I said yes. The Mandarin's character is largely linked to him being Chinese. Changing the character to Middle Eastern betrays the essence of the character.

Chow Yun Fat's Sao Feng was basically the Mandarin . . . or Fu Manchu, take your pick.

If Fat can play a character like Sao Feng today, why can't we see a version of the Mandarin without being afraid of it being too "insensitive"?

^Exactly! He's the best choice I can think of for the role.

Marvel, I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking about the character or the actor to play him?

The character ought to be. But the actor doesn't matter so much as long as he can convincingly pass as Chinese. I don't think Ken Watanabe looks Chinese, really. The man just screams "I'm Japanese" to me. But most Asian actors could pull it off, looks-wise.

The actor has to pass as chinese for me.

My thoughts exactly.

For Watanabe, I don't think most people can tell the difference if he is Japanese or Chinese. But I agree he looks more Japanese. This reminds about the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha". There were Asian critics that criticize the movie for having Chinese actresses portraying the geishas.

is the mandarin still in the movie?

He was announced as a villain, but from the footage and pics it seems that Iron monger is.

I want the Mandarin to be Chinese (if he is not then his name makes no sense anymore).
He has always been Chinese, and if he is not then it betrays the comic book character.
As for who should play him, i would want someone more menacing than Chow-Yun-Fatt

Whoever excellent actor they cast, he should be Chinese.

Mandarin should be Chinese in origin, but I have no problem with a non-chinese actor playing the character, as long as he is of asian desent.

I got a good choice,I don't know if he is Chinese or Japanese, but the guy that played Shang Tsung from the first Mortal Kombat movie would have my vote if he was Mandarin.

That guy's always been my #1 choice to play Mandain.

Either Chow Yun Fatt (Pirates 3) or Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat 1) would be perfect for the role.

I must put my vote for Chow Yun Fat as Mandarin too if the more well informed Iron Man fans in here endorse him.

He should be whatever race he was originally intended to be. But if he isn't, will it matter?

I'm thinking any actor of Asian extraction would be sufficient as the Mandarin just so long as the character himself is of Chinese origin.

he should be chinese just because it would be correct

Aloha,
There have been 4 Charlie Chans in the movies. All four have been white ators made up to look Asian. Mandarin should be Asian, if not Chinese.

i think they should stay true to the character . they don't need to change the origin , but they could tweak it a little bit .
