I like Kidd a lot. He deserves a title, and with the Nets, it won't work. He is older, but damn, he can score points, and can get a s***load of assists a game.
I believe in Joe Dumars, he will do some drastic things.
Flip reminds me of the same coach he was in Minnesota: Never able to take the next step. We need a coach with intensity and fire in him. Which is why I think we should shell out the dough to get Larry back.
But do you think Detroit can get behind Larry again? Didn't they feel betrayed by him?

I don't think Larry Brown will be back. I believe he is not interested in coaching anymore and is satisfied with a NCAA championship and an NBA championship.

Larry is a tad "controversial," but he got us to two straight Finals appearances, and within five minutes of a REPEAT.
I'd take that over two straight East Finals losses.

If I didn't care about NCAA basketball, I'd want Tom Izzo. :csad:

They were talking about which team he wanted to play, and he said stuff like,
"They both play 5 guys."
"They both make shots."
"Well, yeah, they both dribble the ball."

The best Pop quote was after the Spurs clinched over the Jazz. Some reporter asked him if he'd rather play Detroit or Cleveland, and he scoffed, looked around the room in disbelief for a few seconds, then leaned into the mic and said "Is this your first time talking to a coach?"
Yeah, I laughed my ass off at that.
I must like him because he reminds me of Larry :csad:

FINALLY!!! One of my pro-teams is in the championship!!!
That said, I think the Cavs have a shot. This will be a 6-7 game series either way. The Cavs will put up one hell of a fight, and I think they can win this. It won't be easy, but the Spurs shouldn't expect to run over us. That won't happen.

The Cavs have too much desire to lose in 4 or 5. Plus, Mike Brown will know how to give them some fits.
If the Spurs win, it won't be an easy 4 or 5 game series. This is 6 or 7 either way.
Remember, no one gave the Heat a shot last year, nor the Cavs a chance against the Pistons this year. The Cavs can win this.

Anytime you have the best player on the court, that team always stands a chance at winning. The problem is, San Antonio has the next three best players (and possibly more beyond that). Cleveland's much derided supporting cast has got to show up.
Btw, Daniel Gibson having a big game tonight was a horrible thing. Not because he helped Cleveland win, but rather now I have to put up with Zeus knows how many 'Boobie' Gibson references. WTF? On the bright side, at least they won't come from the repugnant voice of Reggie Miller.

The Spurs are a great team. I am not saying they aren't. I am just saying those expecting a short series should think again. I don't see it. Sure, the Spurs have been here and know how to get it done, but the Cavs seem hungrier, and that makes them dangerous.
If the cavs were to win the series against the spurs they would have to do it at Clevland. Which means they would have to finish the spurs in a sweep or in 5 which I fine very unlikely!!!
Spider-Fan
06-03-2007, 01:17 AM
Cavs won't sweep the Spurs. I am a Cavs fan, and even I know they can't. They may be able to win 3 in Cleveland, but they have to win 1-2 games in SA. They already broke their curse in SA, so with that out of the way, Mike Brown just needs to plan a good attack strategy (which being formerly employed by the Spurs, he should be able to do).
This is an uphill battle, but the Cavs can do it!

bingo bango, Spurs do quite well against one hit wonders, I wouldn't be surprised if they slide Bowen on Gibson. In 05 they let Amare run wild and avg insane stats, but still took it in 5 because they let the star player get his and shut down everyone else. And the Cavs supporting cast is vastly inferior to Lebron. I doubt they can sit him for too long.

Not if Robert Horry has anything to say.
Cheap shot Horry doesn't scare me (until there is 5 seconds left on the clock).
Let's face it. What player have the Cavs had to adjust their defense for this playoffs? They played a Gilbert-less Wizards. They played a Nets team that featured a soft Vince Carter. How many times did he settle for fadeaway jumpshots instead of taking it to the rim? Kidd and Jeffeson are nice, but are easy to guard in the half-court. The Cavs matched up extremely well against Detroit. Billups relies on his strength to get to the rim, but Snow and James are just as strong. Larry Hughes is quick and long enough to bother Hamilton's jumpshot. The rest of the team wasn't good enough to outscore James.
For the first time this series the Cavs will have to make adjustments on defense. How will they keep Tony Parker out of the lane? Are they gonna sag off him and let him bury the jumper, as he shoots with confidence. Are they gonna double off of Finley or Bowen and give up a 3? How will they adjust to having Manu coming off bench and maintain the Spurs attack? And then there is Duncan. Who will they decide to have in foul trouble first? They can't help off of Oberto or he will cut to the rim and beat them for a layup. It will be interesting to see what poison the Cav's decide to pick.

San Antonio will dominate the Cavs, it won't even be a series more than likely. I'd really be surpised if the Cavs can make this series competitive.
I'm also disgusted at the officials and how Detroit was treated during this series - Stern wants the most marketable player in the finals, that's all, I get it, it's a business.
Cute little Cleveland finally gets there, good for them. Maybe they can win some type of Championship, God knows they haven't won anything since 1964.....

I wouldn't mind Cleveland winning, because I'm sick of San Antonio, that's for sure. It was just a matter of time that Detroit got knocked off their pedestal, so it's par for the course, they dominated for a while.
The Pistons will be blown up this off season - look for Flip to be fired and Rasheed and Billups to be released.

Right, you try to capitalize on the good breaks you get, and you have to fight through the bad breaks you get, its the same with almost every sport. Bad officiating doesn't take a 2-0 series lead from the Pistons. Even if the officiating was horrible throughout every game, the Pistons as a team should have been able to play through it.

To be real, if the refs called the game down the line and not give certain players "superstar calls" none of it would happen. The players would adapt to learn not to foul out or they would adapt not to foul. You can see certain players get slammed to the ground and not get a foul called. But if you blow on another player, it's a foul. Superstar or not, a foul is a foul.

Still, bad calls will happen because the refs are only human. They will always miss something. Look, theres no changing it, its always been like this. Its just that when upsets like this happen, people like to blow it up and exaggerate it, but it really comes down to this: The Pistons had a 2-0 series lead, the Pistons play when they want to, they think they can switch it on and off. They did it against the Bulls and got away with it, but not with the Cavs.

The Magic thing happened so quickly and he needed to make such a quick decision (which is completely unlike him) all it took was a bit of @itching from fans and friends in Florida to make him change his mind (in a spectacularly whiney fashion).
No doubt the Pistons will be blown up - they had their day, and now it's over. One NBA title, 2 Finals appearances, and 5 ECF appearances in a row. Detroit fans are whining because we've been spoiled.
It's time for cute little Cleveland to have their time in the limelight, God knows a Championship team hasn't come out of that town in over 40 years, so good for them.
Yeah, but I'm not worried. I have complete faith in Joe Dumars.

It seems that no matter what team loses, some of their fans are inclined to believe the big bad refs were the cause. It's hysterical. Would you be saying this if Detroit won? No. It is only because it is LeBron.
I mean, it is not like the refs blew a call giving the Pistons a 2-0 series lead. It's not like the Pistons were on the verge of blowing a 3-0 series lead to the lesser Bulls (if they lost game 6, they would have lost the series). It's not like the Cavs took this team to 7 games last year, and almost beat them in 6. It's not like any other superstars get the same calls LeBron does.
Stern had nothing to do with this. I think people need to get off the Stern nudging/fixing Kool-Aid.

Like I said, these are the same comments I made about the officiating last year. I still believe that the officiating last year for Dallas was horrible and nothing is going to change my mind. I, however, find it amusing to see the hypocrisy of some of the posters here in this NBA thread.
They were calling me a moron, a crybaby, a sore loser, and making other personal attacks against me for saying these things. I admit I said some stupid things and attacked wrongly, but it's funny to see them whining about the officiating now.
Either way, Detroit played lazy basketball and went in believing they would intimidate the Cavs. They had this belief they can turn it on and turn it off when they want to which resulted in it biting them in the ass.
Good for Cleveland. I'm happy they made it and now it makes the Finals more interesting.

Dallas I think got lazy, also. Miami just didn't miss a shot in those last games.
Its because, they cannot accept their beloved Pistons got beat by a team they deemed too weak to be a threat. They can get on people who complain about refs, but when their team loses, that is the first excuse. It is rather funny. I think you now have the right to grill them for a year.
They are in the denial stage of grieving, but need to face reality.

A Cavaliers fan. In an NBA thread, that is all that really matters.
Are you really trying to put the NBA finals in the same league as 9/11 and the JFK assassination? Man, get over it.
The refs don't win games for you. The Pistons had a 2-0 series lead, and the refs in game 2 screwed up on a call that allowed the Cavs to lose, and be close to elimination. The refs don't win a series, players do. The shots still have to go in. Cleveland's did, Detroit's didn't. You act like Detroit didn't benefit from poor calls, when they did. Human error is part of the game, and that goes for both sides.
Also, team's do get hot, or did you forget how the Cardinals won the World Series last year?

I've gotta agree to compare what Stern might, and I stress might, impart to refs as his wishes is anywhere akin to the JFK assassination or 911 is just about the crappiest, stupidest and insulting thing I've ever read on these boards and that's saying a lot.
Let's just say Stern is the Hoover of the NBA trying to impose his will and make certian teams win. Can that even work? Sure you can give advantages but consider that people get hot or cold. Add injuries into the equation and the refs influence is vastly reduced. Then factor in there are plenty of fans like Darth here that are going to scream and cry their little heads off at any seeming slight and it's pretty damn hard to fix an NBA game.
The Mavs lost last year because Miami played better and deserved to win. Any dignity for that team was lost long ago by the incesant @itching of their fans and owner. A Win is a Win and a Lose is an Lose. Even if you do get robbed you shut up and work harder for next year. Any of my high school football coaches would slap your whiney ears back for @itching still a year later.

It's still debated as to whether or not Miami were the better team. Sure, a lot of calls went in their favor, that much has been confirmed and proven in a study. As a Dallas fan I was angry and still feel that the officiating in the series was too one sided.
But I'm also realistic too. You don't have a 2-0 lead and just squander it like that either. You either play smarter or you're bound to lose a crucial game in the long run which is what happened. Dirk, Howard, Terry, and other players didn't play like they wanted to win the championship and it showed.
The same thing happened this year with the Warriors. They got shaken with intimidation, and rather than stand their ground and fight back, they buckled down with their tail between their legs and got humiliated again. As I said, I'm a Dallas fan, but I'm also realistic as well.

Debate all you want, I saw pics with a rather large trophy. Excuses and reasons are just that. No crying, no do overs, this is professional sports.
Pat Riley outcoached a team that got complacent, cocky and too much into their own press. They deserved to lose. Miami came together as a team, they didn't let the initial losses blind them, they just got angry, focused and better.
Calls don't always go your way, but sometimes they do. I remember your team playing the Spurs last year, what do you think about the officiating in that series?
I'm a Miami fan myself. Last year was fantastic, this year we got lazy, failed to adapt and were properly humbled by a better chicago team. No whining or excuses. We got beat, there will be next year.

Yes, in the end the outcome is the same. Dallas lost a series they definitely had won in my view. However, it doesn't change the fact for me that I believe the majority of the calls went in Miami's favor. It's true that bad calls happen and believe me, I'm not making excuses, what happened is a done deal and there is nothing to be done about it.
It goes down in the record book as a championship for Miami and a loss for Dallas.
Dallas/San Antonio series had some questionable calls. I felt Bowen got unfairly called for some fouls, but it was obvious that Dirk was fouled when he drove to the hoop and was hacked on the arm by Ginoboli.

The Spurs are not going to have a problem with Lebron. I can see them double teaming the heck out of him and forcing other guys to make shots, which will ultimately lead to their inevitable victory.
The Spurs know that guys like Gooden, Gibson, Illguaskas, and Damon Jones will not have monster games that will help the Cavs. When push comes to shove the Cavs need to bring their A game to the front. More than likely they'll have Bowen and Ginoboli defend Lebron, while forcing him to pass the ball to his teammates.
It's not rocket science obviously, but everyone knows Lebron doesn't have consistent help on the team.

That's the standard tact, but this is also Lebron's first Finals game and his maturity has grown incredibably quickly, also the cavs are clearly hungry, they might get hot and force the Spurs to change tactics.

Consistantly, the rest of the guys are not much support, but all of those guys have stepped up and have had a huge game in the playoffs, so they only really need one of them to get hot on a given night (doesn't have to be the same guy either) and open things up for LeBron.

Also, team's do get hot, or did you forget how the Cardinals won the World Series last year?
BBALL is alot diff than Baseball.. and calls in BBALL can be compared to blown calls in Football or blown plays in baseball.. one bad call can change the momentum of a ENTIRE game... ONE game can change an ENTIRE SERIES.. if you cant see that than theres no use even continuing

Well I am not going to argue that it APPEARS in some instances that somebody, be it Stern or whomever, is maybe pulling some strings, helping out a certain team. But for every instance of that for one team, the next game it looks just like that for the other team. Its just inconsistent is the point really. The debunker in this is that Stern himself has the power not to suspend Amare for that game, but didn't. He could have easily explained why he chose not to, and it would have passed as the right decision. Sure I think he would like the best players, most entertaining Finals that there could be, thats what everyone wants who is a fan and had their teams eliminated or just is a basketball fan in general. I just don't think he is going to go to those methods to make it happen based on his actions.
The inconsistency of the officiating should just dissolve this entirely by itself, but some people choose to see it a certain way and run with it, making up their own theories with Stern and his league fixing the games. Others choose to look at it with an unbiased perspective and understand it. And still others are just pissed that their team lost and have to vent on something, and the refs are usually just the right people for that blame to be put on.

To be quite honest, I never go into the community boards, nor did I know this thread existed. Also, what does me coming here now have to do with my knowledge of sports? Because I don't frequent here much doesn't mean I don't know anything.
One game can change a series, but you act like the refs didn't give the Pistons anything, when they gave them game 2. Did I come hear whining about that then? No, I said "oh well...better luck next time", while the Pistons fans can't accept that even in the games they won, they got outplayed. Also, they showed laziness when they had a large lead in their series versus the Bulls, like they did here.
Bad calls happen in every game. Quite a few times in every game. It's life. However, while the Cavs handled these calls by concentrating on winning, the Pistons whined like little girls and lost focus.
Again, I will admit, LeBron in the finals is better for business, but if it is all about business for Stern, why did he let the Spurs take the series against the Suns? He didn't have to suspend the Suns 2 starters for the game, but he did and the Spurs won. The Suns would have been better for ratings.
Plus, the Cavs have been hot since the last 2 weeks of the season. If you think that had nothing to do with them winning the series, there is no point in continuing here.
Jerry!

I wouldn't say the Pistons as a team whined, just Wallace really.
Like I explained in my last post, there are inconsistencies to the theory that Stern wants this team or that team or whoever in the Finals.

In game 1, Bruce Bowen will stab Lebron twice in the kidney and when the officials run over, he raise his hands in the air like nothing happened even though the replays clearly show it. The game will go on Spurs win in 4, problem solved.:woot:

I grew up outside Cleveland, so I love all the Cleveland teams (Indians, Cavs, and especially the Browns). Hell, I still where my Kemp jersey from when he was on our team. I hear it from Yanks and Mets fans, in fact. I finally has some rights over them now (with the Cavs, and the Yanks slow season with the Yanks fans). I only now have started going into the community forums...once the playoffs are over (or when I am done gloating depending on what happens), I will focus my attention to the MLB thread.
Back to the subject at hand. Well, Kobe did elbow two guys in the face (the second time he deserved the suspension...not the first). As for bias, bias has existed for eons in the NBA. Jordan used to benefit from it all the time, but Detroit back then still always beat the Bulls (until the Bulls finally did it). It isn't the teams getting the benefits, just the individual. One superstar can't win you a series. That is why I can't buy this. Gooden, Varajao, etc. were not getting slanted calls. LeBron will, like Jordan, but thats it. He is one guy. One guy getting a few calls his way will not win a game. The other Cavs just stepped up when they had to (as they have since the last 2 weeks of the season).
Every year some one becomes nuts about the refs screaming "the sky is falling!"

Finally found an Indian fan on here. I have a question that has baffled me for the last year about Indian fans. Why in the world do you guys boo Jim Thome? I remember the first time he came back to Cleveland, it was horrible. People had signs saying "Support the Boo Thome Campaign" and other crap. I don't think I will ever understand that. That guy is probably the single nicest guy playing the game, he knits sweaters for his teammates, but why do you guys hate him? He wasn't re-signed because you guys wanted to go younger, and in the end you guys have ended up with a great ball club. He is going into the Hall with an Indian's hat. Frank Thomas in his later years was a complete crybaby and ******* and even made parting shots at the White Sox when he wasn't re-signed, yet when he returned with the A's last year, he got not one, but two standing ovations. Once for his first at bat, and the second about a minute later when he hit a home run against us. And he deserved it. Why do you guys boo someone like Jim Thome?

The reason you will hear is because he said he was leaving because he wanted to be on a contender when we sucked, but when he was a Philly, he wasn't on a contender, so the fans felt betrayed and insulted by it. And Cleveland fans are not a forgiving bunch, especially when we hear from our hero the same thing we do from Steelers fans on a daily basis (and Pistons fans now, too).
I never shared that hatred toward Thome (I'd cheer every HR he gets if he wasn't a White Sock), but that is the reason.
Jerry!
06-06-2007, 08:40 PM
But thats after the fact that Shapiro never had the intention of re-signing him in the first place. He doesn't deserve any kind of bitter feelings or hatred at all. Its just sad, I really like the team the Indians have, but the fans I just can't stand for that reason alone. If they can't understand that Thome was never going to be back because they were never going to re-sign him, then thats just ignorant. I guarantee you that if the White Sox were to let Thome go at the end of the season, and say Detroit or Minnesota or whomever were to pick him up, he would still get a standing ovation at Chicago for just 2 years of service, compared to the Hall of Fame time he played at Cleveland and he gets booed out of the stadium. Its not right.

Yeah, I heard about that. Thats a bunch of bull****, I have never seen that happen ever. What always happens is the team inquiring about the coach simply asks permission and its granted. In this case, he wasn't even head coach, but a "consultant" because Riley decided he wanted to coach again and had him lie to the press about wanting to see his family. Yeah I guess one year with your family is long enough right? Smells like bull**** to me. I'd be pissed if I were a Magic fan.

Because his wife didn't like Sac.
If this is true then Stan Van Gundy really isn't Ron Jeremy.

Van Gundy was under contract for another year and Miami didn't have to release him at all. Why should they let a division rival benefit without compensation? Nobody forced Orlando to do anything here. I don't see the problem.
This isn't unprecedented either. Miami had to give the Knicks a first rounder and one million dollars to get Riley. I'm certain it's happened other times in the league, but that one comes to mind.
Then how did Kobe get 3 rings?

you mean is any one gonna WATCH!???
ppl will watch to see lebron do something BUT if the spurs blow them out or stop lebron... everyone is goin NHL on this finals... trust
edit: this is coming from LA perspective... we(the majority of LA fans) are in the Cavs corner... we cant stand the Spurs(sept for NOFX)... so if the tide turns in the Sturns favor... we will tune out.. and so will most of america.. NY has NO vested interest at all so dont expect help from them

I might agree except it's the finals. Look I hate baseball (so boring to me I cannot describe it) but I watch the world series ever year. One because you never know and two cause it's the freaking finals. A lot of people tuned out after the first two games last year and ended up missing a history making performance and Cuban's head litterally spinning around and spewing vomit like that kid in the exorchist (misspelled I know, I'm too lazy to do anything about it).

I understand I was a huge laker fan back before I lived in this country especially Magic (who I think Lebron resembles a lot more closely than Jordan) but since I moved to Florida I had to pull for the heat. It's been a long and humiliating run until recently.
LA might tune out, but I don't think too many basketball fans can resist the finals (admit it you had to flip back every so often for at least a peek).

Yeah I can't think of anyone I would rather have on a team than Magic because he lead as well as played great ball. Everyone talks about Lebron being the new Mike which I get because of the stardom but in terms of playing, his size, speed, the way he passes the ball and sees the open man I can't see anyone not saying that comparison is the most valid.

Lakers only go to Cleveland once a year and the Garden once a year, so it is tougher for me to catch the man (especially now that Cavs tickets are getting expensive). I'd like to, though.

Same here, especially since trump got involved (the assbag).
They're working on trading for Jermaine O'Neal and possibly Marcus Camby.
That Camby deal is dead. Lakers are trying to get O'neal but there trying to do it without Odom. And Odom said he be very unhappy if he was traded to the pacers. Another rumor I read was that the Lakers are now trying to get Okafor.

I have my doubts on Okafor. But I don't think that the general public will necessarily tune out if the Spurs go up 2-0. Detroit was up 2-0 and the Cavs went on to sweep the rest of the games . Furthermore, in Detroit's entire post season history they have never lost a series when up 2 games until now. So anything is possible. And the NHL is still around?
