's frequent collaborator, Ben Stiller, began shooting the film in Hawaii six weeks ago. "Tropic," which also stars Jack Black, is produced by Stiller's Red Hour Films.

Wilson was scheduled to begin a weeklong shoot in two to three weeks. The decision was characterized as a mutual agreement between Stiller and Wilson.

It is unclear whether Wilson's role would be recast or eliminated from the comedy, which revolves around a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie who are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying.

McConaughey Replaces Wilson in Tropic Thunder
Source: Variety September 19, 2007

Matthew McConaughey has joined the ensemble cast of Tropic Thunder, the Ben Stiller-directed DreamWorks comedy.

The job amounts to an uncredited cameo, as McConaughey takes the role that Owen Wilson ankled after he was hospitalized, says Variety.

McConaughey joins a cast that includes Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Nick Nolte, Bill Hader and Steve Coogan.

The film is about a group of actors who gather on a remote island to shoot a big-budget war movie and are forced to become the soldiers they are playing.

Tropic Thunder is shooting in Hawaii and McConaughey will shoot for a week.

Tom Cruise May Play Film Studio Tyrant in 'Tropic Thunder'

I haven't been so nuts about Ben Stiller lately as an actor, but as a director the guy has shoveled out some pretty decent flicks. Reality Bites and The Cable Guy are two classics in my mind, and Zoolander -- eh, it had its moments. For his fourth pic as a director, Stiller will give us Tropic Thunder; a film that has already assembled a pretty wacky cast that includes Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Justin Theroux and Jay Baruchel. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Cruise may be stepping in for a super secret cameo that's just a tad -- shall we say -- ironic. The article in question talks up Hollywood's annoying "cameo code of silence;" how A-list actors will often appear in tiny roles for little to no money (because they're friends with the folks in charge or what have you), but then insist that their contract not allow the studio to market their appearance in any way, shape or form.

It's a catch-22; one one hand, it's awesome to have someone like, say, Tom Cruise in your film. Then again, what good is it if you can't use his appearance to sell tickets? And so it goes. But back to the topic at hand, which is, of course, Cruise's secret Stiller role. Apparently, he'll be playing a "despotic studio head" who, I take it, will be in charge of the big-budgeted war film Stiller and Co. are attempting to shoot in Tropic Thunder -- that is, until these actors playing actors are forced to become the soldiers they're portraying for real. Some are saying this role will give Cruise a chance to poke fun at folks like Sumner Redstone and Paramount who, just last year, canned Cruise because of his wild off-screen antics, saying, essentially, that Cruise was performing "career suicide." (Heh, I wouldn't be surprised if that exact quote is used as a line of dialogue spoken by Cruise's character.) The ironic (or moronic) part? Dreamworks (owned by Paramount) is putting out the film. I love it! Of course, we probably won't know whether Cruise is actually in the film until it screens for an audience (stupid cameo code!), but we'll keep our ears open and let you know what we hear. Currently, Tropic Thunder is scheduled to appear in your local theater on July 11, 2008.

Representatives for Tom Cruise are infuriated pictures of the actor appearing as a fat, balding studio executive in his new movie have been leaked on the internet. The star is currently filming Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder alongside wife Katie Holmes and The Holiday star Jack Black - and is reported to be considering legal action over the shots. In a statement, representatives for Cruise said, "Mr. Cruise's appearance was supposed to be a surprise for his fans worldwide. (Paparazzi) have ruined what should have been a fun discovery for moviegoers." Cruise's co-star Black is equally upset the picture was leaked to the press. He tells MTV news, "I can't believe it got leaked out. Could you tell it was him? He's not going to be very funny in this movie. It was supposed to be a secret, but there it is." Owen Wilson was initially earmarked to appear in the project, but was forced to pull out earlier this year.

Definately spoils the suprise

Article(again spoilers):

First Look: 'Tropic Thunder'
Who's that man between Jack Black and Ben Stiller in this scene from the upcoming comedy? (Hint: he's famous...and white)

TROPIC THUNDER How did an African-American audience react at a screening? ''It seems people really embrace it,'' says Stiller

If you don't recognize that African-American actor standing between Jack Black and Ben Stiller, there's a good reason: He's white. In Tropic Thunder, an epic action comedy co-written and directed by Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam war epic ever filmed. Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, um, authentically. Funny? Sure. Dangerous? That's an understatement. ''If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago,'' Downey says. ''If you don't do it right, we're going to hell.''

The film marks Stiller's first directing effort since 2001's Zoolander. With Thunder (opening Aug. 15), he takes aim at the sweetest target of all: actors. Downey plays one of a team of self-indulgent stars cast in the modern equivalent of Apocalypse Now. Stiller plays an action hero who has just adopted a baby from Asia but worries that ''all the good ones are gone.'' Black portrays a comedian known for performing multiple roles in a single film — his latest is called The Fatties: Fart 2. But when the film's director (Steve Coogan) and writer (Nick Nolte) get fed up with their prima donna cast, they drop them into the jungle to fend for themselves. The actors think they're doing some sort of full-immersion filmmaking, but the danger they're in is very real.

Stiller got the idea for Thunder more than 20 years ago while shooting a small part in Steven Spielberg's WWII drama Empire of the Sun. He's continued to develop the script as his own star has risen, which makes taking on his brethren all the richer — watch for cameos from Tom Cruise and Tobey Maguire — and all the more perilous. For starters, Hollywood satires have a rocky box office record. And then there's that little issue of a white guy playing a black guy. Stiller says that he and Downey always stayed focused on the fact that they were skewering insufferable actors, not African-Americans. ''I was trying to push it as far as you can within reality,'' Stiller explains. ''I had no idea how people would respond to it.'' He recently screened a rough cut for African-Americans, and was relieved at the reaction. ''It seems people really embrace it,'' he says.

Paramount is hoping so: The studio plans to debut the trailer online March 17, and Downey is all over it. (In one scene, he tries to bond with a real African-American castmate by quoting the theme song from The Jeffersons.) Downey, meanwhile, is confident he never crossed the line. ''At the end of the day, it's always about how well you commit to the character,'' he says. ''I dove in with both feet. If I didn't feel it was morally sound, or that it would be easily misinterpreted that I'm just C. Thomas Howell in [Soul Man], I would've stayed home.''

Trailer March 17th....sounds awesome

I love that RDJ is playing a black guy in the film, and Jack Black an Albino

Im sure this was posted but

"And then there’s Tom Cruise. From the leaked photo and knowing what the story was, I thought he was going to be some crazy Kurtz guy up the river who they run into. I also thought it would be more of a cameo. But it’s a full-fledged supporting role, though I would hate to call his character supporting. He dominates the screen when he’s on. I won’t say what capacity he’s in the movie, but this character is right up there with Frank T.J. Mackey as one of Cruise’s nastiest characters. I am never sure what to expect with Cruise, but he pulled off the comedy in this one like you wouldn’t believe. And since I brought up Coogan’s final scene, I have to say that Cruise’s final scene was spot-on perfect. I couldn’t stop laughing. Of course his opening scene was great too. What can I say, I loved him in this. Now that I’ve seen what he can do in a movie like this, I can’t wait to see him and Ben Stiller paired up in The Hardy Men."

Hopefully, if people take the time to examine the context, it won't be an issue. But then again this is "people" that we're talking about, now. A single person, you can trust a person to approach this rationally, whereas people will piss and moan before even seeing the slightest bit of actual footage. The appearance of Downey Jr.'s character in, for all intents and purposes, "blackface", as it's explained in the film, will be meant as a satirical jab and not any kind of endorsement of a form of entertainment that has offended and stereotyped an entire racial group.

Havenīt seen this posted.

Exclusive: Stiller Talks Tropic Thunder
Reporting from the ShoWest frontline (http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=22188)

Last night Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr unveiled the new trailer and two scenes from their upcoming comedy Tropic Thunder – a film Empire is already saving space for on the Best Comedy of the Year podium – at Koi in the Planet Hollywood hotel. We then talked with Stiller about the movie, but more on that in a minute. First, the footage.

The trailer opens like Apocalypse Now, very dramatic and serious, but stops when we cut to Downey Jr holding Stiller's handless arm stumps. It then quickly degenerates into a scene where a bunch of whiny actors (Stiller, Downey Jr, Jack Black, Jay Baruchel and more) are complaining about their work conditions. Their director (Steve Coogan) gets fed up with them and considers dumping them in a war zone, which leads to the cast believing they’re still shooting a film when they are in fact in the midst of a war. It’s a lot funnier than we’re describing it.

They then showed a couple of scenes. The first sees our key players dumped into the jungle for real for the first time. Steve Coogan runs around like Werner Herzog, slapping Jack Black in the face, trying to generate some real emotion and anger. He explains about the hidden cameras, and then…well, it would be too much of a spoiler, but it’ll get a big laugh when you see it.

Second scene takes place after Stiller’s character has been captured and his co-stars are plotting to get him back – only they’ve no idea what they’re doing. Jack Black’s strapped to a tree, begging for heroin, and the others are questioning each other’s sexuality. Both scenes are very fast-paced and funny, although categorically not, as Stiller joked afterward, “A bit like Atonement, right?” Our comic appetite is certainly whetted for seeing the rest of this.

The next day we met up with Stiller, who directs as well as starring, at The Four Seasons for a chat about the film. The first question we had to ask was obviously whether he was in any way worried about what reaction would be to the images of Downey Jr made up as a black man (he plays an actor so into his method that he changes his race rather than re-write the part).

“I don’t mean to be flippant, but not at all,” he says. “When people see the movie – in the context of the film, he’s playing a method actor who’s gone to great lengths to play an African American. The movie is skewering actors and how they take themselves so seriously. Audiences that have seen it so far have totally embraced the character. ”

The idea for the movie is actually one Stiller has had for over two decades. “The idea came 20 years ago when I was doing Empire of the Sun,” he tells us. “I had a small part in that and at that time all my actor friends, myself included, were going on auditions for war movies like Platoon and Hamburger Hill. I met with Oliver Stone myself – I never read, just had a meeting. He said ‘You’re cute” and I knew it was over. Every actor that got a role was coming back saying ‘Man, it was like boot camp; it changed my life.’ I don’t know if it was bitterness because I didn’t get cast, but there seemed a certain amount of irony in them feeling they were having this experience of war when they really weren’t. I thought that could be funny to have the actors caught up in a real situation.”

So what took so long?

“Well, I started working on the script about 10 years ago, had drafts of it over the last 10 years, but it was only about two and a half years ago that we felt we had a draft that was really good. We did a read-through and after that… we still didn’t do anything for a while. We re-wrote some more… you know, it’s been a long process, but it’s been great to have that time to work on something.”

Screening Review in AICN

sounds ****ing awesome

The fake previews lead into the film, and they are fantastic. Each trailer introduced the three main actors, with specific satires of certain genres. Ben Stiller's character plays and action star who has now made at least five sequels to one movie, Jack Black's trailer is the most brilliant satire; a movie about a fat family with all the characters played by Black in heavy prosthetics. The film was called "The Fatties" and the shot at Eddie Murphy's career made everyone in the theatre laugh hysterically. Robert Downey Jr. is the most serious of the actors, his trailer was for a movie called "Satan's Alley", where Downey plays a priest who falls in love with another priest. A great cameo here by Tobey Maguire (the trailer references him as MTV's best kiss award winner). The only other one was a fake commercial, and all i will say about that is "Booty Sweat".

The Fatties?? :lmao:

Now that is just....haha. I don't even know how to respond. I don't think Downey's "blackface" will be too offensive, he's not doing it in a malicious manner. The character is actually likeable.

I already know what this is gonna be like. When it's released people will say it's hysterical, hilarious etc, etc. Because the trailer looked funny and it's already such a hype. Then ofcourse, it turns out it's mediocre at best.
There are countless examples.

I think the trailer was counting of the funny concept of the movie and characters. For those aware of some plot details, we were totally spoiled.

New Review at AICN:
Not sure how legit it is.....

BrightEyes Exalts Tom Cruise In TROPIC THUNDER, And Likes The Rest Of It, Too!!
Merrick here...

BrightEyes sent this in after a screening of TROPIC THUNDER. I'm really looking forward to seeing this. The film recently received a vote of no confidence from my woman, which means it's probably quite good.

If the reviewer here is correct, I hope this rating remains a "hard R"...

Here's BrightEyes...

The movie starts out with maybe the best pre movie
studio logo footage ever. With GrindHouse we got
Machete to start us off, but in this film we get Ben
Stiller's characters movie trailer for Scorcher 6, a
ridiculous action film. We get Jack Blacks meet the
fats(or something like that) which pretty much mocks
eddie Murphy in his Nutty Professor roles, and best of
all there is Robert Downey Jr's trailer which features
Tobey Maguire. It's called "The Devil's Alley" and is
in the vain of Brokeback Mountain. There was also a
advertisement for a fake drink before the trailers
which was pretty funny as well and sets up a character
and joke for later in the film.

After all the fake trailers are finished we are thrown
into the film within the film. Now before seeing the
film I thought for sure it would be a PG-13 film what
with all the big name actors, but after the first
twenty seconds I was proven wrong. This film is
definitely a hard R rated film and thanks to this I
had a huge smile on my face for most of the film.

The concept is quite simple. A bunch of actors are
making a war movie and accidently really get thrown
into a war. I don't want to go into to much of the
story but will talk about aspects of the film. All the
actors shine in this film maybe with the exception of
Steve Coogan who played the director though it might
be cause his role wasn't funny in the first place.

The thing that surprised me the most about the film
was how outrageous the actors got, and I respect the
hell out of that.

Jack Black is at his absolute wildest. Black plays an
drug addicted actor who carrys Heroine with him in a
jelly beans bag everywhere he goes till a bird
snatches it thus creating the withdraw of his
character which starts off slow but ends more
outrageous then you'd expect from the guy since he's
been playing in a lot of PG-13 films that don't push
his comedic limit.

Robert Downey Jr is at his funniest. He plays an actor
so method that he dyes his skin black to play a black
man. Downey Jr stays in character for almost the whole
film and is the second best and funniest actor in this
movie.

Ben Stiller was very good, not great but it's not a
surprise considering just how funny everyone else was.

Jay Baruchel proves that he has the chops to be in the
big leagues with these guys and has the best line
delivery of the film.

Brandon T. Jackson was also good and reminded me a bit
of Chris Tucker but not as funny.

Matthew McConaughey was great and when he came on
screen all the women in the audience got excited. He
has not been this funny since Dazed and Confused,
though I couldn't help but to think of Owen Wilson who
was originally suppose to play the part, and think
about how funny he would have been in it. The role did
seem like it was written for Wilson but McConaughey
worked great.

Now for the best actor in the film. The man who steals
the film. Tom Cruise! Yes Tom Cruise was brilliant in
this, I won't go into detail because it will be an
awesome surprise but Tom Cruise played a role I never
in a million years thought he would ever play, and I
truly think after this film comes out he will redeem
himself to the public and from all the bad press he
has gotten lately, because I don't see how you could
not like the guy after seeing him really go for it in
this film.

All in all it was a good movie and a funny one. It is
always walking on a thin red line between comedy that
is more realistic and comedy that is huge and over the
top. I would give it a 4 out of 5. It isn't quite as
good as SuperBad or the Forty Year Old Virgin to me
but a lot better then Wedding Crashers or Knocked Up.
I do believe it is the best Ben Stiller/Jack Black
comedy in some time and highly recommend it this
August to anyone who likes to laugh (as cliche as that
sounds it's true.)

-BrightEyes

P.S. TEAM JACK!

I think they knew to do it in good taste.

Plus with Brandon T. Jackson as Alpa Chino, I think he'll be playing off Downey Jr. pretty well. Keeping the whole "blackface" thing from getting out of hand.

Like the scene where Downey Jr says "What do you mean, you people?"

Then Brandon says to Downey Jr, "What do you mean, by you people?".
