Columbia Pictures has signed Clive Owen to topline The International, an action-thriller about an Interpol agent who investigates corruption at powerful banking institutions.
Variety says the film (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=19918#) will be directed by Tom Tykwer, with shooting scheduled to begin in September.
Eric Singer wrote the script and Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are producing, along with Lloyd Phillips. John Woo, Terence Chang and Jeff Lurie are executive producing.
Owen, who previously starred in Closer for the studio, also stars (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=19918#) in New Line's upcoming Shoot 'Em Up and The Golden Age for Universal. He's also been cast to reprise his role in the Sin City sequel.
Never heard of the director but With Owen involved and the concept i'm interested:up:

Naomi Watts has signed on to star opposite Clive Owen in The International, the action-thriller that Tom Tykwer is directing for Columbia Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The plot centers on an obsessive Interpol agent (Owen) who spearheads an investigation into one of the world's most high-profile and powerful banking institutions in an attempt to expose them for worldwide arms brokering, corruption and murder. Watts will play a Manhattan assistant district attorney who partners with the agent to take down the bank.
Eric Singer (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=22002#) wrote the screenplay. Filming will take place in Berlin.
Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Richard Suckle as well as Lloyd Phillips are producing.

After making an appearance to support the film at the Toronto Film Festival (http://www.torontointernationalfilmfestival.ca/) in September, Owen will get right into shooting The International (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=22023), the next film from German mastermind Thomas Tykwer, which he told us a little about as well. "It's like a big international, political thriller with a guy trying to expose and bring down a big bank, and every time he gets close, people are backing off, and strange things are happening with people being murdered, and he's obsessively trying to bring them down. It's like a throwback '70s very political thriller with some amazing bursts of action in there as well."

The International Spotted in Milan!
Source: Andrea, Monte
November 30, 2007
BadTaste.it (http://www.badtaste.it/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2104&Itemid=29) tells us they took photos (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=39824#) of filming for The International (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=22023) that took place in Milan, Italy:
I have some exclusive images from the Italian set of The International, Tom Twyker's movie with Clive Owen and Naomi Watts!
They are filming some key scenes in Milan, and two our readers took some images from the set. You can view them here (http://www.badtaste.it/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2104&Itemid=29).
Our reader wrote us some spoilers from the scenes too... They said that Italian actor Luca Barbareschi will portray a financier who turns to politics, and in those scenes he's on the stage during an electoral talk in; suddenly a killer from the roof of Grand Hotel Gallia shoots him. Barbareschi gets killed, and policemen rush to the hotel, while people run terrified. Naomi Watts and Clive Owen are having a drink in a pub the production built near the electoral stage (you can see on the right of the wide photo). Owen discovers the true killer and throws himself into a car-chase through Milano's streets. But due to traffic the killer must stop the car, so Owen tries to approach his car, but when he gets closer he finds that the killer has escaped without being seen...
Be sure to check out the photos at the link above! The Sony (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=39824#) action-thriller, opening August 15, centers on an obsessive Interpol agent (Owen) who spearheads an investigation into one of the world's most high-profile and powerful banking institutions in an attempt to expose them for worldwide arms brokering, corruption and murder. Watts will play a Manhattan assistant district attorney who partners with the agent to take down the bank.

Looks like it's cashing in on the whole Bourne/Bond genre which has become very popular at the moment, however it does have a better director and star, but whether it makes the grade is dubious.
The fact is has Clive Owen means it will sell anyway, especially with the genre. I don't expect the film to be great, but most likely better than Bourne.

Jesus that reminded me of the Quantum of Solace trailer at the end. The rooftops look like Sienna, and there's a shootout in a sort of high foyer-esque thing.
I don't really feel anything for this genre of films. The man v.s. organisation, corporate spy-esque things.
But then again, Clive Owen is so ridiculiously cool, you feel feminine just watching him.

Is Owen capable of choosing a mainstream starring vehicle that doesn't seem boring? Shoot 'Em Up? Derailed? King Arthur?
Only his supporting work in movies like Sin City, Inside Man, Closer and Bourne Identity yield fruit.
...Except for Children of Men which was awesome... And a huge financial failure...

Shoot 'Em Up was a gift from the gods!
Who gives a shizz if Children of Men flopped? It's practically universally loved, it's already considered a massive influence on films today and it's only three years old.

Saw it today. Enjoyable suspense movie with a plot that wasn't boring. Did remind of Bourne a little. I think the music helped the thrill and I even danced a little in my seat. Didn't notice any crummy acting; Clive Owen is pretty regardless of blood on himself. There was a constant vibe someone would die maybe in the next five minutes. I wonder if the beginning of the credits could allow a possible sequel...Not mind blowing but I had some fun watching it.

My review:
Nobody in North America is particularly enamoured with the banks at the moment, so what better time to release a high-concept political-minded thriller featuring a dogged quest to end the sinister machinations of a terrorist-funding financial institution? Especially one which features the roguish, dark charms of brooding Brit Clive Owen, and the concentrated, sprite-ly pluck of Naomi Watts, packing heat, taking names and pounding the pavement? Why, if I were a studio executive I’d say The International was guaranteed to be money in the... Umm, well, you get the drift.
Playing Louis Salinger, a strong-willed, bedraggled Interpol agent, Owen is at his Children of Men-intense finest, battling tirelessly to expose and topple the Luxembourg-based International Bank of Business and Credit. It seems the IBBC counts, among a plethora of assorted illegal interests, selling armaments to Third-world countries in order to create astronomical debt as a viable and lucrative business opportunity. However, after the bank stealthily murders Salinger’s American colleague in Berlin, he finds himself perilously close to being in over his head.
In teaming with dedicated Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (an underused and underwritten Watts), Salinger finds a partner as strong-willed and resolute as himself. As the two investigators begin the pain-staking process of tracking and uncovering the morally shady participants (led by the intensely slimy Ulrich Thomsen) behind IBBC’s bold, deadly power-play, they quickly find the degree of threat towards their personal safety escalating. Nevertheless, in slowly discovering the implications of the conspiracy’s true intentions, which also involves political assassination, Salinger and Whitman must choose whether to stay on the straight-and-narrow or to attempt to beat the bank at its own dishonest game.
While The International aims for lofty levels of political relevance and insight, it’s actually far more superior, and accessible, as a down-and-dirty espionage vehicle. Director Tom Tykwer, who earned our undivided attention with 1998’s pulsating attention-grabber Run Lola Run, has crafted a sharply engaging paranoia-drenched slice of labyrinthine fun. With tension-dripping dramatic scenes, such as the aforementioned assassination attempt, as well as an extended section of the film, which owes a great dept to The French Connection, following Owen and two NYPD colleagues as they trail an IBBC-funded hired gun, Tykwer holds our attention (and breath) with the skill of a sharpened professional. He also shoots the architecture of the film’s steel-edged buildings and European cobble-stones with a travelogue-maker’s passion and flair.
Adding considerably to the suspense and intrigue is the grounding presence of the hard-edged Owen, really engaged and on his game here, as well as an ace supporting cast of great-looking faces and personalities. Armin Mueller-Stahl, who last shone as a Russian mob godfather in David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises, provides a weary, cynical charisma to the film, playing an emotionally-conflicted IBBC conspirator. Also grittily efficient are the realistic performances of Jack McGee and Felix Solis, as the NYPD cops who aid in the show-stopping hitman-trailing set-piece, who look and feel like genuine tough-talking Big Apple flatfoots, as well as the peculiarly threatening Brian F. O’Byrne as their clean-cut, yet shadowy prey.
Where The International invariably fumbles unfortunately, is in the resolution of its globe-spanning story. Following a nail-biting scene of undercover surveillance at the Guggenheim, the film inexplicably turns a bizarro corner into James Bond-ian territory, with half-a-dozen uzi-packing assailants turning the gorgeous interiors into a landscape of bullet-holes and shattered glass. The scene, while gripping, and expertly directed and edited, feels at complete odds with the events leading up to it. One almost has to wonder if it was simply added on to jostle viewers with short attention spans. Likewise, a final confrontation in Istanbul with IBBC head-baddie Thomsen feels underwhelming and needlessly complicated, providing no real sense of satisfaction or conclusion.
To be sure though, the sheer abundance of slick film-making proficiency helps overcome these slightly disconcerting problems, as well as the obvious preposterousness of the plot. Ultimately it’s a decent film aimed at those who enjoy a good political-based yarn full of straight-faced performances, edgy intrigue and clipped, complex dialogue full of detailed jargon and strong declarations. So, if you, like me, are growing tired of the profusion of juvenile junk currently crowding into theatres, you could do immeasurably worse than investing your time and money into The International.

I saw this today and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm confused by the critical response to this movie, reviews these days constantly lament the fact story is replaced by action and endings of modern thrillers are all to simplistically tied up with a neat bow, yet this goes the other way and it's deemed "boring".
The story was engrossing, the cold machinations of the bank and the desperate bid of Owen's Interpol agent to bring them down had me completely gripped. It's true that Owen is not the most diverse of actors but he does this kind of role really well, Naomi Watts on the other hand is a fantastic actress who has a pretty average role here.
Twyker's direction is tight and his control over the main scenes that feature pivotal actions within the movie are superb, his pacing of key dramatic set pieces spot on, in particular the assassination and the scene near the end between Owen and the brilliant Armin Mueller-Stahl.
The big action sequence at the Guggenheim that has gotten most of the plaudits truly is a cracker, a breathtaking shoot out that sits as one of the best ever put to film in my view, and I felt that it worked well as a breaking point for both sides of the narrative.
The film features a couple of convenient moments to get to where it wants to go and Naomi Watts at times seems to be just saying her lines, but overall I'd love to see more thrillers like this, with focus on story and dramatic set pieces with less but brilliant action set pieces.
